Converting Video(VHS-8mm) to DVDs

I have a macbook pro 17". I wish to convert video (vhs/8mm/vhsc/betamax) to DVD disks. What software and hardware do I need to buy in order to do this. I really need guidance with this.
Many Thanks, Jasu Nayee ([email protected])

I use two different ways to achieve this, depending on the situation.
1. The slow way (but you can edit your stuff, add transitions etc in iMovie or FCP):
Hook up a your source to the analog inputs of a DV camera.
Hook up the DV camera to your Mac.
Import with IMovie or FCP.
Export to iDVD or Compressor/DVDStudio.
Burn DVD.
2. The faster way (but you can only do limited edits in DVDStudio):
Buy a stand-alone DVD recorder.
Hook up your source, record your stuff.
Extract the MPEG2 stream and Dolby Digital audio with the freeware MPEG Stremclip.
Import the streams into DVDStudio (you can then do simple cut edits).
Multiplex and burn to DVD.
Cheers,
Rabbe

  • PRE9 - burn old non HD video (VHS/8mm) to blu ray to take avantage of blu ray capacity?

I've got a lot of old VHS and 8mm video I'm burning to DVDs using pre9.  I'm creating tons of DVDs in the process.  Since blu rays have much more capacity than a DVD, is it possible to use pre9 to burn the old videos to blu ray as non HD and fit many hours on each blu ray?

You  could certainly burn the VIDEO_TS folders from each DVD as a data folder. Software Players should be fine with that, but I'm not sure about hardware players. You would probably find that some BR players will allow you to select from various folders, other players won't.

  • Converting old vhs movie to dvd

I have an old video on vhs format that we want to view on our dvd player. How do I convert this so that we can view it?

    ...a couple of options here.
    1. Buy a VHS/DVD combo unit that has a built in DVD recorder.
    http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&upc=2724271605&pid=_Froogle
However, Ive never been a fan of the combo units.
    2. Buy or borrow a seperate VHS player and buy a DVD recorder such as the Toshiba D-R400 and make your transfers. This will be the most cost-effective way- VHS players are cheap.
    3. Buy or borrow a VHS player and import it into your FCP with a converter box such as a matrox card, or first make a transfer to DV and then import. This option, in my opinion is overkill and time consuming. However, you would have more control over adding music, chapters, ect.
    4. Have the transfers done for you by a local A/V company.
If you have only one VHS tape, I would probably take it to a local A/V company and get it transfered to DVD for approx $30...
    Hope this helps- Mike

  • Converting VHS-C to DVD through I Movie

I have been converting my VHS-C home movies to DVD using I Movie, some of the DVD's will work in my DVD player and some will not.  It shows it is a Data Disc and "file format is not supported".  Any suggestions as to why one would work and another would not?  Could it be the length of the DVD?

I have done lots of that.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300.  With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 11 is a "lossless" combination.

  • Converting digital video and photos to dvd

I have seen a product advertised as a device that can convert videos & images from your digital camera directly to a DVD for playback. I have found it on the Hammacher Schlemmer site and wondered if anyone has experience with the device and if the DVD once created works on the imac. I want to be able to manipulate the DVD in imovie to create a customized dvd without having to use the 3 step process of getting the video off of my digital video camera and converting it to DV on my imac. If you haven't seen this product is there something else out there that you could recommend? It also advertises it can take your old VHS tapes and burn them on DVDs.
Appreciate any advice given to the novice here.

Thanks Tom.  I recently acquired a copy of the last version of iDVD, but have not had a chance to install it and try it out.
And it will actually be possible for viewers to download individual photos from the slideshow?  I figured that might be the trickiest part of all this.
Almost forgot,  I also need to be able to put music with the photos.

  • Converting my VHS tapes to a DVD using a Canon Elura 100 camcorder

I'm new to iMovie and this discussion board
I am trying to convert my VHS tapes to my powerbook G4 using iMovie 3.03. I've connected the wires correctly, I've tried it with a tape in the camcorder and without a tape. iMovie shows the camera connected, but I do not see the video from the VHS tape on my laptop. I changed the AV DV to "on" like the instructions stated.
#1 do I need to upgrade to iMovie 6?
#2 Anyone know of the common problems associated with this? Specifically with the Canon Elura 100
    G4 power book   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Karsten!
Thanks for the response. Yes, I am able to import from my camcorder/miniDV to my laptop. I've also made sure I don't have any other devices connected except for the power cord on the camcorder and my latop, which shouldn't matter right?
I have set up my camcorder to my VCR and tried to record on my camcorder, but that did not work either. I did not check in the manual if I had it connected right, or the settings right with this process. I'll try again and check with the manual. Also, I'm going to get iMovie 6 sometime this week, maybe that might make a difference?
    Thanks again

Of course you'll also need some kind of software to actually burn the DVD.

  • HT1382 Is there anyway to convert video taken by ipad and burn it to a DVD that can play on DVD player?

Is there anyway to convert video taken by ipad and burn it to a DVD that can play on DVD player?

    Persius,
Nearly every DVD that will play on a set-top player *should* play on a computer, provided two things:
1.) the computer has a DVD player that can handle that flavor of DVD media, DVD RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD DL, etc.
2.) the computer has a software player installed. This feature has been removed from some common media players. You may need to locate, download and install a separate software player.
There could be another discussion on interlaced vs progressive scan media, but I'll let you ask that question.

  • Quality of VHS/8MM imported through DAC 200 anolog converter

I purchssed a data vision DAC-200 to convert my VHS and 8MM tapes and import into iMovie. However, when I import there are breaks in the import and the quality of the import is poor, even though the quality on the TV (VHS) and camcorder is good.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

To tell you the truth I've read complaints/questions about configuring this and several other datavideo units but none about quality.
    Any other suggustions
No, other than double checking other selectable features on the converter.
Is it possible that the DAC - 200 is defective?
Sure, that's a possibility. Or maybe the best quality this unit can produce doesn't meet your expectations.
If either is true I would suggest purchasing an inexpensive Mini DV camcoder w/passthru feature (HD Camcorders will drop in price soon and become the defato, no since in spending a lot of money), then you could record, convert, play etc. (more features than purchasing another converter)
    Note:
If you setup your converter on another computer using the same VHS player/8mm camcorder and input source, you'd have a comparison to base your next decision on.
