Converting PDFs to PDF/X-1a: yay or nay? (prepress question)
Hey, folks. As part of my production duties for a nationally distributed monthly mag, I receive PDF ads and check them over to make sure they're suitable for print (CMYK colours, bleed, type safety, 300 DPI, etc.), for which I use Acrobat's preflight window to run a bunch of automated checks. Our workflow involves importing each PDF ad into an InDesign-created page layout, then exporting PDFs for our printer as PDF/X-1a:2001 compliant (based on [Press Quality] PDF settings, slightly tweaked, using CMYK US Web Coated SWOP v2).
While I still (try to) check over my files thoroughly regardless, to ensure everything runs smoothly, I've been converting the PDFs to PDF/X-1a (SWOP). While my files don't get flagged from the printer regardless of if I do this (and their instructions don't specify that I should be doing this), I find that it takes care of a whole bunch of issues I can run into.
-Can significantly reduce the file size. Had a client send over Illustrator-created PDFs which were 81.2MB. After conversion: 2.1MB, with no noticeable degredation in image quality.
-Converts RGB/device dependent colours to CMYK (doesn't take care of spot colours unless I specify, though).
-Takes care of issues where exporting the PDF in InDesign comes up with warnings about images not being OPI compliant.
At the same time, I've lately been questioning it, as I've been encountering a few cases in which I probably should be leaving the thing alone.
-I had one ad where the raster image quality actually took a hit, showing classic signs of JPG compression (blocking, pixellating, etc.)
-One ad actually shifted some text around.
-Transparencies are flattened to the point that they are much harder to edit in Illustrator.
That being said, for you guys, do you feel it's worthwhile to do any sort of conversion, or does it just cause more trouble than it's worth?
Thanks for the response. Yeah, I'm a total digital packrat, so I make a point of not throwing stuff away if I have the chance.
If you got a few minutes to spare, can you check out one of the print ads I was talking about? http://goo.gl/FBPsN (5.5MB PDF). I used the Preflight fix, "Convert to PDF/X-1a (SWOP)" under PDF/X compliance and even though I just upgraded to CS5.5, it still shifts two characters over.
I'm wondering if it's the settings that I used (just used the defaults), but it definitely tells me that I have to watch this stuff like a hawk and that PDF/X-1a conversion is not a digital prepress panacea. Have you ever experienced images taking a hit in quality (ie: introducing JPG image compression)?

<b></b><b></b><b></b>Hi Prashant,
Thanks for your reply. Really it is very useful one.
In this, the output list is getting populated into spool and to pdf.
But my requirement sending the internal table contents to spool directly without dispalying in the output list.
I did the program like the above mentioned one already. But my requirement is not that one.

Converting report to PDF and mailing
Hi every one,
I've gone through various threads and i'm aware of the Functional module's used to
convert the report to pdf and mail it back.Like CONVERT_OTFSPOOLJOB_2_PDF, CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF and for mailing we have SEND_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1.
I've worked with this but my problem is i'm not able to convet the report output to pdf.When i'm doing this i'm getting the output of my functional module converted to pdf like the number of header and item records available for the given data in the selection screen.
Since all the threads i've gone through is converting the single internal table which has the output to pdf.
But i've got the REUSE_ALV_HIERSQL_LIST_DISPLAY, hierarchial report which as known has got two internal tables.How to the same to this kind of report....More over is it possible to convert report to pdf in online without transfering it to spool and getting the spool id to convert it to pdf.........
Any help or suggestions will surely be rewarded......
Thanks in Advance.....Here is the complete code for you;
It Converts spool request into PDF document and emails it.

this generates spool in SP01. Ideally it should generate a PDF spool file but it generates a BIN file of Format G_RAW. When I display the spool it displays all kinds of japanese characters which does not make sense,.
I setup printer ISJB with device type JPPDF (PDF converted for Japanese characters). Does any one know where the problem could be? Why I could not print the Spool in PDF?
Thank you,

I am trying to convert an Adobe pdf article file with a play button to an iTunes or other accessible file for people with visual impairments. The file has been converted to a format that has a play button; however, the computer does not have a keyboard stroke that leads to the play button. In other words, the play button isn't integrated into the accessible format; only sighted people can access the play button. The individual is using an Apple laptop.
Can someone help me please?

How to add page numbers to a PDF in Adobe but maintain the ability to convert to a PDF/A
I have an PDF in adobe that I am able to convert into an adobe PDF/A document. However, when I use the header/footer option to add page numbers to the document it is no longer able to convert to a PDF/A document. How can I add page numbers and still be able to convert the document to a PDF/A?

Acrobat 11 Pro - problem with right-click "Convert to Adobe PDF" output folder
I'm migrating from one machine running Windows XP Pro with Acrobat 8 Pro to Windows 7 Pro with Acrobat 11 Pro.
On the XP machine, when I right-click on a document and select "convert to Adobe PDF" the process works just fine - it always outputs the file to the target destination I have set in the Adobe PDF printer definition.
On the Windows 7 Pro/Acrobat 11 Pro machine, the exact same settings are ignored: the PDF will always end up in the same folder as the source file.
Both the source folder and the destination folder are on one of my office's networked drives.
Under the Printing Preferences, I have the output folder address set the same on both machines, so it *should* go to the right location on the new machine.
Oddly enough, on the Acrobat 11 Pro machine, if I select Adobe PDF as the default printer and do a test print, it *does* print to the correct folder!
This has got me stumped!
Thoughts?
(update from later in the day)
If Adobe PDF is selected as the default printer, I *can* select a bunch of documents, right-click, select "print", and Word will open up, and they'll print to the correct target folder.
So, it's "just" the right-click "Convert to Adobe PDF" that doesn't work correctly.The reinstall is typically the last ditch effort to do. The first step is Help>Repair and Help>Updates. As far as Office 2013, the PDF Maker of AA X is not compatible and you can only print. In your list of errors it showed a problem with AcroTray.exe. As a first step, go to the print and select print-to-file. The file will be a PS file (maybe with a PRN extension). Once the printer if finished, open the file in Distiller to complete the process. If that is successful, then the problem is with AcroTray. Check your running tasks to be sure AcroTray is indeed running. If not, that is likely the problem. If it is, then restart it (it is located in the Acrobat folder). AcroTray provides the interface between the PS creation and Distiller to automate the process of creating the PDF.

Error while converting RTF to PDF
Hi,
I have got a requirement to convert .rtf file to .pdf file while downloading. The .rtf file is in application server. I have used the FM CONVERT_RTF_TO_ITF to convert to ITF format. After this I am using the FM CONVERT_OTF to convert it to pdf format. But in this step I m not getting the pdf format file. I am getting an exception 'ERR_BAD_OTF'. Is there any other step in between after converting to .itf format and convert_otf. Can any one please help me on this.
Thanks & Regards,

The co-worker was receiving the same error in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0 before we updated her to AAP 9.1.3.
I have read some other threads similar to mine but none of them answer the question well enough to try anything listed there. My co-worker can email me the Word file and I can print the file to my Adobe PDF printer just fine. I have Acrobat Pro 7.0.
Can anyone give me help on the cause and or solution to this problem????Hi,
- syntaxerror indicates the file contains unintelligible PostScript code.
Any discussion of postscript errors, seem to consistently point to:

please tell me how to solve this?Hi,
I will tell you the steps to follow. Check if you have done it in the same way.
1. Call the FM for smartforms. The imoirting parameters should contain t_otf_from_fm of the TYPE ssfcrescl ( you have used a diff declaration i guess).
2. Move this work are into an internal table say IT_1 of type itcoo .
3. Call the FM " CONVERT_OTF ", by passing the parameters as
format = 'PDF'
max_linewidth = 132
IMPORTING
bin_filesize = w_bin_filesize
TABLES
otf = t_otf
lines = t_pdf_tab
4. You could then call the method CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>file_save_dialog to save this PDF to your desktop
Let me know if you have followed this.

Error while converting Image -to- PDF and then to PDF/A
Hi,
I'm trying to convert a Image format(JPEG,bmp,tiff) to PDF and then to PDF/A. I could able to convert Image to PDF successfully.
I'm getting the below error while converting the PDF(that was generated) to PDF/A.
Caused by: com.adobe.livecycle.output.exception.OutputException: Input Document is a already flat PDF Document

Error OCCURRED: ALC-DSC-000-000: com.adobe.idp.dsc.DSCException: Internal error.
Please give me the solution to convert PDF to PDF/A?I've just read a footnote in the API documentation which indicates that the transformPDF function cannot be used for this purpose:
"GS_Enterprise said on Nov 24, 2007 at 12:03 PM :
Please note that the parameter "inPdfDoc" for transformPDF assumes that the stream content is an XFA-based PDF, and that it's not an XFA-based PDF with a PDF background (also known as "XFA foreground"). In other words, this function does not convert any input PDF to PDF/A, but only those PDFs generated from an XFA template which does not include any static PDF content as a background." -

Conversion of postscript (converted from secure or encrypted pdf) to pdf
I have a postscript file which has been created from secure or encrypted (opening restriction) pdf.
Now when i use distiller to convert this postscript file to pdf then distiller cannot produce a pdf file.
The log file contains following text:
This PostScript file was created from an encrypted PDF file.
Redistilling encrypted PDF is not permitted.
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
1) Is there a way to convert this postscript file into pdf ?
I have a limitation that i cannot remove security from secure pdf.
2) Do distiller provide any settings which can be changed to convert
this kind of ps(from secure pdf) to pdf.
3) Can we provide password to distiller during process of conversion to
pdf.
4) If above methods do not work then is there a way we can
programatically using Distiller Api's for conversion to pdf.
Like methods 'FileToPdf' etc.
Thanks in advance.I am facing a similar problem.
My workflow dictates that I convert the input PDF job initially to PS and finally back to PDF. If the input PDF file is secure (it's not encrypted - you will still be able to open the document), the redistillation of PS to PDF fails while using Normalizer 6.0 && 9.0 libraries. If I use Normalizer 505 library, the redistillation succeeds. I have checked with the same generated PS on both Distiller 6.0 && 9.0, and both the versions fail to reconvert as well. I am a little surprised that 6.0 and 9.0 will fail to do something that 505 library manages.
Any suggestions?

ICE and JQuery Effects -- Don't even think about it
Hey All-- ICE would appear to be a great, simple solution except for one major flaw: clients for small marketing sites often want basic slideshow functionality (a la Jquery Cycle or Lightbox). These scripts hide elements on a page, and hence there is
