Converting Photos

Trying to prepare a small newspaper ad. Is there a way, after dragging a color photo into Draw or Paint, to convert it to Black & White or Grayscale ? I know I can go through iPhoto...just looking for a quick way in AW.
Thanks,
Lenny

Go to the "File >Print..." menu. From the "Copies & Pages" pop-up, select "ColorSync". Click on the "Quartz Filter" and choose either "Black & White" (if it's just line art), or "Gray Tones". Finally, click on the PDF button and choose "Save as PDF".

  • Convert photo to line art?

    Dear Forum,
I am trialing Elements and Illustrator but cannot find a solution in help or the forums, or any book at Borders, so I hope someone can help.  I am looking for a way to convert photos (JPEGS) of flowers to black line art......like a coloring book, not just black and white or grayscale or sylhouette. I will then print out the line art (1-2 pixel black line art) to clear acetate for use as a positive original for creating a silkscreen via photo emulsion exposure (and then silkscreen printing the line art to fabric for hand painting). I am doing this by hand now.....place a sheet of acetate over the photo and outlining "edges" by eye with a fine Sharpie, then using that as the positive original. See attached file for an example. The line art needs to be relatively detailed ( e.g. petals, stamen, leaves) but not absolutely perfect as I only need to print guide lines on fabric for subsequent hand painting. It seems easy to do by "eye", tracing edges of color or tone change, but I have not figured out how to make that happen in Elements or Illustrator. Of course I have only had the trial for a couple days, and have used live trace, posterization, etc, but have not been lucky. Please point me in the right direction. If I can make this happen with an Adobe product, then I will buy it.....I have hundreds of photos to convert. Thanks.....Bob

If you use Threshold, you can add some gaussian blur to the image to make the edges smoother. You can also add a brightness/contrast adjustment layer between the blurred image and the threshold layer to fine tune the edges.
If you have Windows, you might want to look at Medhi's Fine Threshold filter (freeware) found here:
    http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/finethreshold.htm
Edit: You could also use Find Edges on the image first; desaturate it; then use a threshold adjustment layer. Go back to the Find Edges layer and add gaussian blur to taste. To further fine tune, slip a brightness/contrast layer between the blurred image and the threshold to control line thickness/detail. (FWIW, I would make a copy of the Find Edges layer and blur the duplicate so if you change your mind you don't have to start the project from scratch.)

  • Convert photos using the Tools Photoshop Imagine Processor (Photoshop CS 5)

All of a sudden, I am having issues when I attempt to convert photos using the Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor option in Adobe Bridge.  I used this methodology in the past and the conversion to JPG or TIFFs would fly with no interruption.  Now I am getting now getting getting dialog boxes with "New Snapshot" in the title,  I click OK, then get a message, "The command "Feather" is not currently available," I click "continue, and gert a "New Layer" dialog box, I click OK, and  get a "Fill" dialog box, I click OK and the JPG or Tiff is then generated.  This series then starts over on the next photo to generate.  I am using Photoshop CS5 on a MAC.  I did uninstall and re-install Photoshop l, but I am getting the same series on messages.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

It sounds like you have an action running when processing the photos
Look at the bottom of the image processor dialog and and see if Run Action is checked

  • Convert Photo(s) To DNG not permitting multiple conversions

I'm having a problem where, for extended periods, I can only individually convert photos to DNG.
Even when I have all images in a folder selected, the menu dialog reads "Convert photo to DNG...".
Currently, I'm experiencing this with Lightroom 2.3, but the problem has intermittently been an issue back to Lightroom 1. I'm using an Apple MacBook Pro, currently v10.5.6, with 4GB of RAM and ~ 10 GB of free disk space (admittedly not much, but the sooner I can get files converted to DNG, the sooner they're archived off of my hard drive).
Any one else having this problem? Any ideas what to do about it?
The image at the following link is a partial screenshot: http://lunasa.net/samples/Convertphoto.png

You need to be in Grid view before will operate on multiple selected images. The screenshot shows that you're in loupe view.

  • BUG Before/After Function stopped working after Convert Photo to DNG

    Hi,
I just converted all my photos to DNG using Lightroom's Convert Photo to DNG function and the Before/After " \ " function (in Develop module) is not working anymore... same problem in Lightroom 3.0
    regards,
    Danny

I processed a Nikon .nef raw file in Lightroom
.  Then I went to the Library Module under
Library and chose Convert to DNG.  After the conversion
the complete history was still available.  However, the Before/After function using \ or Before/After Views did not work.  It was necessary to click on the History State to compare views.  Using the Before/After Views, the original could be compared to the processed view by clicking on the Import state.
This will not be a problem if the files are converted to DNG during initial import.
I also recommend backing up originals and all processed files along with the Lightroom database on a least two drives on location and another off-site.

  • Metadata baked-in after Convert Photo to DNG?

Since I did Convert Photo to DNG to all my photos (originals were .CR2 and were Developed as well) it seems that Lightroom baked the previous metadata (XMP) to the new .DNG files so now, when I hit the " \ " keystroke to see " Before " (under Develop module) Lightroom now thinks that " Before " is the current state...
This is really bothering me, is it normal that there is no more " Before " state just because I converted all my photos to .DNG
Also, Lightroom history is now showing me " From Matadata " as the last action in the History list... Althought I never used the " Read Metadata from File " function...
So basically, I just converted to DNG all my photos and would like to be able to use the Before function " \ " under the develop module as I use to do with the .CR2...
    any help would be appreciated!
    thanks!

  • Convert photos to line drawings

Would like to convert photos to line drawings to use as coloring books. Any help for a lightweight user would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Try the following:
Duplicate your image (Control J, or Command J)
Set your foreground and background colors to black and white (press D) for default
    Then go to:
    Filter
    Filter Gallery
    Sketch Folder
    Photocopy
Slide the detail slider to 1 and the darkness slider to 50
Depending on your photo you may wish to adjust these sliders for
    different results.
Because you duplicated your original photo you also have the option of lowering the opacity of the sketch layer to reveal the partial color photo below.
Anothering interesting twist is if you add a normal WHITE mask to the sketch layer then paint with a BLACK over parts of the sketch to reveil the colored photo below (half sketch and half photo).
Attached is a link to a free plugin for Photoshop called THREDGEHOLDER, it does pretty much the same thing but even quicker.

Hope it works and have lots of fun in the process!

Is the Photosmart C410a capable of converting photo negatives to photos on the computer?  Please advise.

    HI,
No its not, you need a unit with a scanner that is capable of scanning transparant media. This means it has a extra light in the lid. Last HP printer that had this feature was the c8180. Not sure about the scanners only units. I do now there are special scanners out there just for this purpose and they are not to expensive.

  • I need help to convert photos in the .swf format to a format that will open on iOS

I need help converting photos in the .swf format to a format that will work on my Mac.  Thanks

SWF is a Flash file that should be able to be opened with your web browser on your Mac. Probably not on iOS though.
You will likely need to find the source file for the application that created the SWF and the image will be in that. You could then export/extract the image and have it as a stand alone file.
It does look like there are applications that can do what you are looking for though: https://www.google.com/search?q=SWF+to+JPG

  • Sending a photo heavy PDF for book printing on a web press.  Convert photo in photoshop first or Acrobat 11?

    Hi,
The printing company for our photo book on Loons, uses roll fed web presses.  They have asked for a pdf set to X-1a.
First soft proof was light and washed out.  Printer had us increase saturation and contrast.  Second proof
all our blue water photos come out more purple then blue.
We currently  used srgb jpeg photos embedded in a ms word document.  We used acrobat 11 to create the pdf using the request X-1a
    setting.
Should we have converted the photos in photoshop to the requested setting first and then embedded them in word?
    Thanks for any help.

Can you show us screen shots of your X-1 PDF Settings ( i.e., Color )?  The reason why I ask is my default Distiller PDF-X1a:2001 Settings use a working space of RGB = sRGB IEC61966-2.1; and CMYK = US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 with the "Color Management Policies: "Convert All Colors to CMYK" ( default ); Rendering Intent ( default is "Preserve" ).  Have you discussed these settings with the print service provider?  These settings, if they are identical in Acrobat 11, would appear to have the same RGB work space as your original sRGB based pics. I sense that Word, although not a color managed application, would work as an image carrier into Acrobat 11 where the image files may retain their profiles going into Acrobat 11 and remain intact going out of Acrobat 11 via a PDF-X1a.  In which case, the print service provider then RIP and Prints the file for a hardcopy proof. In your case, the previous digital printer did a good job reproducing the photos as you supplied them, Word or no Word.  The question now becomes what changed with this new service provider?  Their prepress people must of accepted your documents and pushed them through their workflow.  So, what changed? I know of no way to "swap" images using Acrobat.  In your case, it may be a matter of saving a second set of files or the entire book document as a copy and replacing the pics in that file, then create a second PDF-X1a file.  And, as a third option, use InDesign ( however, no point in using it until you've determined where the problem with quality lies ).  If I assume the printer told you that the sRGB files were sufficient and, if you used the X-1 PDF Settings when Saving As > PDF, that would be their preferred workflow and the image files rendered dull and unsaturated ( as they did in your case ), and the printer recommended you increase the saturation and HUE of the images ( which he did ) and the entire workflow worked for a digital printer in the past ( which it did ), then something changed with this new print service provider.  You have to find out from them what it could be.  It could be something with their direct-to-plate equipment.  I believe it merits further research and development with the new service provider.  There is a solution.  You just have to find it.
"Once the pdf is created could I swap out the photos
for ones that had been converted from RGB to CMYK in photoshop with  Rendering Intent and Black Point Compensation etc. filled. "...
Wait a minute.  You did a RGB-to-CMYK conversion in Photoshop?  Why?  I thought you embedded the RGB files in Word?  Then, Acrobat did the conversion using the X-1 settings mentioned above.
"How hard would it be to dump my word document into InDesign with  the newly created RGB or CMYK photos would it work better?  Is the learning curve too much of a hassle for one off?"...
Yes it would.  But, your procedures worked for the digital printer.  Why not now with the new printer?  That's my question.  Since Acrobat's X-1 settings have a work space of sRGB ( assumed ), then your sRGB files should render appropriately and they do not.  You have to find out what works for this new print service provider and, whatever Photoshop Color Setting RGB workspace you use, use it in Acrobat 11.  Discuss the entire document and Photoshop setups with the new print service provider.

  • Best Photoshop plug-in or action for converting photos to a spray paint look?

For a project I will be doing, the client will be receiving a bunch of photos from their employees. Traditionally, these photos are not well-composed, high-res, professionally shot images but selfies or other type images they might take with the camera on their phone.
This year, the client has asked me if it would be possible to convert these images into something that looks like it's been painted by a graffiti artist, partly because their theme is somewhat "urban" and partly because I think they think that this would gloss over the bad quality photos. However, they don't want the stencil-outline one or two colour Banksy look kind of thing. As much as I dread saying it, they want something that I can just apply to the photo and convert it to give a uniform look as there may be as many as 300 photos. I have been researching various pieces of software, plug-ins and tutorials but I'm just getting bogged down by it all and to make matters worse, they want to see what it could look like before they will agree to it, so it's not like I can go on a software spending spree. If someone does have a solution that I think works, I will be happy to pay for it -- I'm not looking for a freebie -- but I can't afford/the budget doesn't allow purchasing multiple products for testing purposes. When the photos do come in, there won't be budget or time to painstaking handcraft them all, either. They will not be used in a print application so resolution is not an issue.
Which is why I'm here. I was hoping that someone might have been in a similar situation and has a suggestion. I've already looked at
    http://www.alienskin.com/snapart/snap-art-examples/
    https://www.filterforge.com/
    http://www.misterretro.com/filters/machine-wash-deluxe/texture-samples/all%20effects/Set%2 0One
    http://www.digitalanarchy.com/toonPS/main.html
    http://www.autofx.com/products/automagic-photo-effects-gen1/
But there's so much out there these days it's hard to keep track and Google returns a lot of um... interesting results that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for.
Also, if there is an AfterEffects plug-in that would do it, I'm fine with that too. I haven't looked at the filters I have yet.
    Thanks!

First you need to make sure that the offline files location on client PCs will change location once the new server comes online. This depends on how you push these settings out in the first place, generally it is best to use GPOs to achieve this but you may or may not be doing it this way.
You could cheat and create a CNAME which points the location of the old share to the new, but this is messy and not a great solution.
When it comes to the actually copying files, create a Robocopy script and have it run out of hours, probably over a weekend would be the best time.
Make sure you sure that any scripts/GPO/Applications which point to the old file server are changed to the new location before you go live with the migration.

  • Need help converting photo jpg to a video file.

So I have a 6 minute animation that was sent to me as a series of photo-jpgs. I need to convert them to a video file rather than a huge sequence of stills so I can add some transitions. The images are 1920 by 1080. I don't want to compress them at all until the final render. What sequence settings should I use and how should I export? I know there a billion and two different ways to do this but for some reason I keep screwing it up.
    Jon

As long as the images are sequentially numbered, 001, 002 etc,
    1. open up QT Pro and import as a still image sequence and save is as an animation codec.
    2. create a sequence using the animation codec as the basis, import all the images and drop them into the timeline.
Recognize that the animation codec requires a huge bit of horsepower and disk throughput to edit in real time.
