Converting to AAC copies files

When I convert a group of songs into AAC format, it converts them, but then I have two copies of the AAC file. Is there a way to keep it from doing that, or should I just delete the duplicates?
Thanks.

When I convert a group of songs into AAC format
Converting them from what?
When you convert files, it makes a new copy. The original file stays and is untouched in iTunes.
Turning off *Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library*, as Katrina posted, only applies when adding new music to iTunes. If it's already in iTunes and you *Convert file to...* , it makes a new file in the selected format.

  • HT1329 How do I convert an AAC music file to mp3?

Hi: I have several albums on my new computer (G5 desktop running OS10.58) iTunes 9--that are in AAC format. When I try to burn these albums, the prompt tells me I can't burn them in mp3 unless they come to the burning in the mp3. I didn't realize the former owner set the import of music cds as AAC. Anyway I want to  convert all my albums that are in AAC to mp3 cause I can't play my music burned cd in AAC in my cd player. In OS panther there was a menu option to do that. In this version of itunes on this computer, the only menu option is to turn a file to AAC. Hummm. Now what do I dp?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Carol

Correct.  iTunes can only burn an MP3 disc from songs already in MP3 format.

Carol,  You can use iTunes to convert AAC to MP3.  Follow this guide:

  • Export a playlist (to Desktop or Document Folder.  Convert from AAC to MP3

It seems that in an earlier version of Itunes I was able to export a playlist (a list of song names of a CD I had just burned), and then import that list ito a CD label printing program (Discus, epson;s Print CD). This capability saves a ton of keystrokes and , to me, seems like a fairly simple capability to include in Itunes.
Also I would like to know if there is a way to convert audio (AAC ?) files to MP3 three files (for files that are already in your Itunes library?

    1. You can select a playlist and use File > Library > Export Playlist to get a text file.

  • Bug in v11: Convert to AAC from Home Shared lib, same machine

I keep two iTunes libraries on my Mac.  One is high-res [Apple lossless] and is the source for playback on my audio system. The other contains compressed [AAC] versions of the same music and is used on my phone.
Prior to iTunes 11, when I wanted to add music to both libraries, I did this:
    - rip to the disk to Apple Lossless and add it to the HiRes iTunes library. Add album art.
    - Close iTunes then relaunch with the AAC library.
    - [Option key] Advanced menu - Convert to AAC:
    - a File system dialog is presented - select the music from the HiRes library to convert and import.
    Done.
In iTunes 11, the process should be the same except that 'Convert to AAC' now appears at  File - Create New Version.
That would be fine if it worked.
A couple of things have changed:
    - The menu is in a new place with a new name,
    - Convert to AAC no longer presents a File system dialog from which to select the files to convert.
    Tried this:
    - Rip to Apple Lossless and add to the HiRes lib. Close iTunes.
    - Open iTunes with the AAC library.
    - Select the HiRes library in the Library menu.
    - Navigate to the newly imported files - select them.
    - (hold down Option key) File - Convert to AAC
This error message appears in a dialog:
None of the selected files were converted because they could not be found.
To verify that the files can 'be found', I try playing them.  No problem.
    Looks like a bug.
    regards,
    -jg-

I've encoutered the same problem, I think the best thing to do is to let apple know this bug exists throug: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
The only way around it at the moment is to import the original file into the itunes library and then choose 'create aac version' after that you can delete the original file from your itunes library.
If you work with a lot of files at once you can do this easily by setting the library to list view, right click on the header with name, time, etc. select 'kind' and then click on kind in the header. Now your songs are sorted by kind and everything that isn't AAC wil be at the bottom of the list.

  • How do I designate a separate folder for files Converted to AAC?

Can I stop iTunes putting files converted to AAC in the same folder as the original files and thereby forcing (a) me to have to individually "pick them out" and copy them to a separate folder and (b) their names to be changed by adding "1" to the end?
Or is Apple determined to to make playing iTunes store music on Windows Mobile as inconvenient as possible?

Pamela, this is the problem I am having:
Windows Mobile Player (and Touchflo on my HTC) won't play tracks in the format that they download from the iTunes store in.
To make them play on my WM device I have to apply the "Convert to AAC" function in iTunes. This is in itself intruiging because according to GSpot both the input and output files are in exactly the same format and bitrate, except that the output file is slightly shorter. All I know is that WM won't play the input file but will play the output file.
The problem I have is that Convert to AAC puts the output files into the same folder as the input files. It seems to do the same thing with playlists. Consequently, to copy the tracks onto my WM device I have to at some point go through the playlist or folder and manually pick out the "converted tracks". This is what I am trying to avoid. The other small problem is that the file names have an annoying " 1" on the end of them, although I can learn to live with that.

  • Workflow- iTunes Convert to AAC, copy to ipod & delete converted files

I like to save my music in either Apple Lossless or MP3 (320kb) formats. Unfortunately, when I go to save these onto my ipod mini the files are too large and take up too much space. Id like to try and mimic the software that comes with an ipod shuffle where it can take any file, compress it and copy it to my ipod mini without creating duplicates in my itunes.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to create a workflow to do the following:
    1. Get selected itunes songs (any kind)
    2. Convert to AAC
    3. Copy to ipod
4 Delete the converted files in itunes
Ive looked at some of the automator actions and im a bit confused with the difference of
    - delete original selected tracks -OR-
-delete files of the original selected tracks
that are options with the "convert tracks" or "copy tracks to ipod" actions

For the record, these 3rd party actions are not part of a default Automator installation. They're available for download here.
Now, you could think of iTunes as basically a very fancy collection of aliases. When you delete a tack in iTunes, it asks if you want to move the files to the trash, or keep them in your music folder. If you select "Keep Files" what you end up with is a bunch of orphans: files that physically exist in your music folder, but are no longer accessible through the iTunes interface. You have, in effect, deleted the alias without deleting the file.
And that, as far as I can tell, is the reasoning behind the two seemingly redundant check boxes in these actions.

  • Do I need to convert my AAC files before burning an audio CD?

I import all my music CDs into iTunes 9 as AAC. When I want to burn a playlist onto a CD as an audio CD, do I have to manually convert my the file into an AIFF format before burning a CD? I think I read that regular CD players cannot play songs that are in AAC format and must be in AIFF format. The CD will be played on a regular car CD player.

Do I need to convert my AAC files before burning an audio CD?
    No.
Simply selecting *Audio CD* in the Burn window is all you need to do.

There has to be another way.
    No, there isn't.
You can use a CD-RW instead of CD-R.
It will not play on most CD-players, but should play fine on your computer.

  • Irregular Bit Rates for Converted/Imported AAC files (iTunes 7.5)?

I have noticed that my recent additions to my iTunes library have irregular bit rates inconsistent with the usual 128 kbps. They range from 121-131 kbps and appear to be randomly generated. This has happened with MP3s and WMAs that I have converted into AACs and CD tracks that I have imported as AACs. My first additions with these problems were on the 19th of November. Before this time I updated my library to iTunes 7.5. None of my previous 2000+ music files (all AAC) which I have been adding successfully for the last 3 years have had this problem and they are almost all (except for a couple at 64 kbps) at 128 kbps. My suspicion is that the new iTunes 7.5 may be the cause of this irregularity.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Difference between AAC and m4a files, converting from AAC to useable format

Does anyone know the difference between AAC and m4a files? iTunes has an option to use an AAC encoder to compress CD files, but this creates an m4a file not an AAC file. I just got some actual AAC files and iTunes cannot read these, is there a way to convert from AAC to a format that iTunes recognizes? Thanks

iTunes uses AAC data wrapped in an MPEG 4 container file. If you got some *.AAC files, and they're just raw AAC files, then you need to wrap them in an MPEG 4 container. The only way I know to do this is using the foobar 2000 program. You can find more information at http://www.hydrogenaudio.org and http://www.foobar2000.org

  • Is there a way to make the AAC music files smaller?

A while ago the AAC music files seemed to double, I want to save room on my computer so I've been changing all my songs to the mp3 setting instead, but I would like to go back to AAC, but they are way to big. Does anyone know how to make them smaller?

Go to iTunes>Preferences, click the 'Import Settings' button: choose the 'AAC' encoder in the top menu, set the second menu to 'Custom' and choose your bitrate.
Now close Preferences. Now go to the 'Music' section in iTunes. Select all the songs you want to convert. From the 'Advanced' menu choose 'Create AAC Version'. Copies of the selected songs will be made as AAC files. You can drag these out to the Desktop or a folder and delete them from iTunes, or delete the MP3 versions.
However note that if you have moved to MP3 you have already degraded the quality, and while you can make the files a good deal smaller doing so will degrade it further. You would need to experiment so you can balance degradation of quality agains file size.

  • How can I convert an outlook pst file to mac mail without using a windows based computer

I recently bought the new iMac as my older Windows based computer crashed with a bad motherboard.  I have been trying to find a way to convert Outlook 2007 pst files to Mac Mail without the need to use a Windows based computer since all I have now is a Mac.  I have the copies of the pst files on my Mac, so I am looking for the most efficient way to convert them to the format that I can then open them in the Mac Mail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - thanks for the instructions but where do you get the option for Quicktime. If I do File - Export I only get the options for File name, place and size but no option that allows to select quicktime:-(

  • Converting Samsung vp-hmx20c files for final cut pro

    Hey
Ive got a samsung vp-hmx20c hd video camera and have recorded files in 1080/25p and 1080/50i.
Im trying to convert them for editing in FCP but everytime i convert to something different playback is flickery and lags in both FCP and quicktime.
Im using a Macbook pro intel core duo 2.2ghz with 2gb ram.
Just wanting to know what the best way to convert the files and what i should be converting them to?
    Files info from Quicktime is
    Format: H.264, 1920 x 1080, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 50
    Data Rate: 14.54 Mbit/s
    Current Size: 1440 x 810 pixels
    Cheers

    Use ProRes 422.
Is there any benefit of compressor or streamclip?
MPEG Streamclip is possibly a little less complicated to set up than Compressor.
I have a tutorial for it [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]. Just substitute ProRes instead of the DV codec in the article.

  • My goal: "convert into pdf" -- the file is instantly saved with the same name as pdf. feasible?

    Good evening dear experts,
i use Adobe Acrobat 9 pro extend to convert word, ppt, jepgs etc. into pdfs.
    No if i
    1) convert a ppt into a pdf: it asks --> "save as" --> converts --> opens the file
    2) convert a jpeg into a pdf: it instantly --> opens the file as pdf --> i need to save it manual under "save as"
In both cases i want to
my goal: "convert into pdf" --> the file is instantly saved with the same name as pdf
WITHOUT asking me "save as" + "opening of the file".
Is the possible, and if yes, HOW ?
A fast answer is very very much appreciated, for i have to convert hundreds of files tonight in order to get it into 1 pdf
    Thx and greetings from Germany,
    Julia

    We are nearly there!
A] - righclick "convert-to-method": @Bill: thx again, your approach worked for ppt, doc-files etc.
    2 problems:
    1) exception: for jpegs/bmps it doesn't work (the file is still opened after conversion, strange).
    2) the output-folder. it only accepts the standard "output-folder documents/*.pdf" (which is a step further but not my end-goal). If i choose another output-folder via "browse", this setting is NOT SAVED (even after clicking on "accept" + "ok").
my goal: the the file should be automatically saved in THE SAME folder the original file is in (seems that can't be achieved and the standard folder is the only thing where to convert in?).
Personal background for understanding: i have many folders with several ppts in it. Once i send it out to a customer, i always have to convert it into a pdf. thats why i want to save time (i know that i can convert it directly + send per mail, but i want an up-to-date copy of the pdf in the folder as well).
    B] - "the automated solution"- @Sandeep:
i just watched your link http://tv.adobe.com/watch/acrobat-tips-and-tricks/automating-tasks-in-acrobat/
about batch processing and i think its really helpful if i want to convert ALL of the files in one folder.
1 question regarding this: are the subfolders also affected?
As i understood from the video, i choose 1 "watched folder" and a "destination folder" (can be the same). E.g i have 1 big folder "designs" with many subfolders. I create a batch converting ppts to pdf to "the same folder" Once i run my batch, it converts ppts in the chosen folder "designs" + all subfolders into the same folder, right?
If this is the case, i get too many pdfs, for i only need the latest ppt-version to be converted (copies of old ppts are also in the files) ;(.
Do you have an idea how can i solve this?
Now we are very near to the end-solution of my goal:
i need this option "to the same folder" in my general settings when i convert a file via right-click. ATM it only works with the standard-folder documents/*.pdf
In A], my files are now instantly saved with the same name in 1 specific folder. I would be completely happy, if this folder would be alwys the same as the one with the original file (and not 1 specific folder)
2nd problem with a]: it does not apply to picture files (bmp, jpegs..)
So if we could solve this, i would be a completely happy girl
Guys, you are great, thx again for the whole struggle with my concerns!!
