Converting to MP4 using MPEG Streamclip

Hi,
I did post this in another topic, then realised I probaby should start a new one.
I am new so please be nice - and I'm not superwhiz with these things...
I am in the process of using the recommended MPEG Streamclip 1.2 (for Windows) to convert my .VOB file to MP4 so that I can play it on my ipod. The file is approx 500MB, and I think I may have selected wrong options as it has taken over 12 hours to convert 65% of the file... and it's still going (obviously :-))
I can't do a screen print of the settings I've used because it's still going... but the link should show you them basically, the differences are as follows:
Button says iTunes not iPod
Limit Data Rate 1.5 mbps
Framesize Other 640 * 480
Interlaced Scaling not checked

1. Is it normal for conversion to take this long?

*Please note I asked here not on the MPEG Streamclip forums just because you guys recommended it so you obviously have some experience using it.*

There are presets for the iPod and Apple TV-they are located under file->export to mpeg-4. Once the window pops up hit the iTunes button. You get a popup window with a long list of options.
The quickest setting would be 3gp-172 by something(the very last one).
It is designed to stream to the iPhone over the 3g network.
PS.
You can lower the bitrate to speed things up slightly, but using a p4 like yours will take for ever.

Are you asking if there's a way to export from mpegstreamclip so you don't need to render when you edit with the file in fcp? If so, yes... (sorry couldn't resist).
What format is your sequence in fcp (make the timeline active and hit command(apple)-zero? Note the pixel dimensions, frame rate and compressor settings and set the quicktime options in mpegstreamclip export dialog to match them. You should be good to go.
Also, you might do some searching here. Pretty sure someone posted a link to a tutorial on how to do this,

Using MPEG Streamclip to convert files for EX-1 sequence

I am trying to use MPEG Streamclip to convert mp4 and mpeg files in order to edit them in the same sequence as my EX-1 footage. What settings should I use on MPEG Streamclip that would be most appropriate for seamlessly editing the former MPEG and mp4 files with the EX-1 footage? Any thoughts on what sequence settings I should use? Right now I have it set as "XDCam Ex 1080p24 VBR" but every time I bring in files I have tried to convert using MPEG Streamclip, they need to render and I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks!

Error converting .mov to .avi using MPEG Streamclip

Hi folks,
I'm trying to convert an .mov to an .avi for a client using MPEG Streamclip. I have exported a high res master copy of the video from Final Cut (it's a .mov format is Pro Res 422 1920x1080 50i).
So when I bring this file into MPEG Streamclip, I select File > Export to Avi.... and then the following settings:
DivX Codec
Quality 75%
The compression starts and I instantly get the error "Compression Error"
When this started I installed the lastest version of DivX however since I am new to exporting as .avi I am completely lost. I was able to get MPEG Streamclip to export using Apple Cinepak however the quality is awful so I am looking for another solution. I have also tried converting from my highest resolution MPEG-4 export, however I get the same result.
I am thinking that maybe my DivX codec isn't installed, or there is some problem with it? However I thought a new installation of DivX would fix this.

I would suggest exporting three small test files using H264 codec at three different rezolutions.
Play them back and if satisfied send them to your client to evaluate so they can decide what will work for them.
1280x720 H264 files are what we give to our clients these days as "high quality' video.
Smaller files might be recommended for faster download and smoother playback on their system.

Unwatchtable results when converting to H.264 (MPEG Streamclip 1.8)

I converted several movies to H.264 a year ago using an older version of MPEG Streamclip, using the exact same settings (H.264, 720x576, 25 fps, 2400 kbps). These movies play fine on the atv. Movies that I recently converted, using MPEG Streamclip 1.8 and newer versions of QT (whatever the current version is) no longer play correctly on the atv. These newer conversions flicker green and really have no dicernable picture. The atv attempts to play the content (no error message), but the displayed picture is just a torn up mess. These newer conversions play fine on the Mac
(in iTunes or QT Player). Does anyone know what's wrong or how to work around this problem?

I stored this settings about 2 years ago as a preset.These settings do lot look right. If saved 2 years ago with a data rate of 300 Kbps, this should have been an iPod preset (likely for a 320 x 240) or possibly quarter PAL display dimensions "Baseline" profile. (I.e., roughly half the recommended iPod setting but a setting likely good for web use.) Baseline, files, despited their low data rate, would have been iPod compatible then and TV compatible now.
As I said before, the resulting movies all work fine on the atv except the very latest.Actually, in your original post, the settings you gave look more like they are for a PAL "Main" profile if you are using 720 x 576 dimensions and a data rate of 2400 Kbps. The problem is if your are using the "Baseline Low Complexity" profile, then this file will likely be trapped by iTunes as not be within acceptable "LC" profile specifications and I would assume not sync with either iPod or TV devices. On the other hand, if you are using the "Main" profile, then the file should be TV compatible but not iPod compatible.
I believe, unlike Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip uses Apple's H.264 Codec.The MPEG Streamclip default is H.264, but MPEG-4 is also available if you select it. However, even the MPEG-4 codec was originally limited to 900 macro-16 blocks back then -- usually assigned as a 480 x 480 display encode matrix. This was increased to 1200 macro-16 blocks when the "Low Complexity" H.264 format was introduced for MPEG-4 640 x 480 compatibility. However, even now, according to Apple, the MPEG-4 "Simple" profile is limited to 1215 macro-16 blocks or a 720 x 432 display encode matrix -- not 720 x 576.
I'm going to attempt to compress something with the Quicktime Pro tool as a comparision.Suggest you run your tests using H.264 "Main" profile at originally posted settings, switch to "LC" compatible H.264 dimensions/data rates, or use MPEG-4 at stated data rate but using compatible dimensions (e.g., 16:9 aspect ratio 720 x 400 display which is equivalent to a compatible 1125 macro-16 blocks).

Process for exporting in FCPX and then using MPEG Streamclip to downgrade?

I have footage shot with a 5Diii, and it is set at 1920x1080, 23.98p.
When I export through FCPX at H.264, it gives me a beautiful master file, but is larger than the 4GB that I need.
What is the process for using MPEG Streamclip to get a smaller file?
Do I export a master file in FCPX first using a different codec, and then use MPEG Streamclip to compress it? If so, what would be the best setting to export from FCPX, and then what would be the best setting to compress at in MPEG streamclip?
My goal is to be as close to 1080HD as possible.

Here is the background story....... I provide movie files on a DVD delivery (files in SD quality) and then also give a copy of the same films on a flash drive so clients can have it in HD quality, and plug the flash drive directly into the TV.
This always worked fine in the past until I ran into a movie file that is 4.7GB, and would not copy onto the flash drive, since flash drives only accept files up to 4GB.
So I tried reformating the flashdrive to exFAT. It allowed me to copy the 4.7GB on the flashdrive, but when I tried plugging it in directly to the TV, the TV did not recognize the drive. (I learned that exFAT is not always compatable with all TVs.)
My other option would be to download an app to let me reformat the drive into NTFS which accepts files bigger than 4GB, and supposedly works better with TVs. I haven't tried this yet because I am worried that downloading that app might mess up my computer. ???????
So....I have come to the conclusion that the only other thing I can do is compress the 4.7GB file to be 4GB (or less) so it will fit on the flash drive which I believe had an original format was MS-DOS FAT.
Are you suggesting instead of exporting the file from FCPX in H264, I should do it in ProRes? The file will be much larger than 4GB, but, then I can compress it, without losing as much of the quality as I would if I compressed an H264 file? Either way it needs to be 4GB or less, so I don't know if that defeats the purpose of using a ProRes file to begin with.

Using MPEG streamclip to convert VIDEO_TS files (DVDs) with chapters

I am using MPEG Steamclip to convert DVDs (ie VIDEO_TS files).
Where the DVD has no chapters then it converts in one go into a new file.
However where the DVD has some chapters, it gives me an option to convert each chapter individually. I actually just want to convert the whole DVD in one go, with all the chapters merged together - is there any way to do this?

MPEG1-DV conversion using MPEG Streamclip. Help!

I am having problems converting an mpeg1 movie clip for editing in iMovie.
I recently recorded a concert on my Sony DCR-HC40 camcorder. The majority of the concert was captured to cassette in DV-PAL format (720 x 576, stereo, 48 kHz at 25 FPS).
However, the final third of the concert was captured on the camera's MemoryStick Duo in MPEG1 muxed format (320 x 320 at 25 FPS). The clip is 84 Mb in size.
I want to convert the mpeg clip into the same format at the cassette footage so that I can seamlessly splice the two sets of footage in iMovieHD with as little depreciation in quality of image and sound as possible.
So far I have simply used the 'export to DV' command from the File menu in MPEG Streamclip. But this produces a noticeably crackly-sounding depreciation in sound quality and no improvement in image quality - rather the reverse infact, since when viewed in the larger Quicktime window, the clip shows up the poorer resolution of the original clip.
What do I need to do to get the original mpeg clip to as near a quality as the cassette footage, for editing and burning onto DVD for display on a TV?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
BTW, I am running Tiger 10.4.3 on a Pb G4 (QuickTime 7.0.3/iMovie 5.0.2)

mpeg1 footage is only fit for showing on screens no larger than an iPod photo or mobile device?
MPEG1 is usually encoded with low resolution and rather low bitrates so the quality is often rather poor.
However, MPEG1 CAN be encoded with DVD-like resolutions and bitrates so the quality CAN be quite good (MPEG1 doesn't support interlacing like MPEG2, though).
It would be a shame to lose the footage as it was part of a concert of Handel's Messiah.
One option could be to do minimal edits to the MPEG1 with MPEG editors like MPEG Streamclip and burn it as a VCD or DVD (they both CAN have the same video although DVDs rarely use it). Then you'd preserve ALL video quality there is.
...but this won't work with your 320x240 video because the VCD/DVD compatible resolution is PAL 352x288 or NTSC 352x240. So you'd need to re-compress even your 320x240 MPEG which degrades quality.
So your best quality option is to watch the MPEG1 on a computer monitor via MPEG Streamclip, QT Player or some other viewer.
Or, you can convert to DV and blend it with the high quality DV tape material. Converting MPEG to DV should not much or at all degrade quality because DV is a much higher quality codec than your MPEG1 source.

That's quite low. A DVD uses about 4-6-8 Mb/s and a low quality low res VCD uses 1.1 Mb/s. So your MPEG1 quality can't be very good to begin with.
Audio Tracks:
192 MP2 mono, 32 kHz, 32 kbps
That's very low, too. Even a low quality MP2 often uses 192 kb/s. And the 32 kHz must be resampled to 48 kHz for DV or DVD use.
when played, either via streamclip before conversion, or in QT (I don't have QTPro) after conversion to DV, distorts at quite low levels in a way that a QT movie from cassette does not.
I'm afraid that there is not much you can do if you hear the distortion even BEFORE any conversions. Some dedicated audio processing app might soften the distortion but I wouldn't count on that.
FWIW, you might try to convert using the "Low Level" audio. From the MPEG Streamclip guide:
"For MPEG audio tracks (MP1, MP2) two different audio levels are available for playback and conversion to MOV, DV, AVI, MP4 and AIFF: "High Level" and "Low Level". You can choose one of these two levels using the "Audio Mode" pop-up menu. The default level is "High Level". Use "Low Level" if, and only if, the converted movie or AIFF file shows an excess of volume."
you also mention that re-compressing with iDVD will further degrade quality. Is this true of both types of footage (mpeg->DV & DV cassette)?
MPEG2 compression used in video-DVDs will ALWAYS degrade quality. High quality material (such as DV) tolerates this better so you might not even notice it. So you should use high bitrates if you want to convert and burn the low quality MPEG1-converted-to-DV material as a DVD (with iDVD use Best Performance or don't exceed ~70 minutes with Best Quality).
would I need to get Roxio Toast? What is the difference between this and IDVD?
Toast 7 can be forced to burn non-valid DVD resolutions as a video-DVD (MPEG Streamclip can be used to prepare the MPEGs) with no re-converting or quality loss but those DVDs are not guaranteed to work on standalone DVD players so I'd not use that route.
Basically, what I'd like to acheive is a nicely-edited home movie with titles etc, to put onto DVD & VHS, of a 2.5 hour classical concert, in as good a quality, audio/visually as I can, from the two types of footage, spliced as cleanly as possible. The footage is continuous, but the media changes from cassette to mpeg at a certain point.
Don't exceed ~70-75 minutes with iDVD because after this the quality starts to drop. Toast 7 can burn somewhat longer high quality DVDs than iDVD because it uses compressed AC3 audio so it doesn't "steal" bandwidth from video as iDVD does with its uncompressed PCM audio. But compressing that low quality audio might not be a good idea either!

Using MPEG Streamclip for Mac. Help me if you can

Hi, I've found out about MPEG Streamclip in Apple Discussions.
I opened Streamclip for the first time and converted an .mpg file to .mov file by clicking File>Export to Quicktime. It successfully converted quickly and I opened it w/ Quicktime and was satisfied to open its properties and see two individual tracks for visual and audio. This should convert to iPod video format w/ sound, correct? What bugs me is the fact that the file size multiplied by 4, or went from 256MB to 1GB.
I would like to know the perfect exporting settings for good iPod quality (sound and visual) and reasonable size. What scares me is that if and when this newly 1GB file is converted to iPod, it'll be even larger, since a previously successfully converted movie went from 3.5MB to 5.1MB.
I'd like to know your experiences of using Streamclip. Should I experiment? What setting did you use to get the mpeg files to .mov files with smallest size and equivalent quality? Any reply is appreciated, and ones that answer my questions shall be favoured.

In a nutshell, YES you should experiment. You should also try iSquint incidentally.
However, MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 has an iPod button if you do File -> Export to MPEG4. Clicking that button sets the parameters to equal what the iPod would need to display without having to convert to a QuickTime movie first. Do one both ways to see if QuickTime and MPEG Streamclip's output looks identical (I've found QuickTime does a better job on animation).

Help, I brought a PAL DVD into FCP using MPEG Streamclip.

MPEG streamclip converted the file into a Quicktime file and the footage looked great in FCP. I then brought in other minidv footage via firewire. I exported everything as one clip whith chapter markers using Compressor and now when I bring all of the footage into DVD studio Pro 4 the PAL footage looks like a rake is dragged accross it but the minidvd footage looks great.
Any ideas?

Converting iPhone footage though MPEG Streamclip for FCE4

I'm trying to get the right settings to convert my footage from my iPhone4 to FCE4.0.1. I'm using the following settings when exporting to Quicktime in MPEG Streamclip:
Compression: AIC
FrameSize: 1280x720 (HDTV 720P)
Frame Rate 29.97
Frame Blend and Better Downscale on
Interlace Off
It seems to be stretching the footage a bit. I don't need HD, I don't think (would I notice a difference in Final Cut 4.0 anyway?). But I don't see another option that looks right. I tried this forum before and was recommended to do 1280 x 720 unscaled, but that option doesn't pop up in Streamclip (though it used to). Is that because I'm now using a different iPhone?
I'm using a MacBook Air with a USB connected external drive, 250 GB, with 70 Gig free. Formatted Mac OS Extended.
Any help much appreciated!

Converting VOB files with MPEG Streamclip

I'm trying to convert the video from a DVD camera to a format I can edit then burn to DVD. I have a few questions.
1. I copied the files from the DVDs to my hard drive. The folder contains .vob, .ifo, and bup files.
Are the other files needed or just the VOBs? Can I delete the others?
2. Per the recommendations in this forum, I downloaded MPEG Streamclip 1.9 to convert the files
from .vob to another format that I can edit in Final Cut Express. When I load the file and then
when I attempt to export it stops me and tells me that I must download apple's MPEG 4 playback
component.
Is this all I need to do to export into another format, or will I have to add another
program/component?
What would be the best format to export to if the purpose is to edit in FCE then burn to DVD?

Yes, you'll need the MPEG2 component (not 4). That will do it for the purchased software stuff.
Export to Quicktime DV/NTSC (or DV/PAL if that's the local standard).

Help! I can't seem to import video from MPEG Streamclip to iMovie without losing quality. What is the best format (Quicktime, MPEG4, or other) and compression (Apple Video, other) to use? Any other parameters I need to know about within MPEG Streamclip?

Thank you, Tom. I've ripped a DVD (legally) and have a short clip (5 minutes) that I want to export to iMovie to edit (titles at the begnning and end). I do a lot of editing in iMovie and just want the best quality video I can get from MPEG Streamclip.
