Converting QT to WMV files for PowerPoint presentation on PC

Hi All,
I have a client on a tight budget who wants to incorporate some talking heads into their Powerpoint presentation on their PC. I did a test with a full resolution Quicktime file but they could not play it.
My plan is to export as a Windows Media Player file but I'm not sure if there are any settings that I should be aware of before I deliver.
I am editing in DV 720 x 480. Can I keep this file size and just export at full quality?
I have both VisualHub and Flip4Mac software.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks for the reminder on the size, Jim.
quick question. I've done a test using the Flip4Mac preset - One pass VBR, Presentation (high) and the clips play fine of their PC. The client is happy, But, and this is a big but for me.... I can see some green leaking through around the heads. I have worked very hard on the key using the DVGarage plug-in and it's clean on my computer.
Is something happening during the conversion to wmv? The bitrate on the presentation preset is only 80 with a peak bit rate of 160, a far cry from the 1600k cbr that you suggested. I need to deliver today and I'm not sure if I should be experimenting too much at this stage, but, on the other hand, they will be using a projector.
I could really use some advice.
Cheers,
Chris

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

How to import WMV file for use in adobe programs, especially After Effects and/or Premier?

I have the latest adobe creative cloud and i'm using Mac 10.8.2
My client gave me a wmv file that she wants some people blurred out in the background but when I go to import the media, it's greyed out. I'm assuming that After Effects will be the best solution for this, but maybe there is another way.
I can purchase a video converter and convert it to .mov but that costs extra money that I don't want to spend just to do this one project.

  • Converting M-peg 2 files for use in i-movie

What is the best (easiest and cheapest) to use programme when trying to convert M-peg 2 files for use in i-movie? I have just bought my i-mac and was assured by seller in Apple store that it would be 'really easy' to upload files from existing camcorder. How wrong he was!
    Help appreciated. Thanks.

Never had to do this myself. However, if your Windows PC and the Mac have the same version of PM such as PM7.xx, then you should be okay. You'll need to sort out your fonts though as I think the Mac can open PC TrueType founts but Windows cannot handle Mac TrueType. OpenType are cross platform. Hope this helps.

  • Importing/converting DVD to .mov file for FCP

I had a friend give me a homemade DVD that I want to import/convert into a .mov file for editing in FCP. I've read the threads on MPEG Streamclip, but it asks to select the file(s) to import (vs one file). Not sure if I'm on the right track.
Here's what I see on the DVD:
    http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s63/jtnacc/ishot-4.jpg
    Any help would be appreciated.
    John

Hi Piero... Congrats man... your explanation is the best simple explanation of getting material off a DVD into a form where it can be editied in FCP.
Just to make it clear to anyone else...
1- go to http://www.squared5.com/ and download the FREE program MPEG STREAMCLIP.
Install it in your applications folder. Start Mpeg Streamclip, and insert the DVD into your drive.
2- Go to FILE > OPEN and use that to navigate to the DVD, look in the video_ts file and select the first .vob file of a series, e.g. VTS010.VOB; you'll be asked if you want to open all files of that stream, and you answer yes. You'd better also apply the command Edit/Remove Timecode Breaks before exporting.
This takes a minute or three depending on how much material ois on the DVD.
3 - Now go to the Mpeg Streamclip command line and select **Export to QuickTime** (NOT Export to DV)
    Use these settings :
    Compression: Apple DV-PAL (DV-PAL for UK/Europe, or Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), Quality: 100%,
fps: 25 for PAL or 29,97 for NTSC,
    Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
    AND hit go !
Mpeg Streamclip will promt you to name the new file name and a location for saving.
This can take a minute for every minute of material.. so is a slow process.
I decided to use the "in" and "out" markers on Mpeg Streamclip to define smaller chunks of the DVD to convert at a time... rather than risk it running for 40 minutes and crashing (which it did first time). If you're ripping the DVD for editing purposes then this should not cause any problems.
Once it's finished, go to the save location, and you should see a Quicktime movie with the name you gave it.
You can now go into FCP and IMPORT this Qtime move and edit it.
    MARVELOUS
Thanks again Piero - this has really helped me

  • Converting wmv files for ipod

I have a couple of wmv files that I would like to put on my ipod. I upgraded to QT Pro and chose export then chose movie-ipod. I get the video to play after the conversion but there's a watermark that says something about created with flip 4 mac trial version. I thought I created it with QT Pro?!?! Please don't tell me I have to buy the flip 4 mac pro version and that I wasted $30 on the QT Pro! Or am I (hopefully) doing something wrong or do I need to change a setting somewhere? Thanks so much!!
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   IPod Video 30G

I thought I created it with QT Pro?Wrong. If you want to import a WMV file and convert it to QT, you need the $29 Flip4Mac (Windows Media proprietary) codec. (And if you want to export QT files to the WMV format it will cost you another $20 for the proprietary export codec.) Same holds true for DivX v6.5 if you want that proprietary codec too. Also be advised that the Flip4Mac components only support WMV v9 and not the MS/WMA/WMA2 audio formats found in v9.2, 10, and 11 (which seem to be in popular use with DivX video in AVI containers of late. So, if you plan to use a lot of media created on Windows machines, be prepared to install a number of components (some of which will not be free) and have a lot of disappointments when you come across compression formats that have never been ported for use on a Mac, only work in OS 9, and/or are not available in universal binary format if needed.

  • Converting wmv files for use in imovie 9 for users who have pc

To convert wmv files use your pc windows movie maker. (if you have one) On your pc, open windows movie maker, get collections and get your wmv project/video, drag it into the timeline, and then save in your computer, save it as an avi file and rename it. After send file to your memory card reader, that way you can transfer that file onto your mac!! And voila! I tried to email it but file became too large so transfering it to a memory card is the easiest. This took me days to figure out, I hope I have helped someone out there.....

I don't want to use DV because these .m2t files are from an HDV camcorder and I want to preserve the aspect ratio and resolution in the files. What other "flavor" of HD would you suggest that I convert them to since (a) I can't bring the files into FCP6 or Compressor (b) I don't see any other flavors of HD to use in VisualHub.
The whole business of converting .m2t files to a FCP6 compatible format, i.e. a Quicktime format, would seem to be one that is commonly encountered, and yet I have never found a thread on this forum that really answers this question: What is the best workflow for converting .m2t files for use in FCP? Surely, one of the pros who frequent this forum must have dealt with this issue and have an answer.
I don't want to have to recapture the files from tape all over again just to use them in FCP6.

  • Compressor-creating files for powerpoint

I have been having a tough time getting compressor (2) to give me full size good-looking output clips that are readable and importable (not just as a hyperlink) by PowerPoint on a pc.
Does anyone have any favorite settings? The clips I am using are no longer that 8 min and need to fit onto a cd. So far I have tried MPEG4 (unreadable), H.264 (unreadable), MPEG1 (to small), and MPEG2. I think the MPEG 2 will play nicely with Powerpoint, but when I try exporting a trial clip they either have no audio, or they appear on my desktop as a blank page and cannot be opened by anything!
I am using a G4 desktop with final cut pro 5 and compressor 2. I also have just downloaded Streamclip if that is at all relevant.
    Anyone got any ideas?

The issue here is the PC setup and version of Powerpoint.
I recently had exactly the same dilemma. The very latest Powerpoint will call Quicktime if you insert a quicktime movie and it's possible to download a public beta of the latest Quicktime for Windows which has H264 support.
Unfortunately the most 'universal' setting will however be a WMV file in the Windows Media 9 Professional setting at 640 X 480 pixels. It's easier to produce this on a PC.
    Not great quality but passable.
Not a patch on H264 through Powerpoint on a mac.

  • WMV files in powerpoint on a mac

    New to macs
How can I load WMV files into a powerpoint presentation. My new IMAC won't let me put them into a presentation to be played later on a PC

Do you have Flip4mac installed? OSX and Quicktime cannot play them without this component. You do not need and should not have the crummy, dated, non working MS WMP application on your mac at all, despite the misguided advice.

  • Convert & burn .avi & .wmv files to DVD?

As a relative Mac newbie, I would like to know how to convert .avi & .wmv files that are on my hard drive to DVD-burnable format. I generally use Toast Titanium 6.0.7 for all disc burning. An acquaintance suggested that I use iMovie for this purpose, but -- excuse my ignorance -- how exactly and in a simple way do I do it (go from having .avi and/or .wmv files on my hard drive to being able to actually and successfully burn them to DVD)?
Trying to add the files to Toast's "DVD Video" pre-DVD-burn setting just brings up black screen stills to represent the file, leading me to believe there is a problem, because other video files I've burned in the past have loaded into Toast with a video still frame grab before burning.
Windows seems to be able to perform this function easily, but could anyone help with simple, direct info on how to do it with Mac Tiger?..
Is this all a codec issue? If so, why should it be (on an otherwise tech-savvy and adaptable Apple OS) and how do I rectify it in a straightforward and simple manner?
I should add that I can view .avi files on my Mac by using VLC Media Player, and the .wmv files by using Windows Media Player for Mac, but I want to be able to convert these files to DVD-burnable format, so I can view them on a television set-top DVD player...
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Here's a couple more suggestions that I use .Not so elegent but they work.
    1. I use a VGA to TV converter box which plugs in to the VGA connection on the computer & gives S video or composite out & then plugin to the dv in from the camera. Then import to imovie for any editing & then burn away !Quick & dirty & it works eveytime. Of course you must have a vga connection at the back of your computer.
    2. On the PC side I use Cyberlink Power Director. This accepts .wmv files & will convert to other formats & also send to mini dv camera tape if I want to burn to standalone DVD burner.

  • Converting Samsung vp-hmx20c files for final cut pro

    Hey
Ive got a samsung vp-hmx20c hd video camera and have recorded files in 1080/25p and 1080/50i.
Im trying to convert them for editing in FCP but everytime i convert to something different playback is flickery and lags in both FCP and quicktime.
Im using a Macbook pro intel core duo 2.2ghz with 2gb ram.
Just wanting to know what the best way to convert the files and what i should be converting them to?
    Files info from Quicktime is
    Format: H.264, 1920 x 1080, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 50
    Data Rate: 14.54 Mbit/s
    Current Size: 1440 x 810 pixels
    Cheers

    Use ProRes 422.
Is there any benefit of compressor or streamclip?
MPEG Streamclip is possibly a little less complicated to set up than Compressor.
I have a tutorial for it [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]. Just substitute ProRes instead of the DV codec in the article.

  • Scaling image files for Slide presentation in Keynote

I have had great problems importing and scaling images for Keynote presentations with approx 500+ images. Having tried to adjust the image to fit the full screen the scaling results in unacceptable pixelation. I seem to have solved this now by batch processing my image files and saving them as PDF files. These are then imported from the Aperture Library as iPhoto wont recognise the PDF file format!
It's a pity that Keynote has so many restrictions for use in Slide/music presentations, having seen incredible professional results with Pic2exe (which unfortunately at present is not available in Mac format - tho the Win exe file will run I am told).

Please tell us what you are really trying to do!!
You know like dumb stuff like where are the images from? What's their resolution? If you';re using Aperture you can't be a newbie.
You can achieve incredible professional results in Keynote, but you need to know how it wants to work.

No. The project files are not cross-platform.

  • Converting sequence or QT file for Web use

I have a short 13-minute sequence that I need to convert to a QT file in order to then convert to flash for posting to our Web site. I've done this multiple times today with no luck in reducing the file size. By exporting using Quick Time Conversion, using my default settings for compression (H.264) type, the file size of the final .mov file was 200-some MB. After changing my settings to a lower quality final product, I now have a file .mov that is 2GB!?
I have several files that I'll need to convert QT files for posting to the Web. The lengths range from 5 minutes to an hour.
Can anyone give me any kind of advice on the best way to convert to a QT file resulting in a smaller file size? If I am making something very simple, very difficult, please lend your thoughts!

    Hi there,
FCP may estimate unusual time remaining but usually that estimate is not accurate. When I export to H.264 very often it appears that FCP hangs on 7% but thing is it eventually will encode within 15 minutes. Circumstances change from case to case (machine specs, length of movie, export settings).
Set an IN and OUT on a portion of your timeline and export again to test quality and the time your machine require to encode.

  • CS3 PS PDF files for PDF Presentation . . . help!!!!

I have made PDF presentation in previous versions of PS through automate or using Bridge. I used both jpeg and PS generated PDF files to create the presentation and never had a problem. I used the same file size and format to create a new presentation (section and title sheets with type) and could not get the pdf to view to be crisp and clear. I remade the base psd file to be twice the size, created PS PDFs and Bridge says it can't utilize the files. I've tried everything!! Does anybody know what the best format is for a PS based doc to be made into pdfs for a presentation????
