Converting the format of TV shows

Hi, I have TV shows that are formatted to play using Quicktime. On my old macbook this worked, but when transferred using a hard drive, to my new macbook pro, they won't play. How do I convert them to work? Thanks!

Yes, there are two bars, left and right. There are no bars top or bottom.
Sounds like a 4:3 format encoding - I assume you haven't accidentally set the Tv aspect ratio to non-widescreen mode.
If it is not widescreen, is there anyway to tell this before you purchase the item. I could not find this in Itunes.
Try the episode preview.
I would have thought they would have everything in widescreen.
You would expect so for modern items but obviously older content will not all be widescreen, though from memory a lost DVD Season 1 I rented was widescreen.
Also, many shows and music videos in particular were aimed primarily at iPod users - some of the older ipods did not have widescreen type displays (do latest ones apart from the Touch?) and I think many things were encoded specifically for 4:3 type display even if originally widescreen.
I must say I was amused the other day seeing an Amazon review on a Star Trek (original 1960's series) HD DVD moaning that the disc was rubbish because the show was only displaying in 4:3 not widescree - as though people back then knew that 16:9 would be the aspect ratio of choice for TVs in the new millenium!

I have a 2 page (portaait format) PDF file how can I convert the PDF file into landscape format before I change it to XL?

    Hi jsremick,
To change the page orientation of a PDF, you need to use Acrobat. (Reader allows you to rotate the page view, but not the pages  themselves).
If you don't have Acrobat, feel free to give it a try. You can download the free 30-day trial from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

  • Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Is it legal to convert the music files, which I have purchased in recent months, to the mp3 format and burn them on to a CD so that they can be played in non-apple music devices that dont support the M4A format?

Yes, of course it is legal.
To convert the format, follow one of these documents:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
iTunes 11 for Mac: Save a copy of a song in a new file format
Also note that you have the option of buying your files in MP3 format in the first place, from Amazon MP3 or other online retailers.  MP3 files will work in iTunes as well as virtually every other player, program, and device.

  • Setting the format of a document with TextEdit

I started working with TextEdit yesterday, so I still have a lot to learn. My question today is about how you chose between plain text and Rich Text. In David Pogue's book on Snow Leopard and in the Help section of "Mac 101: TextEdit", it says that "To change the format of a document:... To make the file Rich Text, chose Format>make Rich Text (Pogue words it a little differently). Now, maybe I'm being a nitpicker, but I am just starting out, and I have to wonder why those instructions don't apply to what I find on my computer. On my computer, Format doesn't lead to Rich Text. On my computer, you make the choice between the two formats by TextEdit>Preferences, and I'd appreciate some clarification before I run into even more puzzlements. I want instructions that match what I will find on my computer.
I can only add that I have the version 1.6 (264) of TextEdit in my computer. Could that be the reason for the different answers?

If it's in RTF, then the Format dropdown will show make plain text. If it's in plain text, then it'll show make RTF. Rather than deal with the menubar optioins, CMD+SHIFT+T toggles between the two.
First of all, Thanks for your help. Second of all, I'll just keep my thoughts about Apple for being responsible for their "instructions" to myself. It would just be venting. As to the keyboard tip, I am always amazed that there really are some people who can remember such things, I can't. Anyway, I have a few more questions if you'll indulge me. (1) What does "Open and Save" mean?, (2) If I should put a mark in front of the statements, "Ignore rich text commands to HTML/RTF file" would that mean that some day in the future I might not be able to read part of an incoming message because I had forgotten to undo that mark? If that's the case, it would obviously be better to never activate that statement.

  • The custom style mapping option text still maintains the word formatting or it shows a style override in the InDesign style - how do I correct this?

When I tell the custom style mapping option to format a Word style (from an rtf document) with the InDesign style, the text still maintains the word formatting or it shows a style override in the InDesign style. I have a large document that needs to import the styles correctly and I've followed the tutorials exactly however the placed text is still hanging onto the word RTF styles. I want the rtf text to convert to my InDesign styles completely without overrides.

I actually need the cell styles. That's what sets my font, spacing, and GREP styles.
I did find the solution today. In the table style or table setup, I needed to set the "Stroke Drawing Order" to "Column Strokes in Front". Even though it was previously set to "Best Joins" and I had no strokes for rows or for the table borders, it just wasn't giving priority to my dotted columns.
    Thanks for your response though!

  • I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro?

I'm a bit confused. Since my original camera format was 720/60p, and I converted the footage to Pro Res422 in order to edit in Final Cut Pro 7, should I convert back to a higher quality format before sending the file to DVD Studio Pro? If so, which Compressor codec is best to use in order to preserve the original 720/60p?   How do I maintain the highest quality?

No...ProRes is a high quality format. Finishing format.  Many TV networks take that as a final deliverable.
BUT...DVDs aren't high definition...they are SD.  You cannot make a 720p60 DVD with DVD Studio Pro.  Any DVD you make will be SD...720x480.  The only HD DVD format out there is BluRay, and for that you need a BluRay burner.
As for making a high quality DVD...using the BEST QUALITY settings in Compressor will work:
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it and select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the browser and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Need to convert the binary data in blob field to readable format

    Hi,
We need to convert the Binary data in the BLOB field to readable format and need to display it in Oracle Apps Environment, does anybody come across the similar requirement.
    please advise, thanks in advance.
    Regards,

You could use standard Attachments functionality here ... if the blob is not in FND_LOBS, insert into FND_LOBS, fnd_attached_documents etc to enable viewing via "Attachments" to the entity the blob is related to.

  • How to convert the output of Applescript which is in object format to text or string format??

    Hi All,
I want to convert the output of Applescript which is in object format to string or text format, am running Applescript with Java, I need to display the output of applescript in Eclipse Java Console, since its object format the output is not properly displayed..
Pls suggest.. I used the below code
    repeat with i in allContents
if class of i is button then set the end of allStaticText to contents of i
            end repeat
    Applscript ouptput
    {button 1 of window "Player Installer" of application process "Install  Player" of application "System Events", button 2 of window "Player Installer" of application process "Install  Player" of application "System Events", button 3 of window "Player Installer" of application process "Install  Player" of application "System Events", button "Finish" of UI element 1 of scroll area 1 of window "Player Installer" of application process "Install  Player" of application "System Events"}
    Java output
    <NSAppleEventDescriptor: 'obj '{ 'form':'indx', 'want':'butT', 'seld':1, 'from':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'cwin', 'seld':'utxt'(" Player Installer"), 'from':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'pcap', 'seld':'utxt'("Install  Player"), 'from':'null'() } } }>

Here's an improved version of the previous script, where the handler now returns "button 2 of window \"Untitled\" of application process \"TextEdit\" of application \"System Events\"" instead of "button \"2\" of window \"Untitled\" of application process \"TextEdit\" of application \"System Events\"":
    tell application "System Events"

    on objectToText(UI_element)
        set theText to ""
        tell application "System Events"
            repeat
if exists attribute "AXParent" of UI_element then
set theParent to value of attribute "AXParent" of UI_element
set theClass to class of UI_element
if name of UI_element exists then

                    else
                        set k to 0
get UI elements of theParent whose class is theClass
                        repeat with thisItem in result
                            set k to k + 1
if contents of thisItem is UI_element then exit repeat

    Thank you

So it seems from reading the COMMAND manual that my first issue is that I used a 16GB SD card, and the manual says it will only recogize up to a 2GB SD card. I did use my MB Air's SD card slot and crated a folder and dragged the music files to it, then to the card. So I am going to get a 2GB card and try that next. Otherwise just stick with the iPOD connected. At least that is 8GB

  • I recored a video with my ipad, downloaded it to my mac but I cant upload it to Youtube because the format IMG is not a video format. How can I convert it?

How can I convert a video I took with my ipad on the format IMG to a supported format for Youtube?

To upload videos to YouTube we have to make sure videos are in a format that YouTube accepts. Here’s the list of some well-known video formats which YouTube supports:
WebM files (Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codec)
MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files – (typically supporting h264 and mpeg4 video codecs and AAC audio codec)
AVI (Many cameras output this format – typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM)
MPEGPS (Typically supporting MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio)
    WMV)
FLV (Adobe – FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio)
But I think you get the wrong video file. iPad recorded video files are in m4v, mp4, mov, avi format but not the img files. Anyway, if you need a video converter, Format factory or iFunia video converter are good choice.
    Good luck!
