Converting WinAmp (M3U) Playlists Into iTunes (XML) Playlists

Hi. I was wondering if someone could help me out with suggestions on converting my old WinAmp (.m3u) playlists into usable iTunes (.xml) playlists?
I have Windows XP Pro (with the latest Windows updates), and a brand new iPod 160 Gig Classic.
I have used WinAmp as my media player for the longest time. The reason that I haven't created playlists in iTunes is because:
It took me years to customize these Winamp playlists exactly how I want them (you know how that is).
iTunes is a huge program that tends to takes up too many system resources on my PC. I have an older PC, and don't have the time or money to invest in a new system, copy files, set it up, etc.
iTunes somehow modifies an mp3 whenever it is played in iTunes ( I can see that it has been modified in the "Date Modified" column, where my mp3 files are located).
Historically - up until the last year or so, iTunes has not had too much of a problem faithfully importing my Winamp playlists into iTunes (to be transferred onto my iPod).
So, I just got off the phone with Apple Technical Support, Tier 2.  I told him that I had the latest version of iTunes (version 10), installed yesterday.
I successfully imported my 90 Gigs of mp3's into the  iTunes "Music Library" without a problem.
The problem arose today when I tried to import one of my WinAmp (.m3u) playlists into iTunes, so that I could copy the playlist over onto my iPod. I've done this dozens of times. I've already tried uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes.
Like I said, I really want to keep these playlists it took a long time to customize the occurrence and frequency of favorite mp3's into those playlists.
The technician said that the latest release of iTunes won't work with Winamp (m3u) playlists.  I asked him if he thought it would work again if I downloaded an older version of iTunes. He said that with the new iPod Classic that I have, it will not work with older versions of iTunes (I have no idea why), so that's out. He suggested Googling an "m3u to xml file converter."
I checked on Google and saw a lot of programs that will convert xml files to m3u file format (for reasons unknown to me), but I haven't had any luck online finding a file converter that will faithfully convert my WinAmp (.m3u) playlists TO iTunes (.xml) playlists to use instead, and make iTunes run smoother. Any suggestions?*
* Keep in mind that I'd really prefer to convert my m3u playlists, rather than create all new iTunes playlists from scratch.
Thanks.

I went back an read some of the comments and it sounds like it only works with older versions of WinAmp.
Try this http://www.topdownloads.net/software/m3u-to-xml-xspf-converter_2_39472.html
or this python script http://users.musicbrainz.org/~matt/xspf/m3u2xspf
or http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Convertors/M3UtoXSPF.shtml
Not sure this one will work since it is looking like the latest iTunes no longer supports m3u file sbut worth a try see http://www.burroak.on.ca/m3u2itunes.html

  • Is it possible to import playlists (m3u format) into iTunes?

I have many playlists formated with Winamp in the order I want to play them.
Can they be imported into iTunes - I'm using an itouch and cannot find anyway to do this.
    Many thanks

    Howdy, Shalom2007!
I don't think there is any way to import M3U format into iTunes. I had an inporting problem with Windows Media Player because some of the songs were in a M3U format. I eventually saved those songs as a WMA and they imported just fine. Also, your probably going to have to recreate your playlists in iTunes when you do get your Winamp songs. I don't think iTunes is going to keep your Winamp playlists together.
    I hope this helps!

  • Importing Windows Media Player playlist into itunes is possible?

    Please Help!
Is there any way to import a WMP(*.m3u, *.txt or whatever) playlist into iTunes?
I just want to know it is possible or not, because I am tired of making same playlists for WMP and iTunes everytime for several devices.

Yes, though as I recall iTunes wants absoulte file paths. You either need to edit the playlist before import or use a script I wrote called ImportM3U which, as a bonus, can convert any unprotected WMA files on the fly and add them to the playlist.
BTW, if you're going to try to get WMP & iTunes to share playlists you'd better disable any options for automatically organizing files. See Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely for more info.

How can I import Windows Media Player Playlists, into iTunes Playlists, with Music . .  for an iPod
We are having no luck with the thousands of songs we have to manualy add to a particular playlist in iTunes alone. .. there must be a simpler way! How can this be done . . . if there is and it's complicated, is the Genius allowed to help us out with this? They seem to only master Mac's only. .  or can they help us? PL E A SE E E  HELLPPP!

    tt2,
Your very helpful and knowledgeable. I for one appreciate all the hardwork and help you have been giving the people on theses lists, especially with the problems associated with the "importing playlists" from windows media. Unfortunately I need more help if you or someone else can provide it. I followed all the steps you have instructed so far in the threads I have seen. Unfortunately nothing so far works for me. Maybe you or someone can help me, I'd really appreciate it. I tried the notepad++ method and when I click on save I always get a notepad file that my iTunes can't do anything with. I click the "convert to UTF-8 without BOM" then click save as and it still saves as a notepad file. I am also unable to find the \n\ file path to replace with my \C:\ filepath. Here is a copy of the first part of one of my playlists:

Now I went and switched the part from  <media src="..\ to <media src="C:\ in all the files in hopes that was where I am supposed to have my drive letter but it didn't seem to help. Please forgive my encoding ignorance if that's what my problem is. I hope you can help.  Thanks in advance.

  • How do i copy an ipod playlist into itunes- the songs are already in my library

how do i copy an ipod playlist into itunes- the songs are already in my library

I found out an easy way....
With iPod connected to iTunes, right click on the iPod playlist you want to export, choose the Export option on the menu that appears.
iTunes will prompt for a location and format to save the file.  Save playlist as an XML file using whatever name and location you want (I saved as "songs.XML" to my desktop).
Then, in iTunes, go to File - Library - Import Playlist and selet the XML file.  The playlist will be created in the iTunes library and will contain any tracks that are refereced in the original playlist that already exists in the library.
There may be a mesage, "Some of the songs in the (filename).XML were not imported because they could not be fund".  This is because the songs you are importing have to already be in your iTunes library.
I just did this with my kid's iPod and it worked great.  I found this tip on Apple Support Communities (discussions.apple.com/thread/2577582?start=0&tstart=0).  It was posted by SpyglassSally and my original search question in Goole was was, "How do i copy a playlist from an iPod to iTunes".
Thanks for the responses and I hope this helps anyone else.

  • Importing Winamp playlists into iTunes

    Hey all,
I'd like nothing better than to make iTunes my default music player. Only problem is, I have a bunch of playlists that I created using Winamp, and when I import them into iTunes my library suddenly shows duplicates for each song that's in the play list. With more than 2,600 songs in a single playlist, that's a big problem.
The Winamp playlist is in the M3U format, but Winamp makes it possible to save lists in several other formats as well. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
Thanks for helping if you can.

  • Add multiple .m3u playlists into itunes library

is there any way to add multiple .m3u files to itunes library so they result in multiplay playlist instead of a big playlist? thanks

I haven't done it, but the approach to try would be to CTRL-click them, so that multiple of them are highlighted, and them drag them to the word PLAYLISTS. Try it with two and see if it works before you do it with more.

  • I made a playlist on my iPhone, How to I import that playlist into iTunes

I created a playlist on my iPhone. Now I want to import that playlist to iTunes. It's not automatically synced. Not to mention, when I export the playlist (right click, select export) and then drag that playlist into my iTunes playlist list it's blank... I need help. This should be eaiser than this.

I was having the same problem and after some research online I found this and it worked:
    1. Plug your iPhone into iTunes.
    2. Right- or ctrl-click on the name of the iPhone playlist you want
    3. Select Export...
    4. Change the format to XML and save
    5. In iTunes go to the menu File>Library>Import Playlist...
    6. Find the playlist you'd just saved and... bingo.
If you've changed any of the info on any tracks in your library since creating that original playlist it may have difficulty finding a few of them. If so it will let you know, but you'll get everything else. Good luck!
    Hope it works with you.

  • Can I Import a Playlist into iTunes 2.0.4?

I have kept my G4 bootable in OS 9.2.2 as well as OS X. Using iTunes v2.0.4 I can "export" a playlist which iTunes v5.0.1 can read by using "import". However, that same playlist seems unuseable on another Mac which also runs iTunes v2.0.4. Additionally a playlist "exported" from iTunes v5.0.1 seems to be unuseable in v2.0.4.
I guess my main point is that v2.0.4 can export a playlist but cannot import one from the same version or higher. Or have I just not found the command for importing a list into v2.0.4?
If you can export a list, shouldn't you also be able to import one?

  • Problems migrating a playlist into iTunes...

    Hi folks,
I am having very frustrating problems migrating some music into my iTunes library and making it into a playlist which will display the tracks in the way that I want. I might not know some technical terms here, but I will try to be as clear and concise as possible!
I have some music (the 'Glee' TV show soundtrack)that I downloaded elsewhere (i.e not from iTunes), and I just want to move it into an iTunes playlist, to display the tracks in the 'standard' way- that is, all in one 'block', numbered and sequenced in the correct running order.
So all I did is exactly what I have done before: created a new playlist from the iTunes 'file' menu, given the playlist a name, then dragged and dropped each track from the folder that I downloaded the music into originally. So in this case- I dragged and dropped each track from it's location in a folder called 'J Girl music', which is where I download music for my girlfriend to.
Now, I don't know whether the fact that the soundtrack is by a bunch of different artists (rather than just one) is part of the problem here, but what I get when I drag and drop into the iTunes 'Glee' playlist (using 'as list' as my 'view' option) is the tracks in the playlist displayed in 'clusters'.
So the first two tracks appear in one separate, delineated box then the next two in a separate, delineated box and so on (kind of like having a number of individual albums within the playlist)- and each 'block' has its own separate album art displayed to the left. I hope people can visualise what I mean here- things seem easy to explain until you try to put them into words!
So really all I want is for the 'Glee' playlist to be the same as my other ones-the tracks in one 'block' with no boxes separating them and sequenced in the correct order.
I have tried a number of things to fix this: I have right-clicked on tracks (both from the playlist and the library) gone into 'info' and numbered them e.g 1 of 18, 2 of 18, etc. I have changed the info about artist to the heading 'various artists', I have tried checking the box that says 'part of a compilation', but no matter what I seem to do tracks 3,4,5 etc will not 'jump' and sit themselves directly underneath tracks 1 and 2- the 'boxes' dividing them remain!
I hope I have explained this problem clearly (I really tried to) and I would be very appreciative of any help a forum member or members can provide. Thanks in advance.
