Converting through PavTube for FCP 5
I just purchased and downloaded the PavTube HD Video Converter for Mac. I shot video with a Canon Rebel T3i and saved the footage in a folder. I then uploaded it to the PavTube Converter, chose Apple ProRes 422, and tried to convert, but I received this error:
The current profile requires FCP 6 (or above versions) to be pre-installed.
I have Final Cut Pro 5. Is there any way to make this work? I really need FCP to work with this footage because the raw footage going directly into FCP is VERY slow and requires lots of time-consuming rendering.
What do I do???
Thanks!
Sorry, FCP 5 doesn't do ProRes. ProRes was introduced with FCP 6...so yeah, you pretty much have to have FCP 6 or 7 in order to work with ProRes. FCP 5 won't even WORK with ProRes footage. The options for FCP 5 are DVCPRO HD (that's anamorphic HD...not full raster like ProRes, but what you have)...or uncompressed HD. But that requires very fast hard drives to play back. DVCPRO HD is your best bet if you are stuck on FCP 5.
Editing the raw footage is NEVER recommended in FCP.

Converting still files for FCP
Hi there
Can someone tell me the best way to import still photographs in to FCP? At the
moment I have black & white high res NEF files. Do you have a good suggestion for a prefered file that I should convert them to to use on the timeline?
Cheers
Tim xKey to remember:
Convert all your stills, whatever format, to 72 dpi. If your originals are 300 dpi, in Photoshop convert them to 72 dpi, resizing them much larger. If the still is 4 inches wide in 300 dpi, make it 15 inches wide in 72 dpi. That way you don't lose resolution, merely change the dpi.
Video is 72 dpi. Final Cut gets VERY sloggy and problematic when you work with higher dpi stills.
It could very well be true about jpegs (as they ARE more compressed), but I just did a 90 minute docu with hundreds of stills and found that using jpegs generated no more artifacting than psd or tiff files in the final HD output. The potential problem with the psd or tiff files is that they are MUCH bigger than the jpegs, and Final Cut has to handle them on the timeline ... which slows everything down when you start creating moves with them.
All the best,

Converting MOD files for FCP - what compression?
I've been given lots of MOD (and MOI) files to edit. I realise I need to convert these to quicktime MOV files before I can import them into FCP, and I will be using MPEG Streamclip to do this.
The question is what compression should I use? h.264, Apple DV PAL, the list is endless. The end result will be exported for the web.
If it helps, the footage was recorded on a Canon FS-200.Here is a link to the Nick Holmes tutorial on MPEG Streamclip

Could you recommend what to convert .mts to for FCP
I am cutting my first HD project, so apologies for my gaps in knowledge ahead of time...
I am cutting footage that was supplied to me as .mts files (native to the camera). These were given to me on a drive, so I do not have the camera. My question is what do you recommend I convert these file to for cutting in Final Cut Pro 7 (Final Cut Studio 3).
I am using iSkysoft Video Converter. I can do it as .mp4, which makes for smaller files (about 4GB)... I can also do ProRes 422, which makes large files (about 32 GB). When I do a visual a/b look at these, there are very finite difference in the detail, but not enough to matter for this particular project. Therefore, what do people recommend that will cut the best in FCP?
Also, when I import into FCP, do I still go with DV-NTSC for the main setting in FCP Easy Setup? Or? Eventually will be out-putting this for a friend that will burn onto a blu-ray.
Thank you in advance for helping bring me into the modern, Hi-Def world of editing!ProRes 422. or ProRes LT if that option is available. It's about 2/3 the size of 422. FCP does not work with MP4 files. It might APPEAR to, but issues will arise.
And no, you do NOT use DV/NTSC. That's an SD format, and you are working with HD. Just make a sequence, add a clip to that sequence and click YES when FCP asks if you want it to match the clip settings. -
Converting mts files for use in fcp
i know this horse has already been turned into glue ...
in any case, i have a dvd's worth of mts files provided by a client. can't import them directly into fcp, so i need to run them through some sort of conversion. tried MPEG StreamClip and that doesn't work. Toast is too expensive. demoed VoltaicHD and didn't care for it. the two that worked the best are Moyea HD Video Converter and Pavtube MTS/M2TS Converter that were recommended. very simple interface, reasonable file sizes and much quicker than VoltaicHD. they go for $35 which i guess is reasonable. interestingly they seem like the same exact product just slightly different skins. anyone have any experience with either? one thing that i did find disconcerting is they use SWREG as their e-commerce provider who immediately tried to sell me keycode backup insurance. the whole operation seemed a bit shady to me. anyone have any problems with these guys?
if anyone has any other solutions to this mts conversion issue it'd be appreciated. thanks.Hi,is your problem resolved? there is a good mts converter for mac of highly-regarded reputation from this forum and other popular camcorder forum.http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=251941

Convert vob files for use in FCP X
I need to convert VOB files for use in FCP X on my macbookpro in OS X Lion (10.7.5) I use Clipwrap to convert other formats, but it does not seem to accept VOB for conversion (or if it does, I have not figured out how). In searching the web, I've come across several products that tout themselves as the best, fastest, easiest VOB to Prores converters etc., some that advertise as "free" when actually only a watermarked trial version is free. I have no idea of the actual quality of any of these (some examples are Brorsoft video converter for Mac, and Acrok HD Video Converter...), and would like some input from folks w/ experience in these things before dropping $ on the problem.
In another thread on this site I read something about MPEG Streamclip, & something about needing to separately download an MPG2 converter for it w/ Lion or Mountain Lion - the process sounded confusing and I couldn't tell if it applied to my situation or not...
Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed.Midnighttrain wrote:

MpegStremclip is THE Swiss Army Knife, when it comes to conversion, a 100% reliable, it IS absolutely free (any download a dollar = Stefano would be a millionaire!), I dare to say it is THE most recommended 3d party tool in the editor community ....
How & why you need to install the mp2 plug-in does Signore Cinque explain in simple words on his website:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html -
I am using an image from the clients web site, that when I import to fcp, the color is completely different. I have forgotten how to change the colors for fcp.
Any help is appreciated!
thanksNo. FCP is a video editor. It does not do graphic colorspace format conversions - other than taking what ever material you drop into a time line and convert it to either Rec 709 for HD or Rec 601 for Standard Def.

Best format to convert Ultra HD Flip Camera file for FCP editing?
We are using two types of cameras for a video project and one of them is a Flip Camera. Unfortunately, FCP doesn't play too nice with raw flip camera files so I need to convert said file using MPEG Streamclip. What is the best/recommended format to convert the movie file to for FCP editing?
Thanks! From my experience, Pro Res 422 has been the most recommended for any conversion. Thanks!
Should I look for a specific audio compression option or should I just leave it as "uncompressed"? -
MPG to Final Cut Pro , convert mpg files to FCP freely
Why need to convert/import MPG files to Final Cut Pro?
Final Cut Pro is the premium choice for any Mac video editing, and it is widely used by Mac users now. These MPEG standard files can be these different codes and cause failure in importing to Final Cut Pro. If anyone comes across the situation, the best solution is to get aids from MPEG/MPG to FCP converter for Mac, which can help you to convert MPEG group files to FCP compatible video format and then files can be easily imported for editing job.
As we know that Final Cut Pro don't natively support MPG, MPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 files, it can import MPEG-4 files (but need to be rendered once you place them on your timeline) and MOV files (without rendering). Therefore, to import MPG to Final Cut Pro directly, the best way is to convert MPG to Final Cut Pro supported Apple ProRes MOV files.
How to convert MPG to Final Cut Pro(fcp)
Step 1: Import MPG files
Download the latest version of MPG to Final Cut Pro Converter, install and run. And then, click Add Files to import MPG files to FCP, or you can also drag MPG files directly to MPG to Final Cut Pro directly.
Step 2: Choose output format and directory
You can click the drop-down list of Convert Toto select output format as "Final Cut Pro"-> "Apple ProRes MOV ". After that, click "…" of Save Toto designate a directory to save your converted files.
Step 3: Convert MPG to Final Cut Pro (X)
Click Convert to transcode MPG to MOV for editing in Final Cut Pro.

Summary:If you are looking for the best way to transcode MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 videos to ProRes MOV for FCP 7/X and FCE, you can follow this post, it has offered best solutions for editing MPEG videos on Mac in Final Cut Pro 7/X, Final Cut Express.
Cases:
The following are two problems when some users import MPEG-1/MPEG-2 to Final Cut:
"I am trying to import MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X. I have the raw files from a Sony Handicam HDR-SR5 as well as raw files from an Sony Handicam MDR-CX560. These files were recorded as MPEG-2 files and copied from the camera hard drives (entire folders were copied containind the MPEG-2 fies) to a local hard drive on my computer. Final Cut Pro X does not recognize the files and will not import them. I have tried to use Compressor to conver the fies. I am using the very latest version that touts being able to export to Final Cut X format. I don't see that option anywhere in the settings."
Question:
Is there a way to get MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files into Final Cut Pro X without having to convert them?
Answer:
Don't try to work with (highly compressed) MPEG 2 in FCP X. Use software to convert to ProRes 422 first, it's best codec for final cut pro or final cut express. Life will be much easier for you if you do. ProRes 422 is roughly between 5 and 8 times bigger than native camera footage - sometimes as much as 10 times, I believe, but it's well worth it for editing, effects and playback quality. The time required depends largely on your processor power but 30 mins sounds realistic.
Software you need:
Pavtube HD Video Converter for Mac
This software can convert MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Apple ProRes 422 codec for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Expr editing without rendering.
Step by step guide:
1. Download and install the best MPEG1/MPEG2 to ProRes Converter and launch it to add your videos to it.
2. Choose output format. Click on the “Format”> Final Cut Pro, Apple PreRes 422(HQ), Apple PreRes 422, Apple ProRes 422(LT), etc are all the proper choice for you.
3. Click "Settings" to adjust the parameters as you want, like Video Codec, bit rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, bit rate, channels. Set the video frame rate as 30fps, video size as 1920*1080 will be better.
4. Click Convert button to start MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 to Final Cut friendly Apple ProRes 422 for native editing on Mac OS X.
5. When the conversion ends, you can run the Final Cut Pro and click File --> Import --> Files to import the resulted MOV files and edit them in FCP easily, you can follow this import video to fcp guide.
From the steps above, I think you got the point to convert and import MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files to Apple ProRes 422 for Final Cut editing, please have a try, this software will solve you MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 importing and editing problems, and then you can import and use your MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 in Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X or Final Cut Express on Mac without any problems.
Now you can get DVD Creator which can help you easily burn video to DVD disc/ISO files.

DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!
Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
Thanks all,
Best wishes
MichaelHi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
Kind regards
Michael -
Using a MacBook Pro, where do I find a "Home" key for FCP?
Hey there everyone: I'm struggling through volumes of FCP manuals hoping to edit HD footage on the fly with my MacBook Pro. The problem is that the short cut keys are all labeled assuming one is working with a full keyboard, not a lap top. Any ideas would be helpful.
Use the function (fn) key and left arrow for Home, function key and right arrow for End

How to build a plug-in for FCP
I want to build an export plug-in for FCP. It is a little similar to Automatic duck export plug-in. I want to export sequence in my own format.
The version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.
I downloaded FxPlug SDK, but it is only about video effect, not what i want.
And I didn’t find any other documents about how to build an export plug-in for FCP.
Who has some related documents or can support me on this?
I will pay for the help if i can afford it.I don't own Automatic Duck so I don't know how that particular application goes about doing this, but the only way I can think of doing it is through a QuickTime Export Component.

Flat File Load Issue - Cannot convert character sets for one or more charac
We have recently upgraded our production BW system to SPS 17 (BW SP19)
and we have issues loading flat files (contain Chinese, Japanese and
Korean characters) which worked fine before the upgrade. The Asian
languages appear as invalid characters (garbled) as we can see in PSA. The Character Set
Settings was previously set as Default Setting and it worked fine until
the upgrade abd we referred to note 1130965 and with the code page 1100
the load went through (without the Cannot convert character sets for one or more characters error) however the Asian language characters will appear
as invalid characters. We tried all the code pages suggested in the note e.g.
4102, 4103 etc on the info packages but it did not work. Note that the
flat files are encoded in UTF-8.I checked lower case option for all IO
When i checked the PSA failed log no of records processed is "0 of 0" my question is with out processing single record system is througing this error message.
When i use same file loading from local workstation no error message
I am thinking when I FTP the file from AS/400 to BI Application Server(Linex) some invalid characters are adding but how can we track that invalid char?
Gurus please share your thoughts on this I will assign full points.

Converting Frame Size for Final Cut
I have XDCAM HD .mov files that are 1440x1080, which I converted through Streamclip to 1920x1080. And 2 problems arose:
1) the 1st time I imported them in the Project I had the right Frame Size : 1920x1080, but the wrong Pixel Aspect : HD (1440x1080) instead of Square.
2) the 2nd time I looked for an Option in Streamclip to select the Pixel Aspect, but there is none. I imported the 1920x1080 files into the project, and they appeared as 1440x1080 files!!!
I also tried creating a sequence with the desired specs (Frame Size and Pixel Aspect) and said NO when asked to conform the Sequence to the Clip. It worked but the RED Rendering will take forever.
Do you have a better solution?
Could the problem be my Version 6 Final Cut? Or am I missing something? I would be most grateful for any suggestion. If you have iTunes 9 or higher, go to +iTunes > Preferences > General+. Under 'When inserting a CD' select any one of the three import options. Then click +Import Settings > Import Using > AIFF Encoder.+ In the same panel, click +Setting > Custom.+ Select +Sample Rate = 48Khz, Sample Size = 16 bit, Channels = Stereo.+ Then click +OK, OK, OK.+
Then in your Library, select the song you want to convert. Then do +Advanced > Create AIFF Version.+ iTunes will make a copy of the song & convert it to AIFF.
