Converting to AAC crashes itunes 7.4.3.1

So upon launching itunes this evening, I was prompted to update to the newest version. Now I am running 7.4.3.1 and every time I try to import a new track (WMA with DO DRM, I repeat, NO COPY PROTECTION) the conversion to AAC causes itunes to crash. I can usually convert one song, and then the second song causes the failure and I can only convert another song after I reboot my machine, and then its the same deal - one song then crash. Anyone else having this problem? How can I revert back to the previous version? I can't find it anywhere...

If you can find the files in your iTunes Muisc folder, you should be able to get them all back by simply adding you iTunes Music folder to iTunes with File>>Add folder to library.
This will leave you with the dead tracks. I would recommend one of Robert Jacobson's scripts to get rid of them, but the site seems to be down.
Here is the link, but it is not working:
http://home.comcast.net/~teridon73/itunesscripts/
There is another way which is more involved which involves creating two playlists. I can give you that if you like.

  • Irregular Bit Rates for Converted/Imported AAC files (iTunes 7.5)?

I have noticed that my recent additions to my iTunes library have irregular bit rates inconsistent with the usual 128 kbps. They range from 121-131 kbps and appear to be randomly generated. This has happened with MP3s and WMAs that I have converted into AACs and CD tracks that I have imported as AACs. My first additions with these problems were on the 19th of November. Before this time I updated my library to iTunes 7.5. None of my previous 2000+ music files (all AAC) which I have been adding successfully for the last 3 years have had this problem and they are almost all (except for a couple at 64 kbps) at 128 kbps. My suspicion is that the new iTunes 7.5 may be the cause of this irregularity.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I found a past thread related to this issue. No Need to reply

  • Nero aac crashing itunes 10.1.1.4

I had a lot of songs ripped via Nero prior to moving to iTunes. I'm running up against two issues with Nero-encoded songs:
    - I'm running airtunes, the nero-encoded songs will not play on any of my remote devices via airport express devices (the songs play on my local machine)
    - certain nero-encoded songs cause itunes to crash. I've noticed that songs encoded with the 2.6.x version of aac cause the crash, so far songs encoded with 3.2.x version do not.
I'm trying to go back & re-import songs that I find, but I don't think there is a way to do a search to find songs that are not encoded by some version of iTunes.
Until I loaded 10.1.1.4, I just had the first issue, annoying but not unbearable. Now that the thing crashes every few songs, very annoying.
Any hints (other than 'find & re-rip every nero-encoded song'...) much appreciated.

I have this issue as well. I have an iPhone 3G 16GB, just updated to the latest iTunes and 4.2.1 firmware. I'm on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I've spend like 1,5 hours total reorganizing apps, all for nothing.

  • Can't Create or Convert top AAC or MP3 in 10

Another big bug in iTunes 10. I have a .mov audio file that I wan't to convert into an AAC file. When I go through the normal process of choosing "Create AAC version" in the advanced menu I get a Unknown Error occurred message (-4).
Here's the weird thing, the Advanced menu has the phrasing "Create AAC version" But if I type the word "convert" in the help menu search field, then it shows the advanced menu with the phrasing "Convert to AAC."
iTunes 10 was NOT ready for release.

What the **** ? Can you stop to say bullshits ? It's a bug, a problem to fix. The problem it's not that u don't use real 1080p videos, trust me. I have the same problems and i use 1080p videos, from my Reflex or from my camera.  And on the internet, it's full of users that have the same problem, like us.
And wanna know something realy funny? If you create a new project, then a new video, sometimes it works in 1080p, other times only in 720p, and it's decided random, even if u don't important anything, if u create a new video, then u click on it, you can read ' 1080 ' - ' 720 ' - 480 '  it depends by the mood of the program lol.  It's such a bug, that i hope, developers will fix.

  • ITunes 10.7.0.21 (and earlier) on Windows 7 64bit crashes when converting to AAC

iTunes crashes very consistently whenever I try to convert songs to AAC format.  Sometimes I can get one or two songs to convert before it crashes, sometimes it's on the first song.
I have had this problem for over a year now, on every version of iTunes since I first installed it.  I have tried reinstalling iTunes over itself, uninstalling it and installing it again, etc.  I've been through Google and Apple Support Communities multiple times and none of the suggestions have helped.
I am hoping someone has had this problem and found a solution that they can share with me.

I had the same problem.  New iPhone 5, had to install iTunes 10.7 on windows 7 64 bit.  The install worked, but it crashed immediatly after startup (no window, nothing.)  I tried repairing the install, and still nothing.  When I read the post above, I saw that it was Quicktime related, and remembered I was also prompted to upgrade Quicktime too, which I chose NOT to do.  So I went back and upgraded quicktime.. and VOILA.. it WORKS.  iTunes now runs, and I'm in the middle of restoring my old iPhone to my new one.  (fingers crossed)

  • Convert to AAC causes instant crash

All of a sudden I can't use the Convert to AAC command to import songs, or even convert imported songs from AIFF. Every time I select a song, whether from a CD or from files copied to the iTunes Library as AIFF files, and select the Convert to AAC option from the menu, it instantly causes iTunes to crash and disappear. I've been importing songs this way for years. And converting all my music from enormous AIFF files to aac format this way. Suddenly I can't.
What's going on? What do I have to do to get this function back? Is there a preference file I need to throw away, or should I completely re-install iTunes?
    Mac G4, Tiger OS X 10.4.10
    iTunes 6.0.4
    null

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried trashing those two files, but it didn't fix it. The same thing is still happening. What could possibly be wrong? Could the external drive the files are saved to have become corrupt in some way? Existing songs still play, and I can copy files to it manually. It's just the convert to AAC function that seems to be haywire, at this point.
For what it's worth, the crash report is below:

  • If I compress my iTunes library by converting to 'AAC' will the resulting music still be of CD quality or higher?

I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere but I am new here and a bit confused by file formats. Basically all of my music existed as MP3 files of 320kbps on my computer. I imported them all to itunes. I have read that if I use the 'convert to AAC' feature in iTunes I will end up with music of the same quality but save a lot of memory as the AAC files are smaller. Other comments imply that would be a pointless move and that the resulting audio quality will be poorer because I'd be converting 'lossy' to 'lossy'-this doesn't mean anything to me lol.
Basically I want all my music to be of CD quality or better. With that in mind, is it worthwhile me converting all my 320kbps songs to this 'AAC' version or not? If the advantages/disadvantages of this feature could be stated that would also be appreciated!
    Thanks

    Rob,
Both AAC and MP3 are less than CD quality.  There is no conversion you can do that will raise them to CD quality.  The person who told you it was "pontless" was correct.
If you want CD quality music, you can go back to the original CDs and re-rip using one of the "lossless" formats:  WAV, AIFF, or Apple Lossless.
On the other hand, if your current MP3/320 music sounds good, you may want to leave it alone.  Besides people with audiophile equipment and well-controlled listening conditions, most people do not notice a difference.

  • How to convert .MP3 files into .AAC with iTunes 10.5.2

Im running a Mac OS X 10.5.8, and my iTunes version is 10.5.2.
I want to convert .MP3 files into .AAC using iTunes, but no option is given for me. What should I do?

im not going to change all my songs into AAC, I was experiementing around with making ringtones for my iphone. I can open a song in Garageband, and export it as an AAC file to my itunes, but it is very annoying. I remember older versions of itunes having a "Convert to AAC" option, but i can't find it anymore on this current version of itunes.
Basically, I want to convert a couple songs into AAC to create ringtones out of them.

  • Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC?

Most of my mp3s are not normalized. I want to normalize these tracks before converting them to AAC. Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC? Or do i need to normalize my mp3s first, then convert them to AAC? Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by "normalize"? Do you mean leveling the volume?
iTunes uses the soundcheck feature to do this. It doesn't automatically happen when you convert a song to a different file type.
Apply it in iTunes using the edit/preferences/playback menu (Windows).
Turn it on on the iPod using the settings/soundcheck/on menu.
After applying it in iTunes, sync your iPod to reflect the changes made.
There are 3rd party programs that do this more effectively (at least in my opinion).
    For Windows there is mp3Gain/aacGain.

  • ITunes convert to AAC cuts track length

    HELP!
    I can't figure this out!
If i have a 320kbps .mp3 or Apple Lossless file and I want to convert it to 256kbps AAC in iTunes.
iTunes then cuts the the track length down dramaticly from i.e. 4.34 min. to only 1.12 min. WHAT?
I looked at my import settings, and everything seems fine. I even tried to reset them to default for good measure, but still the same.
I have included screenshots. Apologies my settings are in danish, but im sure you guys can manage
    I am running iTunes 11.0.5

    Steeze,
Hooray!  Good thing we knew the Danish word for VBR.
    Enjoy the music!

  • Error (-50) while converting songs to AAC in iTunes.

I was converting my songs from mpeg to AAC in the iTunes software (not another application) and found a whole bunch of songs that weren't AAC. So I looked through and found some songs that couldnt convert, with the error message saying, "Error occured while converting the file, "Stand Up." An unknown error occured (-50)." Help me

You won't get any benefit converting from MP3 to AAC, both are lossy compression formats and you could even end up with a file of lesser quality by converting from one lossy format to another. Converting to AAC won't add any more information to the MP3 file than is already there. However to convert any type of audio file in iTunes 8 you first have to change your import settings in iTunes>Preferences>General, choose the Import Settings button. Once you have chosen your setting (AAC for instance) highlight the track you want to convert and go to Advanced>Create AAC version.

  • Workflow- iTunes Convert to AAC, copy to ipod & delete converted files

I like to save my music in either Apple Lossless or MP3 (320kb) formats. Unfortunately, when I go to save these onto my ipod mini the files are too large and take up too much space. Id like to try and mimic the software that comes with an ipod shuffle where it can take any file, compress it and copy it to my ipod mini without creating duplicates in my itunes.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to create a workflow to do the following:
    1. Get selected itunes songs (any kind)
    2. Convert to AAC
    3. Copy to ipod
4 Delete the converted files in itunes
Ive looked at some of the automator actions and im a bit confused with the difference of
    - delete original selected tracks -OR-
-delete files of the original selected tracks
that are options with the "convert tracks" or "copy tracks to ipod" actions

For the record, these 3rd party actions are not part of a default Automator installation. They're available for download here.
Now, you could think of iTunes as basically a very fancy collection of aliases. When you delete a tack in iTunes, it asks if you want to move the files to the trash, or keep them in your music folder. If you select "Keep Files" what you end up with is a bunch of orphans: files that physically exist in your music folder, but are no longer accessible through the iTunes interface. You have, in effect, deleted the alias without deleting the file.
And that, as far as I can tell, is the reasoning behind the two seemingly redundant check boxes in these actions.

  • Converting MP3 to AAC in iTunes 8.0.1

I heard about how Walmart is offering MP3 tracks for 94 cents through their MP3 downloading site that is now compatible with Mac OS X, Safari, iPod, and iTunes. The MP3 sites has no restrictions for backups, playlists, computers, etc.
So I'm wondering, how do you convert an MP3 file into AAC file?
    Sincerely,
    Stu "the1macnerd" Carpenter
P.S. MP3 is okay (MPEG-3 Audio layer 1) but AAC (MPEG-4) is a lot better and sounds better in both 128 kbps and 256 kbps, even though 256 kbps takes up twice the space with no DRM, iTunes Plus. However, buying from iTunes Store is a lot better cause Walmart only has 3 million tracks available compared to iTunes' 8.5 million tracks. The iTunes Store is also worth it for people who don't want to buy the edited versions of music because iTunes Store sells both versions, and Walmart is more selective in that they don't sell certain artists based on religious or moral objections, such as Marilyn Manson and other artists.

You won't get any benefit converting from MP3 to AAC, both are lossy compression formats and you could even end up with a file of lesser quality by converting from one lossy format to another. • Converting MP3-AAC and condensing iTunes library

Picked up an iPad 64GB 3G and decided to put my whole iTunes 40GB library on the device . This has caused me to rethink my bit rates to save some room. I tested MP3 vs. AAC sound quality, I'm a professional musician, and the quality difference was barely noticeable. So here are my questions:
    1. Should I convert all of my iTunes files to AAC on both my Macbook Pro and iPad? Does it make a big difference?
    2. If I do this, should I put my iTunes library with MP3's on my Time Capsule prior to conversion?
Thanks as always for the advice.

Most of mine are MPEG, 225 kbps (VBR).
as i said, i would leave them as they are.
I noticed that I have quite a few AIFF files that are huge.
AIFF is a lossless format (as the article above outlines). here it would sense to convert to, say, AAC 256.
edit the article does not mention AIFF so here's a read to peruse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioInterchange_FileFormat
When I converted a sample MPEG to AAC, it saved a good bit of space.
true. but, converting from an already lossy format to an even lossier (e.g. AAC 128) will certainly affect the sound quality. so, it comes down to what is more important to you: space or sound quality. since you are a professional musician, i would expect the latter
what i'm doing is this: CD's are ripped into Apple Lossless files. i move these files to an external HD, then option drag them into iTunes. this will cause iTunes to index the path to the original files but not copy them physically into my main library. with the external connected, i have iTunes convert the Apple Lossless into AAC 256. the AAC's are added to the main library.
for example, if an Apple Lossless files weighs in @ 34,2 MB, the AAC 256 has 9,2 MB only but the sound quality is excellent.

  • After converting mp3s to AAC, does itunes write id3 tags?

I'm on OSX 10.3.9 and running iTunes 5.0.1. I just recently converted a lot of music which was on mp3 format to AAC at 128kbps (saved about 30% space with no loss of quality).
Now when I'm running iTunes, it lags and a small window comes up sporadically saying "Writing ID3 Tags."
Is this for the files I converted to AAC recently, or what's this all about?

out of interest how did you do the conversion ?
Make an intelligent playlist, with the setings, "kind is" - "MPEG"
Check that your "convert to" setting is AAC.
In your MPEG playlist, press command and a keys together (or Edit > Select All, from the menu bar) and choose Advanced > Convert to AAC.
When you are done, use Select All then option and delete keys together in the playlist, to remove the MPEGs from your library.
