CookBook Pro!!!

Hello! I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch, and have just started noticing that my laptops fan is running harder and faster then when I purchased it 4 months ago. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep my MacBook Pro cooler when I am running games such as Minecraft, or doing something as simple as going on Safari? It gets so hot, I could probably cook eggs on it!

Try a SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself.
Be aware that some games will make it run warm due to the high graphic use of tthe GPU.
If you still are "frying eggs" after the SMC reset take it to an Apple store genius bar (make an appointment) and have it checked out, you may have a faulty sensor. The diagnostic will be free, You are still under warranty, so if they find something wrong there should be no charge. If there is nothing wrong with your MBP, you may want to consider a cooling tray. The Mac will shut itself off  if ithits critical temps (provided the temp sensor is not faulty)
Get it checked, take full advantage of your warranty. (1 year warranty, additional 2 years if you purchased AppleCare)

  • Jumpy Keyboard / Cursor ?

So I received my CookBook pro just over a week ago, and so far am pretty happy with it. (It gets warm, but not so hot I can't pick it up. It does get uncomfortable on my lap, however.)
This is both my first Mac and my first "laptop".
I do a lot of coding for the web: Mostly PHP with HTML, and trying out different text editors. Right now I'm using Subethaedit, which I like a lot.
Anyway, sometimes when I'm typing, the cursor will jump up a number of lines. It will type everything I've entered, but just not where I intended it. So then I have to cut and paste back to where I was working.
Is this common among laptop keyboards? I would ask whether or not it's a case of sensitivity, but sometimes I stop to type characters One At A Time, nice & slowly, and it still hops.
Does anyone know why? I can type upwards of 60+ WPM, and having a jumping cursor is no good. Could it possibly be some "combination of keys" is a shortcut to "go up X lines"?
    Thanks for your time.

In system preferences under mouse/keyboard under trackpad settings make sure that you have selected ignore accidental trackpad input.
Intead of Subethaedit I use BBedit which costs a couple bucks but is worth it in my opinion. You should check it out. It has a lot of integrated features (like subversion support) and is a really mature product.

  • Which files do I transfer from external drive to new MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
My hard drive went bad on my MacBook Pro, but fortunately I did a weekly backup.
Unfortunately, it was not a Cloned back up or a Time Machine backup, so I can't seem to be able to use the Migration Assistant to transfer my files to my new MacBook Pro.
Is there a list of files that I should make sure to copy over?
I know that I need to copy my apps that aren't already native to Mavericks.  Also, most of the files in my User Folder.  Is it wise to copy the entire library in the User Folder, or should I select individual files and folders?  Is there anything else I should look for?
If there is a step by step tutorial on this, and I have somehow missed it, please point me on my way.
    Thanks for any help.

I had tried to copy everything from my backup, but it made the OS lag and be glitchy.
Is it a bad idea to copy things to the library (the one that is located at  macintosh hd/library)?
One thing is for sure...I'll be switching to Time Machine or CCC...this is taking a looooong time.
    So, any ideas out there?
It is too late, but either a bootable clone (I use SuperDuper!) or a Time Machine backup would have made the transition smooth.
I do not know of any "cookbook" approach to help you.
I think I would have reinstalled OS X 10.9.4 and then moved all my data files. I do not know what settings, files, etc. would need to be moved.

  • Brand New Mac Pro - Extreme Novice

Just got a nice birthday present (complete surprise) about an hour ago. - a new Mac Book Pro !
I have been administering my kid's emac for about 2.5 years now, but still consider myself a novice.
Any advice on how to proceed with the several tasks that need to be performed, i.e. transfer of accounts/information email, itunes network config, iphoto libraries etc. from my daughters emac and photos only from my sons emac ?
    Naturally terrified.
Also how about 2 accounts - administrator and user - recommended ?
I'll be the only user (right!)
We have wireless. I believe that the emac's have firewire. (level of ignorance)
But I can follow instructions with the best of them.
Anyway, I'll probably calm down in while. Is there a "cook book" out there on how to proceed ? Don't really want to read through several thousand messages on the bulletin board. Looking for a little efficiency and effectiveness in getting up and running.
    Thanks, Jim Svarz

you should have received a couple of major "cookbooks". Read the manuals that came with the computer. Read the pdfs online if you need to search for something. Both the Tiger (os x book) and the hardware book have a lot of info that you need and are much more compact and informative than this "support' forum.
The "help" sections for the OS and each application are also a great tutorial plus Apple has supplied Tutorial on the .Mac pages. Use 'em!
You have administered Macs for your kids, you can do a great job of using your new one for yourself.
As the previous poster said, use the Target disk mode with Firewire on the kids computers if there is anything that you want to copy off of them for yourself.
As this is "your" computer, set up your account and your user information and your preferences don't actually use the migration assistant except to copy what you want. You need your account and your preferences to all be yours and not the kids'.
If you want to add your kids' stuff later, then add user accounts for them when you want to. They will only have access on your computer to the user accounts that you create.
Since your kids have been using mac, they are a valuable resource for you to use. Regardless of age, they can probably do stuff with them that many of these 'switchers' have not even dreamed of yet. The longer that you use a mac, the more you love em and can do whatever you want with them.

  • How do I add multiple family members to eprint capability on my 8600 pro?

I dont know how to add my wife and son to the eprint capability on my 8600 pro, i tried adding them as seperate users under hp connected but it wont let you use the claim code more than once.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm sure someone has done this before, any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance

    Hi AV55,
I think you misunderstood banhien's earlier post.  Your wife would need to log into her ePrintCenter/HP Connected account and then add each family member as an authorized sender following the steps banhien posted.

  • My mac's software is only available under my profile on MacBook pro. How can other family members get to the optional SW logged in under their own profile

Is there a way to share purchased SW under mote than one profile on the MacBook pro?
    Thanks

If the software is in the HD>Applications folder it's available to everyone. If for some reason you put software into User>Applications folder it will be available only to that user.

  • Install Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac Mini Late 2014

I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my Mac Mini.  Windows reports that it cannot install or create a partition on the drive after formatting the BOOTCAMP partition as NTFS.
    This is my setup:
    1. Mac Mini Late 2014 with 2TB Fusion Drive.
    2. Windows 8.1 Pro x64 full version ISO downloaded from Microsoft Store.
    3. Sandisk Extreme Flash Drive (I have tried both 16GB and 64GB).
    4. Bootcamp partition = 500GB.
    5. Other USB devices plugged in: Corded USB Mouse and Apple Extended Keyboard (both of which are required to enter the serial number and navigate the installer window).
    6. No additional storage devices of any kind are connected aside from the internal Fusion drive and the installer drive.
    7. Booting from the EFI portion of the Bootcamp created Windows installer.
I have read that I should try using a USB 2 flash drive rather than a USB 3 flash drive, so I will try that next.  I fail to understand how this could make any difference.
If you have any other tips, please let me know.
I have installed or helped other people install bootcamp many times over the course of the past 2 years.  Every single time it has caused endless headaches and literally weeks of wasted time.
I have read endless posts on what is causing these problems.  I will consider summarising these for anyone else having the same problems.  Everyone has their theory so far about this Bootcamp nightmare, but so far there doesn't appear to be any one magic solution.
Apple's inability to address the issue suggests that the problem may be with the Windows installer.  Perhaps Microsoft is deliberately causing this?
I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
If you have any better idea, please let me know.
On another topic, how to I rename the NTFS partition back to BOOTCAMP?  All options to rename this partition are greyed out in Disk Utility...
    Cheers,
    Paul

The FAT32/NTFS partition is usually not adequate for an EFI install. You can delete the BCA-created partition and create a Disk Utility partition which is formatted as Free Space. This will be split into an MSR and MSD. Fusion drives create problems, especially if the BC partition lies outside the traditional MBR 2TB boundary.
Before you delete the BCA-created partition, please post the output of
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

Windows installers up to W8.1 do not have USB3 drivers. These are installed after Windows is installed and BC drivers are in place.

The requirements are pretty strict when installing Windows. Any deviations cause headaches and grief.

The USB is usually the issue.

After Windows is fully installed and BC drivers are in place, log into Windows, right click on it and rename it on the Windows side. It cannot be renamed on the OSX side with diskutil renameVolume. Here is an example sequence. You cannot rename volume during the installation process.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 in Macbook Pro

During installation of Adobe Photoshop CS2, the installer runs and freezes in the midst. There is no way of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 with intel processor. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred with or without installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?

Edwin, thanks for the input, and I do apologize. You are right. I should be easier with which to live. There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did these updates on my MacBook Pro 17 inch and my G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz machine that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. I had both problems on my MacBook Pro, and the G5 had the reboot glitch. I won't update the other machines untill these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
Of the two major hiccups out there, this link indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the inability to restart machines, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. I had this reboot problem also.
    http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/05/24/cs2quicktime/index.php
Accrobat's freezing the system, the question at hand, is a result of the Security Update, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings.
Apple has released two products that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out without the Security Update.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

  • Cannot send email from 3 accounts Mac Pro

My brand new Mac Pro cannot send email using Gmail, Shaw, or iCloud.  At times I can send a simple test message, other times I cannot send.  It seems the more data in the email, it for sure cannot be sent.  The sent messages get stuck in the Out Box.  Full green lights, no red lights in the connection diagnostics window.  Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

thank you for your reply, I did this with the same problem.  Turns out that I went to FAQ section and went to the "Sharing" section of "system preferences"  and changed my computer name by removing all spaces and apostrophe where it lists my computer name under Mac Book Pro, and problem solved.

Canon DPP is Canon provided application for desktop/laptop computers and they don't have a version for any tablets as far as I'm aware (not even iOS or Android versions).
But there are other photo editing programs that would work.  I have an iPad.  While Apple has their own photo software (which isn't going to work on a Windows tablet) Adobe has an app called PS Touch.
PS Touch isn't nearly as full featured as Photoshop.  It limits the image resolution (it resizes any images that you import to it so they don't exceed the max resolution) but it does have most of the commonly used adjustments.  So if a person were just trying to get something out, it works in a pinch.
One other catch is that PS Touch can't deal with RAW images... so it's JPEG only.  But I can import JPEGs off the card into the iPad and then edit them -- not as well as I can if they're on a regular computer, but this is what I'ved when I'm away for a weekend with my camera.
