Converting to Appleworks 6

Hello,
I had a question about how to convert the Clarisworks dictionary to Appleworks.
I've done a data transfer for a client from a imac g3 (running Os 9.2.2) to an imac G4 running Os 10.3.7. I am able to get the clarisworks saved documents over to the new computer but can not get the dictionary to come up with their saved dictionary data. When I bring up the dictionary now everything is at default and the learn button is greyed out. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
AppleWorks 6 has a different dictionary format than previous versions of AppleWorks & ClarisWorks. A quick search of AppleWorks help or AppleWorks support files online for dictionary returns Converting an AppleWorks 5 User Dictionary. Remember that the AppleWorks 6 dictionary has a much smaller word limit than previous versions, too, only 2883 words.

Does anyone know how can I convert an Applework document to .doc (Windows)?

You can save an AppleWorks word processing document as Word using File > Save As… You will need to add the .doc extension as AppleWorks won't do it for you.
If you don't see Word as an option in the file type drop-down menu you likely have moved the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder and/or deleted the support folders, especially the AppleWorks Essentials folder where the translators reside.

What database program will convert my Appleworks DB for use on Intel platform?

Yes, you just need the appleworks folder from applications.
However, whether or not this is strictly legal is another question entirely, I'm afraid, unless you are planning to remove appleworks from your computer. You could just buy her her own copy of Appleworks, too.

  • How to convert Graphic-Converter of AppleWorks in Pages?

    Hi
I d'like to upgrade to OS X Lion. I know, that I can open AppleWorks-Docs with Pages. But I have made many docs with the Graphic-Converter (fractions, roots etc.). These elements cannot be edited by Pages.
    What can I do?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Thanks, Roger
I ment the Equation Editor. I tried to write a fraction in the Equation Editor of AppleWorks and to paste it into a Pages-Doc, but I made it with OS 6. It worked, but  it's not possible to edit the fraction anymore. I don't know, if the Equation Editor will still run in OS 7. I could use the Equation Editor of Word. So I have at least the possibility to create new terms.
Or do you see an other possibility?
    Kind regards
    Christian

  • Converting from Appleworks Database to ?

Others have asked this question, but I’m not seeing any definitive answers. I see that some people are having no problem with their Appleworks docs after converting to Leopard, others are having big problems. I don’t want to take any chances, seeing that Appleworks is on its way out anyway, and I’ll have to face this sooner or later. What can I do with my Appleworks database? Is there any way to convert it over to iWork, Office, or something else? If not, I’ll just have to take a few days “off” to do it all by hand and create an entirely new database...but what would be the best program to do that, and be able to do all that the Appleworks database can do?

There just isn't a replacement for AppleWorks' database that can do even half of what AppleWorks does. I've been moving most of my databases to Numbers. I can sort & filter the data but there is no way to merge anything with Pages. I've left feedback for both Pages & Numbers asking for this functionality.
To move the data to Numbers, I view my AppleWorks database as a list, select all, copy & then paste into a Numbers table. This retains any formatting I've applied.

  • Can anyone convert an AppleWorks file for me?

I am desperate to open an old AppleWorks spreadsheet file (.cwk).  Is there anyone out there who still has a running copy of Appleworks that I can send my file to and have convert it to something Numbers or Excel can open and send back to me?
I believe this is the only way I am ever going to get the data from this old file.  I've tried everything else.  Much thanks!!!

    Wil,
File opened with no trouble in version 2.3. I sent you the Numbers file by return email. You will have to tell me if it looks as you expected it to.

  • How do I convert an AppleWorks document to a PDF file?

How do I save the document as a PDF file? Whether it's the entire or a selected part of it. I did it a while ago and forgot.
Yes, I have tried the Appleworks help but didn't find it. It's gotta be simple.
    G5 2.3 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You use the Print dialog to save as a PDF. Essentially, it prints to a file. Set up to print as usual & then, in the lower left of the dialog box click the Save as PDF button.

  • How can I convert my Appleworks 6 word processor and spreadsheets files to Pages and Numbers for OS 10.9?

My disc drive on my 6 year old MacBook died.  I bought an iMac with OS10.9, but it will not allow me to open Appleworks files from my backup drive.  Does anyone know of a method to transfer or open  Appleworks 6 files in Pages or Numbers for OS 10.9?  I need those files.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    > It coped much better with my Draw documents than the older version
Normally, I have added many functionnalities, retrieving the bitmap, gradient, ... But there remains some problem when a group/frame shares some shapes and a picture or when a shape crosses differents pages, the result can be become bad, ...
    > a number of lines missing on page 3
I suspect there are here, ie. if you select in page 3 the big gray square with two ellipses and remove it, there seem to reappear ( I do not know why this square insists to hide the other shapes even when I put it in background, ....)
    > the lines are very much thicker than they should be
All objects are thicker than they should be, mainly because I need to create a embedded Odg for each shapes. This will change in LibreOffice 4.3 because we have added in the parent library of libmwaw, functions to create shapes directly ; at least for line, rectangle, ellipse, probably not for other shapes...
    > I can add that to my page when it gets out of beta, (Perhaps you could announce it in this forum as it is relevant to AW and I don't want to keep checking the LO website.)
Ok, I will try to add a message when LibreOffice 4.2 will appear ( note: as I only write an extension used in LibreOffice, I also do not keep checking the LO website, I only check now and then that all is working ).

  • Automated convertion of AppleWorks files to more recent format?

    Hi,
I had used AppleWorks extensively in the past and still have masses of documents in AW format (both the most recent one and the previous one). The bulk of those files are text with limited formatting, but some have a layout.
Is there a way to automatise the conversion of those documents to a more recent format such as Apple Page or Microsoft Word? Something using AppleScript maybe? I'm getting worried that if I keep those files in AW format there will soon come a time where I won't be able to read them anymore; already the AW5 files cannot be read by Page, meaning I'm dependant on AppleWorks 6 running in Rosetta to read them. Who said preserving documents in the digital era would be easy?
I'm a CS student, so solutions requiring a bit of programming are fine.

    Hello
I made some changes so it would be easier to use it in a more complex script.
    In AW6 Preferences > General > Files ,
    uncheck three checkboxes:
    Old Version Alert
    [v6.0] Suffix
    suffix .cwk
    property zeDoc : "Macintosh HD:Users:yvankoenig:Desktop:téléphones5.cwk"
(* this is a sample, use your prefered protocol to define the file(s) to transfer. *)
    property ZeFolder : ""
set ZeFolder to (path to desktop) as text
    my saveAsPages(zeDoc)
    on saveAsPages(docAW)
copy (read file docAW for 1) to signat
if signat < (ASCII character 6) then my saveAsAW6(docAW) (* was AW 5 or older *)
    tell application "Finder"
copy docAW as alias to docAW_
    copy docAW_'s {name, name extension} to {zeName, zeExt}
    if zeExt is "" then
    copy zeName to shortName
    else
copy text 1 thru (-(2 + (zeExt's length))) of zeName to shortName
    end if
    end tell -- Finder
copy (ZeFolder & shortName & ".Pages") to destDoc
    tell application "Pages"
    open docAW_
save document 1 as Unicode text in file destDoc
    end tell -- Pages
    end saveAsPages
    on saveAsAW6(docAW5)
    tell application "AppleWorks 6"
    activate
    open file docAW5
copy name of document 1 to nomAW5
    tell document 1
    save nomAW5
    end tell -- document
    close document 1
    (* docAW5 is now an AW6 document *)
    end tell -- Appleworks
    end saveAsAW6

AppleWorks 6.2.9 on my Mac offers these file format options (for word processing documents) in the popup menu at the lower left of the Save As dialogue:
The Word translators come from DataViz, and were supplied with some versions of AppleWorks 6.

  • Converting database from appleworks

    Hello
I have been finding that appleworks no longer seems to function, so I have gradually been transfering my wordprocessing and spreadsheet documents to iWork. I now need to convert my appleworks database to another format, because, as I mentioned, Applework does not seem to function properly any more.
I know almost nothing about computers, but I cant get my head round the fact that neither do the people who produce software
what I am referring to is the childishly ludicrous situation whereby Apple have created iWork without a database application. - surely it could and should have been foreseen that this would eventually get Appleworks users into a very difficult situation i.e. they would have built databases which could not be readily converted to another format.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but wasn't it a bit daft for iWork to have wordprocessing and spreadsheet apps but no database?
    Regards

You cannot open an Appleworks database in anything else (and I agree about iWork). You can export a database as tab or comma delimited text (of course you lose all formatting and any calculation fields) but obviously you need to use AW to do that.
However it should work perfectly well on Tiger or Leopard. There are steps you can take to get it to work; please see the second post in this thread:

  • Why does iDisk and Yahoo Briefcase convert Word to Appleworks?

I'm able to download these stored documents and save them as Word files, but I'm wondering why these two storage websites convert doc files to Appleworks?
    Thanks!

It's unlikely that the files are being converted to AppleWorks as that would involve translation & Word just doesn't have translators to save files as AppleWorks. I think that your Mac has "decided" that the default program to open these files is AppleWorks.
This is not an uncommon problem & the program the OS "assigns" to a file type varies. It usually happens after a system update & not using Disk Utility to repair permissions especially if the files don't have an extension or extensions aren't displayed. Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Word. If Word is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Word application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Word. Then use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

  • Appleworks 6 Docs won't open in Pages

We just got the new intel G5, and are wondering if we made a mistake, and should just get an old G5.
I burned a disc of my files from work- Appleworks word processing docs almost exclusively, and all recently converted to Appleworks 6- and they will not open in Pages.
We have Macs at work- all running OS 9.2- and I need to be able to use my files from work at home, or there is little point to having the computer. I'm sure I can import the actual text by using email and cut and paste, but that's a lot more work than I feel should be required.
If anyone could offer any help, it would be much appreciated. At this point, we're inclined to pack the darn thing back in its box and send it back.

If you go with the copy-over method, you need to copy the AppleWorks 6 folder that has been installed on another Mac.
Any version of AppleWorks released after the end of 2001 has an OS X installer, approximately version 6.2.2. Before then, it was an OS 8/9 installer, so it needs Classic, which Intel Macs can't do. For stability in OS X, you should use AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, Definitely not 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy!
Yes, once you get AppleWorks 6 installed, your files should open. You might want to take a look at a user tip I wrote, AppleWorks 6 won't open my AW 5 files. Even though the title says AppleWorks 5, it applies to moving AppleWorks 6 files from one Mac to another.
