Converting MPEGs to play sound on Imovie

Hi
Last night a friend took his camera over to try and improve some of his movies on my Imovie. Every thing went fine until I imported it into Imovie and the sound was lost. It seemed to be the software as the movie clip played fine through Quicktime. When we delved into the help menues it did tell us that the sound had been lost if we were importing an MPEG. THis was true enough when we checked. What confused us was that other clips were playing fine in Imove however these were from my own camera and were AVI files.
We couldn't however find any help on how to solve the problem. I tried saving the MPEG file to and AVI in IMovie but this obviously had no sound either.
Can anyone tell me how i can get these MPEGs to play in IMOVIE with sound??
regards
aw

hi
thanks for the advice.
I see that i am using Imovie HD 6.0.3. I don't know whether that makes any difference?
So I have to download Imovie 8 and if i import the MPEGs into it the sound should come through?
or do i still have to convert the MPEGS into AVI. I don't want to if i can get the MPEGS tpo play sound.

  • How to convert MPEG videos for use on iMovie?

I filmed my drama assignment with my friend on her video camera, she gave me all the files on a USB and when I got home to start editing on iMovie, it says:  iMovie cannot open files in the “MPEG movie” format.

I forgot to mention in a strange way there is not a straight standard format used by cameras as I discover In iMove and Final Cut Express. Mpeg is pretty standard but can be different. For example AVCHD or AVCHD Lite, Motion Jpeg on Panasonic. Each Camera uses similar names but the compression format maybe different and not compatible with iMovie. This why I like Toast, it converts almost anything to a useable format. But if your starting out the Camera Brand and Model is the key to finding compatibility with iMove. Since I have not used iMove in a while and don't know the new version go to the forum with Camera etc. and ask about compatibility. But Toast with some tries will most likely give you what need. This can be frustrating but you'll get there, it may take a little time. Also open the folder with files to see exactly what you've got. You really need to know exactly what you've got. I hope QuickTime work out for you

  • No sound in imovie using mpeg videos. HELP!

Hi, im a newbie, so I have lots of questions with sound in imovie.
I have a digital camrea which does the mpeg movie thing.
so when I import the movie into imovie I see the video but I hear no sound.
I know this was covered in some topics, but I being new to this I really didnt understand.
Im hoping that someone here and point me in the right direction.
    Thank you.

Hi PK - welcome to the forum!
Increasingly, people with digital still cameras want to import their short movie clips created with that camera. BUT the catch is that these movies are NOT in .dv format. They are MPEGs, and if they are MPEG1 or MPEG2 then they must be converted to DV before they will import into iMovie with the audio able to play.
This conversion usually can be done with a free app. called MPEG StreamClip, but may also need another piece of software called the Apple MPEG2 Playback Component (which costs about $20)..
A search in this forum for those, will give you several threads on the issue!
Look here, for example, for more about the method required:
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG
NOTE that iMovie was designed for DV use (a high-quality editing format), not the much lower quality MPEG footage.

  • MPEGs with sound in iMovie

Well I have a digital camera that records movies with sound, but when I try to import them into iMovie they end up with no sound. The help manual says that MPEGs wont work with sound in iMovie. So I was wondering, is there anyway to convert my MPEG movies into somthing iMovie compatible for sound like a .mov or DV. I've tried many products but they all seem to convert the video and leave the sound out just like iMovie does? Please help me.

    Hello!!
Actually, you need Oracle Spatial or Oracle Locator. Oracle Locator is free on Oracle Express, and you could start with it. Otherwise, if you want to know more, Oracle Spatial comes with Oracle Enterprise, and Oracle 10g gives you a schema that allow you to store, manage and query spatial data through Oracle functions, etc.
To start using MapViewer, considering that you already have some spatial data stored on the database, you could download the MapViewer kit at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/spatial/index.html.
You could buy the Pro Oracle Spatial book. It´s very good.
    Good Luck!

  • How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

Get a free app called MPEG Streamclip.
    Available here.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip or clips into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the clips in Apple Intermediate Codec.
Sometimes, MPEG2 clips also require that you install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this. This is available from Apple for $20.

  • Converting MPEG-2 to iMovie???

Just wondering if Roxio Popcorn 2 would do a good job in converting MPEG-2 from my Sony HDD camcorder to iMovie HD? (I don't want to pay 50$ then find out it don't work) Any thoughts??? Thanks.

You will find that you will need to do the following…
    1) Purchase and install the Quicktime MPEG-2 component.
    2) Download a utility call MPEG StreamClip…
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055
… and use it to convert the MPEG-2 files to DVD steams.
    3) Import the created streams into iMovie.

  • Converting .MPEG files in iphoto 09 to be compatible with imovie 09

Is it possible to convert .MPEG files located in iphoto 09, so they can be copied and used in imovie 09? If so, how? Videos are from a Sony Cybershot digital camera. Files from a Canon digital camera convert fine. Thanks.

Yes, personally I'd use mpegstreamclip (although it requires the QT mpeg2 playback component for mpeg2), there are plenty of other converters many of which are free though.

  • No Sound in iMovie Import

    Hello everyone:
I am trying to import a movie from my Sony DSC W100 camera.
The movie downloads to iMovie great, but I can't get any sound. I've checked the various volume controls on the camera, computer, and iMovie and everything seems to be where it should be. (And when I play the movie on my camera, there is sound.) But not so much as a peep of sound on iMovie.
I am using the USB connection - not a firewire connection (which I don't have for this camera).
My computer is an iMac with OS 10.4.9. I'm using iMovie 3.0.3.
Any guidance or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums.
Looking quicking at some posted specs, your camera records in MPEG VX format (a form of mpeg1 or mpeg2?), which means that iMovie is converting that video format (MPEG) into a form it understands (DV Stream). If you open one of the iMovie clips using Quicktime, use the Movie Properties command to see if it has an audio track.
If there's no audio track, probably the video was muxed (audio and video mixed together). Typical recommendation is to use MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion from MPEG to DV Stream, but often you'll also need (to buy) Apple's MPEG plugin for Quicktime.

  • QT Pro Exporting To MPEG-4 Drops Sound

When I attempt to export an AVI movie to MPEG-4 QT Pro will only save the video and neglect the audio.
I have played with the audio and codec settings, all of no consequence.
    Perian and Flip4Mac installed.

Too convert MPEG to QuickTime keep in mind that MPEG already has video and audio combined. In order to convert to QuickTime the audio and video files must first be separated. This is known as "demuxing".
Download MPEG Streamclip. You will also need to have QuickTime Pro ($29.99) AND you need to have the QuickTime MPEG-2 plug-in ($19.99) in order to Streamclip to work.
    Open MPEG StreamClip
Choose Demux Setting this will separate the MPEG into two files; one file will have an extension of .aiff the other will have .m2v extension. The only problem is that iMovie does not seem to like the .m2v file. So you have one audio file, .aiif, and one video file that you cannot use, .m2v.
To get a video file that you can use:
Open QuickTime Pro and open the original MPEG. Choose File Exports QuickTime. This will export the video, but will not export the sound because QuickTime does not demux.
Now you should have three files:
    .aiff audio file
.m2v un-usable video file (you will not need this)
    .mov usable video file
    Open iMovie.
    Create a new project.
Drag in the .mov video file for the Video track.
Drag in the .aiff file for the Audio track.
From iMovie menu select File --> Share...
In Share select QuickTime, Compress Movies for Web or Web Streaming.
    Click Share.
By doing this I was able to convert a 287MB MPEG to 19 MB Streaming .mov.
    Hope that helps,

  • No Sound during iMovie playback

When I play video from the camera through imovie, I can hear sound through the computer. While importing, I hear sound through the computer. Playing the imported clip back in iMovie will not play sound. I have the audio tracks checked, etc. I can drag the clip to the desktop, and hear sound in quicktime, and I can hear the sound when exported to idvd. Any suggestions on getting sound through iMovie?

WE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM HERE AT THE ALBERNI PROJECT (ALBERNIPROJECT.ORG). WE CAN'T US ANY CLIPS OF EITHER .MOV OR .MPEG CONVERTED OVER TO .MOV AND HAVE THE SOUND COME THROUGH. WE HAVE WRITTEN TO MAC SUPPORT TWICE WITH NO RESPONSE, TOOK THE PROBLEM TO THE STORE WHERE WE PURCHASED THIS G5 FROM AND EXPLAINED OUR PROBLEM AND THEY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE "SUGGESTIONS" FROM THE HELP KEY ON IMOVIE HD WHICH DOESN'T FIX OUR PROBLEM OF NO SOUND IN PLAYBACK EDITING DURING MEDIA CREATION. - LEWIS BARTHOLOMEW - PROJECT DIRECTOR

  • IDVD burn has no sound in iMovie timeline video only

I used iMovie and iDVD to create a DVD. The DVD has an intro movie (that plays when the DVD is inserted), menus with motion and sound, a main feature with chapters, and a "bonus" short movie clip.
The intro movie, the bonus movie, and the menu movie all were dropped onto iDVD from individual .mov files. They all work fine in the disk image that I exported.
However, the main feature with chapters, which is an edited project that resides in iMovie's timeline, does not have any sound in the final exported disk image. Its sound in iMovie is contained in the 2nd audio-only track (the only one that is checked in iMovie) and it plays fine in the iDVD project.
Why is the sound missing in the exported DVD disk image, ONLY in the main feature when it works fine in the iDVD project?
It took 4+ hours to export the disk image... now it appears that time was wasted. I want to be sure that it exports correctly next time.
    I have iDVD 6.0.1 and iMovie 6.0.1
    Please help!

    Welcome Ricky Brigante
Not exactly sure what the issue is here on why it failed to burn the audio as well but did you look thru the iDVD help menu first?
Here's the info I found and I hope it's helpful:
Preparing QuickTime movies to work with iDVD
If your video-editing application can export to QuickTime, you can create movies that you can add to your iDVD project. iDVD supports most video or image files supported by QuickTime.
QuickTime movies smaller than the standard DVD size of 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL) are scaled to fit the DVD window, which may decrease the image quality.
For best results, in the QuickTime export settings of your video-editing application, choose NTSC-DV with a frame rate of 29.97 or PAL-DV with a frame rate of 25. Choose No Compression for audio and set the sample rate to 48 kHz.
Not all QuickTime formats can be added to your iDVD project. For example, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files, QuickTime VR movies, and movies with sprite or Flash tracks cannot be added.
Note: If you drag a QuickTime movie file to an audio well in iDVD, iDVD uses the first audio track in the file and none of the video.
