Converting to Apple Lossless and making playlist?

I've noticed that in order to convert Wav files that are already on my computer to Apple Lossless I need to do this in the library and it can't be done in a playlist. The problem is that if I try and create a playlist from the new lossless files I can't. Itunes creates the playlist from the origonal WAV files. Is there now way to bring a wav playlist into Itunes and make it into a apple lossless playlist?
Gerry

Yes, Apple Lossless is roughly 45% smaller than pure WAV PCM files.
Once converted, iTunes will place the Apple Lossless files in your music directory, under the correct artist/album folder. There should be new entries in your library that refer to the Apple Lossless files, and the old ones that refer to the WAV files should remain untouched. If you check your "Added recently" playlist, or sort your library using the "Date Added" category, you should find the Apple Lossless entries.

  • Head Spinning on Creating a Apple Lossless and AAC libraries

I am contemplating archiving all my CDs to an Applelossless library using iTunes. Before doing so, I have some questions. We are in a WIN XP environment.
    1) How do I convert an Apple Lossless album to AAC format with all the album info in tack to a separate iTunes library?
    2) How do I give multiple WIN XP users access to this single AAC library via iTunes to load their iPod or buy music for this single AAC library?
    3) If I add CDs to the Apple Lossless library using iTunes, is there a way to keep the AAC library automatically in sync?
Is there a better approach I should consider?
    Thanks for the help experts!

To set up another library in the same Windows user account hold down the shift key when starting iTunes. In one library have your lossless files. In the other library have the AAC files. In the second library import the lossless files with settings set to convert to AAC. To allow multiple users access to the same file store the library where they both have access. Each library is independent, changes in one are not made in the other automatically. You will have to add to one in lossless, go to other library then import the files there.
Better approach. Maybe. I think it is a waste of space to use Apple lossless. My hearing can't tell from AAC 192k from CD. So I just use AAC at 192k or 160k. Even lower for audiobooks.

  • Converting from Apple Lossless to MP3: loss of quality?

    Hi,
I have made the "mistake" of importing dozens and dozens of CD's using the Apple Lossless encoder. Nothing bad about the encoder, on the contrary. But my iPod is now full.
Is there a way I can convert all these tracks to MP3? Will there be a loss of quality from the re-conversion beside the one inherent to MP3? (since we are not starting from the original CD) And will I have to re-create my playlists?
Mmmhhh... doesn't sound too good, right?
    Xavier.

Go to Preferences in iTunes. Then go to advanced and importing. In importing change the import using to MP3 encoder.
Quit out of this menu. On the top tool bar you have Advanced and under here you have convert option. If you select the songs that you want to convert and use this convert option they will go to MP3s

  • Itunes with Apple Lossless and mp3

I have a Mac mini with iTunes.
How can I configure and the system such that:
    - I want to play HD music in my living room so I will have Apple Lossless tracks for this purpose.
    - I still want the same tracks in MP3 (because it takes much less space) and sync those on my iPhone.
Obviously I can have different playlists for the HD tracks and MP3 tracks.
Is there an application that can automatically discover newly imported HD tracks and convert them in MP3?
Is there a way to sync those MP3 (wired and wirelessly) to different iPhone/iPod without having them in iTunes?
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

It doesn't do MP3, but iTunes has the abilty to automatically convert higher bit rate tracks, such as ALAC, to 128/192/256 AAC files on sync. There is no reason to keep multiple copies of the same track.
Just connect your iPhone and select it in iTunes. Click the Summary tab and select the option to "convert higher..." then select the bit rate you want.
Or, you can use one the new cloud syncing services such as iTunes Match, Google Music or Amazon Cloud Play. All these services will convert or "match" ALAC files to either 256 AAC/MP3.

  • Confused about Apple Lossless and m4a files

I have Itunes set to import music files from CD in the "Apple Lossless Encoder" format. I notice that it makes
.m4a files. Are these in fact lossless? Are these mpeg4 files? Is mpeg4 lossless?
    Thanks,
    John

    John,
if you get info on a file it will tell you what kind it is, in this case Apple lossless. The difference between importing a song this way and regular AAC or MP3 is size. Lossless is roughly 10MB per minute, AAC and MP3 is about 1MB per minute, so a 4 minute song lossless is about 40MB compared to 4MB.
By importing a song as lossless, you don't lose any of the song, whereas AAC and MP3 throw out the stuff you don't really need to hear and enjoy the song, thus the reason it is alot smaller in size. You can increase the bit rate that you import your songs in using AAC or MP3, making them larger, but not by much.

  • What does Match do to Apple Lossless and AIFF?

I have all my music imported as Apple Lossless.  Will I lose quality if I use Match?
    Thanks,
    Ken

Yes, that it what I said :-)
Itunes temporarily converts the file to 256 in order to upload it to Icloud but leaves the ALAC file on your computer HD.
When you play back from your computer where the original file is stored you play the ALAC file.
If you download the file to another Idevice from Icloud you will of course have a 256 file, which should be quite adequate for on the go listening.
EG, When I stream to my hi end home stereo useing squeezebox server through Itunes on my Imac it streams full ALAC files, not 256 files. And I am talking about files  which were uploaded to Icloud, NOT matched.
I was very careful to verify this before uploading more than a few files.
    I don't want 256 streaming to a 70,000.00 system :-)

  • Moving to Apple lossless, impact on playlists

I am considering a move to Apple Lossless (instead of mp3). My concern is that I have a lot of playlists that specifically address the mp3 file names. This brings me to my questions: (1) Is there any way to swap the Apple Lossless format files for the mp3 ones (identical song), leaving all playlists with updated file addresses? (2) If not, is there a way to search playlists to see where a particular song is located? I could then manually replace each song before deleting the mp3). (3) Any other suggestions on how I can make this swap between mp3 and Apple lossless files?

There are two types of playlist that iTunes uses.
Ones where you drag tacks manually in to them
Ones where you define rules so that tracks are automatically added to them - so called 'smart playlists'.
For the former, if you re-import your tracks in a different format (in this case Apple Lossless) you would have to drag them again to the playlist and remove the old MP3 ones from the playlist. The later is easy as you can sort by 'kind' and select all the MP3 tracks in one go and remove them from the playlist.
For the 'smart' playlist, you can check the rules and they may already pickup the desired tracks, or you can edit the rules. For example your rule might say something like -
for this playlist add all tracks of Genre 'Country and Western'
you could add an additional rule to this to make
for this playlist add all tracks of Genre 'Country and Western'
and that are of kind 'Apple Lossless'

  • Dropouts 60GB iPod with apple lossless and equalizer

I have noticed on the new 60GB 5th Generation iPod that some songs have a consistent early dropout under the following conditions:
    - apple lossless format
    - equalizer on, any setting
    - skip to the new song, or continue from last song (does not do it if restart an song already playing)
I assume it is a buffer or equlizer bug, has anyone else had a similar problem?

It doesn't do MP3, but iTunes has the abilty to automatically convert higher bit rate tracks, such as ALAC, to 128/192/256 AAC files on sync. There is no reason to keep multiple copies of the same track.

  • Why is my file "Apple Lossless" and not ACC or Mpeg?!?!?!?!  HELP!!!

Ok, so this is the first time this is happening to CDs I'm importing. These last couple I have done are coming up as "Apple Lossless", whatever that means! And not the ACC or MPEG formats. How do I put it in those and what the heck is happening that my newest imported songs are going directly to this lossless thing?!
    -Linda

If the default encoder for iTunes has been set to Apple Lossless, songs added to iTunes will be added in this format; you can change this by following these instructions. The procedure is the same for all systems running iTunes 5.0 and newer. To transfer the Apple Lossless files to the iPod shuffle, look at this page.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC and making a DVD

I have a couple of .avi files, some are in PAL and others in NTSC, I wanna make a DVD in NTSC mode, How can I convert the files?

    Hi
This is not easy and You need other programs to do this.
    .avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.
This may work - I had great problems to get .avi into anything usably.
*PAL to NTSC or other way*
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

  • Apple's lossless and WAV

I've seen a number of postings declaring that Apple's lossless format is identical in quality (but of course smaller in size) compared with WAV.
However, I haven't seen any links to any official statements by Apple or trusted third-party sources on this issue.
I'm not saying that such official data/proof doesn't exist. I just don't know where to find it. Doing a Google search doesn't turn up too much -- just lots more people saying that which is noted above (but without any proof).
Anybody have any links they would care to share...?

Apple Lossless can support 24-bit audio and 5.1 surround. However iTunes only has one setting which is 'automatic'. What automatic means here is 'exactly the same as the original CD' which as already mentioned is 16 bit 44.1KHz stereo for Audio CDs.
iTunes does not itself support SACD or DVD-A (DVD Audio) discs (neither does WMP). In theory since Apple Lossless supports 24-bit and 5.1, suitable software could convert SACD or even DVD-A to Apple Lossless and still remain lossless.
There have been tests done to rip a source (CD) to Apple Lossless and other lossless formats and then convert back to the original format and compare the bits before and after and these have shown that Apple Lossless is genuinely a lossless format, just like the others. As was mentioned some claims are made that WAV or some other specific lossless format sounds better than some other lossless format. I suspect many of these are due to bias (and knowing what format they are listening to) but there are also some alleged claims of doing true blind tests and still 'proving' one lossless format is better than another.
Personally if we believe these claims, I do not believe it is down to the format itself, but more likely down to (in most cases) the conversion back to analog for playback (files maybe digital, but sound waves are analog) and possibly some software behaviour that deliberately or accidently makes changes (e.g. 'sound-levelling', EQ settings, etc.).
Frankly, I regard people who fuss over this (minute) level of alleged difference as suffering from obsessive-compulsive tendencies, they probably also spend hundreds of pounds on special power, HDMI, and speaker cables.
Many massively long threads have been spawned by arguments over perceived audio differences between lossless formats. This poster http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=70950&view=findpost&p =626748 came up with the same approach I thought of (before seeing his) for what should be a scientifically acceptable testing methodology. Basically...
    Input File->Application->SPDIF output->SPDIF input->Application->Output File
If the Output File produced for each different lossless format used as an Input File is shown to be bit level identical, then clearly there is no difference and each lossless format is identical. The tester (Alex B) did this on a single computer (using audio loopback) and using two computers and produced identical results each time.
The other scientific approach would be to have a professional sound recording room and waveform analysers, i.e. something us mere mortals do not have access to.
