Converting to fixed vhd - large disk

Hi,
Have a dynamic vhd of 1.7 TB - currently expanded to 1.4 TB.
The volumes on the SAN is 2TB.
Need to convert the dynamic vhd to fixed vhd but as you can see there is not enough Space on the SAN volume.
Any suggestion on how this may be solved without loosing the huge amount of data on the disk?

Hi,
In addition  , convert-vhd applies to windows 8 and later , if you are using 2008r2 please use GUI to convert it .
Also you can refer to following link regarding using powershell :

  • Convert a dynamic vhd to fixed vhd using Convert-VHD cmdlet

    Hi folks,
I have dynamically expanding vhd. Now I want to convert it to fixed size vhd.
I used the  Convert-VHD  cmdlet, which works fine.
But if I give the source and want to overwrite my dynamic vhd to the fixed vhd,  it is throwing error, such the file exists.
Convert-VHD –Path "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" –DestinationPath "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" -VHDType Fixed -DeleteSource
Is there any other option (like -Force) available for this ?
Note: Without using a temp file and renaming, I hope we have a better solution
    Thanks,
    Saleem

    Syntax is like below
    Convert-VHD -Path C:\temp\200MB-Dynamic.vhdx -DestinationPath c:\temp\200MB-fixed.vhdx -VHDType Fixed
you need to have different names :-) like a copy command in the old days of DOS
otherwise the Option -deletesource in your example would delete the disk file ? makes no sense right
What is the Problem to fire a Rename Command after the Convert ?

  • Large Disks On Solaris Intel 8EA

I am trying to setup a Large Disk ( 27 or 40 GB Maxtor ) using
Solaris 8EA on a Pentium Pro MAchine. The Disk Partitions fine
and am able to setup multiple Filesystems for 8 or 9 GB's
easily. But when trying to access these Filesystems
online I get several disk errors and Timeouts.
I tried several configurations for the Disk. Has anyone
face the same problem. Is this fixed in Solaris 8 Final
    edition.
    Thanks,

Actually the hardware is fine. I tried testing the hardware with
different operating systems. I think Solaris8 has a bug dealing with large SCSI and IDE drives.

  • Convert VMDK to VHD

    Hi!
I have installed Hyper V, and I'd like to convert my vmdk (vmware) to vhd files.
In order to do that, I download this:
    http://vmtoolkit.com/blogs/announcements/archive/2006/11/20/vmdk-to-vhd-converter-available.aspx
The result is a file very small (56kb) whereas the size of my virtual hard disk is 8Gb.
Then, I attach this file (vhd) to my VM but the system doesn't boot. Why?
    Thanks

    Simon,
    VMWare
    du Win2k8R2,
    le convertir en
    un VHD,
    et enfin à double
    boot
    mon installation Win7
    original et
    le VHD convertis.
    C'est le seul moyen
    que j'ai trouvé pour
    lancer Hyper-V sur
Windows 7.  (et merci a Google translate)
    Salut!

    Simon,
My french is pretty bad... I haven't spoken it in about 20 years, but I understood just enough to do the conversion.  Thanks a lot for the guide!  I wanted to install Win2k8R2 with Hyper-V on my Win7 installation.
I started with a VMWare image of Win2k8R2 (w/ Hyper-V) before the first reboot during installation, converted it to a VHD (via his guide), and finally I dual booted my original installation of Win7 with the converted VHD (yes, physical boot of virtual
hard drive).  This is the only way that I could boot a 64-bit version of Windows on my Windows 7 hardware.

  • VM exhibiting 100% disk busy time, large disk queue lengths

    Hi everyone,
We have a .VHD workload residing on a logical 2 x 136Gb RAID1 mirror pair of disks.
The .VHD file is 130Gb (with 70Gb of free space)
The Virtual Machine is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1, 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM and is exhibiting 100% disk busy time and disk queue lengths of anywhere between 14 and 44
I'm assuming this is because there is virtually no disk space on the logical drive. Ops Mgr 2012 R2 reports high memory pages/sec
So we backed up the .VHD workload, broke the RAID1 Mirror and inserted 2 x 300Gb  as a RAID1 mirror and restore the .VHD / VM
The Logical disk has 50% free disk space, however the VM is still exhibiting 100% disk busy time and the above disk queue lengths.
It is running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 HP Proliant Server running the Hyper-V role under Server Core
    Any ideas most appreciated.

    Hi,
The mirror array doesn’t improve the disk performance but only for the disk redundancy, base on my experience some application frequent operate the large small files often
can use the large disk resource, if you can’t sure the high disk IO cause by the guest vm or host computer, you can use the Resource Monitor first to identify which process handled the high disk resource, then do the further troubleshooting:
The third party Resource Monitor use example:
How to use the Resource Monitor in Windows 7 & Windows 8

    Hope this helps.

  • Disk Utility: Cloning to larger disk?

I would like to clone the content of a 256GB drive (specifically a TimeMachine archive) onto a 1TB drive in order to increase the available space. A file copy of the archive does not capture all of the necessary hidden files and other information.
As suggested in the Time Machine forum I have cloned the drive using the Disk Utility->Restore feature with source the 256GB drive and destination the 1TB drive (and with Erase Destination enabled).
The 256GB drive contained a single partition which held a 230GB TimeMachine archive and showed 3GB free. The 1TB drive has one partition and DiskUtility drive shows:
    Capacity : 931.4 GB (1,000,070,627,328 Bytes)
    Available : 2.9 GB (3,140,665,344 Bytes)
    Used : 229.9 GB (246,896,115,712 Bytes)
So instead of showing over 700GB free it is showing only 3GB. This is also true in the Finder.
I have attempted this procedure with both Apple and GUID partion maps and the result is the same. The source drive has an Apple partition map.
My question is first, whether what I am attempting is possible: Can I clone the archive to a larger disk and then utilize the additional disk space? If so, what must I do in additional or instead of DiskUtility->Restore to complete this process?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

    dw0s wrote:
Thank you for detailing the procedure and I have verified step by step that that is what I have done. I have also preceded it by erasing the new disk and repartitioning it (1 GUID partition). The restore operation requires about 3 hours and then the verify takes 45 minutes. I should add that the last time I repeated this operation (the third time) the verify ended with a nonspecific error however the disk had mounted and the restore seemed complete--except that disk size and availability was as I described above.
I tried this yesterday - using Disk Utility to move a Time Machine Backup from a 750GB drive to a 1TB drive, and got a specific error - a timeout error. When I mounted and looked at the disk afterwards, I saw the same thing as you did: It would report only as much free space as the original had. I checked it with Disk Utility, which reported "invalid b-tree node size", and was not able to repair it.
My hunch is that the timeout may have been due to one of the two MyBook disks falling asleep during the verification operation (I was asleep myself , so I couldn't see what really happened), but the log says that it copied form 8PM to 0:20 AM, then verified until reporting "Could not restore, operation timed out" at 3AM.
Does anyone know of a trick to keep the MyBooks awake?

  • Can I move existing time machine backups to new, larger disk?

I have used Time Machine with success for a long time. Now I have a much larger disk drive and want to move the old backed up files to the new drive, then continue building files after that.
The current Time Machine backup file's Info says it is --get this-- 48.66 TB in size. But it sits on a 2 TB disk. I don't know if that's a mistake or a peculiar way to account for all the updates.
In the Time Machine preference screen it says I have 169 GB of 2 TB available.
Can I just copy this folder onto the new (4 TB) disk and tell Time Machine to select that as the current disk and have it continue to build and houseclean my accumulated history?
(I've started that process, but it tells me I will be copying zillions of files and will take a boatload of time to do it. It gives me a message that there isn't enough space to make the copy. But, of course, there really is.)

  • Migrating bootable disk to a larger disk

I've been trying to move my OS from a smaller hard disk to a larger one, but I am completely stumped. I've tried using the Lenove Rescue Disk- didn't work. I've tried EasesUS to do backup - didn't work. I've tried Wondows recovery from a disk image -didn't work. In every scenario, the Lenovo bios seems to intervene to prevent making the new disk bootable. When I should get a blank screen or a windos screen, I get the Lenovo screen. It always ends with an error, such as an inability to locate the image, inability to see the media, etc.
I have an M seeries computer.
Is it possible to move my OS to a larger disk?
    If so, how?

    hi fitzgreen203,
    Welcome to the forums.
It should be possible to migrate or clone the stock OS (say you have a stock 500GB HDD) to a bigger capacity (say 1TB).
    Can you try these steps:
    Option 1:
Clone / Migrate the OS from stock HDD to the new one.
    - OS Migration (using Paragon Backup & Recovery Home)
    - Disk Cloning (using Macrium Reflect)
    Option 2:
If you have a preloaded Win8.1 OS, you can also try the following to transfer the OS only.
    1. Check this guide on how to obtain a Windows 8.1 ISO (see Option One)
    2. When finished, follow this guide to make a bootable UEFI Win8.1 installer via DVD/USB flashdrive and use it to install Windows (the installation should be able to detect the Windows 8.1 product key in the UEFI firmware that will let you activate Windows).
Let me know how it goes.

  • I want to clone an internal windows disk to a larger disk in my G5 Pro. Would I have to do it from the Windows side and what software is needed?

I want to clone an internal windows 7 disk to a larger disk in my G5 Pro (2009) 2.93. Would I have to do it from the Windows side or can I do it from the mac side, and what software works for cloning if anyone knows.
    thorpug

We don't mix names G5 (IBM, PowerMac) and Mac Pro (Intel)
Depends what you actually are doing.
Do both Mac and Windows reside on same or separate drives?
For running a Mac utility, then WinClone 4 $39
Review was on http://www.macwindows.com two weeks ago
For Windows on its own drive and disk to disk, then Paragon HDM 12 is best.
You should visit Paragon, for imaging and cloning Windows as well as HFS+ drivers.

  • Convert vhdx to vhd

    Hi,
    Running Server 2012 R2
I have a requirement to convert a vhdx to vhd. I used the builtin feature in the hyperv manager to convert the vhdx (Fixed) disk to a vhd (fixed).
When i create a new server an attach this vhd disk, i get an error when the vm boots. It briefly displays the windows logo, then gives an error: boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device. This occurs
whether i attach the disk as ide or scsi.
Why would the converted drive no longer be bootable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Sean

If the VM was a Generation2 virtual machine, then it is UEFI.  And VHD can only be used with Generation1 virtual machines which are BIOS.
The OS in the VM cannot simply handle the bootloader change between BIOS and UEFI.
That is what I suspect is going on.

  • How do I convert TC sparse bundle to disk image?

Ok, this question could be cross-listed under a number of threads, so I had to just pick one...
A few months ago, the HD in my MB was clearly dying, so I replaced it with a larger, faster drive. All good, until I realized I had been close to maxing out my Time Capsule before I upgraded my MB's HD, so I upsized that, too.
    Fast forward 2 months.
I have a weird problem where iPhoto events start going dark. The database had these previously imported files listed, but the files themselves were nowhere to be found! The event in iPhoto showed black squares where the images used to be, but even looking in finder... No pics!
I want to go back into my old (saved) HD that I pulled from my Time Capsule. I stuck it in an external USB enclosure, and hooked it up. I told Time Machine to use it as the backup, but after it 'verified' it, it didn't show me the archived files. It does show a 'sparse bundle' in finder, which I understand is similar to a disk image. So is there a way to convert the sparse bundle to a disk image? Do I need to plug my old TC HD back into the TC to get to that archive?
Help! Among the lost photos are ones from a trip to Australia and my grandmother's memorial service. I need to get these back!
    Thank you in advance.

    tgilk wrote:
I've already done the TC surgery once before and the hardest thing was loosening the adhesive on the rubber pad / gasket on the bottom of the unit. After that, I completed the HD replacement in about 15 minutes... piece of cake. There's actually a good tutorial on AppleFritter. But I digress...
It's not too much of a digression. Remember that if you are just firing up the Time Capsule with the old hard drive, you don't have to reassemble it. Just swap out the plugs from the old drive to the new and turn it on. A true PC geek never runs with the cover on.
However, messing around with adhesives and thermal paste introduces a new element of risk. If you know the dates that have good data, and you are comfortable merging the newer photos back in, accessing the data via the Finder on an external enclosure would be faster and safer.
So, can I turn the TM backups off and still enter 'TM' to browse through the backups on the drive? I've ID'd the specific dates of my missing photo events, so as long as I can get into the backup, I will know just what folders to search for in the 'Originals' folders in the backup.
Yes. That is probably one of the most important and least known tips about Time Machine. You can still use it even if the backups are turned off. Furthermore, if you ever start to have problems on your machine, you should turn off Time Machine to avoid further corruption of your backups.

  • How to convert VHDX to VHD file format on windows 8 / Windows server 2012?

Here is an article to describe how to convert virtual hard disk VHDX file format to VHD
    http://anuraggawande.blogspot.in/2012/10/vhdx-to-vhd-conversion.html

    Hi,
Thanks for sharing the web link!
You help other community members who facing similar problems.
Thanks for your contribution to Windows Server Forum!
To convert VHD format, you can also use Convert-VHD comlet. The Convert-VHD cmdlet converts a virtual hard disk file by copying the data from a source virtual hard disk file to a new virtual hard disk file of a specified format and version type. The format
is determined by the file extension of the specified files, either .vhdx or .vhd. Conversion is an offline operation; the virtual hard disk must not be attached when the operation is started.

  • Acrobat X Professional - Batch Convert - Please FIX!

When batch converting multiple MSWord Documents into Acrobat PDF's the process strips the title from the document (in the properties of the MS Word document) and replaces it with "filename.doc".
When you need to process 100's of work documents daily this becomes a tedious nightmare having to add individual titles to each and every pdf file.
As a power user of Acrobat this has never been an issue with any past version of the product. Please fix this.

    Thanks for your reply Dave.
We have tried multiple ways to do this.
From explorer and selecting "Covert to Adobe PDF" although it works is not practicle with the volume of PDF's we create and each conversion requires user input.
The "Batch Create multiple files" from the File -> Create menu strips the title from the documents.
Im not sure what your mean by "opening multiple files in the selection dialog from the Create PDF button in Acrobat". Can you please explain this?
Just some backgrounf on ourselves. We are a team of 7 all using Acrobat X Pro 10.0.1. We are an Area Health Service Department based in Sydney Australia and we manage an intranet which covers 10 large city hospitals and associated allied health and other community services. We process many 1000's of PDFs. None of us in the team have been able to find a work around. I would really appreciate further information as requested above if you can help.

  • How to Fix Encore "No Disk Error"?

When trying to start Encore CS5.0 I get an "Encore.exe - No Disk" error box.  The box says "There is no disk in the drive.  Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk8\DR8".  There are 3 buttons: "cancel", "try again", and "continue", none of these get rid of the error box and I can't open Encore.
    I've reinstalled Encore, no effect.
I disabled a device in location 8 and the error box message changed to "There is no disk in the drive.  Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Harddisk4\DR4."  I re-enabled the device and the error box reverted to the original "...\DR8."
