Converting wma

does anyone know how to change iTunes to get it to convert wma files like it used to??? cause the new itunes won't let me....

iTunes for Mac does not and has not converted wma files.
Only iTunes for Windows will do this.
On a Mac you will need to convert them outside of iTunes.
Google EasyWMA for a converter to do this.

  • I know how to convert WMA to AAC/MP3 for Itunes

I'm not sure if someone else has figured this out or not, but I figured out how to convert WMA files to AAC or MP3 for Itunes. First open the file using Quicktime. I think you need the Flip4Mac program. I'm not sure and you also need Quicktime pro. Choose Save. Select standalone movie. Choose location. It will convert song to movie, then import all your movies you selected. Organize Itunes by "Kind". Select all of your new movies files. Choose Advanced and convert to your appropriate file type.
I looked for a while and couldn't find a good way to change wma to aac. This takes a little bit, but it works. What do you think? It works for me.

Or, as has been pointed out in numerous posts, you can use EasyWMA.

Wait- I thought that MP3 files were smaller than WMA files? Is that not correct?
Nope, it's not correct and this is a common misunderstanding. For the same bit-rate MP3 and WMA have pretty much the same file size. What is different though is at lower bit-rates (around say 64 kbit/s) WMA seems to give better sound quality than a similar bit-rate MP3. Whereas at higher bit-rates (around say 92 kbit/s and higher) MP3 seems to give better sound quality than a similar bit-rate WMA. Some people will dispute this though, which is why it's always better to listen for yourself.
I do care about quality as long as it doesn't sound like I recorded it off the radio but for the most part I want to make sure that my files on my player aren't larger than they have to be--to open more space and also make the player work less hard therefore (I hope) extending the battery life. I suppose I could always blank my MP3 (Creative Jukebox Zen 2.0) and just start over and put in only the songs that I really really want and see if the battery life lasts longer but my main concern is doing all I can to make my playback time increase.
The number of files on the player DOES NOT affect the battery life, which is often another misconception. What does affect the battery life is the bit-rate of the files as you play them. You can see the difference from my battery curve thread, but it isn't as dramatic as you might think.
As before, make sure you create some test files and listen for yourself. Trust your own ears as to what sounds best to you.

    Dear Nay2000,
I have the same problem, my girl-friend saved a bigger Gigabyte library from her old laptop before she sold it, then at some point she realized that she couldn't play many songs that she had transfered. Now, I paid those 30 quid as well, and it doesn't play 99% of the files, that is very frustrating, is there any way you got it revived?

  • How to convert wma in iTunes for MAC to mp3

The iTunes support manual mysteriously indicates that iTunes for MAC can convert WMA files to other formats, but doesn't tell me how! How do I convert the WMA files to mp3? When I google, I keep getting links to other sites and I'm not sure how to pick a trusted site.
    iTunes 11 for Mac: WMA
Windows Media Audio; a digital audio file format created by Microsoft. iTunes can convert WMA files to other formats.

Peabody, for me, Adapter is the ticket, and a free one at that. Quick, easy to use, nice interface and very flexible in terms of formats, destinations, etc. Also converts video. Been using it for a month and love it.

  • How to convert WMA files (from Windows Media Player) to play in iTunes

How do I convert WMA files (from Windows Media Player) to now play in iTunes?

Use Edit > Preferences > General tab > Import Settings to set your desired import format and bitrate. Note there is no point converting 128k wma into 320k mp3, you'll just get bigger files with no improvement in quality. Once you have set your import settings just drag & drop the files you want converted into iTunes.

  • CONVERTING .WMA SOUND FILES TO MP3s ON A  MAC

    CONVERTING .WMA SOUND FILES TO
    MP3s ON A MAC - Written 9/28/07
Here's some help on how to convert .WMA sound
files to MP3 sound files on a Mac. Hope it helps.
    1. Open the .WMA sound file in Quicktime.
    2. In the Quicktime menu tool bar, go to FILE and
    select SAVE AS.
    3. Save the .WMA sound file as a self-contained
movie .MOV file. Then create a folder on your desktop
to store the .MOV files that you created.
    4. Open iTunes and create a new playlist by
going into FILE in the iTunes menu toolbar and
select NEW PLAYLIST. Then name your playlist.
    5. From the folder created on the desktop,
drag the .MOV files into the specific playlist you
    created in iTunes.
    6. In the specific playlist you created in iTunes,
highlight the .MOV files with your mouse. Then go
to the iTunes menu toolbar and select ADVANCED.
    7. In ADVANCED, select CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3**.
Then wait for the iTunes' "ding noise" to let you know the files
    have been all converted.
**To have CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3
    listed in ADVANCED:
    (a) To have CONVERT SELECTION TO MP3 listed in
ADVANCED, go into iTUNES in the iTunes menu
    toolbar and select PREFERENCES.
    (b) In PREFERENCES, select the ADVANCED icon. In
the ADVANCED icon menu, click on IMPORTING.
    (c) In the IMPORTING menu, go to the IMPORT USING line.
Now scroll down and select MP3 ENCODER. The click
    on the OK button.
    8. After the .MOV files have been converted to MP3 sound files,
erase the .MOV files listed in the specific playlist you created.
    9. Take your mouse and click on the MUSIC icon in the LIBRARY section.
Now in the LIBRARY section, search for the converted files.
Once the converted files are found, be sure to highlight one at
a time-- you'll be making sure which ones are mp3s and which are not.
    10. Once a converted file is highlighted, go into FILE in the iTunes
menu toolbar. Click on GET INFO and check which files are
.MOV or MP3 files. Delete each .MOV file found.
    11. Now you're left with the converted MP3 files in the LIBRARY.
Highlight and drag all the converted MP3 files from the LIBRARY to your
specific playlist you created. Now you're done! Enjoy your
    new MP3s!

There is no solution for playing and coverting DRM-protected WMA files on a Mac. I don't even know of a way to covert DRM-protected WMA files on a PC; you normally have to reimport them from the CDs, or when purchased from a download store burn them to an audio CD (where allowed).

  • Can I pause convert WMA?

Im trying to convert a large amount of wma files into itunes. Over 21,000 files about 80 Gigs. Ive had Itunes cranking away on it for almost 48 hours now- it averaging about 158 files an hour. At this rate Id have to leave my computer going doing nothing else for a week!
Is there a way to pause or stop the convert wma without iTunes loosing its place? Im worried that if I stop it, when I go to restart it will just find all the WMA files and start all over again, making duplicates of what t has done so far. And with so many files it would take me forever to figure out which ones were already converted to remove them from the folder before starting up again. (see the problem). Does iTunes keep the "Convert to WMA.." playlist if I stop it, so I can restart where im at?? Id like to let it finish all the conversion eventually, then I know all the files are done and can just archive the folder of wma's.
Or- is there a good easy way to stop it and figure out which files are done so I can grab just the ones that still need conversion latter??
(just to complicate things- I also had a lot of mp3 and acc files- about another 80 gigs - so its not like i can just look at the library to know which came from wma's)
    Any help greatly aprreciated.

When iTunes converts a WMA, it creates a library entry for the converted file, but has no record of that WMA, and if it meets it again will start the conversion again.
All the conversion programs I have used do the conversions serially, i.e. one at a time, so it is not clear that another one would be faster.

  • Can I quickly convert WMA to AAC?

I am converting wma to aac and i am having to convert one song at a time. Is there anyway to select and convert an entire cd without having to convert each individual song? This is beating me down...

Click on the first track in the list and then while holding down the shift key click on the last one. This will highlight the selection, go to Advanced>Convert selection to AAC and it will do them all in turn.

  • Converting WMA to MP3 files - struggling

Bckground info - compaq presario laptop (3-4 years old)
Problem experienced -  is trying to convert WMA to MP3 files to transfer to flash drive for use through he usb port in my audio amp. Can't find a means in WMP and struggled with Winff and Jodix, neither of which seem to want to transfer the files once identified. Any safe suggestions. (just downloaded a load of dross from Google in a search for Jodix amongst which was something called YAC which was most reluctant to uninstall).

iTunes cannot use wma files so it needs to convert them.
They will not get added to iTunes until they are converted so you cannot choose to convert them later.
I noticed I cannot load additional WMA files during the conversion process. I have to wait until the process is complete before loading more files.
Why not add them all at once?
File -> *Add folder to library* and pick the top level folder where the wma files are.

  • For iTunes experts! - My iTunes has been converting WMA files for 11 days!

My question is: If I exit iTunes (i.e. Reboot my computer) and then go back to iTunes, will iTunes continue finishing the conversion process?
My iTunes has been converting WMA files for 11 days now..
It's converting my entire multi-thousand album collection from windows media player into iTunes.
Will it start where it left off?
Or, the dreaded, will it start all over again, causing thousands of duplicates in my new iTunes library?
The ONLY status bar shows the current song, I have no idea which order it's going in or how much longer it has to go.
I understood it would take a long time to convert the thousands of WMA files into iTunes format, but I have no way to know how much longer it will take, or if it's interupted what will happen!
    Thanks -

Understood. If I quit iTunes before it's done converting the files I had previously selected, it will not continue to convert the WMA's to iTunes format. I will have to re-select the songs I want converted.
Now: What if I select the entire folder (containing all songs, some already converted into iTunes, others not yet converted) - will iTunes RE-Convert songs that it has already converted (therefore creating duplicates in my library)? Or is the software able to recognize that an identical entry is already in its library index?
