Converting Video To Be Playable By ATV

Hello....
Just bought my ATV & now in the mid to organize all video files in order to play using ATV.
Had quite a collections of movies stored in my external drive & saved using 3ivx MPEG-4 format (MPEG-4 video codec) which was not playable by ATV. Read somewhere in the communities that it is recommended to use H.264 codec instead of others. Would appreciate advise from anyone pertaining the simplest way to convert to all these video to H.264 codec.
All movie files are having almost the same details (info from QTP - Movie Inspector), refer below.
Format : 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.5, 720 x 400, Millions AAC, 5.1 (C L R Ls Rs LFE), 48.000 kHz, FPS : 29.97 Data Size : 0 bytes.
Questions ;
1.   What would be the best video format to be used, H.264 or MPEG-4? What is the reason behind it? I'm looking into minimum losses with higher quality video image.
2.   If I want to convert all to H.264 format, how best do I convert all 2 TB storage within the shortest time possible? Or do I need to convert it one by one?
3.   Read somewhere in the forums, it is adviseable to use MPEG Streamclip in order to convert files to H.264 codec. Please confirm this.
4.   Had downloaded the MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 & tried to convert one of the movie. Copy paste it from my external drive. Under MPEG Streamclip pane, open File --> Export To MPEG-4..., choose H.264 as Compression, choose Apple TV 16:9 (SD) under iTunes, Quality 50%, B-Frames, Limit Data Rate to 5 Mbps, Sound : MPEG-4 AAC Stereo Auto 256 kbps, Frame Size : 712 x 400 (16:9), Frame Rate : 30 & Interlaced Scaling. Do I miss anything?
5.   When pressing Make MP4, Create New MP4 File box pop-up & asked me to provide name under Save As & Where. I used the same name but added H264 at the back of the name & wanted to store inside the same external drive, but under different folder (common). When pressed Save, an error box pop-up with message Error :can't create the MP4 file. What had gone wrong?
Please assist.

Hello Marian
Thanks for your prompt response.
I was, luckily, thinking along those lines however I need to find the means to control the video using Javascript. (surfing for a while now with no luck).
Do you know where I may find out how to do this?
Thanks again.
ps checked out "hulu.com" and they wern't able to tream video to my part of the world - abc.com was ok tho!

  • Does iTunes convert video

I added many videos to my library converted in the AppleTv friendly format. When trying to add a video to the iphone, an error says video not playable on iPhone (format issue). Does iTunes itself have the ability to re convert video to iPhone playable format? Or does conversion need to be done with 3rd party software? Im surprised iPhone can not play AppleTv video.

Thanks! You say handbrake does the apple universal? I converted video to the applyTv format because it looks good playing on a big screen using the appleTv device. I don't really want to have multiple copies of the same video and also, how to keep iphone separate from appletv video. Would be nice for itunes to add features to do this. Especially since apple devices, ipad/iphone/appletv/etc all use itunes but have their own specific video requirements. Itunes should know if you registered several types of apple devices to your itunes apple account, and when importing video, auto convert to all required device formats. Then when you plug in one device, only supported video for that device is displayed. Also a popup note that "video in other formats exists in the itunes library, but has not been converted. Do you want to convert? yes/no". Itunes then could convert in the background. And auto organize different video formatted items into their own folder in the library.

  • How can I convert a video to a playable format?

This is a combined iTunes / iPod touch question.
I downloaded a video to iTunes. It is in 3pg format and it and plays perfectly in iTunes. However, when I tried to sync it into the iPod touch, it stopped with the error message that the touch could not play that type of file. So I used the "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone" selection in iTunes and converted it to m4p format. Although this was able to load into the touch, it is corrupted to the point of being impossible to view or listen to. By corrupted, I mean that it "stutters" at a rapid rate. How else might I load the 3pg file into the touch, or how else could I convert it into something that is listenable?

3pg is an odd format... That or I just never seen it before. :P
iTunes just ***** at converting videos. So far all videos I tried converting with iTunes have resulted in the same error you got.
You're better-off using 3rd party apps, and then copying to iTunes, and then copying to the iPod.
Unfortunately I don't know of any conversion programs for Windows.
If you by chance have a mac, this program works great: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flv2itunes.html
The mac version of Handbrake below works great, hopefully the Windows version does, too:
    http://handbrake.fr/?article=download
When converting with handbrake, make sure to use the iPod preset for the out-put video.
    Hope this helps a little.

  • No Audio When Converting Videos For iPod

whenever i convert video files for my ipod they do not have audio. i have tried several programs, and none work. i have read other discussions about this, and found that MPEG Streamclip worked for other people, however whenever i try to convert using this program, it says "Error: Can't Prepare The Movie" Can anyone tell my why i can't convert these videos? i cannot figure it out. thanks alot.

I am not sure what you mean when you ask what the "compression formats" are.The compression formet refers the manner in which the media was encoded and, by extension, how the media must be decoded. I.e., it determines which codec (encoder/decoder or compressor/decompressor) is to be used with the media file.
If you can tell me where to find those i could tell you what they are. I can, however, play the video in itunes, quicktime, and MPEG Streamclip.Simnce the files are playable in QT, the most common place to look for codec information is in the "Show Movie Info" window following the "Format:" entry. E.g., it might say:
    Format: MPEG2 muxed, 640 x 480orFormat: Apple MPEG4 Decompressor, 320 x 240, millions
    AAC, Stereo, 48,000 kHz
i also am not sure if there is audio in the source file.Do you hear any audio when the original file is played? If not and there is no audio track (or "muxed") information, then there may not be any sound for you to convert in the first place.
how do i find out if it is muxed? If it is "muxed," the format entry we say so. In this case blocks of audio data and blockes of video data are interspersed in a single data stream (track). This is the normal way MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 audio/video data is synchronized. In addition, these formats commonly lose their audio content when converted using QT Pro, iTunes, iMovie, FCE, FCP, or other QT based "frame-to-frame" synchronized workflow. (In the case of MPEG-2 in MPEG Streamclip or QT, the QT MPEG-2 component must also be installed in order to convert the video data alone.)
most of my videos that won't convert for an ipod are downloaded from the internet. how can i find out if they are corrupted or incomplete?Internet files should always be considered suspect -- especially if they come from a peer-to-peer source. Messages that indicated QT cannot open an otherwise fully compatible QT format is often the best indication that there is a corruption problem or that the files were improperly closed at one point or another.
most of my videos that won't convert for an ipod are downloaded from the internet. how can i find out if they are corrupted or incomplete?Normally ypu would post them to a web site or FTP storage area and post the URL. If files were downloadedd from a particular web site (e.g., a QT movie trailer), simply post the URL for the particular web page.

  • Convert video

Hi. i just want to know if there is an aplication to convert ANY kind of video format to another kind of video format.
for example: avi to quicktime, or mpg2 to iphone. etc...etc.... working and converting any video format to any format again.
    please !
    thanks a lot !.

Well, there's probably nothing that will convert ANY format to any other, but there are a number that do a wide array of formats. I would suggest VLC, FfmpegX, and MPlayer (use the SVN version from mplayerhq.hu). All of them do a fine job of conversion between formats, and they are all free and open-source.
QuickTime Pro works very well for the codecs it supports, and you can purchase additional codecs for it (Flip4Mac, for example, provides all the Windows Media Player codecs).
The OSS packages work well, but not perfectly. They offer far more encoding features and options than QT, which is wonderful, except that they permit you to convert video with parameters that aren't supported by a lot of playback software. QT, on the other hand, generally encodes video with parameters that it knows will be widely playable, and has fewer controls (for example, ffmpegX allows you to supply a discrete cosine transform matrix, DCT, for the encoding algorithm for MPEG4, whereas QT does not -- mostly because only a hardcore video hacker would know what it is or why you might want to change it from the default).

  • Exporting or Converting video to HTML5 format?

Hi all. I was wondering if there was a way to Export or Convert a video into HTML5 playable formats with Premiere Pro CS5 & CS5.5? ie: .mp4, Theora .OGG, .WebM(vp8)...I tried exporting it before but did not find any options that were suitable. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Jim. I exported the video with the H.264 and it worked in the browsers no problem. Sucks that it doesnt have the other options in Premiere yet but I managed to find a video converter that did the job. Thanks again.

  • Convert Video files in iTunes but no Audio after converting

Hy, do somebody know what is the matter if i want convert Video files in iTunes (8.01) but after converting the files don't have any audio but i can see the movie perfect in iTunes and on ATV ????

Your likely using muxed video such as mpeg1/mpeg2, which is capable of being played back in QT (with the QT mpeg2 playback component in the case of mpeg2 source video) but not able to be converted.
I could well guess which software you should use to undertake your conversions but it would be better if you could provide details of our source video so that we can suggest an appropriate workflow based on that information.
You can use the Inspector window in QT to see this information.

  • Free software to convert video on mac?

When looking for free software to convert some MTS and WMV files to play on my blackberry Z10, I found two software talked about most by people online, Handbrake and MacX Video Converter Free Edition.
Handbrake, I know it is popular among people, could convert any video to MP4 (M4V), MKV and convert videos for popular mobile players including iPad, iPod, Apple TV, PSP, etc.
While MacX Video Converter Free Edition is able to convert between HD videos MKV, M2TS, AVCHD and SD videos AVI, MP4, MOV, FLV etc. It also can easily convert videos to iPad 5, iPhone 5S, iPod, Samsung, HTC, PSP, Microsoft, Xbox and ,more as well as convert pictures into a slideshow video.
Anyone tried both of them? Which one is better?

When I download standard Video Podcasts H264/MPEG4 does the Itouch need to Transcode them? Example on the Creative Zen V plus downloading the latest edition of Cnet Live it took 13 minutes to convert the file. Will files downloaded from Itunes be about the same size from the download to the player? Example a 200Meg file downloaded to the Zen V Plus will convert to 1 Gig or more!
    Thanks for your help.

I have here the converted file: http://www.mediafire.com/?mnm0dcz3zyt

As David said - find a more realworld test case. Apple's trailers are by all rights QT files, meaning that they will not necessarily be transcoded at the MPEG stream level, but instead fully re-compressed from the expanded pixel buffer - you may not see artifacts, but they are there nonetheless and will influence the quality of subsequent encodings, even more so on something as colorful and high contrast as this particular trailer... Also it seems you have made a moosh of your framerates. I'm not sure about the concrete example, but most Apple trailers are 24p native.

  • Display won't sleep when converting video to iphone in itunes

Whenever I convert video files to iphone under the advanced menu in itunes, my display wont sleep and the screensaver will not come on. I tried using the hot corners and the display sleeps for a few seconds and them awakens. Since conversions can take quite a while, is there any alternate method to sleep or temporarily shut off the display. I have also tried the sleep display widget and it does nothing for me.
    Thanks!

if it's still within 12 months hardware warranty call apple and have tech support diagnose the fault. If it turns out to be hardware related -which mine was- SEND IT BACK. IF it's hardware, there's almost zip you can do except wait longer and get closer to the end of your warranty.
    My sleep issue...
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4126127#4126127
was hardware related and I ended getting a refund. Admittedly I have had a REALLY duff machine and the sleep issue was the last in a run of hardware malfunctions but if I never pursued Apple regarding a seemingly innocuous issue I would have come to the end of my warranty and been stuck with it. Now I have my money back - enough to buy a 17" C2D with a 200GB HD for less than I bought the original 15 in CD for. If it's broken get it fixed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Convert Video Switch in Desktop Software

What happens when I use  the convert video switch in the Desktop Software when I am syncing videos to and from playbook.  Having problems playing video clips tagged as AVI.  Get error message on Playbook when I go to play the clips.  Assuming not a true AVI or using a 3rd party codec or something along that line.  Will play on computers but not the Playbook.  Will the convert video switch in the Desktop Software solve the problem.  Tried to use but it appeared to start to "convert"  all videos in file to upload to Playbook so I cancelled.  Any suggestion?  Thanks, Brian

  • Converting Video to iPod, can you change name of file

When you convert Video to iPod format, can you change name of the new file or put some "marker" so one can tell which is the orginal and which is the new file?
Currently it is difficult to tell between the orignal and the new file.
    thanks in advance
    Rohit

You'd probably be better off doing this sort of editing in iTunes, and letting it move the files appropriately.
Go to the preferences, Advanced tab, and check the box to 'Keep iTune Music folder organized'. Then any changes you make to song names or other info (within iTunes) will automatically be applied.
