Converting video cam tape file to digital?

Before I go buy or borrow someone's digital video camera to record a digital video file, I thought I'd ask if my iMac has some ability to translate a video tape file to a digital file? IOW, is there a way to input video from my older camera and then save it as a digital file? (I hope that was clear.)

No, you'll need something to convert the analog file into a digital signal. There are various options, among them most recent digital video camera will do this, or you can get something like this:

  • Converting video to swf files in flash for breeze

    Hello,
I am using Adobe Premiere Pro 2 and wanted to know what the
best video codec and audio codec to use when I export to create a
video file to insert into flash to convert to a swf file for
breeze? I am having trouble with the audio, must I demux it first
before I put into Flash? Or is there a audio codec that I can use
in Premiere so I don't have to demux the audio?
Also, when I insert a swf file in breeze plug-in for PPT, it
does not play the video or give me the controll by presentation
playbar I checked off. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, could use
    some help, thanks.

    hi,
if you work with the player component the .flv is not
    embedded in the
swf. In Breeze you can only insert a single flash file I
    suppose, so the
attached .flv file won't show up.

  • Need to convert video and audio files in high quality

Hi to all, i need to convert file types such as .AVI, .WMV and .MOV and keep the high quality, but i dont have or know any software to do this, are there any good options out there?
I don't really want to use a trial version, thanks.

I've used FFMpegX for my conversions. I've never looked at them on a large screen to see how well the video quality held on, but they look fine on my MacBook.

  • Converting video to flash file (newbie ?)

Hi I was trying to convert an 14 mb mpeg 4 video file to an FLV file using the flash encoder.  The resulting flash file to my surprise was 18 MB
I was expecting a very small file that I could post on the web.  Can someone tell me what Im doing wrong.  Im using the CS3 version.
I also need to convert .MOV files.  Do I need a separate conversion software tool?

Sorenson Squeeze has a "watch folder" option, so they
probably have it set up to automatically convert from the upload
    folder into a destination folder.

  • Converting video-multiple VOB files?

Does anyone know how to combine a series of vob files into 1 continuos vob file so that videora can convert it into a single mpeg4? When I use dvd decrypter to convert a dvd-r disc into its vob files, it breaks it up into more than 1 vob file, even though I recorded it as just 1 chapter, about 25 minutes in length?

Follow this, and you should be ok http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html

  • Any recommendations for video camera?

    Hi all
thought this would be a good place to ask for advice
My church is looking into getting a grant to buy some equipment and one of the pieces that is required is a video camera.
One of the people involved has plans on using it to podcast our coffee house and summer concert series that we host.
As i am the videographer and webcaretaker, i have input, but my experience is limited to a high end Sony videocam used for broadcasting (which I used in a course i taught 10 years ago) ... one extreme ... and the Canon Elura dv video cam that i own (and use when I tape the Christmas lessons service) and, the other extreme: my Panasonic Z28 digital camera that i use to tape clips of concerts to post on our website.
    Here are MY requests:
    • it must also be able to tape to a card, so that i can easily copy .mov files to my computer for the little mini bits that I put on the website (much more convenient than capturing video for this purpose)
    • tape, not dvd or hard drive, unless you can give me a good reason not to
    • can plug in cables for sound systems, or at least an external mic
    • price around $3000 (Canadian)
    • but a 'pre-owned' one might be a good value, too
Any and all recommendations are welcome

Um, you are basically saying that it must be Blue, but it can't be blue unless you give me a good reason.
Well, that's just being silly and unhelpful:
    • some video cameras tape to a hard drive only .... i find that useless: it limits you in size and or quality of what you can tape.
    • Others use dvd: from what i understand this compresses the data, affecting quality ...
However, tapes contain raw and uncompressed footage.
That's my understanding of these media.
Now, if you can give me a reason to use dvd or hard drive video cameras that corrects a misunderstanding that I possibly have, then please do so.
Besides, what 'blue' are you referring to: cerulean? azure? prussian? cobalt? ultramarine? As you can see, limiting oneself to 'blue' is not really a limitation.

  • I am looking to buy the least expensive high resolution digital video camera to convert/record 8mm video tapes.

Hi. Thanks for your help in advance.
I am looking to buy the least expensive digital video camera with the highest resolution I can find in order to use it to record 100s of old (1960s era ) reel to reel video tapes. I am told that in order to do that I must record the "old" video onto a new platform, which means I will set up an "old" projector and play the tapes and record the video on a digital camera. I only want to do this once so I want the highest resolution format I can find. Therefore, I am looking for a camera to purchase. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello Lance,
Transferring film to digital video is a complex, challenging process.  To cut to the chase, the best way to do this is to engage a firm that specializes in film-to-digital transfer services.  There are quite a few around.  Costs for 8mm transfer range anywhere from about $0.15 - $0.40 per foot and there are usually significant discounts for bulk projects.  Plus, depending on the cost of the video camera you would otherwise consider buying, you may find it costs less overall to use a service than do it yourself.
You also mentioned that you "want the highest resolution format" ...  Once you project 8mm/Super8 film onto a screen the effective resolution will not even be what we might consider "standard-def" in digital video.  And the larger the projected image the lower & lower the effective resolution regardless of what kind of video camera you might use.
A transfer service, however, directly scans each frame to digitize them and depending on the math the resulting digital image may technically be as "good" as 720p ... but the overall image quality will still be limited by the quality of the original film ... and still probably not up the level of "standard-def" digital video ... but way better than anything you could obtain with a homebrew projector-screen-videocam setup.
Why DIY?  Well, it sounds inexpensive and simple.  But in reality it is a very time consuming way to get relatively low quality transfers no matter how high-end or expensive a video camera you use.  I can share more details if necessary, but DIY film-to-video transfer is not the way to go if you are really interested in quality results.

  • How to convert Hi8 to iMac? Have 2 video cameras: Sony CCD-YRV98 video Hi8 and Panasonic SDR-SW20 digital video. Please provide the steps to convert to iMovie '11. Also, is there a way to burn in blu-ray?

I already have two video cameras. One older (Sony) in Hi8 and the less older one (Panasonic) which is digital. Between the two can it be accomplished to transfer the Hi8 video on tapes to iMovie?
I have the newer iMac 21.5" and also would like to know if it is possible to record this on blu-ray. The iMac didn't come with iDVD, which means I have to get that uploaded. Any other suggestions?

    Sony Hi8 camcorder
No it is an Analog Camera - and have NO Digital-Out
I may be made a Wrongful assumption in that the - Panasonic digital camcorder - was a Digital 8 Camera.
If it is - it has a Digital Out (FireWire) and can playback the Hi 8 tapes from the other Camera.
If it is a miniDV Camera - it also have a FW-out (Digital out) - BUT can not play Your Hi 8 tapes.
Then there are not so many ways to do this.
If Your Panasonic digital camcorder - Has Analog in RECORDING ( not all have this, it was an EXTRA Cost ! ) - Then You can playback from the Hi 8 Camera to this and record onto a miniDV tape - to be played and Captured/Imported into Your Mac.
The Panasonic digital camcorder - Might have a feature - Play trough - that makes it possibly to use it as an Analog - Digital bridge - some can do this - But You've not told the exact type/no: etc - So I can not guess.
If this still do not work (The Panasonic digital camcorder do not have an Analog in connection/function)
    - Then You need an Analog/Digita Converting box - from Hi 8 to this A/D-box then to Mac via FireWire.
There are several types and prices - I got a fairly expensive box due to that I've lot's of old VHS tapes in even bad quality. And this - Canopus ADVC-300 - has a function - Timebase Correction - that helps a lot in regard to drop outs and Audio slowly going out of sync. I just keeps perfect even over several Hours of VHS-tapes.
    Yours Bengt W

None of Canon's current camcorders include S-Videos, RCA or other auxiliary inputs.

  • APPLE DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA- We so need one

Who here agrees that Apple should create a video camera of their own. It would solve all of our video camera problems!!!
I really want to find a way to make this suggestion to them!!??
iBook and iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iBook and iMac
iBook and iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   iBook and iMac

    Get a Sony.
I have used Sonys for years as my only camcorder. I have found every one to be a great camera. The only reason I got new ones was that the old ones eventually either wore out or needed to be upgraded for newer technology. I even got one just for working with iMovie, and use the others for recording our family events/occasions.
The mini DV digital camcorders work flawlessly with Macs/iMovie, are not exhorbitantly expensive and are easy to use. Never had to install any software. Every one works right away out of the box.
Be sure to get one of the ones that uses mini DV tapes--iMovie is designed for this type of digital media input. If you try to use the miniDVD or hard drive camcorders, you will lose quality by having to convert those video clips to DV to import into iMovie. Plus it is a pain.
I am currently using Sony DCR HC 26 and 30. They are compact but sturdy. Most important feature is audio/video IN and OUT. Some of the newer models have docking stations to use for importing with Firewire, but I like the ones that just have the Firewire port directly into the camcorder. I don't want to fiddle with having to find more pieces of equipment for importing and exporting movies.
The only problem I ever had with any of my camcorders was not related to an iMovie problem at all, but a known (to Sony) failure of the particular camcorder. It stopped recording...still would import and export my movies, I just couldn't record anything new. Contacted Sony's web site and then their customer service and they had me send it in for a quick repair/replacement part. Works great now!
