Converting to .PDF bookmark issue

Bookmark issue:  I am writing this for another user.  I am not familiar with InDesign but have analyzed the issue.  Version of InDesign: CS3 v5.0 version of Acrobat: 8 v8.1.3 version of Page Maker: 7 v7.0.1  The user creates an InDesign document with several 'chapters' of content.  The structure of the document   looks like the following where an X represents an entire chapter and a B represents a subsection of the   chapter.  X1   B1   B2   B3 X2   B4   B5   B6 X3   B7   B8   B9  The user then creates bookmarks for each chapter and subsection.  The bookmarks have a parent/child   relationship between X and B, respectively.  The same structure seen above is the structure the bookmark   tree takes on.  When the user goes about creating the file as a PDF, an odd issue occurs.  All of the bookmarks work except   B2, B4, and B7.  B2, B4, and B7 point to B1 even though they pointed to the appropriate locations in   InDesign.  Obviously, the appropriate settings are toggled to pull the bookmarks across to Acrobat.  Something isn't   quite right, and I want to figure out where the issue lies.  Things to consider: The InDesign files were migrated over from Page Maker files.  Anybody have any clue.  Any further information needed? --

I add bookmarks to my ID files on a daily basis and hardly ever found a fault with it. As far as I can tell, they appear exactly in the same tree hierarchy in the PDF as created in ID.
... The InDesign files were migrated over from Page Maker files. ...
may be a clue. ID may leave some rubbish in its files, and that rarely (for me, at least) may lead to otherwise unexplainable errors. Perhaps the PM import was not as 'clean' as you'd hope. Try this: export the file to INX and re-load it (you should use the "Open.." command for this). Check if the bookmarks display correctly in their little panel; then try the exporting to PDF again.
Are you sure about the sub-version number? 5.0 is an original, unpatched version, and a number of issues have been fixed -- I think the most up to date version would be 5.0.3 (don't quote me on that, check the updates!). It's not that I remember this issue from the updates, but you never know.

  • Time Out Issue When Converting from PDF to .doc or .dox format

I have a couple of PDF documents that I'm trying to convert to word doc (doc or dox) format.  I subscribe to the online Adobe Export PDF.  The export always times out.  The PDF is 18.08 MB.  Does anyone have have any suggestions?

    Hi riversideredhead63,
Are you able to convert other PDFs without issue? Here are a few things to try for starters:
Clear your browser cache (steps vary by browser).
If you're using a work computer, check with your IT team to confirm if you have firewall/proxy settings that restrict the ability to upload files to the Internet.
Try another web browser.  A list of supported browsers for accessing the ExportPDF service is available here: http://www.adobe.com/acom/systemreqs/
If those don't work, please get back to us. It would be helpful to know what sort of content is in the PDF file that you're trying to convert, and what application created the PDF. (If you don't know, choose File > Properties in Reader. The source application is listed in the middle of the dialog box.)
I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Convert MS Word bookmarks to pdf

Let me say that I'm no expert here but have been working with Acrobat Standard X for 5 years before a laptop crash.
Purchased  and installed Acrobat Standard X recently and noticed 2 problems I didnt have on my old version.
#1 Noticed that there is no adobe buttons in any of my microsoft office (excel, word ...).
#2 I use standard X to write manuals.  Using word to create the doc, I use bookmarks in word and then convert to pdf. but the bookmarks are not converting over to pdf.  I have insured that preferences/convert to pdf/Word  "add bookmarks to Adobe pdf" is checked.  Still no bookmarks are converted.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
Hope you have not called Tech-Support before you read this:
    First thing First:
Acrobat X is fully compatible with Office 2003. It includes MS Office (Word/Excel/PPT), Word_Import Comments, MS Outlook, Mail Merge, Attach As PDF, Attach As Secured PDF, MS Visio/Project, MS Access, MS Publisher.
Check the below mentioned link of Adobe Knowledgebase for the complete list of supported application:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333504.html
So you dont have to downgrade anything. You are all set to go. All you need to perform the steps mentioned in the Knowledgebase article to get the Acrobat Tab in MS Word/Excel etc to convert the word files along with the bookmarks.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/329/329044.html?rec=true
You can also watch the video available on it. Its real simple to do this. Should you have any issue while doing this, please reply.

  • Convert from Word 2007 to Acrobat Pro 9; bookmark issue

When converting from Word 2007 to PDF using Acrobat Pro 9, enabling "Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks", not only are Headings converted to bookmarks, but bulleted text (styles), as well.  I attached the subsequent PDF, but this forum does not permit the document attachment.  I really only want to show the Headings.  (It may be noteworthy to mention that when using this same set of styles in Word 2003 and Acrobat Pro7 the conversion was seamless.)
Does anyone know how to correct this?  I have reviewed my Word styles and the issue does not appear to be on the document level.  Am I missing some obscure setting?
    I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks.
    -PS

I had a similar situation occur when converting Word 2007 docs to Acrobat Pro 9 Extended via the PDFMaker (Acrobat add-on tab in Word 2007), and I want to share a workaround. In summary, I had extraneous bookmarks appear in the PDF (heading 3s, body text, XE Index tags, etc.)  that I did not select to be in the PDF.  I contacted Adobe's support and ended up talking for approx. 2.5 hrs to 2 different reps with no solution. They reproduced the issue on their end, but couldn't figure out how to fix this. I recently upgraded to Tech Comm Suite 2.5 from 1.0. The Word 2007 conversion to PDF via Acrobat Pro 8.x worked fine.
Scenario: I have 400-page user guides that I am required to publish as 'Press Quality' with navigable bookmarks to certain headings in the PDF. I have to generate the PDF via the Acrobat Add-On tab in Word, since I do not want to manually insert bookmarks in the PDF for 400 page documents (as you would when using the Adobe Print driver or 'Save As PDF' operation).
In the Adobe PDF Maker dialog, I have the following Application Settings selected in the General tab:
    Create Bookmarks
    Add Links
In the Bookmarks tab,  I originally had only two Elements selected for bookmarks:
Heading 1 (a Word Heading already present) as the Level 1 Bookmark.
Table of Contents Bookmark (a Word Style I created) as the Level 2 Bookmark.
As a result, the Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks and Convert Styles to Bookmarks were both enabled in the Bookmarks tab.
The resulting PDF contained extraneous bookmarks that I did NOT select, such as Heading 2s, 3s, even body text - too much to clean up for 400-page documents! Additionally, and this was annoying too - I noticed that all bookmarks appeared as Level 1 Bookmarks, making the PDF Bookmarks really messy. I converted multiple Word 2007 documents with the same results.
    How I resolved the issue:
In the Word 2007 document, open the Styles window, select all instances of the specific Word Heading (in my case, Heading 1). All instances of the selected Word Heading will be selected in the doc.
Click the New Style icon in the lower left part of the Styles window.
In the Create New Style from Formatting dialog, create a new style name (e.g., I created H1).
Just to be sure to NOT create the new style from an existing Word Heading, I selected (no style) in the Style Based On field.
Configure the remaining formatting items as necessary, and then click OK. All of the selected instances from the old Word Heading style are now changed to the new style created (in my case, H1).
Click the Preferences tab in the Acrobat add-on tab in Word 2007, and open the Bookmarks tab.
Remove the old Word Heading (in my case, it was Heading 1) so it no longer will be included as a Bookmark in the PDF.
Select the new Word Style that you created (in my case, H1) to be generated as the Level 2 bookmark. Note: My original Level 1 bookmark, "TOC Bookmark," is still selected. Now, only the Convert Word Styles to Bookmarks is enabled in the Bookmarks tab.
Generate the PDF once again via the PDFMaker, and no extraneous bookmarks appear in the PDF.
Note: I also noticed that when Index tags (XE tags) were present in an element selected to be a bookmark in the PDF (such as my new style, H1), they also appeared in the PDF Bookmarks pane. I just moved the XE tags down to the body text so they would no longer appear in the PDF.
Question for discussion: Maybe there is a bug in the PDFMaker when both Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks and Convert Styles to Bookmarks are selected? The extraneous bookmarks do not appear in my PDF when only Convert Word Styles is selected.

  • PDF Maker - Converting Word 2010 headlines to PDF Bookmarks

    Hi Guys,
I'm facing some issues within my organization using the Adobe Acrobat PDF Maker for Word 2010.
Since version 10.1.1 it seems that the bookmark creation tool malfunctions .
I'm trying to produce a PDF bookmarks based on word 2010 headlines , when I'm comparing version 10.1.1 output to 10.1.2,10.1.3,10.1.4 and even 11 outputs I can notice a variety of changes although all my settings are identical .
Is there any known issue regarding this problem ?
As for now  - I cannot upgrade any of my users to any version higher than 10.1.1.
    Should I report a new bug ?
Any help will be really appreciated .
    Thanks !

Sound like appearanced order is changed between the different versions. He saying if you set up Bookmarks in one version it should look the same in all versions. Apparently the organization (Business) he belongs to, each station have different version of Acrobat.
The best answer would be have evenone update or upgrade to the same version.

  • Converting a PDF file to Word format issue

I am using Adobe Reader XI 11.0.09 with the paid side bar to convert the pdf file to an editable Word 2007 format. The problem is that the formatting after conversion is really bad and getting worse, example of the most recient: "I n  a cont ingent circumstance, an effect  results  from  clearly definable causes, t hough t he effect could be  different, given an entirel y  possible and  different interrelation of  causes. In   short, a  contingent  event   or thi ng is a nonnecessa ry event or thi ng tha t either might  not  exist or could  be other than it is."
The conversion in the past was never this bad and I was hoping it was some setting but I have not found a way to tweak the settings in the converter. I have converted many pdf files and had no problems with the outcome of the conversion until recently.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

  • Right Click jpg from Windows Explorer Convert to pdf page size issue

I'm running Acrobat 8 Standard and trying to figure out what controls the page size when you right click and select convert to pdf on a jpg file.  I've got several jpg files of all shapes and sizes and no matter what I try the pdf is always Letter Landscape.  If I use File - Create PDF - From File within Acrobat then the pdf retains the size of the original jpg and that is what I want the right click to do.

I wanted to add a little more detail.  Using the right click convert to pdf on any jpg results in a pdf that is landscape letter.  If the jpg is smaller than the page it is scaled up but if it bigger then it gets cropped.  I can open the same files from inside Acrobat and they convert without a problem.  Any thoughts on what controls the conversion process whenever using the right click feature on a jpg file?

  • Broken PDF Bookmarks from Word doc with Headings

This used to work with older versions of Acrobat Pro (I have the latest version of Acrobat 8 pro). I just author a Word doc which has headings, and then I use the Acrobat menu in Word to create the PDF, making sure "Create Bookmarks from Word Headings"is selected.
The resulting PDF does indeed have the PDF Bookmarks there correctly, but they do not point to the locations of the headings in the actual document. In other words, they're not really bookmarking anything.
Can someone confirm the workflow that is supposed to ensure the bookmarks will actually point to the heading locations? What else could be wrong?
Thanks in advance! Attaching source word file (rename xml extension to docx) and resulting PDF file.
    SK

Thanks Bill. I am using 8.1.4, and Word 2007. Don't really want to downgrade though (it's been around for several years now). One thing I've been wanting to try is re-installing to the latest PDFMaker COM Add-in (PDFMOfficeAddin.dll), but I don't know how to. The add-remove programs doesn't seem to allow me to re-install individual components.
Just to confirm, the PDF bookmarks are meant to point to the Word heading locations, correct? I was wondering if you could try converting the Word file (just rename the .xml extension to .docx), and looking at the resulting PDF bookmarks. If they work as expected for you, then it's definitely something about my particular system configuration.
The Word headings to PDF bookmarks feature is so basic, and Word 2007 has been around for several years now, if there was a problem with it I'm sure there would be a fix from Adobe by now.
    Thanks for any further insights!

  • Error when converting to PDF/A-1b

I am using Adobe Acrobat X Pro v10.1.5, and when I try to convert a PDF to PDF/A-1b using Preflight, I get an error that the CIDset in subset font is incomplete:
The document uses Times New Roman and Arial.
    How can I fix?

I was able to convert it to PDFA/1b with AA9 with no problem. It did embed 4 font sets. The original document only had the Cambria fonts embedded. The Arial and Times-New-Roman were not embedded. For my AA9, there is a script under PDF Fixups for embedding fonts. That embedded 4 fonts. However, the PDFA conversion also embedded the fonts. Under the PDF Optimizer (assume that is available in the MAC version), only the Cambria fonts are listed in the file as embedded. You should note in the document properties>font tab if any other font is being used to substitute for those that are not present in the PDF. As I will mention below you probably see the Arial replaced by Helvetica and Times-New-Roman replaced by Times-Roman.
One other process that can be used is to print the PDF to a new PDF. Then open the original PDF (or a copy is better) and use Document>Replace Pages to replace all of the pages. The bookmarks stay intact this way, but as long as you use a settings file such as the Press or Print versions, you should have all fonts embedded. In my case I endded up with the Cambria and Times-New-Roman embedded and no Arial at all. The file size was also about half (57k). If you do not need the bookmarks, then the Replace Pages is not needed. The aspect of printing to a new PDF is not generally recommended, but is sometimes a quick way to get the desired result.
In general, creating the PDFs to be /A compatible up front is the best process. This should be done on the originating computer that is apparently a Windows machine. Unfortunately, the PDF gives no indication of the PDF creation tool, so that may be the issue. Part of the problem of embedding fonts for you may actually be the MAC platform. The Arial and Times-New-Roman are both Windows fonts with the MAC equivalents being Helvetica and Times-Roman. You might be able to edit one of the fonts and make it a MAC font and have it embed the font (this would be done by selecting some of the text with the edit tool and selecting the properties and changing the font. I am not sure, but I think this converts for all the font use. I think the printing process I mentioned may do the process.
I am not sure about the error message you are getting, but may be related to the font issue. So we have suggested 3 different possibilities: 1. embed the fonts in preflight; 2. convert to PDF/A in preflight (apparently failed for you because of fonts); and 3. print to new PDF and hopefully get the fonts that allow the PDF/A conversion.

  • ALL MY DESKTOP APPS CONVERTED TO PDF FILES.

  • Error in converting a pdf document to a Word document

I have Adobe Acrobat 6 running under Win XP.
My Panasonic Lumix camera manual is a pdf file that I wish to place on my Kindle 4. I copied the pdf file across but, although Kindle is supposed to be able to handle pdf files, it wouldn't with this one - it simply froze when I opened it in the Kindle. I therefore decided to convert the pdf file to a Word document file and email it to Amazon for a free conversion to a Kindle azw file. I attempted to use Save As in Acrobat to save the pdf file as a doc file but, after a few pages, I got the error message:
Bad pdf; could not read page structure. <Bad pdf; error in processing fonts: cannot find CMap resource file> [26-27].

For what it's worth I pulled in some of the product line's user guide PDFs. Those I looked over were authored with FrameMaker or InDesign.
As these both support solid PDF output and from a quick look-see I'd not attribute the core issue to a poorly created PDF.
With that said; two things are evident. They are not Tagged and, with the heavy graphics content, of a healthy file size.
Tagged PDF is more than a little important as this is what provides the essential ingredient for export of PDF content (retaining font info, format, layout, etc.).
A healthy file size associated with the significant graphics content means that what is "under the hood" of the computer in use is significant as export puts a load on these resources.
Example: A local machine having  integrated graphics is hard pressed compared to a local machine having a dedicated graphics card with a comfortable amount of onboard RAM.
Due to "design" improvements over the years Acrobat X does a much better job of "export"/"save as" for untagged PDF.
But, "export"/"save as" of a well-formed Tagged PDF trumps.
    Be well...

  • How do I convert from pdf to word? I see an option to do so, however, when I click on it, Ia box opens...

when I try to convert from pdf to word, a box opens and suggests I am to click on (select) the file I want to convert. It sounds all well but it does not work. I really really just want my files back in word, all of them, no matter, because after having to reinstall windows 7 (done by techs) and me having to re-download all my HP drivers, and tools, and other software, which I imagine included adobe reader, now I see some pdf files won't open. It says, "access denied" and boy that really makes me wantt o scream. I am the ONLY user, it is my notebook, I am the administrator so I can't figure out why some files open and some don't. I can't ascertain any difference.
I would be grateful for any help. This has become just too exhausting. After reinstalling sooooooooo much, then to have to go through this with what is a free application? I say I think not.
This should NEVER happen with any free application and boy there is NO help to be found. They blow you off the phone fast telling you it's a free application. Then why are you putting in this kind of  stuff that it won't open? This is NOT a shared notebook, it's mine. I am the only user, personal use.
HP probook, if anyone needs that info.
    Please, will someone help?
    I would be so grateful.
    thanks,
    Gina

Gee, Pat, this is a  real big help.
Nobody could possibly think anyone would ask for help without first trying to fix the issue oneself. Or maybe you do. I have opened the file and looked under security. I have changed it to owner-notebook (which is what the techs called me) and clicked accept but geepers it didn't work.
Maybe someone else has an idea.
Take Ownership of a File or Folder
The above should be a link. At least I copied and pasted the link. I did what was stated in there. It isn't like brain surgery. But it is not working. I ended up being able to open some pdf files after transferring them from one partition category to another. I wish it was that easy as you seem to think.
Thanks for the help. Have a great year.
