Converting MPEG2 video to AVI

I am using PE4 and I am trying to edit video from a DVD. Usually, I have edited video from my camcorder; this is my first time using video from a different source. My question is; should I convert this video into AVI for better quality/easier to edit? If so, can PE4 do this or do I have to download/buy a MPEG-AVI converter program? Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, as they say, your mileage may vary. Particularly with non-DV-AVI files.
But, with DV-AVIs, you can practically guarantee success.
So it's up to you which option you choose.

does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

.mods are (somekind of) mpegs ...
At first I though he was talking about the ancient audio .mod files:
"The first version of the format was created by Karsten Obarski for use in the Soundtracker tracker released for the Amiga computer in 1987".

Oh, nostalgia ain't what it used to be!

  • I have a video in .avi format, what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

I have a video in .avi format, but what format do I need to convert to, to play on my DVD recorder, please can anyone help?

tylerfrombalantine's post had zero grammar in it, so it's not clear what he's saying. I bought a DVD recorder and the instruction manual lists all the disc formats it can play. Check your DVD recorder manual to see what works with it, then burn a DVD that matches. It should be fine to burn just a standard DVD, since of course any DVD player can play that.
Depending on the program you use, you may not have to convert anything manually. The program might convert your current video format to DVD on fly as it burns the disc.

  • Convert a M4V video into AVI (for free)

Hi. I'd like to convert a M4V video into AVI (for free). Do you have any suggestions ? Thanks

DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING! Here's what you do. Open the AVI file with QuickTime Player. Then go to SAVE AS. Then, name your file and be sure to save it as MOVIE. I did iPhone since I don't think it matters. It will automatically save as an M4V file! Yay!

  • HT2729 What video formats (avi, MPEG, MOV, etc.) are "playable" on MacBook without adding some kind of converter?  Any?  how?

What video formats (avi, mpeg, mov, etc.) are "playable" on MacBook without any video converter?  Are there any?  How come quick time wont let me play a MPEG?  When you google this question, al the answers make me download some converter (VLC, etc.)

What video formats (avi, mpeg, mov, etc.) are "playable" on MacBook without any video converter?  Are there any?
Depends on what compressed data is in the AVI, MPEG, or MOV file container. E.g., assuming you are using the QT X v10.2 player listed in your hardware profile, a "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 MPEG file will probably play correctly but an MPEG-2/MP2 or MPEG-2/PCM MPEG file may be problematic. In a similar manner, a Motion-JPEG/WAV AVI file probably won't play the video but play the audio while a DV audio/video AVI file will probably still play correctly.
How come quick time wont let me play a MPEG?
Agian, it depends on what you mean by an MPEG file here. A "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 file in an MPEG, MPG, TS, or MOV file container should play correctly while the same data in a VOB file container will neither load nor play. Further, this file is not only playback compatible with the QT X v10.2 player but is now conversion compatible to H.264/AAC MOV files on my system which was a surprise to me. On the other hand, if the MPEG file contains MPEG-2 video muxed with MP2 audio (a common PC compression combination), the file will likely have audio/video sync problems and/or freeze up entirely. However, this latter file plays back correctly and without problem in QT 7 with the Apple QT MPEG-2 playback component installed. (For the moment I assume the new support capabilities, as well as, the latest audio problems here may be associated with the system audio upgrades begun in Lion and completed in Moutain Lion.)
When you google this question, al the answers make me download some converter (VLC, etc.)
QT is in the process of being totally re-written. Unfortunately, the addition of new capabilities comes at the expense of making the "new" QT structure less and less compatible with legacy compression formats and file containers and likely signals the eventual end of QT 7 and its "Pro" capabilities in favor of higher definition, more efficient compression technologies.

  • Urgent.  Issue with converted .mov files to avi not working in Premiere.

I am trying to import video files that I have converted from .mov to .avi through OjoSoft Total Video Converter and anytime I try to put a file into the work area, the video goes to Video 1, and Audio goes to Audio 4.  When I try to play it I get no audio, and the video jumps from frame 1 to frame 2.
Does anyone know a good converter or know the best way to convert and what filetypes to do so?  They work converting them as MP4 video files, but I like avi's better.
I have tried converting the .mov to mpeg4 and H.264 (Both with audio as MP3).  They will play in Windows Media Player after convert but not in premiere...
I am running Premiere CS4 on Windows7 with no direct codec packs installed.  I opened a video/audio file that I worked on before with no issues...video/audio run flawlessly in Premiere.
    Please help!

What are the codecs in the original MOV files and what are the codecs after conversion? Use GSpot to identify them.

  • Will MPEG-2 convert a video with sound?

I've converted my videos to MPEG-4 using Quicktime Pro, and they play fine but with no sound.
Is this the application I need to convert them with sound?

No. As Kay tried to explain, the MPEG2 component will simply allow you to extract the video data from a "muxed" stream of audio/video information. To extract and convert both audio and video data, use an MPEG based third party application like MPEG Streamclip (free). This application uses MPEG routines to decocde "muxed files (e.g., MPEG1, MPEG2, VOB, etc.) and then uses your QT Tools package to convert them to an iPod specific (or other QT compatible) format. (NOTE: Windows version of MPEG Streamclip does require the Apple MPEG2 component you asked about.)

how can i sync videos to my iphone 5 using Itunes 11. i also tried to convert the videos to mp4 and drag and drop the file in itunes but still i cant see videos in itunes library.

    Copied from this link.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
There are 3rd party utilities available that "rip" content into a compatible format - most include an iPod and/or iPhone format selection. If a video plays in iTunes, iTunes includes an option to convert a selection for iPod/iPhone.

  • How to publish to video format avi , wmv , mov or mpg ?

How to publish to video format avi , wmv , mov or mpg ?

    Hello there,
You can publish as MP4 from Captivate and then use any video converters to convert from MP4 to whatever format you need. But, as Lilybiri mentioned, there won't be any interactivity in the videos.
    Thanks,
    Vish

  • Converting MPEG2 Muxed back to Dv

I'm working on a video project, and the person doing the filming keeps sending me muxed mpeg2 video. I've had it professionally converted to DV, but was wondering if there is a way to do it in Final Cut Studio, or if there was some freeware that would also do the trick.

    Shawn
you're absolutely right. however, transfering broadcast files using high bitrate MPEG compression as an intermediate codec is quite common. the real issue is whether you intend to recompress to a lossy codec later ...
.. that said, we have received high bitrate MPEG's which were transcoded to DVCPRO50 using MPEG Streamclip, dubbed to DigiBeta and later digitised, compressed and broadcast from our MPEG servers ... i'd challenge anyone to tell which spots have been through that loop.

  • Converting home video using iTunes

I have a new iPod with video 3rd generation. Everything works great with all video I purchase through iTunes (I'm using the latest version for XP). However, when I try to convert a home video file (in the correct format) to play on the iPod, only the audio plays... the video portion is white. For example, I take a video clip (.avi format) and convert to .mpeg4 or .mov or other acceptable video format and import it into iTunes. The video plays back great in iTunes. I then 'convert' so I can install on the iPod, and the video turns white and only the sound comes through. Any thoughts? Thanks.

No offence taken!!! As you sent your response I finally got success! I am not sure what the problem was.... I seemed to have a dll clash, but not sure if that caused any issues. Anyway, re-downloaded and installed and all seems to be fine now. Thanks so much for your help and perseverance! I shall now continue to convert my videos.

  • Converting Home Video

I was just wondering if there is a way to convert home video. I have a bunch of AVI home video files and are wondering if i could convert them to work on my 5g ipod.

I f you check the link it will tell you exactly how to do it.
Videora is just one of 2 pieces of software you do need to transfer AVI to the ipod.
1st you import the avi or other file from a dvd disk into dvd decrypter then you transcode the file with Videora then its ready to go to the pod.
Again here is the link which has a step by step guide, I did a search on google for the dvd decypter and downloaded it from the third on the list.
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html
have fun. its not rocket science.

  • Trying to use MPEG2 video in FC?

Someone shot something for me in what appears to be an MPEG 2 format.  This is what the information that QT has on it says:
    MPEG2 Video, 1440 x 810 pixels, 30 FPS
I have the QuickTime MPEG2 plugin that I purchased from Apple, but that doesn't seem to make any difference here as all I get is a black screen.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Do you mean 1440x1080? Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to QuickTime ProRes LT at 29.97fps.
