Converting type to paths- CS3 vs. CS5

I have CS3, but am now trying out fw CS5, and have a weird issue when converting type to paths.
Original type:
Converted to paths on cs3:
Converted to paths on cs5
This is just an example, I tried with several different fonts, and they all produce different results, with cs5 always doing a much poorer job. is is because of the new type engine? Can anything be done about it?
it makes me question upgrading a lot!

Thanks for the feedback. I had tried your first suggestion to no avail, but had not tried the second. Now that I have, selecting the type only instead of the frame still caused a grad shift when converted. I ended up just re-applying all the gradients, but it would be nice to figure out if this is possible for the future. Appreciate the input, though.

  • Convert Illustrator script from cs3 to CS5

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to illustrator scripting I did some simple InDesign script before but this the first time I am ask to create script for Illustrator.
We have an old script that will create a report for the properties (e.i.: fonts, linkedImages, strokeWeights, dashes, strokeColors, etc.) of illustrator file. The script is working in CS2 and CS3 but since most of production people are now using CS5 and CS6 they ask if we could migrate this script to CS5. The script is using hashtable.jsx to get those properties. Does the CS5 script still need hashstable file or I have to create the script from scratch with out using the hashtable script?
Any suggestion or information on how I could convert the script to higher version is mostly appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,
    --elmer

I can't see #include in the script the only thing hashtable is called by this function. According to what I've read about the hashtable.jsx since it is in the startup script folder illustrator will autoload this script upon launching of the application.

  • Problem with smart guides in CS5 with converting type object to outlines.

    Hi There,
I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS5, and am having some issues with the smart guides.  I create some type with the text tool, then convert that type object to outlines.  Now, when I want another graphical object to "snap" to any of the anchors of the outlined text graphic, the smart guides don't kick in!  The problem does not seem to occurr if I make a standard graphic with other tools, only when I create a graphic from a type object.  I need to be able to snap to graphical objects that are created via the convert type to outlines command.  Has anybody experienced this issue before?  It's kinda frustrating.
The issue didn't seem to happen in CS3, and I've noticed the design of the smart guides is a bit different in the CS5 version as well.  Am I missing something?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

When you switched to CS5 did you turn on view >> snap to Point
If your snapping tolernace is set to a small value, you may need to zoom in more to get snapping to work, or just increase the value. Also make sure you have the appropriate items checked (eg:Anchor Path Labels)
Edit Preferences >> Smart Guides >> Snapping Tolerance

  • Converting In Design CS3 to CS5

We recently upgraded from InDesign CS3 to CS5. We have a bunch of templates created in CS3 but wanted to convert to CS5. Is there a certain way to do this or do we just save as in CS5?

In theory, just opening is fine, but in practice there are quite a few reports of problems that can crop up late in editing with converted CS3 files and I highly recommend that you export the template to.inx, then open that instead (you can resave as a new CS5 template if you like).
Something else that affects templates in particular is the change in locking behavior. By default a locked item in CS5 cannot be selected. As a side effect this also means that you cannot place content into a placeholder frame that you have locked for position. You can get back the ability to place into a locked frame by changing the behavior in the application preferences.

  • How do I update font from CS3 to CS5

I have been doing all of my design work on CS3 and finally left the dark ages for CS5. I converted my CS3 to CS5 on my old computer and things worked fine. Now, I have moved to a new computer with CS5 and when I imported my documents I got the missing text notice. It is for Lucidia Calligraphy and perpetua titling bold. I'm assuming those were fonts in the CS3 package. The question is can I import those fonts from the old computer into the new computer with CS5?? If so, how exactly would one go about doing that??

Neither of these fonts are installed with InDesign.
Restart your old computer and open one of the documents that contain these fonts. Then use Type > Find Font to get the location of these fonts (click the More Info button in this dialog). Note down the location, then use your OS to navigate to it (Finder or Explorer, it doesn't matter). ... Uh, I don't think CS3 had this wonderful option to immediately open an OS window at the font location in the Find Font dialog (yes, that same function that's not functioning on Windows 7!), but if it does you can use that instead.
Copy the font files on a removable device -- disk, USB stick -- or simply e-mail them to yourself. Then install them on your new system by following the approved steps for your specific OS.

  • Upgrading from CS3 to CS5 issues

I work at a medium size College on a pretty small team, 1 editor/writer, 1 communications coordinator, and 1 designer (me). I've been using InDesign (ID) for 5 years now and we added on the InCopy (IC) workflow a few years ago with CS3 (both of us then had CS3). The editor and I just recently upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and we've hit a snag. I opened a project, the Academic Catalog in fact, in CS5 that we began in CS3 which we were almost finished with and when I tried to check out a story I got this error.
"This story needs to be converted to "InCopy Document" format in order to edit it."
The editor got the same message in IC. So I thought maybe files created by CS3 for IC don't work with CS5 so I decided to try to unlink the INCX files in ID and relink. Sure enough it created a new ICML file which the editor was able to open, edit, and save in IC. And I thought I had my problem solved until I opened the file in ID; when I tried to update the linked file ID crashed. I've tried unsuccessfully to get the updated stories from IC to update in ID w/o crashing. I've restarted the computer; it is Windows afterall. I've run 'Updates' in both our programs, and it says there are none. I've tried tossing the ID and ICML file; fortuanalty I was smart enough to do all this with a copy of the orginal CS3 file. I followed all my above steps a second time and it's still crashing. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a known issue like this?
btw, we're both running Windows Vista and both in CS5 (7.0).

    AM
I might just have to go back to CS3 to finish this project up—fortunatly I foresaw an issue like this and kept CS3 installed. That will most likely solve the problem with this project, provided it too does not crash. And that is my concern for future 'new' projects in CS5, are those going to crash too? I think I'll do some testing with my editor.
    Bob,
What type of additional info would help?
    Thanks,
    Colleen

  • Convert Type to Centerline Instead of Outline

Is there any way to convert type so that Illustrator created a centerline instead of an outline?

    There is no
good automatic way. It's easy to see why:
    1. Set several lines of text, using various fonts.
    2. Type: Convert to Paths.
    3. White Pointer: Marquee select around all the former text so you can see all the anchorPoints.
Now look at any particular character, especially one with a counter (a hole in it) like A, B, b, etc. Imagine yourself the programmer and try to come up with a scheme that would intelligently take the anchorPoints that you see and interpolate them into a path that the user would consider a "centerline." Bear in mind, the scheme has to work for a "B" that is set in a blocky sans serif, as well as a "B" that is set in a swirly script.
So such a thing would no doubt resort to some kind of auto-trace routine that traces "centerlines." It would probably also need some kind of shape-recognition routine built in so that when the trace reached, for example, the join between the leg and the bowl of a "b" it would know where and how to make the "fork in the road."
For a starting point in trying to do it with Live Trace in CS3:
    1. Select the text. Object>Rasterize. Choose Bitmap for color mode.
    2. Object>LiveTrace>LiveTraceOptions. In the dialog, turn on the Preview checkbox. Set Mode to Black and White. Turn off the Fills checkbox. Turn on the Ignore White checkbox. Set Maximum Stroke Weight all the way to 100px. Set PathFitting all the way to 10. Play with the other sliders and preview the results.
Frankly, though, I've never seen an autotrace program really yield the kind of clean results most people would have in mind as "glyph centerlines."
For some tips on doing it manually, see
    this PDF.

  • Swf previews in browser and doesn't work on server after upgrade from cs3 to cs5

I have upgraded from CS3 to CS5. My site uses a template created in dreamweaver 8.  When I edit a page and embed a .swf file created in flash cs5, it doesn't work on my server, but works on my computer when I 'test in browser'.  I have uploaded all the files in the 'scripts' directory.  I am streaming video.  I have tried using both actionscript 2.0 and 3.0 and streaming .flv and .f4v.  None work.
I have a big site and do not wan't to redo my template unless I absolutely have to.

It's not 100% clear from your post, but you should be aware that CS5 plugins should not work in CS5.5. Because of a CS5.5 bug, CS5 plugins will load in InDesign 7.5.0, but that is fixed in 7.5.1 so they will not load.
You should lean a bit harder on Virginia Systems. They should be able to tell you how to get them the stack trace from the crash which they should be able to look at and tell you which plugin (if any) is responsible for the crash. I could do it for Mac OS X but I don't know how under Windows. You could start by looking at the Event Viewer, though. That may have some helpful information about the crashes and the faulting module.

  • CS3 to CS5 Issues

Hi from a first time poster!.
Basically my organisation has upgraded fro CS3 to CS5 and we are having a few performance issues.
Can i configure the preferences so that when i pan around a document with lage images or artwork placed in it the screen does not go all jerky?.
Is this something to do with CS5's live draw function?.
Also is it possible to copy and paste images from a CS3 document to a CS5 document?, currently when we try the images are not being recognized in the CS5 document.
    Help greatly appreciated

For the jerkiness go to your preferences and change the live draw to delayed, or if that doesn't help, maybe never.  The place to go is Edit > Preferences > General.
When you try to past from CS3 to CS5 do you have both open in CS5?  Might sound a dumb question but if you have one open in CS3 and one in CS5 it isn't going to work, so even if you have a document you want to keep in CS3 for the purposes of copying just open it in CS5, it wil convert to a CS5 document and you will be able to copy and paste between them.
One last tip, when converting docs to CS5 from CS3, particularly larger ones, there have been quite a few reports of instability, sometimes leading to corruption, but mind you we only see the problems on this forum.  To prevent this happening the best route is to export from CS3 to inx format and open that in CS5.  YOu can do that automatically with whole folders (and sub-folders) of files with the batch convertor script that is my latest favourite, it is made by Peter Kahrel and is free, you'll find it here.  With that you can use it in CS3 to convert a whole batch to inx, then use it in CS5 to convert those inx files to CS5 indd.  Super handy, really fast, and great for mass exports too.

  • Type clipping path of a vector pattern

Trying to mask type with a vector pattern (place a vector pattern in a type clipping path), but nothing seems to be working. Never had issue before. Tried path in front, pattern in front, converting type path to compound path, converting vector to compound path. A couple of times it looked like it worked, but the pattern was invisible within the path. Illustrator CS6, on a Mac. Help is appreciated, thank you.

1 Keep the type live no rason to outline it.
2 place the pattern in the back (behind the text)
3 select both the patternand the text
    4 Object>Clipping Mask>Make
    If you outline the text
then after you outlined the text
1.while the text group is still selected go to Object Compund Path>Make (even though it already says it is a compound path tht actually refers to the individual letter forms)You need the whole group to be a compund path.
2 Make sure the pattern is behind the text and select both
3 Now make your clipping mask

  • Windows XP 64 and Type 1 Fonts, CS3?

We have recently upgraded to CS5 and have installed Windows XP 64 on our graphics departments computers. They had previously had the 32 bit version of Windows installed and had no problems with Type 1 fonts. We have CS3 and CS5 installed until everyone has been upgraded to CS5. They are unable to see the Type 1 fonts when using CS3 but can see them in CS5 and other programs.
Does anyone know if I there is a fix to allow the fonts to be used in CS3?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    (1)     Adobe does not officially support Windows XP 64-bit with any of its applications. XP 64-bit was more of an experiment for Microsoft than a real operating environment. Vista 64-bit was the first reliable 64-bit desktop version of Windows supported by Adobe. At this point, we most strongly recommend that you immediately move to Windows 7 64-bit which is fully supported by Adobe.
    (2)     There is no fix for the problem you encountered. The workaround is to put the Type 1 fonts in the Creative Suite's private font directory.

  • Fonts different between CS3 and CS5 on Win7 system using the same fonts directory

I have several files created in Fireworks CS3 that work fine. Fonts are all  installed in the system directory on my Win7 box.  This used to be a WinXP Pro  box.
I can load a file into Fireworks CS3 without a single issue and the text all  looks perfect. The way it should.  Close CS3, open CS5 and load the same file  and CS5 tells me I have to update my fonts.  Why?  Same system, same fonts in  the same fonts directory. Only thing that's changed is that I'm opening the  file(s) in CS5.
The fonts do not look the same in CS5.  Am I going to have to redo every  Fireworks CS3 file so that it looks correct in CS5? If so, why?
    -- Bob
Here's a sample image the way it's supposed to look. The Swift gets hosed. PlazaDUtil is the font. I'd hate to have to redo all my logo files.

Prior to CS4 Fireworks used the Macromedia type engine. From CS4 forward, adobe introduced the adobe type engine to improve text handling/integration between FW AI and PS. As a result moving CS3 files over to cs4 forces FW to update the fonts.

  • Can't convert type to outlines

I recently purchased CS5, and find there's a feature I'd like in Illustrator that doesn't appear to work. The option Type>Create Outlines is grayed out. I'm using Mac OS X 10.6. Is this another instance of a feature only available on Windows? Is there another way to convert type to outlines, using LIve Trace or something?
    Thanks

    David,
You may try to close down Illy and press Cmd+Option+Shiftduring stratup, or reversibly Move the folder,
If that does not help, you may look for interfereing applications, see item 7 in Other options

  • InDesign: Type on path won't print

I have Type on Path in Indesign CS3 file that won't print (to any printer) or won't export to pdf.
In Attributes this object is checked printable. Other objects from the same layer print well.
I tried to remove any styles from  the text, paragraph, and to remove object style. there is no filling on the path.
I tried to align text left, right, in the middle. It still won't print.
Anybody knows how to fix it or is it just an InDesign bug?
    Thank you

I reposted the file. Thank you for your time
Did you try printing the new file on your end? It could easily be that whatever caused the corruption was the same problem and the trip throuh .inx will have fixed it.

  • Will CS3 and CS5 run on new Macs?

I need to run Indesign and Photoshop in both CS3 AND CS5. Will they run on a new Mac Pro OS? Do I need Rosetta? I hear it will work on Lion OS 10.6, but not the upcoming Mountain Lion OS 10.7. True?

    Bob writes:
I would also say that it would be best to do a clean install of Mountain Lion if you’re not buying a new machine with it preinstalled. O/S upgrades are a crapshoot and if you’ve already done one or two upgrade installs you have a lot of left over crap on that drive.
It's worth a reminder that reasonable people disagree on this point.
In my considered opinion, the immense hassle of attempting to preserve all your customizations and to reinstall all of your 3rd party software is huge, and and generally that administrative pain (and risk) is not offset by the potential elimination of potentially unknown and poorly-understood problems.
Further, unlike in the Windows world, the general expectation in the Mac community (that is, among users, among developers, and from the Vendor--Apple) is that you will do the migration. This means the migration is that path that is tested and it tends to work pretty well. This is not to say that migrating is expected to be more reliable than a clean installation (though when we start to talk about the reliability of "getting work done," which involves the reliability of applications and availability of your data, that is very different question than the reliability of the base operting system, with no additional software).
So choose carefully, and whatever you do, keep a backup.
