Converting VHS into my FCE project

I know this may not be the right place for this question, but I am sure some of you have had this challenge before. I am trying to convert VHS to DVD using my camcorder and an S plug. So I can place the footage in a project I am working on. When I hit the record button I am just recording a black screen. I feel this is something I am over looking, because I have done this in the past (with a different camcorder and VCR machine) but now it is not working.
I am plugging the S jack into the machine and then the camcorder. Then hitting play on the VCR and while the camera is in the playback mode I am hitting record on that and it is recording the black screen instead of the VHS. Does ANYONE have any ideas? I need to get this project done asap, so I need to get the footage recorded asap.

To be able to get material into a miniDV (tape) Camera there are some musts.
• Camera must have analog in (as written previously)
• The eventual SCART connector that came with Camera is one way - to VHS-VCR and
not the other way around. This needs a SCART connector WITH an In and Out switch.
If Camera doesn't have analog in. Then You need an Analog/Digital Box as Canopus ADVC 55, 110 or 300.
There are several others to cheaper and expencive.
ADVC 55 - one way from VHS-VCR to Mac via FireWire
ADVC 110 - both ways - This is very good because You then can connect a small TV
and in real time judge quality while editing in FinalCut (and iMovie up to HD 6)
ADVC 300 - timebase correction - Very helpful if tapes are old (with drop-outs)
(resulting in less baby-sitting - Drop outs stops import = restart)

Importing music to my FCE project

Hello,
I am having trouble importing a song from itunes. I have put the song into itunes for the purpose of importing it into my FCE project. I save the song on itunes, go to FCE and import file, gives me the selection up until the song and it is not highlighted.
Should I be doing this another way?

How could I export FCE project into XML format?

Hello,
I recently decided to upgrade from Final Cut Express to Final Cut Pro X. But I don't seem to be able to export my FCE unfinish projects. That is because FCE does not export into XML format !!!
Does anyone knows how to have FCE to generate a XML file? Or to have the FCP file format converted into a XML file format?

If you are editing in FCE4, then you can open your FCE Project in FCP6 or FCP7 and do the .xml export there. Once you have that .xml file, you need to use the software 7toX to convert the file to FCP-X.

Videotape movies (old VHS) into FCE

Is there an easy way to capture VHS videotape images from the old tapes into FCE for editing please?
I have a few sections from older movies that I'd like to incorporate into a current project in FCE4. Can it be done? I have tried placing the movie camera in front of the TV or the projected images on the screen from the multimedia projector, but the quality is quite poor (understandably). The focus, audio, brightness and keystone effects are issues.

Connect VCR to A/D-box via SCART---RCA (EU) and RCA---RCA (US) and set SCART switch to out. The A/D-box may have an in resp. out side. Connect to in-side. Set A/D-box Input selector to Analog in.
My ADVC-300 has two sets of dip-switches on bottom - for PAL they are set to
Left one number 6 is set to on - all others in off state.
If 6 in off state then it is NTSC
From A/D-box via FireWire 6-pin to 6-pin or 9-pin end to Mac FW port.
Now turn A/D-box or Camera ON
Start iMovie or QT or FinalCut
Select Import or Capture
Re-wind tape in VCR or Camera
Start - Play on VCR or Camera
Import or Capture Now
See that the saved movie is collected on a hard disk with sufficient space
1 hour needs 13.5Gb
8 hour needs 105-110Gb (eg a 240VHS tape recorded in LP-mode)
How to store the material
• As is - Icon with a Star on it (iMovie HD6)
• As a set of DVDs
• Collected in a folder - FinalCuts Scratch folders + Movie document on an external/second hard disk
• As DiskImages
• Back to miniDV tapes
Do not use LP-mode with miniDV tapes. Two major problems.
a. When Camera dies - so does the tapes - Can’t be playbacked securely on other Cameras even if
brand and type number is the same - tolerances is to small
b. Audio goes out of sync due to 12-bit recording and/or drop outs in video makes video and audio
not walk in pace/parallell. Resulting in a very tough re-sync problem.

Take the clip or clips. Export as a self-contained QuickTime Movie and move it to the other computer.

1. Copy/Paste Webdynpro components in the new project as was suggested before
2. Or create new project, copy _comp folder from old project to the new one. But, do not forget to update .dcdef & .project files manually after this. You have to set the correct project name in .dcdef and set the correct local project path in .project.

Unfortunately you can not go from FCP to FCExpress. You can go backwards from say FCP7 to FCP6 or FCP 5 using XML's. The XML version depends on which FCP you have.

Help! FCE project files converted to unix executable files

I recently added a USB external drive and put my FCE project files on it. When I rebooted, the files now are unrecognizable by Final Cut Express as project files. In the finder they are now recognized only as unix executable files. Is there any way to reverse this problem. I really can't afford to lose all that work! Thanks

How is the drive formatted? If it's not Mac formatted you may have a problem. It may be recoverable. How many project files are you talking about? What about the media?

You can't open FCE projects in FCPX. If you can open a copy in FCP7 and export an XML file.

Converting avi files for FCE

Hi,
I have a ton of avi files that I need to convert for editing in FCE.
My goal: to get my avi clips into FCE so they don't have to be rendered in the timeline and everytime an edit is made. I've read several posts which suggests mpeg streamclip. My avi format is: Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions DVI ADPCM, Mono, 22.050 kHz FPS: 29.97, size: 640 x 480 pixels (this is the format listed when I open the clip in quicktime). My my final output of this FCE project is to view on HDTV (16:9) via dvd, so the best quality is what I would like.
My questions:
Is streamclip what I should be using?
And what settings should I use in streamclip to convert the avi files? (my guess would be: quicktime movie for the format) I've been trying different options under quicktime movie and the conversion leads to a jerky choppy video.

Importing VHS into Imovie - file size question

The novice is back so bear with me please.
I'm using the Canopus ADVC-55 to import a 2 hour VHS into imovie so that I can convert it to DVD in iDVD. However, the file size is so massive that its eating up my hard drive. If I get an external hard drive, can I move the imovie project I'm working on to the external drive and will I still be able to use the imovie application even if the actual application is on the main hard drive? I just figure because of file limitations when working with digital files on my hard drive, it might be more practical to get a 200gig external but I want to make sure that I can still use the imovie application from it.

If you do get an external drive, make sure it's formatted Mac OS Extended or it may not work properly with iMovie.

Audio Glitch on FCE project

Hi, I am very green to Macs and FCE. I am working on a FCE project where I imported the audio (I am muting audio from film clips), and I noticed that at various points in the project there is a audio glitch (like a skip). I checked the original mp3 and it is good. I tried to import the sound again into a new audio track, but the glitch is still there and in the same locations. Has anyone encountered this? Any idea on how to fix it?
Also, does multiple layer of video add to the file size if you are not using the video?

You should convert your audio to AIFF at the same sample rate as your Sequence. See this link:

When I convert a trailer to a project and add content, how can I get the music track to repeat longer

Hey fellow Apple Geniuses - I just got the latest iMovie11 so excited for the new trailer feature, only to discover that these teenie weenie movie trailers are not near long enough for my taste, however I do like the cool transitions and layouts, so I discovered that I can convert the trailer to a project and then add more content, which I am doing right now. I need help though with the audio track... Does anyone know the secret to getting the 43 second music track to repeat, since this particular track (Friendship2) is not showing as an option in my iTunes/iMovie licensed audio to be able to keep dragging more into the movie? Importing VHS into iMovie

I just bought and hooked up a Canopus ADVC-110 between a TV/VCR combo and my computer. Several questions:
1. When I first hooked up the canopus, the iMovie project I had been working on began displaying this message when I would open the project: " The camera you have connected is a different video standard from your project. You can edit but you will not be able to capture any new clips or export to camera". It didn't seem to affect importing digital video clips or still photos, so I just continued without worry.
2. Now that I am TRYING to import VHS tape, when I am in my current project, nothing happens with I click the camera button and turn on my TV/VCR combo. I didn't know WHAT was wrong....until....
3. I opened a new blank project. Suddenly, I could import video just fine. So I thought I'd try editing the clip in the blank project and then just copying it into my current project. When I tried that I got the following message: The DV file Clip is the wrong video standard and cannot be imported into this project. What is going on!?!?
4. Lastly, I just noticed that at the top of my iMovie project it says the title and then says (PAL). Is that normal? Is that going to burn to a DVD okay? I thought North America had to be NTSC instead of PAL.

I think there are small switches (DIP-switches) on the Canopus. Make sure the switches are set to NTSC.
