Converting png to vector

I have Freehand 10 and have always had a hek of a time trying
to figure this program out, I love fireworks, but am really
learning to hate freehand. Anyway, now that I've vented, can
somebody tell me if it's possible to convert a bitmap image (in my
case a png file) to a vector image. I've blacked out the bitmap and
am trying to convert it for use now to a vector. I appreciate any
help before I go crazy.

No, you can't convert but you can trace.
Tracing means that the program reads outlines from an image
and makes the paths accordingly. The result depends on the quality
of the image. Small low res web graphics cannot be traced very well
because tracing do not have any intelligence whatsoever. Even with
very good images there is a lot of cleaning to do, especially if
there must be vertical and horizontal lines, sharp angles, circles
etc.
If the image is very simple it is best to put the image to
the background layer and remake it from scratch with drawing tools.
FreeHand, Yes. Import the image into FreeHand and marquee
select the area you want to trace with the trace tool. (The magic
wand icon in the toolbar.) Double click gives the settings. Getting
a good result usually requires fair amount of trial and error.
Sometimes combining parts of several traces work best.

  • How to convert PNG image to Vertor Image to make font on Mac

    Hi Mac People,
I like to create a set of font, and I have made them in a image editing tool, I have FontForge downloaded but decide to use it to convert instead direct design them inside.
So now I don't know how to convert the PNG image to vector image required by the FontForge, I read some post mentioned Ubuntu has utilities to convert, but I'm not sure OS X has that function too.
Could anyone let me know how to convert PNG so I can create my fonts?
If PNG can't, the software can export TIFF or jpeg or similar.
Please help me, I need make them this few day.
Thanks everyone for giving me a hand!

  • Problems converting PNG image to SVG with autotrace

    Hi,
I am trying to convert a large number of color PNG images of hieroglyphs (produced after much effort) to SVG format, using "autotrace -background-color ffffff -output-format svg".
It seems that where there are closed paths with background color inside, autotrace produces an SVG image with the background area in black instead of transparency. (You can see the images at http://5b4az.chronos.org.uk/pkg/hieroglyph/A001.png and http://5b4az.chronos.org.uk/pkg/hieroglyph/A001.svg although the svg image is not rendered by Firefox). You may also download the tarballs with all the hieroglyphs of the Gardiner set if you are interested.
After all the effort that went into these images, I am stuck with being unable to convert raster images to vector graphics. I did try autotrace before I put in all this effort, but I didn't notice the problem because apparently I tried it on images with no enclosed background color.....
    Any suggestions wellcome greatefully!

I know this is an old thread, but I did some new testing on some line art and want to post my results.
I started with a PNG, and converted it to PBM and PGM. I got much better quality doing this conversion with GIMP, as opposed to pngtopnm.
I traced both formats with autotrace and potrace, which I output to SVG.
Autotrace accepts PNG, so I did the trace with the original as well.
I got the highest quality with PGM and potrace.  It also was the smallest file size.
a close second was PBM with potrace, slightly larger.
third was autotrace and the PBM, larger still.
Using the PGM with autotrace was unacceptable, and the file size was HUGE!
So if black/white is OK: Convert PNG to PGM with GIMP, then potrace
both the best quality, and smallest size SVG.  This is assuming you started with anti-aliased black/white line-art, i guess the full greyscale PGM avoids the aliasing of PBM.
It seems autotrace is the way to go, if your forced to deal with multiple colors.
I suspect you will need to do many passes and really tweak those command options,
The PNG directly to autotrace was a complete disaster, but i suspect it would improve given enough time to configure command arguments.
However, even with those perfect options I would believe potrace yields a cleaner trace.

Thanks. I might use it soon...
Does it automatically make folders named after the volume labels? And does it handle the conversion of spaces and non-alphanumeric characters to octal codes?
I could read the script but it would be faster for everyone reading, if you leave the answer as a reply.
I also think that there should be some major work done on modernizing the fstab, either by replacing it with a better implementation of file system mounting or changing the file structure and adding in better handling of non-alphanumerics. I don't want to have to look up a stupid octal table every time I type in my labels.

  • Batch convert png to jpeg with custom background

How to batch convert pngs to jpegs, but using custom background ? Is there any action or plugin for that ?

Image Processor in conjunction with an Action (that places and positions a background for example) should suffice.

  • Anything out there to batch convert png to svg

    Hi there
I really like the move towards SVG but the thought of running each and every icon through a program is daunting - is there any program out there that would bath convert PNG files to SVG while retaining their dimensions - i guess there probably isn't but it doesn't harm to ask.
    Cheers

I'm sure there is other software for what you are looking for. This is the reason I asked what is your current device so I can see what I can find out for you. I did a google seach and found this results

This might not be exactly what you wanted but there is software still out there for it.

  • Is all adobe illustrator art work in vector art or do you have to convert them to vector?

I created a logo through Adobe illustrator and thought it would automatically be in Vector Art. When I sent the logo to a sign company they said it was pixelated, not Vector. Is it because I converted it into a pdf file before I sent it? And is there some way to get it into Vector Art so I can put it on a sign and it not be blurry?

It is a very basic logo where I used the polygon tool and filled it in red. I then put the Avant Garde decorative border around the shape and filled it in with a darker red. Then I put two letters in the center using the type tool in the font "French Script MT" and turned them white. All of this I made from a new folder under the "print" profile. I saved it as Adobe pdf. and Adobe svg. Unfortunatly, I don't know what step I can take to make all of this vector art. If you know how to help, thanks!

  • Short cut for converting pngs with reflection to jpg?

After reading the posts about huge image sizes, I tried the suggestion about turning off effects. But I found I liked the little reflection bit at the bottom of my images. So I left in the effect and published my site to get the swoopty png files with alpha and reflection.
I then loaded the png files up into GraphicConverter, and used that to generate a jpeg. GraphicConverter wanted to know what to do with the alpha channel, so I experimented and found flattening it did what I wanted.
Finally I turned off reflections on my images, added the new much smaller jpg to my pages, resized and repositioned the graphics. And now I have something that looks to me just like what I started with only with smaller page sizes.
So.... The Question ... Does anybody know a simpler way to get this same result? I don't want to do this every time I add a picture to my iWeb built website.

    Chris...
You are discovering the many workarounds that iWeb forces us to do in order to maintain control over visibility in IE and file sizes! Here is what I generally do when I want to apply image effects like rotation, drop shadows, frames, reflections....and I DON'T want iWeb to convert my small JPG into a big PNG...
I basically arrange the elements of my page to my liking...say it's a series of 3 images in an arrangement and I apply frames and a reflection to it. If I just publish, iWeb will convert my 3 little jpgs into 3 big(ger) PNGs just because of the effects. Instead, what I do is I take a screenshot of the 3 image group once I am happy with the final arrangement using Apple-shift-4. I run the resulting PNG "Picture 1" through my favorite program "Downsize" in order to convert back to JPG, and the result is a nice small jpg with all the effects that I applied! I then delete the 3 elements in iWeb and drop this one little jpg in and voila! That's it! Sometimes I do this with entire pages and really get fast loading pages that also look good in IE.
If you have found any of this information to be useful to you, please take the time to provide me with feedback by marking my reply as "solved" or "helpful" using those little buttons that you see in the title bar of this reply. I'd really appreciate it!

  • Converting PNG images to Jpeg

I am operating with iPhoto 6.0.6 and have a lot of recent wedding photos that were sent to me in PNG format. How do I convert these images to jpeg? I've found lots of shareware for conversion but nothing that will run on a mac.

Is there any reason to convert them? PNG is just as portable as JPEG.
You can export png from iPhoto and choose JPEG as the destination format using the File -> Export command.

  • Converting Selection to Vector (image)

I have a logo that I created for test purposes at a lower resolution. Is it possible to take the active selection of the logo and create a vector from it without having to manually trace over it with the pen tool or adobe illustrator (I do not own illustrator). If I could do this within photoshop that would be my preference.
    Thanks

    @Conroy
Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and traced the major portion I need. Now that its traced, how do I convert it to a selection and fill it solid black as a vector graphic? Thanks

  • Turn png into vector

I'm very new to illustrator and have been trying to turn a logo (png file) into a vector.  The logo is white lettering with a transparent background and I cannot get the logo to show up properly so that I can work with it.  When I try to open the logo in AI it shows up behind the artboard - and if I try to click on "image trace" the logo gets covered by the white box and I can't see anything.
    Your help would be appreciated!!

This is helpful. Your PNG is transparent and the pixels are white. You can either open the PNG in Photoshop and change the pixels to black or place a black object behind the PNG in Illustrator so you can see it. You could also turn on the "Transparency Grid", but it won't be easy to trace something while the grid is on. You can also resize the page size so it fits the logo.
The PNG will open in PS as a transparent layer. To change it to black, first lock the layer transparency then fill the layer with black. You can then "Save As" and use it to trace or auto-trace in AI.

  • Converting CS3 to Vector art

    Hi Folks
I'm new at working with Photoshop CS3 but need some advise in creating Vector art that can be imported into CorelDRAW and manipulated.
I am importing part schematics (part diagrams) for a motor utilizing my scanner. Once imported I am erasing the background to make them transparent and saving them. This has been working fine but does not allow me to position the artwork at my discretion.
I need to be able to create the work, make them transparent and save them as vector art so I can import them into CorelDRAW and be able to move parts around.
Can anyone give me some advise
    Thanks for you help
    Michael

Photoshop is not a vector art program, it creates rasterized images.  Illustrator is the appropriate tool for vector art work.
