Converting to aac

just finished ripping my 700 cd's into itunes using apple lossless (8500 songs = 260 gig)I would like now to convert them to aac to fit on the ipod, is there any harm converting all and leaving everything in the itunes folders, i do want to keep the apple lossless to make compilations cd's (I bought a 500 gig drive just for this purpose so i have plenty of space left for the aac's)

I also found this note on macosxhints.com:

*Smart playlists for lossless and AAC files in iTunes and iPod*
*Tue, Oct 31 '06 at 7:30AM PST • Submitted by reg*
I have ripped all my CDs in Apple Lossless format, so I won't have to rerip them when a new or better codec comes along. I have found many ideas on how to copy all songs into a second iTunes library in and then convert all songs in the copied library to a lossy format such as 192 kbps AAC.
However, with smart playlists, it is possible to create a single iTunes library that is still fairly convenient to use, and that contains both the lossless versions for listening on the big home stereo, and the AAC versions for syncing to the iPod. Here is the setup:
Create the following two playlists:
"Lossless": match all conditions - Kind contains Apple & Kind contains Lossless
"AAC-192": match all conditions - Kind contains AAC & Bit Rate is 192
Now the two main playlists for use on iTunes and the iPod:
"All-Mac": PlayList is not AAC-192
"All-iPod": PlayList is not Lossless
These two playlists are defined by excluding the unwanted versions, so other MP3s and purchased songs will appear in both playlists. (If you want to use the same scheme, but rip to a different bit rate, such as 128 kbps, you will need to set up the corresponding playlist containing the rule "kind does not contain protected".)
Once you have set up these playlists, "Lossless" will contain all your CD-ripped music. If you now set the "Importing" settings in the Advanced tab of iTunes' preferences to AAC and 192 kbps, you can select the Lossless playlist, select all songs, and choose "Convert selection to AAC" in the Advanced menu to create the AAC versions. Once this possibly lengthy process is finished (it can take a few hours, or more, depending on the size of your library), you'll find the iPod versions of all your lossless songs in the "AAC-192" playlist.
Now you have to set up your iPod to only sync the "All-iPod" playlist, and you're reading to listen to your music on the move.
If you now create additional smart playlists, you will have to include a condition "playlist is All-Mac" if the playlist is intended for use in iTunes, or "playlist is All-iPod" if the playlist is intended for use on the iPod. I have started to prefix all my iPod playlists with "i-" to easily identify them.
There are some caveats:
You have to manually keep the AAC versions in sync with your lossless versions: if you add to or modify your Lossless library, you have to manually convert the files to create corresponding AAC versions.
Also, play counts, skip counts, last played times and ratings of lossless and AAC songs are separate, which means you'll have different information for the two different versions of a same song, but this still a fairly straightforward way to manage these two types of files, and, in my opinion, better than using completely separate libraries.
[kirkmc adds: Interestingly, I have an article coming in the December issue of Macworld about this very question. I discuss the process of ripping to lossless to use files as "archives", for the same reason as reg, that is to be able to re-rip to any format at a later date. In my article, however, I discuss using two libraries for the different types of files; since iTunes 7 has built-in multiple library support, and because there are third-party solutions such as Doug Adams' iTunes Library Manager, I prefer the multiple-library solution. But reg's presentation here of using smart playlists is a very good way to do the same thing with a single library. Just make sure you have the necessary disk space!]

  • If I compress my iTunes library by converting to 'AAC' will the resulting music still be of CD quality or higher?

I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere but I am new here and a bit confused by file formats. Basically all of my music existed as MP3 files of 320kbps on my computer. I imported them all to itunes. I have read that if I use the 'convert to AAC' feature in iTunes I will end up with music of the same quality but save a lot of memory as the AAC files are smaller. Other comments imply that would be a pointless move and that the resulting audio quality will be poorer because I'd be converting 'lossy' to 'lossy'-this doesn't mean anything to me lol.
Basically I want all my music to be of CD quality or better. With that in mind, is it worthwhile me converting all my 320kbps songs to this 'AAC' version or not? If the advantages/disadvantages of this feature could be stated that would also be appreciated!
    Thanks

    Rob,
Both AAC and MP3 are less than CD quality.  There is no conversion you can do that will raise them to CD quality.  The person who told you it was "pontless" was correct.
If you want CD quality music, you can go back to the original CDs and re-rip using one of the "lossless" formats:  WAV, AIFF, or Apple Lossless.
On the other hand, if your current MP3/320 music sounds good, you may want to leave it alone.  Besides people with audiophile equipment and well-controlled listening conditions, most people do not notice a difference.

  • Export a playlist (to Desktop or Document Folder.  Convert from AAC to MP3

It seems that in an earlier version of Itunes I was able to export a playlist (a list of song names of a CD I had just burned), and then import that list ito a CD label printing program (Discus, epson;s Print CD). This capability saves a ton of keystrokes and , to me, seems like a fairly simple capability to include in Itunes.
Also I would like to know if there is a way to convert audio (AAC ?) files to MP3 three files (for files that are already in your Itunes library?

    1. You can select a playlist and use File > Library > Export Playlist to get a text file.

  • How do I designate a separate folder for files Converted to AAC?

Can I stop iTunes putting files converted to AAC in the same folder as the original files and thereby forcing (a) me to have to individually "pick them out" and copy them to a separate folder and (b) their names to be changed by adding "1" to the end?
Or is Apple determined to to make playing iTunes store music on Windows Mobile as inconvenient as possible?

Pamela, this is the problem I am having:
Windows Mobile Player (and Touchflo on my HTC) won't play tracks in the format that they download from the iTunes store in.
To make them play on my WM device I have to apply the "Convert to AAC" function in iTunes. This is in itself intruiging because according to GSpot both the input and output files are in exactly the same format and bitrate, except that the output file is slightly shorter. All I know is that WM won't play the input file but will play the output file.
The problem I have is that Convert to AAC puts the output files into the same folder as the input files. It seems to do the same thing with playlists. Consequently, to copy the tracks onto my WM device I have to at some point go through the playlist or folder and manually pick out the "converted tracks". This is what I am trying to avoid. The other small problem is that the file names have an annoying " 1" on the end of them, although I can learn to live with that.

  • Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC?

Most of my mp3s are not normalized. I want to normalize these tracks before converting them to AAC. Does iTunes normalize audio when converting to AAC? Or do i need to normalize my mp3s first, then convert them to AAC? Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by "normalize"? Do you mean leveling the volume?
iTunes uses the soundcheck feature to do this. It doesn't automatically happen when you convert a song to a different file type.
Apply it in iTunes using the edit/preferences/playback menu (Windows).
Turn it on on the iPod using the settings/soundcheck/on menu.
After applying it in iTunes, sync your iPod to reflect the changes made.
There are 3rd party programs that do this more effectively (at least in my opinion).
    For Windows there is mp3Gain/aacGain.

  • Getting a 9041 error when trying to convert to AAC

I'm trying to convert some Apple Lossless songs to AAC and every time I try (different songs) I get "Unknown error occurred (9041).
I was able to drag the song to the desktop, open it in QuickTime and export it as an AAC so the files aren't corrupted.
I'm running Lion and the latest version of iTunes

"I have been able to convert to AAC by first converting to AIFF  and then to AAC. This is a pan though."
    this worked for me.
    thanks.

  • Bug in v11: Convert to AAC from Home Shared lib, same machine

I keep two iTunes libraries on my Mac.  One is high-res [Apple lossless] and is the source for playback on my audio system. The other contains compressed [AAC] versions of the same music and is used on my phone.
Prior to iTunes 11, when I wanted to add music to both libraries, I did this:
    - rip to the disk to Apple Lossless and add it to the HiRes iTunes library. Add album art.
    - Close iTunes then relaunch with the AAC library.
    - [Option key] Advanced menu - Convert to AAC:
    - a File system dialog is presented - select the music from the HiRes library to convert and import.
    Done.
In iTunes 11, the process should be the same except that 'Convert to AAC' now appears at  File - Create New Version.
That would be fine if it worked.
A couple of things have changed:
    - The menu is in a new place with a new name,
    - Convert to AAC no longer presents a File system dialog from which to select the files to convert.
    Tried this:
    - Rip to Apple Lossless and add to the HiRes lib. Close iTunes.
    - Open iTunes with the AAC library.
    - Select the HiRes library in the Library menu.
    - Navigate to the newly imported files - select them.
    - (hold down Option key) File - Convert to AAC
This error message appears in a dialog:
None of the selected files were converted because they could not be found.
To verify that the files can 'be found', I try playing them.  No problem.
    Looks like a bug.
    regards,
    -jg-

I've encoutered the same problem, I think the best thing to do is to let apple know this bug exists throug: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
The only way around it at the moment is to import the original file into the itunes library and then choose 'create aac version' after that you can delete the original file from your itunes library.
If you work with a lot of files at once you can do this easily by setting the library to list view, right click on the header with name, time, etc. select 'kind' and then click on kind in the header. Now your songs are sorted by kind and everything that isn't AAC wil be at the bottom of the list.

  • Convert to AAC causes instant crash

All of a sudden I can't use the Convert to AAC command to import songs, or even convert imported songs from AIFF. Every time I select a song, whether from a CD or from files copied to the iTunes Library as AIFF files, and select the Convert to AAC option from the menu, it instantly causes iTunes to crash and disappear. I've been importing songs this way for years. And converting all my music from enormous AIFF files to aac format this way. Suddenly I can't.
What's going on? What do I have to do to get this function back? Is there a preference file I need to throw away, or should I completely re-install iTunes?
    Mac G4, Tiger OS X 10.4.10
    iTunes 6.0.4
    null

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried trashing those two files, but it didn't fix it. The same thing is still happening. What could possibly be wrong? Could the external drive the files are saved to have become corrupt in some way? Existing songs still play, and I can copy files to it manually. It's just the convert to AAC function that seems to be haywire, at this point.

  • Workflow- iTunes Convert to AAC, copy to ipod & delete converted files

I like to save my music in either Apple Lossless or MP3 (320kb) formats. Unfortunately, when I go to save these onto my ipod mini the files are too large and take up too much space. Id like to try and mimic the software that comes with an ipod shuffle where it can take any file, compress it and copy it to my ipod mini without creating duplicates in my itunes.
Can anyone offer some advice on how to create a workflow to do the following:
    1. Get selected itunes songs (any kind)
    2. Convert to AAC
    3. Copy to ipod
4 Delete the converted files in itunes
Ive looked at some of the automator actions and im a bit confused with the difference of
    - delete original selected tracks -OR-
-delete files of the original selected tracks
that are options with the "convert tracks" or "copy tracks to ipod" actions

For the record, these 3rd party actions are not part of a default Automator installation. They're available for download here.
Now, you could think of iTunes as basically a very fancy collection of aliases. When you delete a tack in iTunes, it asks if you want to move the files to the trash, or keep them in your music folder. If you select "Keep Files" what you end up with is a bunch of orphans: files that physically exist in your music folder, but are no longer accessible through the iTunes interface. You have, in effect, deleted the alias without deleting the file.
And that, as far as I can tell, is the reasoning behind the two seemingly redundant check boxes in these actions.

  • Convert to AAC and replace?

    Hi!
I wonder if it's possible to convert to AAC and replace the mp3 file i converted automatically? I have playlist with thousands of songs i want to convert to save space, but don't want to spend days manually replacing all tracks. Is it anyway to make this automatically?
    Thanks!

OK. If you really want to, note that when you convert, the new file goes into the library. If you want to do a whole playlist, highlight and convert. Then sort your library by "Date Added," and you will see all the newly converted AAC files together. You can highlight and slide them all into the playlist, and delete all the MP3s that were there.
Try it with a few files at a time until you are comfortable with how it works.
Also consider a bigger hard drive.

  • Easiest way to convert to AAC from songs (MP4) already in my Library?

My son has a DSi XL now which has a SD slot and supports music in AAC format only.
My music library is all in MP3, what is the easiest way to convert to AAC, put it in a separate older or separate or easily identifiable in my library (or even delete after putting on SD card).
I'm not bothered on it being top quality audio as I know it will be converting from my MP3s I already have.
    cheers

they will be stored where you have pointed iTunes (preferences > advanced > iTunes media folder location).
also will they delete the current MP3s they are converted from?
    no.
How will i find the AAC versions quickly?
    various options:
    a) sort music by kind
    b) once conversion is done, check your *recently added* smart playlist
    c) create a new smart playlist containing only AAC files (match the following rule > kind/contains/AAC audio file)

  • AIFFs imported, can't convert to AAC

For whatever reason, several hundred AIFFs, which I just ripped directly from my CD collection, apparently cannot be converted to AAC. The option is simply not there. Instead, iTunes wants to convert them to AIFF. But they're already AIFF. If I let iTunes convert one to AIFF, the newly "converted" file still cannot be converted to AAC.
What the heck is going on? I just ripped several hundred tracks two weeks ago and I was able to convert them to AAC. At first, the option was not there.. only "convert to AIFF" like I am seeing now.
I have no idea what I did to enable the option to convert to AAC. As far as I am concerned it should be available right now, but it's not.
What's going on ? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, however I WANT my songs imported to AIFF format. However, I should still be able to convert the AIFFs to AAC. For whatever reason the conversion option being offered is "Convert to AIFF" even though the files are already AIFF (and if I "Get Info" on a song it's clear that even iTunes recognizes that they are AIFF).
Something else needs to be done before the "Convert to AAC" option will appear. I remember I already had this problem when converting a previous batch of AIFFs to AAC. I simply don't remember what I did ... if anything ... it seems to be simply a program glitch.
    Any ideas?

  • Do I need to convert my AAC files before burning an audio CD?

I import all my music CDs into iTunes 9 as AAC. When I want to burn a playlist onto a CD as an audio CD, do I have to manually convert my the file into an AIFF format before burning a CD? I think I read that regular CD players cannot play songs that are in AAC format and must be in AIFF format. The CD will be played on a regular car CD player.

    No.
Simply selecting *Audio CD* in the Burn window is all you need to do.

  • How do i convert protected AAC files to MP3 files on a Mac

How do i convert protected AAC files to MP3 files on a Mac?

There has to be another way.
    No, there isn't.
You can use a CD-RW instead of CD-R.
It will not play on most CD-players, but should play fine on your computer.
