Converting Super8 Movies to .avi and xfr to my Mac via a 16 Gb Flash memory

I want to use a commercial service to convert some old Super8 movies to both a playable DVD as well as .avi files that I can Edit.
To start, I have a 30-min film on a 7-inch Super 8 reel but am told I may need as much as 8Gb for the entire thing to be converted into avi file(s) in order to transfer to my Mac. That could be done using maybe a 16Gb USB flash drive which I don't yet have. I do have a 2 Gb one.
_Questions_: 1) Is 16 Gb a good choice and are there some models (SanDisk, Sony MemSticks, Kingston, etc.) that only will take peecee files? I would like one that can read both formats OSX10.5 as well as XP.
2) Also, do the 16Gb sizes need to be formatted first? What about SW Drivers?
3) Are there any web sites that provide info on this subject so I can get smarter?

I need to learn from some websites or sources the differences between .DV and .AVI formats, advantages, disadvantages, etc.
DV is a relatively "lightly" compressed compression format used for editing. AVI is a file type in which the audio and video content are spatially synchronized like the cogs of a watch. Depending on the compression format used, it may by highly compressed or not. It is normally used as a container for the delivery and distribution of media content -- not its editing. It is so old that its originator discontinued support more than a decade ago but is in such wide use that its PC users will not let it die a dignified death. Some codecs used in it were never converted for use on the Mac platform while others may only work under OS 9. And, even if they work under OS 10, the may not have been transcoded for for Intel based platforms. Probably the most often variation currently seen on the Mac is DivX/MP3 which cannot be edited natively which means it will have to be transcoded/re-rendered for use at some point in the editing process on a Mac.

Well, turbo.264 is indeed very nice to have - even for converting full-sized movies. (Nevertheless, TechRadar's latest roundup (see http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/6-of-the-best-video-converte rs-for-mac-1074303 ; also linked from another roundup at http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps ) has shown it's still worse than HandBrake in most respects.)
All H.264 files (assuming they are H.264 level 4.1 or lower) are compatible with the built-in Videos app.

It entirely depends on your needs. The top players (AVPlayerHD / ProPlayer, It's Playing, GoodPlayer) all have different strengths and weaknesses. I myself use It's Playing the most as I convert everything into MP4 and simply love the DSP's (brightness / volume / saturation boosting). (Its software decoders are definitely worse than those of AVPlayerHD / ProPlayer; however, MP4's are played back from hardware.)

The phone. Don't use the phone to change the wrapper. Use a converter or better yet, use a video camera. Use a phone to make calls.

Depends on whether or not the codecs cotained in the AVI or MKV files (AVI and MKV are only file containers—not compression formats) are supported by the DivX installation or your Mac component configuration.

The Perian package still works under Mountain Lion but some codec components may only be available via the older QT 7 player app. However, DivX codecs may or may not have conflict problems with the Perian components.

Again, this would depend on the specific codecs used in the AVI or MKV file containers. Basically if the content is compatible with the formats supported by FFmpegX software, then they will be supported by HandBrake. As to loss of quality, the depends on the quality you start with in the source file, the specific settings used for the conversion, and the target display dimensions of your conversion. In some cases where the source data is already compressed as MPEG-4 or MPEG-4/AVC content, the data can the resaved to MOV, MP4, and/or M4V file containers withould having to transcode any data.
Does an App exist on the Mac App Store that can play AVI and MKV files?
Basically, any App Store application that can convert AVI or MKV files using its own internal codec support and has a built in player module should be able to play such files. And more are available online besides those in the App Store.

There are now a bunch of them out there. Do a Google search for "mac 3D conversion" They tend to be around $35. I have been using iSkysoft products, which have been fairly easy to use. They have a "iMedia Converter Deluxe for Mac" that besides the 3D to 2D conversion, will also convert video to 70+ formats, has a 1-Click Video Downloader, and a single click Rip DVD and Burn to DVDs feature. Also claims to be "Ultrafast" all for the same price others apps are that only do the conversion.

Applications for your Mac are coded for the operating system on the Mac which is OS X.
Applications for the iPad must be coded for the operating system on the iPad which is iOS.
Hence the applications for the Mac will not work on the iPad.

What is a good video converter - from .mov to .avi

I've tried researching this topic and I've seen a lot of partially helpful info. I'll try to be specific. I'm using a MBP with OS X, and iMovie '09 (version 8.0.6). I'm trying to convert my edited .mov files to either .avi or .wmv files so i can embed them into a powerpoint presentation for PC. I am not trying to rip DVDs. These are interview I filmed myself. I need a decent (free or inexpensive) converter to do this. I have tried Handbrake and i only get .mp4 as an format option. I've also tried MPEG StreamClip but when it converts there is no audio. I don't mind paying a few bucks to have a good converter, but i want one that will do the job. Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated!

For .wmv, you can use Flip4Mac. http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm
A potentially free solution is to use regular iMovie h.264 files (.m4v) and be sure to install QuickTime for Windows on the Windows PC.
If you need to distribute the PPT to multiple PCs, I would go for Flip4Mac.
To the best of my knowledge, purchasing Flip4Mac gives you the components and codec you would need. Then you do the actual conversion in QuickTime Pro. MPEG Streacmlip might work, but I'm not certain. Worth trying since it is free.

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might work. If not, you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Do not install both Perian and the DiVX/3iVX codecs at the same time.

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.

Can I move my library and ipod from a mac to pc?

Okay, I'm real slow when it comes to computers. I have an ipod and a personal library of about 200 cds, so I don't want to have to reload them. Currently my itunes resides on my husband's mac so my ipod is formatted for mac. I'd like to move everything to my new pc. Can this be done, and how can this be accomplished.

There are few ways to do it in order to work for your case.
1. Since your library is currently on a Mac computer, you can know format your iPod with a window pc, which will erase your iPod completely. Just connect your iPod with a computer and do a Restore.
2. After 1, then connect you iPod with your Mac and do a sync -> copy the music files back to your PC
3. Follow the instructions mentioned on the link above

How to convert Java code to Webservice and deploy in to JBOSS via JDEV11g

Greetings. I am trying to develop Java Web service from JDeveloper 11g which has 2 basic methods. I can able to develop the WS out of the Java through Jdev and can able to test the webservice with the help of "Test Web Service" menu option under .JPR.
But when I am trying to deploy the WS.War file in to JBOSS app server (which is our project default server) from JDEV I couldn't able to get the option thought I have created the JBOSS server connection in Jdev. I can see only weblogic server connection under DEPLOY menu. Even if I edit the SOAP URL in WSDL to point JBOSS host and port and manually deploy the WAR in to JOBSS, it is not working, getting deployment error.
Anyone please guide me how to edit the WDSL which should point my JBOSS server (http://localhost:8080) and how to deploy the WAR and access the webservice from my Browser. Step by step help will be really appreciated since I am new to WS. Make this WS work is very important and urgent task in our project. But no luck so far.

Now I can directly deploy Ws.WAR from JDEV to JBOSS. But I am getting the error in the JBOSS log as soon as I deploy the WAR.

I am trying to create client application too for invoke my WS and I failed to create the same while I am mapping the WSDL path in to the client application. Getting error, WSDL path is not available under localhost. (Note: I can able to see the list of WS's deployed in to JBOSS under: http://localhost:8080/jbossws/services which display the Endpoint name and address. But cant able to access the URL)

Are .mov files from my iPad accessible on MAC via iCloud?

I believe I have set up both my iPad and MAC correctly on iCloud, but I'm not sure. Should I not be able to see the .mov files that were taken on my iPad on the MAC? Where would they be? They are not under Movies, where I have other .mov files.
On the iPad, I selected Camera Roll under Backup Options and believe the backup is ocurring correctly (the space required seems to change as I would expect it to). I don't see a Camera option when under iCloud, in Settings.

iCloud doesn't sync videos, only photos. If the videos were taken on your iPad and stored in the camera roll, they would be included in your iPad backup, but the backup is only for restoring your device should you ever need to.
To transfer them to your Mac, import them to iPhoto, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
