Converting MS word & excel to Appleworks?
I have just purchased Appleworks 6.2.9 in hope of being able to leave MS Office for Mac:2004 behind. To my dismay Appleworks does not convert MS Office 2004 documents. Is there a solution for this? Will purchasing MacLinkPlus do the trick? It looks like it can only read the Appleworks 6 documents. To me this means that it will not translate to Applework 6. My goals is to convert all my word and excel files to Appleworks 6 to edit and use. They are mainly template types that I use as forms. I just don't want to purchase more software and find it doesn't do what I expect.
Variations on this question have come up quite a bit lately. Microsoft has made many changes to the file formats since the translators in AppleWorks were released in 2001. For the past year I haven't been able to open any Word file with AppleWorks, a problem quite a few users here have posted, too. You can find some useful information in this thread.

Converting from WORD to pdf always fails the first time
OS is XP. Acrobat Pro 8.1.5. When I first convert from WORD, EXCEL, whatever the program appears to be working but no file is created. This happens always on the first time I convert to pdf for the day. Once I do it again, it works and continues to work throughout the day. I turn off my computer at night and again the next day when I come in it doesn't convert the first time but will work again. Is there something in Windows or Acrobat that I can fix to get this to work properly?
If you are using Word 2007 (you don't say) you might try the Microsoft plugin... this is instead of Acrobat

If you are using an earlier version of Word (or Word '07) make sure you have installed all Microsoft Office updates, so you'll know this is not a Microsoft bug -
How to convert a word file into PDF in command line ?

I want to convert a word (excel, powerpoint, ...) into a PDF using a windows command line.
The command :
c:\> acrodist toto.ps
is working file and the output is a PDF file (toto.pdf)
But if i try with a MS office word file it is not working
c:\> acrodist toto.doc
The output in the console is:
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: ÐÏࡱá ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
If i do a right clic on the file with the mouse and select in the context menu the option convert to PDF it is working fine :-\
How can i convert that kind of file with a command line ?

This is equivalent to using the PDFMaker facility in Word - that is,
the Acrobat button. Which is also the same thing that is done when you
use File > Create PDF > From File in Acrobat.
What it does is print to a PS file *and* do a lot of additional
processing to write stuff about links, tags etc. into the PS file.

This isn't true, but it's certainly the case that you won't get links.
There seems to be no API, via any mechanism, still less the "obsolete"
(Microsoft's view) command line, to use PDFMaker from your program.

Send a file with the screen errors and system data . Also send a couple of files PDF.
Translates only txt format.

I just purchased Adobe Acrobat in order to convert a pdf to an excel program but it appears that it will only convert to Word, not excel? Am I doing something wrong or should I cancel my subscription?

Hi there, I currently subscribe to Adobe Pro Subscription (yearly) and I also subscribe to Adobe PDF pack (monthly). I only require Adobe to read and create PDF documents such as converting word/excel document or a web based document. Can someone tell me if I'm doubling up as I'm not sure of the differences between the products and would like to save a few dollars.
Acrobat Pro can do a lot more than the PDF Pack online service.
Try if you can do everything you need with PDF Pack; otherwise keep Acrobat Pro. -
I have a user using Acrobat 10. It was installed two weeks ago and initially had no problems. Today she reported that when she tries to convert multiple word and excel docs by selecting them, and right clicking on them to select convert/combine to PDF, random pages in the finished PDF have a blue background. I did some searching online and can find no information about this problem. Can anyone here shed some light on this issue and maybe point me in the direction of a solution? Any help is appreciated. So, something I didn't consider was that this could be a setting in the office docs. The reason I didn't consider this was be cause we tested multiple docs and had similar results each time. I went back and looked into this possibility and found a setting in word that was causing this issue. Although the word doc showed no page color when opened in word, if I went to "Page Layout" -> "Page Color", a shade of blue was selected. By selecting "No Color", and then converting/combining the docs to PDF we got the desired result. Thanks again for your reply! -

It's not currently possible for Acrobat.com to merge separate files into a single PDF; this functionality is on our list of enhancements, so I encourage you to stay tuned for future releases. In the meantime, to create PDF portfolios, you'll have to use Adobe Acrobat desktop software. You can download a free 30-day trial here:

What fruhulda said. In addition, in the Mail composition window, I recommend that you select the paperclip icon from the Toolbar, and enable Send Windows-Friendly Attachments.
You can also select multiple files in the Finder and drag them onto the composition window. In my experience, the documents resist an iconic state, so right-click on just one, and choose View as Icon from the contextual menu. This will transform all attached documents into icons.
If you want to send just one document from within Pages v5, use the Share icon in the Toolbar and select Send a Copy > Email. You can then choose PDF (and its image quality), or Word (.docx default, or .doc) document formats that will be attached as an icon in a new pop-up Email composition window. -
