Converting PC NTFS file system to Mac

I have just got a Mac and want to user the external hard drive that was previously used by my PC. I do not have read/write permission to the external hard drive - I guess because it is formatted for NTFS. Do I need to reformat the external drive to allow my Mac to be the primary user of it with full access?
I have copied all the data off the external drive in anticipation so assume that I need to reformat it from my Mac and then copy the data back? Is that right or is there anehotr way? If re-format is the way to go what tool do I use - Disk Utility?
Thanks in advance.

Yep... You answered your own question
OS X can read from NTFS formatted drives, but it cannot write to them. You can use Disk Utility to reformat the drive. The most common format to use (if PC compatibility is not an issue) is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)). If you want to use the drive on both Macs and PCs, you can select the MS DOS format option. That will format the drive in FAT32 so you can use it on both Macs and Windows machines.

  • USB Hardrive NTFS file system

Ive just changed from windows to mac. I am now having a bit of a problem. With my old windows computer i used a 180gb usb hardrive on NTFS file system. I can read the files on my new mac but i cant put anything on there. So i now realise i have to convert the hardrive to a mac file system. But i have lots of files on there and i assume reformating will wipe all the files??? Does anyone have any suggestions of what i can do? I also have one final question if and when i do format which is the best file system to use? and is there anyfile system other than FAT32 that will work with mac and windows?

The Mac can only read NTFS, not read.
My suggestion would be a) move the things to another already formatted external drive, b) get lots of DVD's and start making those archive copies that you've been putting off for so long, c) move the files onto the Mac temporarily and reformat the drive and then put them back on the external drive.
For maximum interoperability you'll want FAT32, if you are going to do that it'd probably be easier to offload the files onto your PC, reformat and then move them again.
I recently did this and I went through the files on the drive first and found that I could delete a lot of the files that I had on there so good luck.

  • Are ntfs files compatable with mac os lion

are ntfs files compatable with mac os lion

Files aren't ntfs or hfs or ufs or zfs.
Those are file systems that is the basis for how the OS stores the files on the computer. Files are store inside a file system, but the file system doesn't normally affect the file itself.
Mac OS X can natively read nt file systems. If you want to write, then you'll need something like Siddharth Khanna pointed out. I've also used Tuxera's product. You can use a combination of MacFuse and NTFS-3G for free, but if you need normal everyday access, that's going to fall short, I think.
On the other hand, Windows can't natively handle HFS+ at all. If you need to format an external drive to work with both, I'd suggest using exFAT. Mac OS X from 10.6.6 on can read and write it, and Windows back to some version of XP can read/write it. As the name implies, it is much like FAT, but on steroids. It can handle very large file sizes and disk sizes.

  • Is there a way to configure NTFS file system on an NSS 324 SmartStorage unit. So far I can setup ext 3 or ext 4 but no option for NTFS

Is there a way to configure NTFS file system on an NSS 324 SmartStorage unit. So far I can setup ext 3 or ext 4 but no option for NTFS. This unit should be joining a Windows Server 2008 R2 network and needs to be shared with all users. This unit will replace a File server running Win 2003 SP2.

Thank you very much for your reply. The idea is to decommission the Windows file server which is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 operating system but is not running as a DC but just a member server. All this server is doing is providing file server services so my idea is to replace it with the NSS 324 box. My only concern is that when my NSS joins the domain all my users would be able to see and access network shares transparently, the same way they saw the former W2003 file server. After I transferred the data from File server I will use the same for NSS that was used for file server as well as same IP address and folders path as before.
    Any suggestions or advice?
Once again thank you very much for your reply.
    Cheers,

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

Also I have tried other products previously downloaded to convert a 7 page PDF file on my Mac and convert it to a Word doc but everything I have tried is converting the file to display some text correctly but also displays random symbols and fonts in place of the handwritten info filled in on the form... also getting blank pages included instead of the info??? • Convert ZFS root file system to UFS with data.

Hi, I would need to covert my ZFS root file systems to UFS and boot from the other disk as a slice (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0)
I am ok to split the hard disk from root pool mirror. any ideas on how this can be acheived?
    Please sugget. Thanks,

from the same document that was quoted above in the Limitations section:
    Limitations
Version 2.0 of the Oracle VM Server for SPARC P2V Tool has the following limitations:
Only UFS file systems are supported.
Only plain disks (/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0), Solaris Volume Manager metadevices (/dev/md/dsk/dNNN), and VxVM encapsulated boot disks are supported on the source system.
During the P2V process, each guest domain can have only a single virtual switch and virtual disk server. You can add more virtual switches and virtual disk servers to the domain after the P2V conversion.
Support for VxVM volumes is limited to the following volumes on an encapsulated boot disk: rootvol, swapvol, usr, var, opt, and home. The original slices for these volumes must still be present on the boot disk. The P2V tool supports Veritas Volume Manager 5.x on the Solaris 10 OS. However, you can also use the P2V tool to convert Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 operating systems that use VxVM.
You cannot convert Solaris 10 systems that are configured with zones.

  • Convert Windows Excel File into a Mac Excel File

I have transferred my Workout Journal spread sheet over from my girlfriends PC (which I use often) . Problem is, I can't access it the file on my Mac in Excel or Numbers. It's currently in .xlsx format, I tried simply renaming as an .xls file but it wouldn't open properly on either application.
How do I convert this file Windows file into a Mac readable file. Thanks
    All help appreciated

You cannot read Excel ".xlsx" form files using older versions of Microsoft Excel than the 2011 version of Office for Mac or at all in Numbers.  You will either have to Upgrade your version of Excel on your Mac to "Office for Mac 2011", OR go back to your girlfriend's computer and resave the file using "Save As ..." and there select the ".xls" compatibility format instead of the default ".xlsx" version that the newer versions of Excel use.

  • RAW files converted to JPEG files on my mac can't be seen by my customer who has a PC: WHY?

I have been using Adobe CS5 for over a year now but only recently discovered how Adobe Bridge helps with work flow and post processing. My first time using Bridge I put all my RAW NEF files into folders and, after processing them in Photoshop, put all the JPEG files into a seperate folder. Before sending said JPEG images to my client, I batch renamed them to make sure the image file numbers were in the proper consecutive order. My client, who is a PC user, received these images and said she was unable to view them. Her computer system isn't outdated and I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm wondering if there was a formating change that happened when I did the batch rename or if the problem is Adobe Bridge altogether? I did all these on my Mac Book Pro which is only a year old..What am I missing??

Did each image have its .jpg extension? i think Windows likes to see the extension, Macs don't care.

I have an external drive that was previously associated with my PC laptop that was stolen.
I wish to take ownership of folders.
Can anyone help me with this.

Use a third party tool to allow your computer to use ntfs formatted drives.
Or, just copy the folder/files to your computer then use them. OSx can read ntfs drives so copy will work. After you copy the files to your computer, format the drive for OSx then use the drive with your computer with read/write functionality.
