Convincing my parents that the iPhone is a good idea

Let's put it this way: my parents are cheap. I have an '85 as my first car cause it gets the job done. I'm not complaining, but it's a little frustrating at times when it needs repairs as often as it's had. Back to the subject at hand... It's kinda like my phone. It makes calls, it gets calls. I'm not allowed to text cause of the 10 cents every time (my mom was mad when she found out i had 9 texts during last billing period). My mp3 player *****. It has about 110 songs on it, and i "choose" songs by hitting previous/back buttons. I'm full up on it and it's just a hassle with it's AAA battery always running out of life.
So, I've considered an iPod or other advanced mp3 player.
Then iPhone came out.
I could upgrade to an mp3 player that works VERY well and is really well laid out with artists/albums/songs and organized. I could have it on me all the time, i could watch movies and tv shows with it.. basically the reason all of you own (or plan on buying) an iPhone.
One catch. One BIG catch. 500 bucks. I don't plan on stooping for the 4gb since i know it won't hold everything i'd want to put on it, but if i got an iphone it'd be the refurbished 8gb at 500.
My parents letting me buy a 500 dollar phone? It'd take some SERIOUS 'battle' and 'negotiating'. I'd buy it with the money I earned from work, but they'd argue since they pay for my gas and phone bills. In fact, I know the only way I'd be able to bring this up at all is when I receive quarter (or mid-term) grades in the mail, with straight A's (or very close to).
I'd say, "Mom.. I was looking at getting this cool phone, and since I got straight A's and all..."
"What phone??? Doesn't the phone you have now do enough for you?"
"Uh.. well I was planning on using the money I got from work... it can... *please fill in this blank w/ a reply* .. for 500 bucks."
Hopefully she'll agree. But I don't see it happening unless I do a Steve Jobs grade overview of the iPhone. Suggestions??? Thanks for reading a crap-load of text.

I had super-cheap parents, so I know where you're coming from.
If you mainly want a music player, you might be better off with one of the new iPods. Looks like they are coming around September 5th and they'll probably be very similar to the iPhone in every function but the phone itself. At least you should wait until then before making a final decision. You could also note to your parents that at least you are not getting committed to an expensive service agreement, like the other fellow who replied noted.
The iPhone is the best iPod made, but it has low capacity relative to other models. If you have the massive music collection most people do, you won't be able to fit it all in your iPhone and that might not make you too happy with the purchase.
The main reason to buy an iPhone in my opinion is the Mobile safari and email which lets you keep in touch with your parents and others. If they want to keep in touch with you better, that would be a selling point. If your parents see the educational value of the web, having it in your pocket and at your fingertips is undeniably useful and educational. I know that a lot of the time I would otherwise spend waiting or idle can be put to productive use with iPhone, and that's a good thing.
Hope that helps.

by reset option do you mean the DFU restore? worked for me, have you tried that?
if not - hold the lock and home button until the power down bar comes up. then hold the lock button for ten seconds - next continue to hold the lock button and press the home button for ten seconds - next release the lock button and hold the home button for 10 seconds. this should be done with the phone tethered. If done right and your itunes is configured as such, the phone will reload the drivers and start up itunes, and then prompt for a restore/update.

sorry but I think this wrong, I know that in Colombia there and two of the three operators already have 4G/LTE networks, what happens is that the iPhone should be expected to send the update software for computers that have this tercnologia activate them, that my Iphone or receiving 5 supports 4G LTE,
    Thank you for your attention

Apple needs to test the carrier if they offer LTE as expected.
If your country/carrier is not on the list then there's no LTE on your iPhone.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
It's between the your carrier and Apple. There's nothing you can do except feedback to Apple:

  • Does the iPad 2 pass through TV the same way that the iPhone 4s does ?

Does the iPad 2 pass through TV the same way that the iPhone 4s does ? I have an Arcam rCube dock which allows the tv pass through from the iPhone 4s and I was wondering if the iPad 2 will do the same if I buy a dock extender and what should I check for in a dock extender ?

No - that feature does not exist on the iPad2 and I know of no plans - nor would anyone else here - for that feature to be added with a software update in the future.

If you mean you are having trouble activating your iPhone after
    updating to iOS 6:
    iOS 6.0.1
Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
My phone is from USA and unlocked version and I paid 750 USD.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
    USA
What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
I used BSNL - India previously. After I get problem, I used Mobily -Saudi Arabia again I got problem and I am trying to use Airtel - India.
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
    What does It mean?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>About=>Carrier?
    Airtel 13.0

It would be better for troubleshhoting if you posted back to your original question.... here

message that "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)."
    How can I fix it?

Usually that means the iPhone was hacked to unlock it from the original
    carrier .
Updating the operating system locks it back to that original carrier
    You could try this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
However if the iPhone was hacked it is probably a paper weight  now
and as this is an Apple hosted forum  you can get no further help here

    Extracts :
General Policy: Use of non-Transmitting PEDs
Whilst the use of all PEDs is prohibited during the taxi, take-off and landing phases of flight, (when the passenger seat belt sign is on), use of PEDs that only produce spurious emissions are often permitted during the cruise phase of flight. However, the aircraft crew may require PED use to be suspended at any time, and such a request must be obeyed. Such a case might be if the crew suspects that the PED use is the cause of interference with aircraft systems.
Examples of PEDs that might be permitted to be used during the cruise phase of flight includes:
laptop computers, PDAs and MP3 players (as long as they do not include wireless transmitting functions); and
electronic games, DVD players, CD players, cassette players, video or "still" cameras and calculators.
The use of some mobile phones or PDAs is also permitted by some airlines as long as they are used in the "flight safe" mode only, and this mode is enabled before the PED is turned off before the start of the flight, so that it is already within the “flight safe” mode when it is turned back on in the permitted phase of flight. The restriction on the use of PEDs applies to devices carried onboard by the passenger or provided to the passenger by the crew. It does not apply to time measuring equipment (watches etc.) or implanted medical devices (pacemakers etc.). Any medical devices that include a monitoring feature that includes a transmitting function to a medical centre should have this transmitting feature switched off during the flight – see general policy on use of transmitting PEDs.
General Policy: Use of Transmitting PEDs
The use of PEDs that intentionally transmit for the purposes of data transfer or vocal communication is generally prohibited for the duration of the flight. This is due to the level of EM Radiation generated during the communication process being greater than that caused by the PEDs' spurious emissions, which are normally tolerated.Examples of intentionally transmitting PEDs that are generally prohibited are:
mobile phones, personal computer equipment with wireless wide, local or personal area network (WWAN, WLAN or WPAN) devices, radio transmitters and remote control equipment (which may include some toys).
Some airlines may accept the use of low power devices conforming to the Bluetooth standard during the cruise phase of flight. The transmissions of these have been shown to be no greater than the host PED's spurious emissions.
Some aircraft are equipped with WiFi type Wireless Local Area Networks. In such cases, compatible devices may be used during the cruise phase of flight. Use is not permitted on aircraft not equipped with this feature.
Some aircraft are now equipped to enable mobile phones to be used. Details can be found in the section on Mobile phones. On all aircraft not equipped with these systems, use of mobile phones is prohibited for the entire duration of the flight.

  • All of a sudden tonight when I went to sync with my iTunesMacPro, I received an error message that the iPhone could not be sync'ed because it needed 6.25 GB more space

I have a 16 GB iPhone 4S.  Tonight when I went to sync with my iTunes on my MacPro, I received an error message that the iPhone could not be sync'ed because it needed 6.25 GB more space. I still have 2.5 GB free. I sync'ed last night fine.  How could I need 8.75 GB (6.25 +2.5) more space on a 16GB iPhone.  I have added nothing but audio podcasts to my iTunes library on my Mac in the last two days and I have not change the sync setting on my iPhone.  Something has gone haywire.  Any ideas.  Mahalo, Oahu Guy

I resolved this after some analysis.  Turnes out that iTunes was not recognizing that my music was already installed on my iPhone, so when I tried to sync, iTunes was attempting to load all my music a second time, and there was not enough room on my iPhone for that.  I did a restore from backup today and this appears to have resolved the problem.  I initiatied an iTunes sync and it worked fine.  Not sure where the glitch was.  Could have been in the latest update of the iTunes software.  Not sure.  Anyway, I'm good now.

  • Does anyone else feel that the iPhone is sluggish after update 1.1.1?

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that the iPhone feels more sluggish after update 1.1.1? I haven't unlocked or hacked the phone in any way and so it must be due to the update. I thought that the sluggish behavior could be due to a recent update and so I reset the phone. But I still feel that the iPhone has lost that responsiveness that it used to have before. Any one else experiencing this?

Yes, without question I thought typing, especially, was sluggish at first. However, after a day it has seemed to speed up and now, I'd say, is back to original performance, or close to it.
Also, I have lots of contacts (2500), and the phone has been very slow to make the first identification of email addresses when I start typing. Specifically, it freezes for several seconds after the first letter is typed. However, I believe that process is a bit faster after this update.
