Converting Old Files to iWeb

I am not a website designer but years ago I learned to use BBedit to write code to produce my current website. I want to make so many significant changes to my site now (www.healingcommunication.com) that I've been thinking about using iWeb to do it--especially since I don't know Cascading Style Sheets and redoing the site the old-fashioned way is a daunting task. But there are a few concerns holding me back. Perhaps you guys could give me direction.
1) Because I'm an author and have been promoting my books and other businesses for some time, many many other websites connect to mine. I don't want those links (and the business they generate) to be lost. Is there any way I can update my old pages by creating new pages in iWeb and giving them the same names as my old pages?
2) What about PayPal shopping cart and Amazon.com links? Is there a straight-forward way for me to recreate pages with those kinds of elements on them?
3) If not, what do people think about updating some pages with iWeb in XHTML format and leaving other pages the same (HTML 4)? Is it necessary for all pages in a site to be done in the same format? Or does that screw things up?
4) Is there a program that can take the code from an HTML4 website and convert it to XHTML for me? Ideally soemthing where I can take the old code, put it in the program and have it genrate a facsimile of my site which I could then work with in the same staight-forward way I would otherwise use iWeb? (okay, I can dream, can't I?)
Thanks for any help you can offer.

You would have to give them the EXACT (case sensitive) same names and the EXACT same locations, but it is possible, I suppose.

Shopping carts are not so easy, but you can certainly do amazon links and other html additions, post-publishing.

  • Convert old files

Is there a way to convert Appleworks files to a Pages document with OS 10.10?

You would need to obtain a copy of Pages v4 ('09) which can open AW word processing documents. Then the current version of Pages should be able to open the converted documents. According to roaringapps.com Pages '09 will run on Yosemite. It's not sold by Apple any more: you would have to look for the iWork '09 box from independent retailers.
Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.

I was a kid when I made a documentary for a school project. I've been trying to figure out how to retrieve the file. 4 years ago, I was able to get the files off the Iomega Zip drive (finally), but I now see the file is saved as a .A4P. There is also a file saved as a .PKG as well, but I don't know how to open this with my Windows 8 COmputer.

.a4p is an Authorware v.4 (Windows) project.
Interesting you have it as a .pkg...usually that's a published-on-a- Mac extension, if I recall.
At any rate, can you put the file up on a Box, Dropbox, FTP, etc...and send me a URL?
I should be able to published it so you can view the project (it would be an .exe).
It can't be converted to anything though - not without manual effort.

  • How to convert old Macwrite files in 10.6.8

Years ago, users published suggestions on the Apple forums for converting MacWrite, MacWrite II and MacWrite Pro files to RTF or Word formats, but none of these suggestions seem to work anymore.  MacLinkPlus is no longer supported by its developer, and the latest version dropped support for early Mac programs anyway. Other solutions (early ClarisWorks, AppleWords, Word) only run in Classic so don't work on new Macs running 10.6
I have been able to open these files one at a time through a OS9 emulation program SheepSaver, running the original MacWrite software, but this is very slow and tedious.
Does anyone know of a program that will do this conversion in batch, a program which works in OS 10.6?  There must be thousands of people with old files who would want to update them.  I couldn't find anything in the AppStore or anywhere else.

It seems to me that you can access your files (under SheepShaver), but what you want is a batch conversion from MacWrite to something else. (This an instructive problem. Two decades ago, MacWrite was the de facto WP standard on the Mac, but nowadays we can't find a conversion utility for it. Look around in your Documents folder and ask yourself, how many of my important files will I be able to read twenty years from now.)
    I have two suggestions.
    (1) This is a bit ironic, but MacText, a rather pricy current Windoze app, claims to read and convert MacWrite files.
    (2) Or try a forum of users of 'classic' Macs (eg, Low End Macs). You could ask someone to send you an old copy of MacLink Plus, which you may be able to run under SheepShaver, or Basilisk II, or mini vMac. Alternatively (if the nature and quantity of your MacWrite docs allow), you could ask someone with the right hardware/software to do the conversion for you. Those old files can't be very big, but if they're too much for email, you can always use a service like MediaFire. Remember that, to transfer 'classic' Mac files safely, it's best first to archive them with StuffIt (.sit) and then BinHex them (.hqx).

  • How do I convert old m4p music files to m4a files?

I have old m4p music files that won't play on my phone (not an iphone).  How do I convert the files to m4a?

Those are protected files from the early days of the iTunes Store when music had DRM. Unfortunately, they're locked to the original purchase AppleID and can only be played in iTunes or the Music app of an iOS device.

Want to convert old movie files to put in Itunes.
What does "old movies" mean to you? File type, audio and/or video compression format(s)?
Can't upgrade QT player preinstalled, so downloaded QT Player 7 and purchased QTPlayer 7 Pro registration code.  Can not get it to upgrade.
Did you follow the instructions found here?
If you have a fix, you can email me direct at [email protected]
To which fix do you refer? Activatng QT 7 Pro or converting the files? Even with QT 7 Pro activated you may need to modify your QT codec component configuration depending on the file type and compression formats used to encode your "old movies." There may be many different problems here with each having one or more "fixes." Please try to be more specific regarding your questions. Converting a muxed VOB MPEG2/AC3 file would be very different different from converting an AVI DivX5/MP3 file depending on which application you are attempting to use.

No. The project files are not cross-platform.

  • Convert old Logic 5.x PST Files on PC to FXP/FXB

I'd like to know if and how I can convert old PST files in Logic 5.x on a PC to FXP/FXB (VST format) or simply make them usable in Logic Pro/Logic Studio where I've the same plugins in AudioUnit format. I'd even be willing to code my own utility if I had access to the PST file format from an older version of Logic. I really appreciate everyone's time!

If I remember correctly, Logic OSX would load PST settings files correctly (and then be able to resave as .aupresets) but only for Logic's own plugs, not for third-party ones.
You'll either have to work out your own solutions, or go back to the older versions and resave those settings in the plugins own native handling, if it has it's own patch formats....

  • Can iTunes convert a file and replace the old file with the new one?

I am trying to convert my wav files to Apple Lossless to save some space. How can I convert the files and make them replace the old files? Right now it just converts new files so that I end up with two files. I have thousands I want to convert and just replace the old ones.
I have an external program that will do it for me, however if I go that route then when my ITunes files are converted to lossless files I need to re-link the files as they show up with the ! showing they are missing. That would mean manually re-linking every song, which would take forever unless there is a way to mass re-link all the files.

iTunes does not see the newly created files as the same file because they are not the same file.  They are new, different files.  If you have a track that is 1234.wav and you create 1234.mp3 it simply isn't the same file and you can't trick iTunes into thinking it is.  iTunes will handle it as a brand new file.
Check Dougscripts web site for scripts which help modifying tag data.  However, I suspect you won't find any doing exactly what you want doing.  Some tag data are only accessible by iTunes itself.
As for playlists, there's things you can try though they may be more effort than they are worth.  For example, you could add a special code for each playlist to some element of a tag (e.g., grouping).  Convert the file, then make a smart playlist selecting for the code you added to the group of tracks in the old playlist.  If you have hundreds of playlists with a dozen tracks each this will be a grand nuisance.  If it is a handful of playlists with hundreds of tracks each this might be worth it.
Another way to preserve playlists would be to edit the .xml copy of the iTunes library file, replacing ".wav" with ".mp3" or whatever format you are using.  However, this won't help with play counts because that is only stored in the .itl copy of the file which you cannot edit.

  • Help converting old Freehand files

I have several old Freehand files, to be honest I don't
remember the versions, but they were definitely before 9. I'm on a
PowerMac running Freehand MX and Illustrator CS3 and do not have
the Classic 9 operating system still on this machine. Am I
    completely out of luck?

    > She hacks the old files, tricking AI CS3 into believing
    they are FH7 files.
My apologies. The hack trick doesn't work for old FreeHand
    files but does
    work for old AI files.
Since you are using a PowerMac (which probably came with a
    version of Mac OS
    9) I suggest installing OS9 and running FH8. A time-limited
    FH8 demo and a
batch processing script is is available here.
    http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14946
    From the same technote:
"Identifying FreeHand 3 and 4 files
On Windows, FreeHand 3 files will have a .fh3 extension, and
    FreeHand 4
files will have a .fh4 extension. On Macintosh, a FreeHand 3
    file will have
    a file type of FHD3, and a creator of FHA3. For a FreeHand 4
    file, the file
type is AGD1, and the creator is FH40."
In the event your files are older than FH3, I found FH 5.5
    did a good job of
opening and translating FH2 files. Open in FH5. Save as FH5.
    FH5 files can
then be opened in FH8 and saved as FH8 files.
Older FH installers are available here:
    http://www.freehandsource.com/
    http://www.freehandsource.com/_frames/_news/_fhnews/fh_installers.html
I found a link to a FH 5.5 demo here. Download at your own
    risk.

  • Convert old (1990) Works files

I have some old files which were created in 1990 on an SE with whatever version of Works came with those computers. The computer, the applications, and the person who created the files are no longer available. Files were text documents, spreadsheets, and databases. Is there any readily available translator? If not are the file formats available so that I could attempt my own conversion?
The text files are easy. I have an idea of what is in the spreadsheet and database files, but I do not know what data structures were used.
    Thanks,
    Lynn

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Lynn
Around 1990, the current version was likely ClarisWorks 4. What happens when you try to open these files with AppleWorks? Do you get an I/O error message? Do you even have AppleWorks?
There is a problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9, the current version, being unable to open about half of ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. The only solution is to use any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the Classic component of 6.2.9 - 6.2.8, or AppleWorks 5 in Classic. If there aren't a lot, please post back here & I will give you instructions to send them to me for conversion.
I'm not sure if the current version of MacLink Plus by DataViz can open all types of these older ClarisWorks files, but you should be able to find out from their website.

  • Display data from CSV file in iWeb page

    Hi,
I like to display data from a CSV file in iWeb page if a date value from CSV file matches todays value from the system. Here is an example.
    CSV data values
    01/20/2011,Sunny,87
    01/21/2011,Cloudy,100
    01/22/2011,Rainy,60
If today's date value is 01/21/2011 the page should display 01/21/2011 Cloudy 100 in a tabular format.
Appreciate your help in providing HTML code for this issue.
    Thanks

I suspect there is a soft return in the excel database somewhere that can't be seen. Take the csv/txt file into notepad and look for a line that starts oddly compared to the others.
I haven't had luck removing soft returns from excel files so I do this a rather odd way. I take the excel file into InDesign as a table, and then use find/change to replace any soft returns with nothing, then convert the text to table and then export the text out again by going export, and selecting text from the dropdown menu.
For my money, I always save tab delimited text files from excel so that if a field does contain commas, it doesn't "trick" indesign into thinking a new field is beginning or not... instead the field delimiters are tabs and they are unlikely to have been used in the excel database.
If you do choose to use this indesign import method of mine to clean up the database, i also noticed two things in your screengrab: first was that some fields have spaces at the start of the text... easy enough to fix with a GREP that looks for ^\s (start of a sentence followed by a space) and replace with nothing. The second thing is the T&C field that all entries (at least in the screengrab) all start the same – if all entries in the database start the same, couldn't that line be in the indesign file? Its only a small detail I know.

  • 'Error occured while converting the file--unknown error occured 0x77686174

I just got my first iPod but I'm a little frustrated. I put in a cd, iTunes opens and asks me if I want to import the songs, I reply yes. When it tries the very first song of the cd, it immediately comes up with 'Error occured while converting the file "name of song". An unknown error occured (0x77686174).' It doesn't matter if this is a completely new cd or an older one.
I ran CD diagnostics on iTunes and my results are below. I have posted this several times on many different boards and haven't found any solutions or been given any solutions from anyone. I have an iPod that I can't use because I can't download any songs...does anyone have any idea what to do?
I've looked at Dell to update drivers for my cd drive but it says that I have the newest drivers...the computer isn't even a year old yet. What do I do?? I've wiped the cd like several posts say to do, I've clicked the fix error option on cd off and on like several posts have said to do, I've changed the conversion of 128 to 64 like several posts have said to do...help please, anyone?

  • Error occured while converting the file track #1 the required disk can't be found

I have old CDs, I have new CDs and I have a relatively new MacBook Pro (3 years old) running current software on 10.9.4 OSX Mavericks. My updates are good on my iTunes but it won't let me import ANY CDs that I OWN! Is this the new Apple and it's iTunes update?
Can we not legally put our CDs onto our phones or iPad/iPods any longer? Must I go garage sale-ing for a personal CD player? The code reads; "Error occured while converting the file track #1 the required disk can't be found". My cd drive is fine btw. It reads and shows on my desktop and will also play when I double click the CD icon and play the .aiff file.

I kind of have the suspicion if you were no longer allowed to put CDs on iPods it would be front page news, not something you alone would discover.  Anyway, there would probably be a clear message to that effect rather than a technical error message.   I would take the technical problem route first rather than suspect you have been targeted for persecution.
Have you restarted iTunes?  Have you tried restarting your computer?
Personally I prefer third party rippers such as XLD and Max and you could certainly try one of those to at least isolate the issue to iTunes.
