Converting PAL to NTSC using Compressor, FCP or iDVD?

Hi guys,
I'm currently editing some PAL footage from a Canon DSLR which has been compressed into an Apple Prores which measures 1920 x 1080.
I need to put my finished project on a DVD so it to play in the US.
Should I export to NTSC in FCP, Compressor or simply setup iDVD as an NTSC project and hope that dropping my completed PAL is converted into NTSC?
What are my options to convert my PAL footage into NTSC and at what stage should I do it?
Finally what NTSC video format would be ideal for HD video on DVD?
Thanks in advance!

You could pay to have a post facility do the conversion, which would give the best quality. OR, do your standards conversion in Compressor or in JES Deinterlacer.
Giving iDVD an NTSC 1080 Pro Res file may work well. Do a test on a short representative section of your movie and see. If it doesn't meet your expectations, go into Compressor and resize to 729x480 anamorphic (PAR of .84); turn on Frame Controls and set Resize Filter to Best. Submit and then bring that into iDVD.
No doubt you appreciate that all DVDs are SD and that the end product, while potentially quite good, is compromised in image quality compared to your high rez original. If you want higher resolution, you have two options: red laser AVCHD disks for videos <20 minutes or Blu Ray, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
Good luck.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC using Shake?

In keeping with RTFM policy - and my relentless persuit of excellence, I noticed you can do standards conversion in Shake (or so TFM would have us believe).
So I've spent most of the morning experimenting as follows:
Export a few clips from my FCP Timeline to QT Self Contained.
Drop said Qt onto a PAL timeline and send to Shake.
    In Parameters1 - Timing:
    Select - CONVERT.
    Input Frame Rate = PAL - 25
    Interlaced - Even
    Output Frame Rate + NTSC - 29.97
    Interlaced - Even
    Output Res = 720 x 480
Motion = Fast (for the time being)
    Aspect Ratio = 1
    Fit = Resize.
RENDER > File Out Nodes > All.
    Result in FCP . . .
(With the resultant QT file in the FCP browser).
    DV PAL - 720 x 480 - 25 fps.
    Where did I err, guys??
I could slam the 720 x 480 QT back into Shake and re-time it maybe, but that's not the point.
I was interested to see that the manual says you get better quality using retime in Convert - than in Shake'sTransform Nodes . . .
Any help will be very welcome with this - there are POINTS AND PRIZES to award - and whoever comes up with the best fix could well become my hero - albeit for a very short while (my attention span's not great).

    Patrick, thanks for your input.
I was actually doing something very similar to your suggestion - because I realised that the NTSC QT would appear back on a PAL timeline.
I allowed that to remain offline and deleted the clip on the track above. Then I imported the NTSC QT into the FCP browser with DV NTSC Easy Setup - the message still appears but I'm not too worried at this stage because it suggests saving it as something else then re-importing. I thought it might be an audio setting - but no luck.
I'm pretty confident it will export to QT OK.
(And apologies for not giving you all the facts in my last post)
The biggest problem though, is the black frames that start before the end of my NTSC QT - surely it must be a (Shake) Timeline setting or something.
Once it's NTSC, the QT is 87 frames long - but it's black from frame 73!
I've spent nearly all day (UK time) searching for the right way to do this.
If I can crack it, I think this will make an excellent Standards Conversion tool.
Any ideas why Shake makes the last 14 frames black?

  • Converting PAL to NTSC in FCP

How do I convert PAL to NTSC in FCP?

    Hi
May be my Amateuristic way can be of help ?
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.

Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result.
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
(Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)
I have to send it overseas
That too can be a problem. As USA = NTSC = 29.97fps and EU = PAL = 25fps.
DO Not let iMovie or iDVD do this conversion from one to the other - Result will be Very
    BAD
I save the movie as a full quality QuickTime .mov file then I use JES_Deinterlacer to do the conversion - then I cont. in iMovie or iDVD with project set accordingly.
JES_Deinterlacer is free on Internet and there are Pro applications but not that much better and costs are astronomical.
    PAL-DVDs - don't play in US
NTSC-DVDs - usually plays well in EU
All plays well on a Mac - What ever.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

  • Convert vob files for use in FCP X

I need to convert VOB files for use in FCP X on my macbookpro in OS X Lion (10.7.5) I use Clipwrap to convert other formats, but it does not seem to accept VOB for conversion (or if it does, I have not figured out how). In searching the web, I've come across several products that tout themselves as the best, fastest, easiest VOB to Prores converters etc., some that advertise as "free" when actually only a watermarked trial version is free. I have no idea of the actual quality of any of these (some examples are Brorsoft video converter for Mac, and Acrok HD Video Converter...), and would like some input from folks w/ experience in these things before dropping $ on the problem.
In another thread on this site I read something about MPEG Streamclip, & something about needing to separately download an MPG2 converter for it w/ Lion or Mountain Lion - the process sounded confusing and I couldn't tell if it applied to my situation or not...
Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed.

MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:

  • How do I convert from PAL to NTSC in compressor?

I have a project I converted from mp4 file to Apple Pro Res to edit it in FCP.  I exported using Compressor and tried to import the files to DVD Studio Pro.  It said it can't put PAL files into an NTSC project.  I didn't even realize it was filmed in PAL (yes, I have the rights to use the footage).  How do I convert the files from PAL to put it into FCP...in Compressor?  If so, how?  Thanks for any help!

To  convert the 25fps PAL file to a 29.97fps file staying within the ProRes codec:
    • Open up compressor. In the Settings window select: Apple>Formats>Quicktime>ProRes 422
    • Select the "Duplicate Selected Setting" icon in the upper left of the Settings window
    • This creates duplicate of the preset that you can edit
    • Select the preset copy and, in Inspector, give it a new name (something like ProRes PAL>NTSC)
    • In Encoder>Video Settings>Frame rate - and change the frame rate to 29.97
    • In Frame Controls> turn them on and set Resize Filter and Rate Conversion to BETTER.  (If so set them to BEST, be prepared for a long wait)
    • In the Geometry tab, set the Frame Size to 720x480 (you don't say if the file is 16:9 or 4:3)
    • Submit the file and go have dinner. Depending on the length of the file, it may take hours.
    Have fun.

Since you've already edited it, export from fcp (file:  export:  quicktime movie - NOT quicktime conversion) with current settings.  Bring this file into compressor and apply the appropriate dvd preset.  Thencustomize the preset, changing the frame rate to 29.97 fps and video format to ntsc in the encoder panel:  the pixel dimensions in the geometry panel to 720x480 (not sure if this is necessary, but doublecheck it).  Then in the frame controls panel, enable frame controls and change the resize filter to best, and rate conversion to 100% of source and rate conversion to best.  This may take a long time to output, so you might want to do a short test by setting an in and out in the compressor preview window.
Hopefully, I haven't left anything out.  If there are any questions, post back.

  • SD Pal to NTSC Pal... using compressor?

I'm a newbie to FCP, but have a couple of questions. I have a show that is cut in Pal with all Pal sources captured in ProRes from various tape sources. I want to convert that into NTSC to version it. I understand compressor is the tool I want to use to create the conversion, but am I best to copy the timeline and change the settings to NTSC, then export it as a quicktime through compressor? I expect to have to check for upper/lower field problems as the original material is from all over, but am not sure of the process of setting up or using compressor.
    Thanks for any help

I tried a short timeline in FCP7 using SD and HD (720p) NTSC material and converted to PAL. I was able to use the SHARE menu and File>Send To>Compressor from within FCP and got what look like very good results quickly. I just ran all versions side by side in Quicktime windows with no noticeable difference. Not the best comparison, I know, but its all I had at the moment. Hope this helps clarify a bit.

  • URGENT!! Converting PAL to NTSC

    Hi all
I need a reply on this badly!!
I just [so I thought] converted a PAL Anamorphic FCP Movie to NTSC Anamorphic QT using the Standards Conversion NTSC Anamorphic Preset in Compressor. RESULT: The Aspect Ratio has changed BUT when imported into an NTSC project in FCP Item Properties says its frame rate is 25 fps and not 30 or 29.97 AND when dropped into an NTSC Sequence it requires rendering for the video and audio streams. [Using Compressor 2.01 & FCP 5]
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP, EXTREMELY URGENT!!!
    [email protected]

Just had a quick go taking a 4:3 pal clip (no anamorphic to hand) and outputted to Anamorphic NTSC and I got 30.12 fps! It seems something is up with compressor (search here)
If totally pushed for time try JES Deinterlacer its free, otherwise pop for
    http://www.nattress.com/standardsConversion.htm
EDIT: It appears you must turn on frame controls (searching here) to get the frame rate corrected. You may want to set everything to the fastest since frame controls can take time to process

  • Converting PAL to NTSC for a dvd

I have a quicktime PAL movie that I want to burn to a dvd to send to the US as NTSC.
    It's just a short movie using 720 x 576 size and 25 fps.
When I set up iDVD it warns me just before burning that I am trying to burn an NTSC dvd using a PAL format media and I don't know if this will result in a poor quality or an unplayable movie.
Can anyone please advice how to change the PAL movie to NTSC in Compressor so that I can make a good quality version of the PAL file into an NTSC file?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Hi
Just going from iMovie (PAL) to iDVD (NTSC) does work BUT VERY BAD RESULT
    I do.
    • In iMovie Export out as QuickTime full Quality QT.mov file
    • Use JES_Deinterlacer - Google it - It's FREE
    • Here I open the QT.mov and let it convert to NTSC - VERY GOOD - and save with a new name
    • Open iDVD and make a NTSC project
    • Now import the converted movie
    • Burn
To make sure that it plays well in US I also do.
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk - Others not interesting
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    • I set in iDVD pref/Advance/burn speed down to x1
This has worked for me and been confirmed from sunny Calif.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC and making a DVD

I have a couple of .avi files, some are in PAL and others in NTSC, I wanna make a DVD in NTSC mode, How can I convert the files?

    Hi
This is not easy and You need other programs to do this.
    .avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.
This may work - I had great problems to get .avi into anything usably.

  • Burning converted PAL to NTSC movie file on to DVD

    Hi.
I'm having a few problems based around standards conversion from PAL to NTSC. I have some old home movies (PAL footage from my time in Europe) which I have been editing in iMovie. I have (I think) successfully converted the finished project into an NTSC format. However, when I burn to DVD in iDVD I am getting nasty red and green vertical lines ruining the picture when played in my home DVD player. This disfiguration seems to be triggered or coincides with any peak in the audio.
Is this a PAL -> NTSC standards conversion problem? A problem with the file I am burning to my DVD through iDVD, or a problem with my home set up? Needless to say the movie plays fine on my Mac and my home set-up plays other commercial DVD's perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and Happy New Year.
    Tom

    Hi tommycrops
Welcome to apple discussions. I suggest narrowing the issue down as much as possible ... one idea is to make a disc image to the desktop of the finished iDvd. Test playback with apple's dvd player. Assuming it plays as expected then burn to Verbatim Dvd-R at 4x.
Also make sure all energy saver controls (in system pref's) are set to Never while working within iDvd. Disconnect all external third party devices prior to burning the dvd.
If none of the above works for you then go back to your original iMovie project file, check all movie properties and try to open it within QT Pro/player prior to burning. You'll need to verify playback prior to burning.

  • Convert PAL to NTSC

Hi I have a project filmed and edited using PAL standards.
Using elements 3 can i produce a DVD that can be played in the USA and if so how?
    Dai

Yes, I have done this with PE2 at the DVD output stage. It takes about 20% longer to render because it needs to generate the extra frames and, for the same reason, pans can appear jumpy. The picture loses some detail, presumably because of the differently mapped pixels. The quality is disappointing compared to the originals.
Unfortunately only a few DVD players available in the US will play PAL DVDs directly, although I am told that apparently there are ways to edit the files on the DVD to persuade the DVD player to decode the PAL based MPEG2 files as if they were NTSC.
Of course, if the end user of the DVD is content to view it on a computer then the PAL DVD will work.
My biggest difficulty was testing the NTSC DVD in UK because although all my DVD players will read NTSC disks, I was not sure whether the quality degradation was on the disk or in the playback from a DVD player to a PAL TV. However when I eventually got the disks to the USA and played them back on a state of the art Sony installation, it was clear that the problem is with the standard conversion.

  • Can FCP convert PAL to NTSC on capture ?

I have a miniDV tape that was shot in PAL and I'm trying to find out if I can use FCP 4.5 to convert the tape into NTSC to use in a movie I'm making. I'd rather no take the tape to an A/V store and have them convert it for me. I'm not sure if FCP can do this but any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this tape has the key video that I need to use for my movie. Thanks.

    Hi Rob.
As well as the Natress thing (great person, good service) you might like to try 'JAS Deinterlacing'. I think that's how it is spelt. I use it all the time. It is free. And gives quite acceptable results. Run a Google on it.
The way it works is that you import your stuff in FCP in PAL and than export the clip or sequence as a QT reference movie (you know, don't click the 'self contained' box), import into Jas and away you go.
    Hope that helps.

  • Converted pal to ntsc movie stops 30 seconds short of end

    Hi all,
I have to make a dvd for viewing in America and am making a NTSC version incase the pal version does not work.
For some reason after I have converted the sequence (to ntsc pal)in FCP and then dropped it into IDVD two things happens.
Firstly the Movie has a flicker of black in between every edit (which I could probably live with) but secondly it stops exactly 28 seconds from the end of the 2 minute 54 second second sequence.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    justin

    Hi
    I do it another way.
In FCE/P I work with same standard as recorded (eg PAL)
Save as Full Quality QuickTime .mov
    • NOT Selfcontained
    • NO QuickTime Conversion
Then I convert this movie in JES_Deinterlacer (Can also use MPEG Streamclip or
the program in FCP bundle to do conversions (Compressor 3,))
Now I start a NTSC DVD project in iDVD and burn my DVDs.
They play well in Calif. USA

  • Converting pal to ntsc + having compressed files go directly to 2nd HD

    I really have two questions:
First of all, I'd like to convert my PAL footage to NTSC. It seems so easy in the tutorials, but here's at least what I'm doing:
From FCP, I'm clicking "export to Compressor", but then I have not been able to locate the area where the footage can be switched to NTSC that I'm seeing in the tutorial.
Secondly, although my mac book pro has limited low amount of memory, I would like to know if there is some way to have the compressed files go directly to my second Lacie Hard Drive. As of right now the only option appears to be to "this computer". An equally good answer to this could be to help me at least for now move all files related with things such as "Live type" that I'm not really currently using to my second Hard drive to free up space (I don't just mean the application itself 35.6 MB that is pretty small, but all the things that go with it).

    to answer the second part of your question;
in the batch window, to the left of your project, you'll see a little arrow. click on it to "unfold" your project and you'll see the separate entries that will be encoded separately.
select all of them and now take a look at a menu at the top of your screen labeled "destination"
    try the option "other..."
your questions suggest that it might be a good idea for you to first do a runthrough with a simple, straighforward project before getting into standards conversion as you'll probably be unhappy with the results without tweaking...
the manual's "getting started" section is a good place to start
    good luck
