Converting picture books

Would I be able to easily convert existing self published picture books using iBooks to make app versions? I have a client that I illustrate and design for and have been trying to find a way to convert her books into apps to offer them electronically. This sounds like it might be a perfect solution... IF I can easily import full page artwork. I saw someone post about there not being a 'blank' template so thougt that might be an issue.

Hi wzoe,
You could convert directly to EPUB format from InDesign.
A quick overview of this process: http://robcubbon.com/create-epub-ebook-indesign/
A complete online course: http://www.lynda.com/InDesign-CS5-tutorials/to-EPUB-Kindle-and-iPad/75445-2.html
Remember that the iBooks that IBA produces will only "play" on an iPad.  If your goal is multi-platform then EPUB or PDF is probably the preferred format.
PDF is inherrently fixed layout, but there's a new fixed layout option in EPUB that you should use given these are illustrated books where a fixed page layout is probably important.
Cheers,
Geoff

  • Can I convert a children's picture book to an ebook?

We have a few children's picture books that we want to make into ebooks. The books contain a front jacket, a Page 1 which is a single page, pages 2-31 (spreads), page 32 and a single back. Is there any way to faithfully reproduce these books into an ebook format viewable on tablets, ipods and  ereaders? The primary size of the spread is 10x20 so the single pages are 10x10.

Something rather important - a eBook isn't a the hardcover or paperback vehicle for the content. Don't make the physical constraints of the latter two a determining design factor for your eBook.
A typical eBook can be ePub or PDF (with the PDF processed for viewing via Digital Editions).
There ae others (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_formats). Target one. Then make a study of it. Each will have much related information bob'n about like anchorage floats on the web.
Do some research as to what authoring applications might best serve for digitally re-mastering of the content and then piping it out to the target eBook format.
You've graphics (the illustrative elements). Look over applications that will let you 'work' this content and that can integrate in a manageable way with your selected authoring application.
Adobe's provides various Creative Suites you might look over. Or look over InDesign CS 5.5 and Photoshop elements. Look over Calibre.
Often, you applications' help files can be downloaded or viewed online for a review of what can be done and the process involved.
You might consider a free account at Acrobat.com. This would provide use of the web app "Buzzword". You can build some "trials" containing text and graphics which can be piped out ePub.
Look the ePub over with Calibre or an ePub viewing app on a tablet.
Doing this might help develop a better sense of the basics of digital mastering of content and output to ePub.
As well, do some web searches related to creating/publishing eBooks to see what web services are available.
Make sure you understand the cost/fee parameters of those that may interest you.
    Be well...

  • Copying a page from one picture book into another

Does anyone know how to copy a page from one picture book into another. I have made 2 books and would like to make a third consisting of pages from the first 2 but seem unable to do it without starting again, or at least starting from a duplicate of one and re doing all the missing pages.

print each page you want to include in "book 3" to a PDF and use the send PDF to iPhoto option - this will give you the pages as images in iPhoto that you can them place into "book 3"
See Old Toad's tutorial #19 for more details - http://web.mac.com/toad.hall/OldToadsTutorials/No._19.html - note that it is slightly different - you are only using the beginning part

  • Missing editing toolbar in Iphoto to make a picture book

I'm trying to make an iphoto picture book but I'm missing an editing toolbar so I have no editing options.  When I go to "View" then "Show in Toolbar" - there are no editing options. Can somepone please point me in the right direction?

Where are the editing options missing? When you are browsing your book project, or when you are browsing an event or album?
In a book project, you can activate the editor by ctrl-clicking (or right-clicking) a photo in the book when you are viewing a page, and selecting  "Edit" from the contextual menu.

  • Photo Quality on Picture Book

I am trying to create a picture book in iPhoto using photo's from my son's football team. Some are digital images, but most are scanned pictures. Many of the scanned pictures have warning indicators in the picture book maker that says the printed picture may not be of quality. I would hate to send it off as is and have a poor picture book. I no longer have the pictures to re-scan. Does anyone have any experience with picture books through iPhoto who has dealt with this before?

there is no answer for this? It totally depends on the pixel density of your photos and the size of the frame - the low res indicator comes on at below 180 dpi - a 179 dpi photo will probably still be acceptable - a 18 dpi one will not - it could be anything below 180 dpi
This article is for prints rather than books but it will give you a guide as to minimum photos size - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1135 - or simply multiply the frame size in inches by 180 and that will give you the minimum pixel size for your photo

  • Has anyone created a PICTURE BOOK in iBooks Author?

I am coming up against an issue that I wish I had known about before investing my time in iBooks Author and that is the the apparant inability to create our picture book and not give away the plot of the entire book on the second page in the TOC that shows all the pictures (our pages) for our book. My question is, has anyone been able to eliminate the TOC with the row of pictures at the bottom of the TOC for your picture book and still get your book published? If so, can you tell me your title so I can see it? Thanks!

We are building a video ebook, using text, filmed video clips of the characters, still pics and audio and want to have it released in this IBA format according to what we think is proper as far as presentation is, to our audience. The problem of incorrect formatting for a children's picture book in IBA is very much there. Part of this issue is creative control and the other part is unnecessarily revealing the visual storyline on the first page of the book. Thanks for your input though.
Again, has anyone produced a children's picturebook throuh IBA that has made it through the vetting process, and is for sale in the iBookstore? Would love to see it and how you formatted it and, I  just might be a customer!

  • Converter pictures and videos files to jpg and mpeg

Do you know a safety software o freeware to convert pictures and videos files to jpg and mpeg? to use in my desktop with windows?

A backup stores the data in the location shown in the following link: Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes
Note, however that backup files are stored in a format that is meant for use only in restoring to an iOS device. They are not a way for you to view the photos on the computer.
If you want to save the photos to the computer and be able to view them there, the following has instructions: Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC
You can also use PhotoStream My Photo Stream FAQ or 3rd party apps such as http://www.photosync-app.com

  • How to convert mobi books to ePub format?

Hello, I have a question for help here, I have a lot of .mobi books on my computer, I wanna transfer these mobi books to my iPhone and iPad for reading, but I found they doesn't accept mobi format, I tried many ways to convert mobi to ePub but failed, the quality of  the output ePub file is so bad, unable to read. pleae help! Is there any software can convert hundreds of .mobi files to ePub format with high quality? Don't give me calibre, it keep crashed in my windows 8, and the it is not easy to use, waste of my time.

And, what did I say?  Asnlinkda asked how to convert a mobi book into an epub book (not how to convert an epub in a mobi). I said him that he should use some thid party app (that produces epub books) and if it's necessary, to polish the resulting book mobi to ePub converter. I also say that he could use mobi to ePub converter but that I prefer to use the first method. So, I say that is preferable to use (if it were necessary)
The way I go from Mobi > ePub is to use Vibosoft ePub creator or iStonsoft mobi to epub converter to convert, use Modify ePub to put in the cover and then use Sigil to rename the files and clean up the code/CSS. I find that's the easiest way to do it.

  • IPhoto Picture Book larger than 28 x22cm - how do I specify?

A few years ago, I made an iPhoto book using the Picture Book theme that was larger than 28x22cm. Now, when I try to order a book, I am only able to choose within the Picture Book theme from the hard, soft and wire bound options, and I don't have any ability to change the size of the book. I'm ordering from NZ.
Does anyone know whether there is any way to buy a larger book using Picture Book? Does another theme give you that option?
    Thanks so much!

Only the softcover books come in Medium:

  • Converting pictures into PDF files

How do I convert pictures into PDF files, is this possible?

If you want to use acrobat reader, you have to pay for it.
So, I use other free or cheap apps to do so =>
    * powerpdf
    * dragonprinter (draakprinter in dutch)
    * writepdf
    * scanapp (to convert parts of a picture)
I even think that almost every scan-app can convert pictures into pdf's.

  • Picture Book Customization

This is my first time putting together a picture book, so far the IPHoto application is great, however I was wondering, is there a reason why the customizations or restricted?
I seen a couple of layouts in different themes of picture books, why must I choose from a particular theme?
Why not make the books fully customizable.
I must admit im use to the flexibilty, & useability that are usually associated with Windows Applications. I got so excited comming down this road, only to be let down....
It would be so worth it!
Is there anyone else out there that allows a fully customizable Photo book?
if so please let me know. I can save my money!

    David:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It appears that Apple has left complete customization to the new application, Aperture. iPhoto users are limited to what themes and layouts are included with iPhoto. You can go online to sites like Ofoto, SharedInk or Shutterfly to see if they allow total customization.
There's also a professional site that let the user layout the pages in Photoshop but their prices are about 4-5 times that of Apple.

  • Is it possible to get a black background when using Picture Book layout in iphoto?

I want to customize the layouts more in iphoto--either be able to use a black background when using the Picture Book layout, or have more layout options in the Photo Essay layout.  Are either of these possible?
    Thanks!

    Yes.

  • Small Picture Book Cover Text Bug?

I've just ordered 2 * 3 small picture books. On making a PDF copy to email, I noticed that the cover text was bleeding into the photo above it. That is to say it's about 2 cm higher than it should be and is escaping the black background it should be resting on.
I was using a French word with accents so I thought it might be the cause. Retyped a new title in English: same thing. Changing the theme to Medium Sized Picture Book resolves the issue. But if I change it back to Small, the glitch reappears. I've made a new Small Picture Book from different photos and the problem persists.
I've even managed to locate the pdf created when ordering and can confirm that it is wrong too.
So. Anyone else been through this? Unless a miracle occurs it looks like I'll have to go through the hassle of sending back two orders and waiting until they fix it...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The small books only have an introduction page for text but it can be inserted anywhere in the book. It's listed under the Layouts menu at the bottom.

  • Portrait oriented images in Picture Book theme

I am starting to put together my first trial book and so far haven't found a way to insert a portrait image into the (landscape) Picture Book layout.
Is the only possible method to create a new landscape image in Photoshop with a portrait image within it. Or is there a more straightforward method?
    Many thanks
    Richard Lewisohn

Jerome, I think I've worked this out now. Previously I had tried to double click an image in the book layout but the handles to drag the image to a different aspect ration hadn't appeared. Also the 'Photo Box Aspect Ratio' buttons were grayed out.
Anyway, now the handles have some appeared!
Next of all I'll investigate proofing with your suggested profile.
    Kind regards
    Richard
