Converting video to .mov

Can Quicktime Pro convert video from one format to .mov format? I have a few mpeg files that I would like to put up on our webpage, but our provider only supports Quicktime Streaming. Therefore I'm guessing that the files would have to be in .mov format.
If this is possible, then while converting, can you change the viewer size. Say from 800x600 to 320x480 or something along those lines?
Any help would be greatly apreciated! Thanks in advance!

For the most part if QT Player Pro can display a movie, video or what ever you want to call it, it can convert it to other formats. There are a couple of exceptions. For muxed mpegs (mpeg-1 and mpeg-2, but not mpeg-4) QT cannot export the sound from the file although it will export the video.
There is a workaround for that limitation. Windows users can use this freeware to convert meg-1 files to uncompressed avi, from which QT will export both sound and video. Open the mpeg-1 in VDub and use Save as Avi in the File menu to save it as uncompressed avi. The only catch there is that uncompressed avi files are very large so you may have to do the conversion in small segments
VirtualDub
One other exception is that the creator of a .mov file can cause a flag to be set that prevents QT from editing or exporting the file to other formats. Those are rather rare, however.

  • Converting Videos Using Movie ToGo/No Audio

Have a movie that plays in Qicktime and itunes but it won't transfer to new video iPod. I am using a Mac with 10.4.3. I ran to movie using the Digigami MovieToGo converter. Video converted fine but has no audio. I did "Get Info" on the movie file and see it is formatted as a MPEG1 Muxed. It seems this converter (for the Mac) can not convert a movie with both video & audio with a Muxed format. Any ideas for a converter that can indeed handle a Muxed format.

  • How can I convert Music Videos or Movies to play in iTunes ?

I am running Windows 7 Professional and I have alot of Music Videos and Movies that I am wanting to play in the new iTunes ( 11.1.5.5 ). I am trying to find a good Program that can convert alot of these so I can import then into iTunes . I do not have Quick Time installed on my computer , to see if they will play on Quick Time. I play most of them with the VLC Player . My computer just will not give me the option of playing most of them with iTunes , so I realize that most of them are not compatible with iTunes .

  • Convert Video TS to .mov

I have made a number of videos and burnt them to disc.
The original iMovieProjects are on my external 300GB HD that has gone belly.
I want to convert these movies from disc to .mov videos so that I can use these videos in my family tree but I cannot select them off of disc because they only show Audio TS and Video TS.
Is there any way that I can convert them to .mov, or some type of file from which I can then convert to .mov?

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife vers. ≤6 apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
Toast 6/7/8/9 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    old apps:
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in

After I upgraded to Mavericks, Quicktime has had to convert MPEG-4 videos to .mov.... Why? Is there a way to stop that or to change the settings?
Your question requires more information. What does MPEG-4 mean to you? What file container and which compression formats are you referring to here? Is the MPEG-4 content "standard" or proprietary. Basically, depending on the file container and the specific content, QT X v10.3 may initiate a conversion ever where the individual data tracks are fully QT compatible. Proprietary compression formats will definitely do this. In some cases, the audio or video in one source container may simply be passed through to the MOV file while in another source container, QT X v10.3 forces a conversion of that same data track. In short, there are too many variables at this point to properly answer your question or attempt to duplicate your workflow.

  • MOV vs. DV in converting video 8

i was in the midst of converting my old video 8 camcorder tapes to DV files by playing my camcorder through a analog-to-digital converter and saving the output in imovie. unfortunately, my camcorder failed and is only outputing black & white video. so, i'm trying to figure out the very best way to complete this project with my number one priority being maintaining as high quality (as high as it can be for video 8) video and audio as i can in the conversion and editing process so that i can avoid lossy steps and maintain long-term flexible format for future storage.
i've been trying to understand all the complicated options. most of the commercial conversion services seem to convert video 8 to mpeg-2 which would involve multiple lossy steps from conversion to my editing. i'm having trouble finding services that convert video 8 to full digital (uncompressed, lossless) output (like DV, i think). one company will convert to MOV format. i'm trying to understand how this is different from DV. i understand it's a lossless conversion and that it's a container for DV. but is it true that imovie won't import MOV? if i need a conversion from MOV to another format (like DV?), is this a lossy step? is there any quality disadvantage to MOV vs. DV? i'd really appreciate any clarification as i'm having trouble figuring out these details from all my reading so far.

As stated, the quality you get is only as good as your source. Analog footage is still lower quality than digital. That said, my digital version of VHS footage looked better than the original.
I converted all my old analog VHS and Hi-8 tapes to DV footage using a miniDV camcorder. But, instead of connecting it directly to my computer, I did it in two steps. First, I recorded the analog tapes to miniDV tapes using a miniDV camcorder. I have a Sony and it does have a CTRL/REC button in Playback mode, so recording was easy. I connected my Hi-8 player to the camcorder and just played it as the camcorder recorded.
Then, I connected the camcorder to my computer and imported the .DV footage from the miniDV tapes into iMovie. I am still using iMovie 6, and .dv is its preferred format for video, so it worked beautifully. The VHS video actually looked quite a bit better as digital dv; I thought the Hi-8 footage looked about the same. I chose to use this two-step method because my VHS tapes were already degrading and I wanted to convert them all before they became completely useless. This method allowed me to import the dv footage from the miniDV tapes as I needed it without worrying that the quality would go down if it took me a few months to get to the point where I needed that particular footage.
In addition, I now have all the raw video digitized on tape.
For my purposes of creating DVDs from nicely edited iMovies of our old family photos and videos, this method worked great. I now have a DVD collection of these family treasures from 1890s to June of 2010. I am working on the 2010 iMovies now. It was, of course, much easier to do this with video shot from about 1999 and later after we got our digital camcorder and I did not have to do any conversions.
    Beverly,
What makes you think commercial video conversion house can not do any better than what Ziatron suggested?
Consumers always vote with their wallet especially in this tough economy. Don't you think they would all go out of business if people figured out a cheap and perfect way to convert analog to digital? They would, but some have not.
Secondly, I suspect that the apparent improvement in your analog to digital conversion is probably not due to the conversion, but due to the newer and better HDTV panels with excellent upconversion circuitry. I have several commercial made Hollywood DVDs that played fine on our old Sony CRT tube TV and our new Panasonic Alpha-IPS panel HDTV. Guess what. It looked 2x better on the Alpha panel. In fact, digital photos played on the Alpha panel looked heck a lot sharper and vibrant than an old tube TV. Also, the LCD display on your camcorder does not display a high resolution video image. Modern LCD panels on some digital compacts with 920k pixels display can display almost life like videos over the same video footage.
In fact during the mid 80 to 90s, some companies lied to their customers how well their film compact cameras did. Most notable was Minolta. It was a known fact that certain Minolta film compact models can not capture sharp photos. And during that time, Fuji Film came out with their first Frontier photo lab which can do digital manipulation to get a better looking photo. Minolta printed their film with the Frontier and the prints came out sharp, vibrant and with good contrast. Trade shows after shows, I was surprised and baffled as to how a POS camera with a poor lens can somehow magically turn out great photos. Only later when customers bought their cameras and complaints started pouring in that we found out that unless you use a Frontier lab to print photos, normal labs will show how bad their cameras were.
Having said that, analog to digital conversion hinges on how well the source analog video is. The key is a good analog to digital converter, not DV media. Digital is 1 and 0. Analog can be 1, 1.1, 1.2 etc.. Digital conversion need good sampling rate of the analog signal to recreate a digital equivalent. Digital media and compression rate has nothing to do with how good the final conversion looks like. First, the lens on the camcorder has to be of good quality. Likewise, no amount of super analog to digital conversion is going to make a poor lens look like a million bucks. Minolta tried it and got caught! Most people confuse about how well their digital conversion is andd recommended the same process to their friends. Unfortunately, not everyone owns a similar quality camcorder and even with the same process, you will not produce the same results. This has been my experiencce.
One of the advantages of going with a commercial entity is that their equipment should at least be caliberated (meaning head alignment). When is the last time you followed your camcorder service schedule and have the head and transport mechanism checked or serviced? I am willing to bet that the answer would be a no to a lot of people. How can you then achieve the best conversion quality if these variables are not even looked at?

  • Converted .wmv to .mov will no longer play in quicktime

I have converted .wmv to .mov using the quicktime 7.6.4 save as feature and saved them to an external WD hard drive. They have been playing fine for months until yesterday, now i have a black quicktime screen, no sound or audio as the file plays, all that I have changed recently is that i have updated Flip4mac from 2.3.3.2 to 2.3.3.3 and updated Safari to version 4.1. I have run an Onyx maintenance scrypt and disc utility to try a repair a possible permissions or disc error, still no luck. I read an article on the Flip4mac site that suggested I export the file in quicktime, this has not worked. When viewing the files info it states the files codecs are windows media audio 9 standard*, windows media video 9 standard". After reading some other posts I installed Perian, but still no luck. If anyone can help to get these movie files operational again please advise.

  • Free software to convert video on mac?

When looking for free software to convert some MTS and WMV files to play on my blackberry Z10, I found two software talked about most by people online, Handbrake and MacX Video Converter Free Edition.
Handbrake, I know it is popular among people, could convert any video to MP4 (M4V), MKV and convert videos for popular mobile players including iPad, iPod, Apple TV, PSP, etc.
While MacX Video Converter Free Edition is able to convert between HD videos MKV, M2TS, AVCHD and SD videos AVI, MP4, MOV, FLV etc. It also can easily convert videos to iPad 5, iPhone 5S, iPod, Samsung, HTC, PSP, Microsoft, Xbox and ,more as well as convert pictures into a slideshow video.
Anyone tried both of them? Which one is better?

When I download standard Video Podcasts H264/MPEG4 does the Itouch need to Transcode them? Example on the Creative Zen V plus downloading the latest edition of Cnet Live it took 13 minutes to convert the file. Will files downloaded from Itunes be about the same size from the download to the player? Example a 200Meg file downloaded to the Zen V Plus will convert to 1 Gig or more!
    Thanks for your help.

Videos must be in a format that iTunes and the iPod can accept. See:

If your videos are not on the appropriate format, you'll have to convert them. Search this forum for "video convert" and you should find a number of threads about converting videos for use with an iPod.

  • ITunes Videos (Both Movies and TV Shows) are skipping/ studdering.

iTunes Videos (Both Movies and TV Shows) are skipping/ studdering.
These videos were taken from my hard drive, converted with Format Factory, then placed in itunes.
ON ipad the videos playback perfectly, but in itunes itself it fails drastically.
Same problem happens with quicktime. If i open these videos up with quicktime, it studders and skips, while if i open it with VLC, it works fine.
I have already disabled 3d acceleration, which helped a very small bit.
The Rest of itunes runs smoothly, just video playback is screwed
    Specs:
    HP Envy 14
Intel i5 quad core processor 2.53 ghz
    6 gb ddr3 ram
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Itunes 10.5.1
    Quicktime 7.7.1

    Update
It turns out that the reason for not playing TV shows and movies is not the network.
Something happened with the files while copying them from the Macbook to the NAS station.
I noticed that after copying a TV show from the NAS Station back onto the Macbook Air drive; it was not possible to import that file into iTunes. iTunes ignored importing that file.
On the other side the TV shows will be played by Quicktime, either from the NAS station or from the Macbook.
It might be important to mention that the NAS station is not OSX formatted.
Does someone know what happened ?

I have tried a couple of different conversion programs to convert a wmv file to mov or mp4, and all seem to result in a viewable mp4, but when I import into final cut and try to put the footage into my sequence, it won't render.
