Converting purchased itunes files that are protected to MP3

Is there any way to convert a purchased song that is protected from a MP4 to a MP3? I am trying to create a DVD with music, but it does not support MP4 format.

Burn the purchased track(s) to Audio CD in iTunes then import them back as MP3.

itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?
new to itunes, used windows media player before that and always ripped music directly to an external hardrive and accessed it through the player. now that i downloaded itunes it is taking from the external hardrive and copying a second file for each song onto my lap top hard drive which does not have the capacity for all my music. as itunes converts music files i want them saved back onto my external drive or another location i have space for rather than the lap top. how do i change the setting to move the itunes media folder to another location. assuming that hitting copy and past and dropping it in a random location will cause a few errors.

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

are you saying that your computer is autharized from guessing, or do you know it is becuase it says it. in itunes, go to the advanced tab and the last option in that tab should be either aurhorize, or de-authorize.  What does it say?

It means that nano was used on a third-party software or synced from different computer to sync music. Does that nano show in iTunes? If yes, then restore completely. If not, then you may need to head to Apple Store and see what they can do.

  • HT1550 Can i Convert my files that are F00...F49

Can I convert my files that are F00...F49  to look like the rest of my file (had a computer crash,,,use ipod to get my music back in itunes)
Some file are song titles/albums ect     others are F00..F49
they appear  this way in my backup files

F00..F49 are the names of the folders of media content on the iPod. Inside will be a bunch of files with four letter names. As long as they're not .wav files it should be possible to recover them and reconstruct the core of the library from the embedded tags.
See the iLounge link near the bottom of Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

Whenever I try and eject my iPod from iTunes after it is done syncing a box pops us that says "The iPods' 'Owners iPod' cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application".iTunes is the only thing open on my computer so I don't understand what this could mean.  If anybody could help me out that would be great. Thanks

    Hello, cgtyoder.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try resetting the iPod and power cycling your Mac to see if this message disappears.  If the issue persists you may need to restore the device to factory settings.  The article below will walk you through both these steps.

As I said - look whether your original file is damaged or not. If not, I wouldn't change it and find out what in your system makes it sound like it's clipping.
Good sound file, with volume maxed out. No need to change anything.
The same song clipped - no chance to repair.

  • I just bot a new ipodnano and synched my playlists from my itunes library.  However, I am unable to disconnect as it says the the ipodnano contains files that are in use by "another application".  What is it talking about and how do I disconnect?

How do I disconnect./eject my new ipodnano after I had synched my playlists (from itunes library on my computer).
Itunes message - CANNOT BE EJECTED BECAUSE IT CONTAINS FILES THAT ARE IN USE BY ANOTHER APPLICATION:.
This is after my synch was succesfull and it says I can disconnect now - but it won't let me.

For the immediately problem, you can shut down the computer and disconnect the iPod.
There may be a process (program) running on your computer in the background that continuously monitors mounted volumes for things like maintenance, data corruption, and malware.  The iPod's storage is a mounted volume.  If you know of any such program, such as an "anti-virus" utility, and it has settings that allow you to exclude certain volumes, you can set it to ignore the iPod "disk" when connected.
Also, if you are using automatic syncing (not the manual method) to load the iPod, and you have Enable disk use turned ON, turn it OFF.  With Enable disk use turned OFF, iTunes only mounts the iPods disk when syncing, then immediately unmounts the disk.  Thus, other processes you have running on your PC (not iTunes) will have less of a chance to make the disk "in use" and cause this problem.  You won't even have to eject the iPod before disconnecting.

  • I am not able to Sync. My iPOD classic 80Gb. It tells that as iTunes can not read the contents-restore to factory settings- after restoring – it tells that it can not be restore bcause there are files that are used by other application. I am having Widows

I am not able to Sync. My iPOD classic 80Gb. It tells that as iTunes can not read the contents-restore to factory settings- after restoring – it tells that it can not be restored bcause there are files that are used by other application. My iPOD appears in My Computer in drive H as a mass storage generick volume

Try disabilng the Enable Disk Use option from under the iPod's Summary tab, applying the changes, and seeing if that helps.
Otherwise, temporarily disabling any antivirus, security, firewall, or file indexing software that may be running on your system and then try restoring your iPod again.

  • How do I point to the iTunes file that lists purchase history?

My iTunes library got messed up and I've been able to point back to most of my settings but do I point to the iTunes file that lists purchase history? Perhaps I'm pointing to an old iTunes library by mistake?

also, you could use this script: _*Track Down Purchases*_.
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track. Just sayin'.

  • On Windows 7, neither my quicktime or iTunes will start. This started after I installed the newest update. All the files that are needed are there. I recently updated Quicktime to see if that would work, but it didn't.

  • Why doesn't my pdf files that are on my iPad show up on my iMac or mac book pro

Why doesn't my pdf files that are on my ipad show up on my imac or macbook?

Have you copied them from your iPad ? If you are using the 'sync collections' setting then that doesn't copy items between devices/computers, all it does is if you move a book/PDF into a collection on one device/computer then if that book/PDF is also on your other device(s)/computer(s) then it will be moved into the same collection on them.
If you connect the iPad to the computer that you sync it to and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases then it should copy them over to your Mac's iTunes (that should copy PDFs and epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks) - in the iBooks app on your Mac you might then need to do File > Move Books From iTunes to move them over to it.

  • IPod contains files that are in use by another application

If you have ever received a message from iTunes saying that, "iTunes cannot update iPod because it contains files that are in use by another application," then take a look at this thread because I have had many problems with this and discovered a solution that most likely will work. Ok, lets begin:
    1. Updating/Restoring does not work. If you have this problem and get the above message continue reading.
    2. Plug your iPod into your USB port. Allow iTunes to load and recognize the iPod. It shall update itself automatically.
    3. When iTunes is finished, go to the "Start Menu."
    4. Open "My Computer"
    5. On the main screen, scroll to "Devices with Removable Storage." Click on your iPod.
    6. After clicking on the iPod, go to the left-side bar and under "System Tasks," click "Eject this disk."
    7. Once this is done, return to iTunes and click "Update."
    8. It should come up with a message saying something like, "Updating (Name of iPod) iPod."
Congratulations, you have just solved your problem! Good luck enjoying the wonderful updates that iTunes has to offer.

P.S. Let me know if there is anything I can imporve on, I'm sort of new to this, but love messing with the computer. Thank You!

I am experiencing the same message when I try and sync either my or my wife's iPod on my Mac. I simply acknowledge it and everything seems to work fine but I wonder what's going on. I used to have problems dismounting my iPod but that seems to have gone away with iTunes 7.
Any thoughts for us Mac guys?

  • Purchased iTunes files?

I am really considering to purchase finalcut pro but on my friend's mac, it doesn't seem to play the purchased itunes files. It gives this beep and when the file is rendered, it has no sound. Is this a copyprotection feature or is there another way? I remember Steve Jobs mentioning once that it is compatible with iTunes. Anybody? If i paid for all these songs, i should be able to use them for my own videos.

Uh oh..this can of worms again.
iTunes purchased music contains Digital Rights Management that prevents its use with professional applications. However, music purchased with iTunes does work with iMovie. The reason? iMovie is for the hobbyist and music over home movies is considered "fine."
But Final Cut Pro is a professional application and iTunes music will not work in this application. There are "sync rights" that come with putting music to professional video.
You may be editing a home project, but that doesn't change the fact that it won't work. Apple assumes (rightly so) that iMovie will be used by hobbyists for home movies, and that FCP will be used by professionals for produced works. Thus they prevent iTunes purchased music from working in it.
Lets not get into the "but I paid for it therefore I can use it" arguement. Search "itunes" in this forum and you will find LONG threads arguing several points.
But please, lets not open another flame fest on this topic.
