Converting old Mac Word floppy discs to PC Word

I used to have a Mac in the '90s. I have about 10 floppy disks with mostly Word docs that I want to convert to PC format. I bought an external floppy drive from Best Buy (Dynex) and connected it to a friend's Powerbook. His Powerbook recognized the floppy drive but not the disks or anything on the disks. Called Dynex support and went to their web site. No additional drivers were available (not even sure if that was problem). The manual mentioned something about 1.4 meg or highes disks, but mine are 1.0 meg (not even sure if that was problem.) Anyway, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. I took floppy back to Best Buy.

Judy,
At this point, it would be very easy to get distracted from your original task.
You stated above:
"I've got a lot more than 10 discs at stake - figure out a way to transfer that data - from a MAC Classic II to a Pentium III?
- save the data in Rich Text Format on an IBM disc and it will translate - but that's not the problem.
The problem is that the MAC forces me to reformat the disc before it will allow me to use the disc and
once it's reformatted the Pentium will not read it unless I reformat it there and that would erase the data on the disc.
Any solutions? "
You might be tempted to focus all your energies on fixing the Classic II and forget your original task.
Let's take one step at a time. Restart your Mac while zapping the PRAM (post back if you need instructions). If it continues to act up, forget it for now. Your data is on the floppies, not your hard drive.
If your Mac starts up again, you might consider getting a zip drive or an external hard drive and installing a newer system on it. The newer system will recognize IBM disks using PC Exchange. Otherwise, find a newer replacement that is set up to do what you need to do.
Meanwhile, there are some fundamental questions raised by your comments. You said that they are IBM disks. Why does your Pentium III not read them? What computer formatted those disks in the first place? How did the data get saved to those disks?
Could it be that the 1.4 disks were inserted into a Mac with an 800k drive and it was too old to know that the disk was a newer 1.4? In that case, it is actually a Mac disk that the P III will not recognize and an improperly used Mac 1.4 disk that was formatted to Mac 800k. Then a newer Mac will not recognize it either.
By taping over the HD indicator hole on a 1.4k disk, you can insert it into a newer Mac with a Super Drive and the drive will think it is an 800k disk and 'change gears,' so to speak, to read the data tracks that are too wide for a 1,400k drive. Keep in mind that the 1.4 drive invented by Sony is really a 2,000k drive but not used to its full potential. The tracks can be read wide or narrow, variable speed or fixed speed.
There is much more history than you may want to learn. The bottom line is that there is more information required about those disks than what we know so far.
Apple File Exchange did not kill your computer but old age probably is having an effect. When you tried to access the floppy drive, AFE may have crashed because it did not know how to handle a system error caused by a dead floppy drive.
Are you in a location where you could obtain another newer Mac for a modest price? Your goal is to save data from floppies, not save a dying computer that is easily replaced. Where are you in Canada? The last individual to post with a similar dilema lived in Vancouver, could get to Seattle, WA where G3 sell for $5 and found lots of alternatives .
To recap, what computer created the disks? Are those disks truely IBM or just labeled that way? Were they created on an older Mac and then moved to a newer Mac? The facts do not add up for a Classic II to create a disk and then not recognize the disk unless the drive is failing. Time for some detective work.

  • I need to order old Mac Mini Install discs

I hear I can order from Apple, i need a phone number.
    I have a 1.5 Gh 2005 Mac Mini

Be sure to have your product's Serial Number, & a credit card, handy.
If the unit is too old, they may not be able to provide you a disc set.
Some discs, likely for early intel-based Mac, w/ Tiger & Leopard OS X
originally, were said to be available from Apple support or applecare.
These were shown by those who got some, to be white label replace-
ment install discs, at about $16 each or so. Subject to availability.

  • Convert old .mac/.me family pack emails into new apple ids

A few years ago I set up emails (.mac) for all my family as part if a .mac family account. Now my children are old enough to gave their own apple accounts I want them to be able to create new accounts with their, now .me email addresses as their Apple IDs - how do I/they do this?

Did each family member independently move their @me.com address to iCloud?  I think each address had to be moved separately to retain it in iCloud.
Simple way to see - can any of you log in to www.icloud.com with their @me.com email address and password?
If that is true, then those @me.com addresses are now merely alternate email addresses for their iCloud inbox.  Since the iCloud email address is automatically also an AppleID, they would already have an AppleID (their iCloud email address) and the @me.com would be their alternate email address for that same AppleID.
But, if you did not migrate the family pack, or each family member did not migrate their @me.com email address to iCloud back before July 1, 2012, then your entire family pack will have expired and disappeared.

I don't think any conversions are needed, just get yourself an external USB 3.5" floppy drive and drag the documents onto your iMac's HD. You should be able to locate one on Ebay or maybe even Amazon. To open them you will need something that reads .doc files like Pages, MS Word for Mac etc..

  • How do I install Creative Suite on my new Mac Book when my old Mac Book is broken and disc has been misplaced?

My old Mac Book is broken and no longer turns on. A couple of years ago I bought the Creative Suite from Apple and would like to transfer this to my new Mac Book. However, to make things more complicated I seem to have misplaced my disc. How do you suggest I can transfer the Creative Suite to my new Mac?
    Many Thanks,
    Jess

You would not want to transfer it even if you could.  Transferring doesn't work in most cases.  You need to install using installation files.  You can download those files (can only provide a general link since you didn't indicate the version)...
    Download and Installation Help -
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
You will need your serial number to activate, which is normally on the disc case.  If you registered the software when you originally installed it then you might be able to find it recorded in your Adobe account online in the My Products section.

I have a new mac.  I installed my Bridge CS4 and Photoshop CS4 that I ran on my old mac.  When I import RAW pics from my Nikon D90 they come in with the extension of .NEF.  Apparently this is not a readable form for Bridge as the picture does not appear.  I believe I need a converter to convert .NEF to .dng but I can't find one.  Any ideas?

You do not need to convert to DNG.
The NEFs from your camera model have been supported since ACR 4.6 and 5.1.
What you need to do is update your ACR plug-in to version 5.7, the latest and last version for CS4.  Right now, you are probably on ACR 5.0, the version supplied with the original release of Photoshop CS4.
Be aware that the Adobe updater is extremely unreliable when it comes to CS5, so that you must do the update manually.  There are detailed instructions on the ACR 5.7 plug-in download page.  You MUST follow those instructions to the letter.

In MAC, I want to change document size from 8.5X11 to 18X24 to create a poster to print through Staples. I created the doc originally in WORD, changed the size in WORD, converted to PDF doc. But PDF doc is still in 8.5X11. Read ADOBE support help info. Terls me to change size in application rather than printer. BUT ACROBAT Pro does not give me a page set up option in FILE. I can only find one in the printer dialog box. Help!

from the FAQs on Staples website:
I have a file that I know is a PDF, but the website claims it is not in a PDF format. What should I do?
Check to see that the file has the .PDF extension. Also, check that the filename does not have any special characters such as an ampersand (“&”).
Regarding your measurements set to centimeters rather than inches; is it just in MS Word?
Or does it occur in all other applications.
    Check your Work preferences first:
If it is happening in all your applications, check your Mac OS System Preferences.

Old Mac died. Have PE 9 and while it installs I get a licensing problem I have the original discs and the serial.  How do I fix this?  I don't need the new version and I just want to use what I have already paid for. Error 213:5

Did you migrate over the data from your old computer? If so, there's probably something you brought over that knows it's not on the same hardware as before. In that case you need to run this:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
and then go around and manually remove all the bits and bobs, not just from applications but also from hard drive>library>application support>adobe and from your username>library>preferences. Spotlight will not help you. You have to go looking on your own.
If that's not it--you just a message that you've used up your activations, you need activation support:

  • Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

  • HT1229 How I can save my EVENTS of IPhoto , from my old Mac ,  in my external disc to transfer it into my new Mac

    Hi, i need help !
I need to save All my EVENTS of iPhoto in my external hard disk, to transfer the EVENTS to my new Mac .
Please help! When I try to do it the name as I organice it disappear.
    How can I do it?

You need to transfer your iPhoto Library intact as a single entity - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Convert old Windows .prel files for use in V10 on a Mac

Hello, I've just recently upgraded to v10 of Premiere Elements on a Mac, having used v3 extensively on a PC.
Is there a way to convert old Windows based projects for use on a Mac in v10?
    Thanks,
    David Trice

No. The project files are not cross-platform.

  • Why won't snow leopard disc fit in old Mac Pro slot?

I have an old Mac Pro.  Still running 10.5.8 and trying to take the next step to Snow Leopard (10.6).  Just ordered the disc from Apple but the disc won't fit in the plastic tray of the tower!  Any thoughts ... other than ask Santa for a new computer for Christmas?

Grant, thank you so much for the quick reply.  Yes, you're right, the tower is heavy as sin!  Our more recent computers out west are iMacs which are much easier for us to deal with.  We do have the tower upright.  Bill just moved it here to our vacation house for the winter.  Is it possible [don't underestimate him] that he could have inadvertantly opened the tower DVD slot and a decidedly important part fell out during the disconnect in B'ham?  The discs don't seat themselves.  It's like they're too large by just a smidge and won't sit level in the depression.  As I close the tray the top of the opening scrapes the disc off.  It won't let it go inside so I can begin the struggle with the install itself.

  • Tiger migration assistant not finding old mac's OS X Panther Disc

My new Intel G5's Tiger Migration Assistant isn't finding my old Power Mac OS X Panther Disc.
I have several partitions on my old mac, a few for various versions of classic environment, etc., and my firmware is up to date. I just got an Intel G5 and the migration assistant is finding only the V9 partitions. It says wiating for disks to appear but the Mac OS X disc never does.
I haven't used those V9 parts in a long time. I kinda wish I had gotten rid of them.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Henry

    Thanks for the response.
I just ran across something that I hadn't seen before. In the forum it said that the user names need to be the same name on both machines. Mine is different because I want to use both on the same network eventually, and I'd since had a son with the same name so I needed to add an ititial...
If they can be different, then...
I did what you suggested, but still the only disks that appeared were the various os 9s. They are on a seperate partitioned disk, so I went in and disconnected that one. Now I start up the computer and the OS X disc is there and seems happy, but after I start the Migration Assistant now, and it leads me to the point where I have to restart the old computer after hooking up the firewire, I restart, hold the T and it starts-up and then turns off. I'm thinking that's bad.
I have a start-up issue that I didn't think was related, but I'm no guru and this is now a start-up issue. Maybe, if you ahve the time, you couls glance at that and let me know if you think so:
