Converting to Epub format

Hi,
I am preparing to publish my book on iBooks. What I wrote is on Word documents and also on PDFs. Converting them to Epub was so expensive to outsource so I want to try it myself.
My question is, what is the best Epub software can use on my Mac? There are some options on the Mac app store but I wasn't sure which one is a complete package for someone who will publish a book on iBooks.
I would appreciate your help for finding a sofware that can achieve everything needed for iBook standards.
Thanks

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply. So if I buy Pages is it going to provide everything needed to publish a book on iBook Store? e.g. Am I going to be able create an ePub file with my book cover on it?
If you say that a casual user like me can handle Pages for this task it would be great as it is not that expensive.
I know Indesign, it is very expensive and professional, dont think it would be suitable for me.
One last thing: If I use iBooks Author than I had to publish my book ONLY in the iBook store, right? I guess that is why you did not recomment it to me.
Thank you.

  • I have children's books in Japanese, Chinese and Arabic that I am trying to convert into epub formats that ibookstore will accept. My source docs are in ms word or pdf format. I want to use ibooks author for this purpose. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Is there an easy way of importing the children's books into ibooks author? There is an image on every other page. The books has to be in fixed layout format.
Any help will be sincerely appreciated. I understand that ibookstore will accept only epub 3.0 formats for Japanese titles. As I stated earlier, my objective is to make those language books available in ibookstore.

The books has to be in fixed layout format
If you mean keep the same as original, I wouldn't expect to retain that, sorry.
You'd be obligated to either copy/paste in sections/blocks of text, images, etc. or insert from Pages/Word, but either way you can expect to have to rework towards whatever 'fixed' layout you need in an iBA book....that can mean significant work in some examples.
You may want to work with a sample to find out the best workflow in any case.
As for Arabic support, see this thread: Does iBook Author support Arabic...: Apple Support Communities
    Good luck.

  • How do I create a Table of Contents in InDesign CS6 for print that easily converts to epub?

How do I create a Table of Contents in InDesign CS6 for a print book that easily converts to epub?
Can anyone point me to a link for a step-by-step (not a video) on setting up all the elements of a print book properly (pages, table of contents and index) so they will convert and reflow perfectly from print to epub in InDesign CS6. This is not about building an ebook from ground up, but taking 50 backlisted print books (converted from old versions of Quark to InDesign) that now need to be converted to epub formats.
OR could someone point me to the link in the Adobe InDesign CS6 support that explains how to create a Table of Contents for a print book (5.5" x 8.5", 288 pages), one that will convert when the file is converted to ePub (for MAC OSX)?
Just downloaded the 706 page inDesign CS6 reference manual from Adobe <http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/indesign_reference.pdf>  but there's not even a search feature on the pdf file.
Up until this week, we have only done print books, creating the TOC the old fashioned way, as a fixed page, comprised of two columns: page numbers and chapters/subject. The files I have created are taken by our printer and printed beautifully.
However, when I convert the same book to epub in CS6, the character and paragraph styles converted beautifully - but everything else is all over the place! The table of contents is on different pages, the columns split apart. That goes for the page contents as well - everything is all over the place. when it's converted to a pdf -- total perfection. Never any problems converting with perfection to pdf format and reading those on the various readers.
(Thank you so much in advance for any help).

<http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/indesign_reference.pdf> Adobe Digital Reader does have a search feature for reading pdfs. Found the TOC instructions on page 176 of 706 pages.

  • Can I convert an ePub document to pdf format and vice versa?  If so, how?

I would like to publish my book in both pdf and ePub formats.  If I create the book in one of these formats, can I convert the finished product to the other?  If so, how do I do that?

It doesn't work to convert between PDF and EPUB, or back. Start with the same InDesign file and export separately to PDF and to EPUB.

  • How to convert mobi books to ePub format?

Hello, I have a question for help here, I have a lot of .mobi books on my computer, I wanna transfer these mobi books to my iPhone and iPad for reading, but I found they doesn't accept mobi format, I tried many ways to convert mobi to ePub but failed, the quality of  the output ePub file is so bad, unable to read. pleae help! Is there any software can convert hundreds of .mobi files to ePub format with high quality? Don't give me calibre, it keep crashed in my windows 8, and the it is not easy to use, waste of my time.

And, what did I say?  Asnlinkda asked how to convert a mobi book into an epub book (not how to convert an epub in a mobi). I said him that he should use some thid party app (that produces epub books) and if it's necessary, to polish the resulting book mobi to ePub converter. I also say that he could use mobi to ePub converter but that I prefer to use the first method. So, I say that is preferable to use (if it were necessary)
The way I go from Mobi > ePub is to use Vibosoft ePub creator or iStonsoft mobi to epub converter to convert, use Modify ePub to put in the cover and then use Sigil to rename the files and clean up the code/CSS. I find that's the easiest way to do it.

    Hi Max,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
This may be an issue due to the file being converted from another format. Check if original ePub format books are being recognized in the Reader.

  • Epub formatting

Hi. I am formatting a document to epub. The problem is, even when I insert a page break a page break does not appear in the ibook, epub document but does in a PDF. Does anyone know how I can format so that a page break occurs? Thanks.

I had purchased an iBook years ago from the store and it is no longer available now.  I am unable to dowload it to any device, including my computer, off of the cloud.  Also, what is interesting is that I have a copy of it downloaded onto my iPad (saved in iTunes) but it WILL NOT READ on my iBooks for Mac because of it being off the store.  I was a little concerned so I wanted to back up my iBooks to pdf's should this ever happen again.  I came to find out it was challenging to find good quality guidance on the issue.  So, I figured it out.
As of 11/6/13 with the new OSX Mavericks installed along with the latest iTunes 11.1.3 and new iBooks app for mac here is a quick way to do it.
    1. Do a spotlight search (CMD + SPACE) to find the iBooks folder.  (it is in your documents)
    2. Click on the folder and open it, inside you fill find another folder called Books.
    3. From here you may have to do some guesswork to find out which #######.epub file is the book you are looking for.  I suggest trying to open them individually and going on from there.
    4. Once you isolate the file, make a copy (option hold, click and drag) to the desktop.
    5. Go to this website http://www.convertfiles.com/convert/ebook/EPUB-to-PDF.html
    6. "Browse" for your file, select the ####.epub on your desktop. Make sure .epub is the "input format" and .pdf is the "output format"
    7. Click convert.
    8. Click the external link to download your converted file.
Happy reading, where you want to, with backup!

  • Epub format for iBooks

I am hoping someone can help me please.
I am a university student, and have many PDF versions of textbooks.
I want to use these in the iBook application, as I love how you can flip the page, and go to a certain page and have them in the bookshelf.
I downloaded calibre, but this is destroying the format of the books when I convert them to Epub format (as they are large files with many pictures etc)
I tried to convert them to HTML format as I read that may be easier to convert to Epub, but the files are too large to convert to HTML (I only tried this using my Gmail account though).
Can anyone help with any software or a better way to transfer these books to be used with the iBooks application please?
    (I am using a mac 10.5.8)

Can anyone help with any software or a better way to transfer these books to be used with the iBooks application please?
Probably not. As you've learned, Calibre direct conversions can be "hit or miss" depending on the source file and how willing you are to play with the user preferences. A multi-step conversion should yield better results but may require a lot of manual editing--especially with regard to your graphic resolutions and placement on the page. In short, you would likely have to devote a considerable amount of your time to making a "proper" conversion and even then, making citations for classwork might be a problem due to the re-flowing nature of the ePUB page references depending on font face and size used when sourcing the material. As Tom indicated your are basically attempting to change a print targeted layout format to a screen display inline-flow format where some features of the differening formats tend to be somewhat mutually exclusive. Although retired with plenty of time on my hands, I would not lightly attempt the conversion of a lengthly and highly illustrated tomb even assuming the content were openly available.

  • Need to convert to vector format.

I have a document with pictures.  I need to convert it to vector format before sending to printer.  Not sure how to do it.  Using CS5.  Is converting to outlines the same?

It must be difficult to convert from illustrator into a vector format since no one has a specific answer.
    Soshagayle7,
There is no automagic "conversion" from a raster image to a vector graphic. The artwork represented by a raster image can be redrawn as vector artwork.
You can re-draw the artwork using the vector drawing tools in Illustrator or any similar program. You can even import the raster image and use it as a guide while "tracing" it with vector paths.
Or (and this is where the all-too-common misconception about "conversion" comes in)...
You can use the autotrace feature which exists in Illustrator or any similar program to try to automate the process of "tracing" the raster image with vector paths.
Either way, you end up with what would more accurately be called a "reinterpretation" of the subject, not a "conversion" of the raster image in the sense of "converting" one file format to another.
And that's the key. All that most current autotrace features (including the one in Illustrator) do is detect color differences between pixels of a raster image based upon a user-specified sensitivity setting, and then try to draw vector paths which follow along those detected differences. It's very much a garbage-in-garbage-out process.
And even when the "in" is not garbage, there is no real intelligence involved. The kind of autotrace algorithms in Illustrator and programs like it have no shape-recognition intelligence. For example, in the case of a human face, the autotrace feature doesn't know that the eyes' pupils are round; it just detects a region of similarly-colored pixels and tries to draw a path around them. Similarly, in the case of a geometric logo that obvously (to a human) is supposed to contain a perfect circle, the autotrace feature doesn't "see a circle"; it doesn't go and get the Ellipse tool and draw a circle that fits, as any human would do. Again, it just tries to follow around the regions of similarly-colored pixels.
But that sounds okay, right? Well think about it. Imagine turning the sensitivity of such an algorithm way up to the max. What's going to be the most accurate autotracing of a raster image? The mathematically "most accurate" result would be a perfect vector square for each and every pixel in the image. And the "vector advantage" of that would be absolutely nill. The resolution-independence reason for preferring vector paths would be rendered moot. Such a graphic would be entirely vector, but to absolutely no advantage regarding scaleability. (Thus my comment about the line drawn with a 1-pixel raster image.)
So the reason you haven't received an answer to the "how do I convert" question is because the same thing has been explained in this forum countless times, and to answer it correctly really requires a lengthy explanation (like this one) that tries to clear up the too-common misconception that autotracing is some kind of magic bullet for "converting" a raster image into a vector graphic in some kind of mathematically accurate way that then yields all the advantages of properly drawn vector graphics.
Autotracing is useful to those who understand when it's appropriate and why. But without seeing or at least knowing more about the actual raster image you are dealing with, advising whether it's appropriate in your case is nothing but a guess. Generally speaking, if the image in question is not already of high enough resolution at the size at which it will be printed, then it's probably also not of high enough resolution for good auto-tracing results. And if it is of sufficient resolution for the size at which it will be printed, then there's probably no reason it needs to be vector.
Bottom line: There's a good reason why vector graphics are preferred. But that means properly-drawn vector graphics. The best way to "convert" your raster image to a vector graphic is to re-draw it using the vector tools. The sometimes-acceptable but often sub-standard "cheat" for doing it is to import the graphic and apply the autotrace feature (called LiveTrace in Illustrator). It's use is explained in the online help.
Autotracing--the "conversoin" that such questions are almost always talking about--is not a lossless translation, like converting quarts to gallons or binary to hexidecimal. Entropy always rules. Anytime something is automatically "reprocessed" something is lost, not gained. You see that in everything from repainting a room over and over without removing the old paint, to taking photographs of photographs of photographs. Degradation occurs. You swap one kind of ugliness for another. That's autotracing when used inappropriately.
The drawing tools exist for a reason. If you really need vector paths, you should probably draw them.

    Hello,
Following is the procedure to convert alv output to spool and then it to PDF Format.
After we display the ALV, we can check whether it is running in the background using system field u2018sy-batchu2018. Then,we call an function module named u2018GET_JOB_RUNTIME_INFOu2019 to get the current job information. Then go to spool request table tbtcp to get the spool id.
    Get current job details
      CALL FUNCTION u2018GET_JOB_RUNTIME_INFOu2019
           IMPORTING
                eventid                 = gd_eventid

                                                   jobcount
                                                   stepcount.
      READ TABLE it_tbtcp INTO wa_tbtcp INDEX 1.
Finally, we can call function module u2018CONVERT_ABAPSPOOLJOB_2_PDFu2018 to convert spool reqeust(which is stored in OTF format) to PDF format. Then we can call either function module u2018SO_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1u2032 or SAP BCS (Business Communication Service) to send the pdf as an email attachment.

  • Internal table data 1E2 automatically convert to scientific format

    Dear all,
I have been searched for solution moths from the forums and tried all possible methods, but still no way to solve my above problem.  I found a way to solve it partially for us, but may be very helpful for others who meet similly case like mine, so I posted here.
my problem is when I export my internal table data to Excel, the Cell data with 1E2 auto becomes 1.00E02, and 1E8 becomes 1.00E08, we need it to be 1E2 and 1E8 in excel.
you can recreate my problem by
1,  input 1E2 into your Microsoft Excel, then Enter, it will auto change into scientific format. which is we do not want.
2, use any of your SAP system open any table as long as there is a Char (>3) field in that table. add some
data entry in that field in the form "any amount (<15) of numeric 1 to 9"E"any one or two numeric 1 to 9". such as, 123E2, 1234E12 etc. then save this table's data to local file spread sheet, or use any FM to download it to a Excel file, when you open this
file by Excel, the cell with above form will display as scientific. but
if you put three or more numeric after the "E", such as 123E123 it will
    display correctly.
    what I have done:
I searched in SCN for similar thread:
Export to Excel 2007 - item number problem
Exceding the limit of numbers in Excel at target side
        Excel download cell format problem
Formating as Text in excel through SAP
Converting of amount field into excel file through GUI DOWNLOAD
Data downloaded to excel gets converted to exponential format.
Problem with Excel download   and scientific number
Re: Issue in displaying numbers in Excel?
CSV Flat File Data Problem (Number converting to Scientific Notation)
Tested accordingly, But none of these works in our case. because our
ultimate receiver of email attachment will be external third party, we cannot ask
them to change anything in their Excel.
Search Microsoft help about Excel, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/214233,
and it says this "Automatic Number Formatting" is a normal behaviour of excel.
no way to turn it off, the "work-around" way that Microsoft provides is not suitable for our
    case.
We test CL_iXML recently arrording to weblog http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/Snippets/FormattedExcelasEmailAttachment
it successful controled the format. so this could be a solution for others whose internal table size is small. but our 2MB internal table bocome 6MB when converted to xml file attachment, which cannot be received by our end user's mail box. too big.
    So please advise your ideas.
    Many thanks in advance!
    Peter Ding
Thank you very much for your time!

    Hi,
You can achieve this by describing the spreadsheet in XML with the help of the DOM classes.
The later releases of Excel can read and save spreadsheets as XML, providing your release supports this you can achieve it.
    Check out the following Wiki
    [Excel - XML|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/abap/exporting%2bdata%2bto%2bexcel%2b-%2bxml%2bto%2bthe%2brescue]

  • Advice on using RH's ePub Format & Mobile Device Help

    Hi All,
I'd like some advice on the ePub format and creating help for mobile devices using RoboHelp.
I need to create online help for a basic Contact Record Managment system that will be available on the iPhone, Android, iPad, BlackBerry Torch, etc. I'm using RoboHelp 8 and have followed the instructions on the Adobe blog to generate the ePub format. I'm trying to determine if I should use this format. The way I see it, I could either use the ePub format or modify the CSS so that the help content appears large enough on the mobile device screens.
Is the main benefit to using the ePub format its abililty to resize the content? I guess this would be useful, since the application will support both smart phones and tablets. Also, my other concern is creating online help that requires users to download an ePub reader. Do most mobile devices come ePub-enabled? I know the iPad does, but I'm not sure about smartphones.
If anyone has created help for mobile devices using RoboHelp and can offer any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

ePub being the ubiquitous format now so almost all the smart phones and devices have a default reader for ePub.
For elaborate flow for ePub generation please follow the links below

On June 2, in a post entitled Pages to ePub, I evoked the challenge of transforming a novel, written in Pages, into epub format for the iPad device. Over the last week, I've succeeded in carrying out this task completely, in an essentially manual way.
Harrison Ainsworth's excellent tutorial on building epubs, which is perfectly sufficient for the basic stuff, can be found at

The first operation consisted of exporting all my Pages files as pure text. Then I used BBEdit (on my iMac) to insert countless pairs of XHTML tags: basically "p" tags. The steepest learning curve for me (as an enthusiastic Flash developer who hasn't touched HTML for years) was getting the knack of how to write a perfect XHTML-oriented Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) file.
Curiously, I was hung up by a trivial obstacle for several days: the necessity of zipping together all my files, to create the final .epub document. Here again, Harrison Ainsworth kindly solved this problem by pointing me to a magic tool (in fact a tiny AppleScript device) that can be found on a MobileRead forum at

While waiting to buy an iPad, I'm using the Adobe Digital Editions tool on my iMac to display my novel. Finally, the most convenient way of validating the end result consists of using the website at

So, my 318-page novel is now ready (well, almost ready) to be published. I'm awaiting an ISBN number from the French authorities. And maybe I should get a professional graphics artist to produce a first-class cover illustration. For the moment, I haven't looked into the question of whether Apple will be prepared to accept my novel for their iBooks distribution (since I live in France).
I'm now faced by the following tough question: Should I carry on using Pages as a creative-writing tool, or would I be better off using an ebook-oriented environment right from the start? For the moment, there are two or three significant advantages in using Pages for creative writing: (1) There's no technical barrier between the author and his/her output. (2) I can distribute my stuff conveniently to friends and colleagues in the form of PDF files. (3) I can print out pages on A4 paper, for checking.
As much as I'm really fond of Pages, I'm not sure that these advantages justify the messy operations involved in moving to epub format. Consequently, I fear that I might soon be putting Pages in mothballs… alongside Textures, PageMaker and InDesign.

Honestly, at the moment if you are writing fiction, the easiest answer is to use Word or one of the Open Office variants and then use an aggregator and let them hassle with the coding parts (although I must point out that there are some difficulties for the future in terms of the publisher code and the ISBN ownership). Or else get really good at writing CSS/XHTML for yourself, or hire someone to do it for you. There are places where you can get a manuscript formatted for all the major outlets.
For any kind of heavily formatted book, I think the solution is to hunker down and wait a bit. People in the industry are still figuring out how to enforce a lot of formatting (there are some magnificent cookbooks in ibooks right now, for instance, but section headers and captions may not appear in the right place if you tinker with the settings), and it remains to be seen exactly what Steve Jobs meant by including PDFs in ibooks. He didn't say "sell PDFs through the ibookstore", and for material where there's any kind of fixed formatting, PDF is still the best way.
There are some serious bugs in InDesign CS5 for epub creation, although the chapter splitting feature is very tempting. But I think a lot of production shops are waiting to see if Adobe will release a point update before moving to CS5, for all the hassles in CS4.
The other big consideration is the platform wars. If you want maximum readership, you will need separate formatting for Nook, Kindle, ibooks, and now there is a new ereader that is going to be sold in all kinds of general purpose stores like CVS, for example. Formatting for that isn't known yet.
Eventually this will all shake out. They are working on a new standard for epub that should help with a lot of the current problems, but that's probably 18 months away or more.
Another option is to publish your book as an app. I did see a press release last week from someone who is selling a kit to turn a book into an app, but I haven't heard any feedback about whether it's any good or not. Or you can do what the Take Control series has been doing: sell a PDF and recommend GoodReader.
I was pretty excited about that blog post last fall where someone claimed to have found ebook creation embedded in the Pages package, but in reality right now it's a highly complex process, no matter where you start, so it's not surprising this hasn't come to pass. My own ideal would be to be able to lay out a book in Pages and use that as the basis for a PDF or just send a perfect epub straight to the ibookstore, but I'm not sanguine that this will ever be possible.
