Converting to 128bit ACC... a huge pain (2nd gen)

Most of my songs are 192bit, so I thought if I checked that convert box I could easily put more songs on it. It turns out this wasn't the case. After waiting over an hour for it to be done, I took it off the dock and tested it. Everything was working, so I plugged it back in to charge some more, then it re-converts it, and it does that every time I plug it in. So I decided to uncheck the box, then it yells at me for not having enough room.
Does anyone have a solution?
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.0GHz (White), 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD; ipod video 30gig (black)

I see now, once I change my music, it does it again.
I wish that it would recognize that all of them are
already converted besides whatever I added..
iTunes converts (if the option is checked) WHEN it loads the songs to the Shuffle, EACH time... IF you really want to convert your 192kb/s mp3 to AAC 128kb/s:
To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key and choose Advanced > "Convert Selection to," then choose the folder or disk containing the songs you want to convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted except songs you purchased from the iTunes Store. (Purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted.)

  • Movies converted for AppleTV won't sync to 2nd gen iPod touch with iTunes 8

I have about 40 movies that I converted to "Apple TV" format with Quicktime Pro. They all play fine on my Apple TV. But only one of them will sync with my new 2nd gen iPod touch... and that one was converted by someone else for me to Apple TV with iSquint!
iTunes tells me the remaining videos cannot be played on this iPod. ***? They play in iTunes, they play on the Apple TV... what's the difference with the iPod?
So now I'm having to completely reconvert all my movies to iPod format with the function in iTunes 8 "Create iPod or iPhone version" but this is PAINFULLY SLOW!!! One video on my brand new 3.06Ghz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo took FOUR HOURS
Anyone else having this problem? Anyone else find a faster way to fix it???
    HELP!!

    It just does.
You can do it quicker using other tools.
For instance I have a hardware device called Turbo.264 which shifts the conversion off the computer and is much quicker.
You can read all about it here :-

  • Converting WMA to ACC

I recently moved from PC to Mac, and I have about 5GB of files that I am unable to add to itunes or sync to my ipod. This is because they are all in WMA format, and I have no idea how to convert them to ACC or MP3. I see the "convert selections to ACC" option in itunes, but itunes wont let me add them to the library to convert the files. Any help?

Is this on your mac or PC. If you are talking about your mac, you will have to seek out a third party solution. WMA converting is a PC only feature.

  • What happened to the option to see all your purchased movies alphabetically?  I can only see recent purchases and then I have to look by movie type.  With over 500 movies purchased this is a huge pain.

What happened to the option to see all your purchased movies alphabetically?  I can only see recent purchases and then I have to look by movie type.  With over 500 movies purchased, this is a huge pain.  For instance the movie Airport 77 is classified as Drama not action?  But it is action?  I have to look at both types to find the film.  I will stop buying films via AppleTV if this is the way it is going to stay.  I am not searching for films in this crazy manner.

Same issue here. Might have to do with size of library. I too have over 300 purchased movies. "ALL PURCHASED" folder disappeared yesterday on all my AppleTV's. My son only has 20+ purchased movies and his still shows "ALL" folder. However, I had him log in under my account and "ALL" folder is missing??? I hope Apple gets this resolved quickly. I too do not want to flip through various Genres looking for movies.

  • Converting a 2nd Gen iPod to Windows

I want to convert a 2nd generation iPod to the Windows (Fat 32) format so I can give it to my girlfriend to use on her Windows XP box. Any help will be appreciated.

Actually, that guide is incorrect (out of date).
You will need at least firmware 1.26 on your iPod in order to be able to update it to the latest firmware for 2nd gen iPods (in order to be able to use iTunes).
If you don't currently have at least 1.26 you can download it from this site. After it's installed on the iPod (and you can do this either on the PC or the Mac) then just download the latest firmware version and update that and you'll be good to go.

  • Convert 2nd gen iPod from Windows to Mac

Hi, my 2nd gen iPod (touch wheel) is in Windows format. (I know, I know). It's the only iPod I have that is not recognized by my Mac.
It works fine, but I don't have a Win system with support for firewire except for one running Win7, and that is not (yet) supported in Xplay.
Now that I'm Macified I'd like to restore the iPod to Mac factory default. Is this doable? iTunes doesn't presently recognize it as an iPod, OS X sees it as a disk drive so the cabling and ports are o.k.
Thanks for any suggestion you'd care to make.

    Hello there,
First of all, I would like to note that using a Windows formatted iPod is possible on your Mac, because Macs can read and write to FAT32. So you don't necessarily have to reformat it. However, if you would still like to format the iPod to Mac's native format, I would Disk Utility. For instructions on how to do this, see this article.
    http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
After reformatting, you will have to restore the iPod through iTunes. If iTunes still does not recognize the iPod, I would maybe check out this article related to the issue and follow the troubleshooting steps provided.

    Hope this helps.

  • I have a 8gb A1288 (2nd Gen) ipod touch having huge problem during update, please help

I have a 8gb A1288 (2nd Gen) ipod that has been working fine till now. The device asked for a software update and downloaded the necessary software. During the update process; however, something happened and the computer started not recognizing the device now. On the device screen there is a symbol asking for me to connect the cable to itunes but even if I connect it to the computer, the device is not recognized. Resetting the device didn't solve the problem. Could you please help?

    Hello!
Tried DFU mode? This stands for Device Firmware Update and/or Download Firmware Upgrade.
This is how to put your device into DFU:
    1. Connect to A computer with iTunes open, Turn off (Whilst still connected)
    2. Hold Home + Sleep/wake together for 10 seconds.
    3. Let go of sleep wake BUT keep holding home for 10 seconds.
This shoould result in a message on your PC/Mac screen. Follow the steps and it should work. Let me know of the results.

  • 2nd Gen Touch & WiFi & Hidden SSID networks

I have tried to read all of the (many, many) existing threads on WiFi issues with the new iPod Touch -- frankly this ought to be a HUGE embarrassment to Apple.
Let me add to the list of problems -- the many strikes against this otherwise quite lovable device:
It doesn't play well with networks that use hidden SSID, so-called "closed" networks. All of the known existing problems with Touch 2Gen and ordinary WiFi networks (failure to join automatically, needing to have the device reset before joining, needing to turn off/on/off/on the wifi on the device before joining, etc. etc. etc.) -- are replicated and worsened when attempting to join and remain connected to a hidden-SSID network (yes, even one running on Apple's own wireless router!).
The worst is that, very often, one has to repeat going through the entire process of entering the network name and password -- as if the network had been 'forgotten.' (Although, it can be proved the iPod hasn't 'forgotten' the network, as the device will remember details such as a Static IP to associate with the network -- it just forgets to join it in the first place!)
    Apple, Apple, Apple!
Are you determined to make me stop buying your products in the future?
Do you intend to fix the very buggy WiFi on this device?

Have you (or anyone who replied on this thread) actually opened a support case with Apple?
I just got a new 2nd Gen touch a couple of weeks ago and have been having the same problems described by you and the others here in my office (which uses a hidden SSID + 128bit WEP). Usually, the connection is lost when the unit comes out of sleep and it won't come back until I do a reset of the network settings and re-enter all the connection parameters.
I have 2 other co-workers with 2nd gen units and they have the exact same problems (worse actually, since they are both farther from the nearest access point).
There are 2 other folks here who have 1st gen units and neither one has ever had any problems here in the building. So this does appear to be a 2nd gen only issue.
I installed the 2.2 update which didn't help or hurt, but I was having the problems with the older 2.1.2 software.
It would be encouraging to at least hear from someone that Apple has acknowledged this is a real problem. If there is some sort of workaround, that would be even more encouraging.
    Thanks,
    Mark Edington

  • Is ther a chance that atv 2nd gen read .mkv format?

    hallo,
as a new Apple TV (2nd generation),
i have been trying to change all my storage from .mkv to .m4v (that is the best for the atv)
i have been trying some software like
    1. visual hub
    2. HandBrake
    3. submerge
i have to say that when you want subs, submerge to that in the best way and the atv showed the subs in perfect way. (not cutout on speech breaks like HandBrake)
submerge do that different and simply makes the sub file part of the .m4v.
i have to say that all the software that i have write above to export from .mkv to .m4v or other format do that very but very slowly!
it takes an 2 and a half hours to convert tv show on .mkv that contain 45m of showtime to .m4v.
the file is 1.7Gb capacity (the normal for hd ready (720p) tv show.
now take a second and imagine how many time takes to convert and merge subs to file like movie in 720p that is capacity is 4.7Gb at least.
it takes like one day at least and stuck the software in the middle. seems like impossible to do that.
the whole convert and export thing takes forever and is very annoying that you cant simply convert your storage to .m4v from .mkv in the easy way and without to wait so many time.
if anybody have software or idea
1.how to the convert and merge simply and fast?
    2. the other way to make the atv 2nd gen to read an mkv file with subs (it seems the best way and i would like to know how to doing that)
hopes that my little post here help to some new atv 2nd gen users to understand the all pictur.
    regards and thank you all

so i can say that "apple tv is not a streamer".
No, AppleTV will stream video from your PC/Mac, but it has to be in the iTunes library with iTunes open, and has to be in the correct format which for most purposes will be h264.
    See under video formats:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
popcorn a110, xstreamer and others better then him because the smp8634 chip?
The chips in some media players may confer some advantages, but it's more a question that Apple don't support MPEG/MPEG-2/ISO/Video_TS/AVI/Divx/MKV etc etc on the AppleTV
Full HD in certain formats/codecs may be beyond AppleTV's hardware, but many others would work if they were supported, it's just that they're not, so you have to convert non-compatible video using apps like the ones you've mentioned.
Many will disagree but I personally think it was a big factor that held back AppleTV1 sales - many of the other formats are popular and widely used, but Apple don't want to support them on AppleTV for one reason or another.
Maybe they expect you to buy/rent everything from iTunes, though there are undoubtedly other factors.
and why apple dosent want to add him the srtreamer option that he can read any format that exist just like the a110 and xstreamer pro
It's nothing to do with streaming, AppleTV does stream, the AppleTV software only supports streaming the formats listed in the specs. As you say there are devices with a much wider repertoire of supported formats, it may be one of those would be better for you.
AppleTV's big plus point is it's user interface - many other (mostly WD) streamers I've tried have very poor interfaces, I've not tried the ones you mention.
why make are lifes so hard!??! (-:
Some will say Apple support a limited set of formats as there are so many variations out there that even devices that say they support things don't fully or have problems with certain files, and limiting formats will reduce issues.
Personally I think it's because they assume most content will come from Macs iLife apps or itunes Store which will produce content in suitable formats. Some will argue that containers like MKV are simply used for potentially illegal disc rips and therefore Apple won't support them (or maybe is pressurised by content providers not to provide them?).
    Anyhow, send feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
I don't think we'll see new formats added, but you never know.
Also, it will be interesting to see what Airplay from iPhones/iPads offers - if it's available to any application this might be a gateway to different format support given teh likes of VLC being ported (in a limited form so far) to iPad.

I checked all my settings so doesn't seem to be that.Apple no longer is upgrading this unit..I use windows XP but don't believe this is an issue since i have read posts saying this is not the problem..right now am converting my higher bit rate music to see if that changes anything. I also turned off my unit and the next thing am going to do is a restore if this doesn't work. Anyone find a fix for this yet? I also see that this is not a unique problem to Gen 2 units and is occuring on newer units as well..thank you all for any advise...

    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) not showing up as a device in iTunes

    Hi all,
I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
    Mac OSX 10.6.5
    iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you in advance.

I seem to recall though that I have seen a screenshot somewhere on the web where iTunes showed the ATV 2nd gen as a device.
Not seen that, but the old ones have a logo that look (to me) like the new one, or at least a small darker grey than they are - they show up nicely in the iPad/iPhone Remote app though
If you are right it would be huge disappointment!
I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
    Don't think so, it's a valid comment.
    Use this:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
Thank you for your help anyway. I wait for confirmation of somebody else just to make sure...
    Fair enough.

  • I have a 2nd gen airport extreme (no time capsule) and 2nd gen airport expresses:  is there any new additons I can make to my existing network to improve reach and integrity of signal?

I have the older airport extreme and 2 2nd gen airport expresses in a large house.  Lately I have been getting complaints about internet  "drop out" and weak signal (orange signal - weak network)  in one (oddly enough the nearest one to my extreme).  What can I do to insure network and internet integrity going forward. Do I buy a new a. extreme and convert the old one (how is also a question)?  Do I buy new expresses?  (and why) Do I move the original express out of room and get longer internet cable?  Extreme is upstairs in a split level and must remain there because of proximity to modem and its connection to security. The "working" express is all the way on the other side of the house through 2 concrete walls and does ok - though signal is understandable week. The nearer one with the "problems" is at the foot of the stairs less than 50 feet away, behind an always closed door  (not tested-belongs to teenager voicing complaints).  Incidentally the other bedroom directly across from the closed door one, houses a temporary adult child at home who has no problems with their lap top (2nd gen macbook) and signal.

There is no easy answer to your question, but here are some things to think about.
The newest generation of airport extremes and expresses are dual-band devices. they transmit on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. the 2.4 GHz frequency penetrates walls better than the 5 GHz frequency which is faster in terms of data throughput. they also have improved antennas which may help your signal problems. unfortunately the only way to be sure would be trial and error you can also walk around with a laptop and monitor the signal strength to see where you have dropouts and consider repositioning your express devices to compensate .

  • IOS5 on iPod Touch 2nd Gen

Will it ever happen, or is my iPod Touch 2nd Gen now just a useless hunk of junk that won't work with modern apps, which all seem to need iOS5?

Guys like you crack me up, really....
I mean c'mon...  Do you really expect Apple or any other company to spend money to support obsolete technology?  Do you think that Ford, GM, or any car makers still have parts for cars made in the 1920's?  Its the same thing with personal electronics with one HUGE exception:  Personal electronics become obsolete much, much faster than cars do.
And what's really sad is that it is obvious to the most casual observer than guys like you don't have the time or the inclination to actually do any research before you whip out the plastic, and its also obvious that because you don't have the tiniest inkling as to how quickly technology changes, you get all bent out of shape when you finally realize that you are behind everyone else.
Oh, and while we are talking about obsolete stuff, I have a 30gig 5th gen iPod Video, a  2nd gen Touch and a 30 gig Zune, all of which I resurrected from the dead.  They all  work fine and not one is currently supported by their manufacturers.
I also have a 32 gig 4th Gen Touch and an iPhone 4.   The 30 gig iPod gets used in my truck, I use the Zune when I ride my Harley Sportster so I can listen to FM radio when I want to, the 32 gig Touch goes with my touring trike 'cause I use a Griffin FM transmitter to stream through the bike's FM stereo, and I use the iPhone for making phone calls..
Now really, isn't technology, even if it is obsolete, just freakin' wonderful?

What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
    What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
    1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
    3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.
