Cookie Cutter Tool

I have downloaded a lot of new shapes for using in Cookie Cutter. I unzipped them and they appeared in my Shapes list. Am using PSE3. However, when I close Editor and then re-open it, only my default shapes are there. Please can anyone tell me how to save or add to my default list (in Editor) without having to unzip the new shapes everytime I want to use one of them?

Ken,
Thanks very much. Have done that and I can now find them in Editor whenever I go to more shapes. However, is there a way that I can include them in "All Elements Shapes" when this is checked. I do see them listed at the end of the default shapes, but they aren't included in "All Elements Shapes". Not serious that I have to scroll down and select, but it would be nice to view all default shapes and my new shapes together.

  • How do I use the cookie cutter tool?

I have a lot of questions to ask on how to use this program. I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, and I can't seem to get the tools to work. I click things on and nothing happens or I get a buzz indicating that whatever it is I want to do, I can't. I went to the cookie cutter tool and clicked that on. I figured out how to pick a shape, but then what? No matter what I clicked, nothing happened. How do I get it to work? I have a book called 'Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop Elements 8' and the pages are very clear, but whatever options are given in the book, I can't find in my program. I am sure part of the problem is that i have this program on a Mac. Maybe the Mac version doesn't work like the PC version. I can't seem to find any directions for this. I clicked on help and it brought me to a web page for Mac Photoshop Elements 8, and I did a search for 'cookie cutter' and nothing came up. I also looked at all the options available for help and didn't see any 'cookie cutter' tool instructions. How can I learn how to use this software? Thanks for any help.

I don't remember what the directions were yesterday, when I was experimenting with Photoshop, but I believe that the directions told me to use the custom shape tool, but I couldn't find it. It said to click on the rectangle, and a menu would come up, but no menu came up. So I thought I would just experiment and click on 'cookie cutter' and see what would happen when I clicked on it. I tried using some keyboard shortcuts to see what would happen (just trying to figure out how to get something to work) and at the web site for Photoshop for Mac, it said to click 'Q' (I can remember what was supposed to happen), but I clicked 'Command' and 'Q' at the same time and it closed the program! The web site didn't say which other key to use with the Q, and nothing happened when I just clicked the Q. Another thing I was trying to do was to make something in Photoshop (this was on another web site) and I had to go to 'window' then the next step was to go to 'channel' and click it on. I went to window and there was no 'channel' in the drop down menu. There were other options, but no 'channel'.

  • PSE 6 for Mac: Only have one shape in the Cookie Cutter tool

I just installed PSE 6 for Mac and am getting familiar with it. When I tried to use the Cookie Cutter tool, I have no choices (no black arrow next to the star in the toolbar) and it always is a 'heart' (cute, but was hoping for more choices). Any suggestions on why this is, and how to repair? Thanks in advance for any help...

Actually, I found the answer...disregard my question. Newbie error. Thanks for understanding!

  • Cookie Cutter Tool in Photoshop Elements 11

I am unable to make a shape from a photo using the Cookie Cutter Tool. I duplicated the photo. Clicked on cookie cutter icon. Created shape. Clicked on green check mark. The new layer is transparent. I cannot make the shape appear. Thanks. Helen

    Hi Joe,
Thanks so much for your response.
The shape does not appear on the duplicate layer once I click the green check mark.
I clicked the eye symbol on the original layer per your suggestion. The second layer is a checker board, which I understand indicates transparency.
The shape does not show at all in this second (duplicate) layer.
I know this will be a V-8 moment once I realize what I have done. Thanks again.

  • Using the cookie cutter tool

I am having trouble cropping a photo with the cookie cutter tool. When I drag a shape over my photo, my photo disappears, leaving the gray/white checkerboard. Any advice?

From the nature of your question I think that you have posted in the wrong forum. Somehow your thread was posted in the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum (video editing).
If your thread question is as I believe a Photoshop Elements question, then please re-post your thread in the Adobe Photoshop Elements Forum or wait for a moderator here to move your thread from here to there.

  • How do you change radius with rounded square cookie cutter tool?

The radius on the cookie cutter tool is a bit too much for me. I need rounded corners, but smaller radius. 10px if possible.
Any help would be great, as I am very new and using Photoshop Elements 10

There's not an easy way to do that, so you may have to use the Rounded Rectangle Tool instead.
Grouped with the other shape tools in the toolbox.

  • How make cookie cutter with fade-out to white surround - a vignette?

I have been given a wedding picture and my client wants a soft white vignette,  the picture fading to white all round. I have the Cookie Cutter but can see no way of changing the hard edge to a vignette.

    Okay lets start over:
    1. Drag the locked background layer (drag the layer in the layers panel)
down to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel.
        This duplicates the background layer.
    2. Make the background layer active (click on the bottom layer in the layers panel).
    3. Go to the bottom of the layers panel, click on the new fill or adjustment layer icon
and select Solid Color from the drop down menu. When color picker appears, select
white as the color and click ok.
(you can change the color later by double clicking on the fill layer icon in the layers
         and choosing a new color)
    4. Make the top layer in the layers panel active by clicking on the top layer in the layers panel.
    5. Select the cookie cutter tool, choose the shape, set the feather, uncheck the crop box and
draw out the shape on the image.
The amount of feather depends on how large your image is, so you might have to try a few different settings.

  • Newbie needs help! Checkerboard pops up when using cookie cutter?

When I'm using the cookie cutter why does my image disappear and shows a white & gray checkerboard grid instead? Am I missing a step or something?

    The checkerboard pattern denotes transparency.
When you drag out a shape with the cookie cutter tool, the shape embracing what you wish to retain should be there after you commit.
    Try this:
Open picture file, drag out the heart shape (it is the first one, solid black, in the default library) and commit.
    Now try this:
Open picture file, duplicate background layer, work on background copy layer. Shut off the visibility of the background layer by clicking on its eye icon on the left in the layers palette.
Drag out the heart shape and commit.
Place a blank layer between the background and background copy layers, and fill the blank layer with a color (use Paintbucket tool or go to Edit>fill layer>foreground color.) The color should show through the area of transparency (checkerboard).
Please post back with your progress.

  • CS3: newbie "cookie cutter" question

    I have a complicated shape, that's grouped.
I also have a simple circle that i want to "cookie cutter" out a selection of the aforementioned complicated, grouped shape, and then make it into a swatch to use as a pattern.
I can make a clipping mask, easy.
But I want to ERASE all the extraneous artwork. And, obviously, with a clipping mask, it's merely hidden. And that can't be used as a swatch/pattern because it includes the totality of the art. And I can't seem to stroke my clipping mask.
I've tried "divide below", "compound path" and all the pathfinder options, and tried to "expand" everything.
    But no dice.
I know this is something simple... what am I missing?
    tia,
    e

This is a very frequent topic. It is one of the classic limitations (classic, because the limitation is over two decades old) of Illustrator's pathetic base functionality.
    Note the expectation:
I know this is something simple... what am I missing?
Then note the ridiculous array of convoluted, multi-step, caveat-riddled workarounds that are invariably suggested in thread like this:
There's always the suggestions to resort to Pathfinders, with all their ridiculous artwork-wrecking gotchas: Depending upon the specific paths involved, Pathfinders variously remove strokes, remove open paths, outline strokes and/or fills. So there always follows a lengthy discourse on "clever" sequences, one of which sometimes "gets lucky" and satisfies the specific instance of the thread originator--just because the originator's artwork just happens to have the "correct" kinds of paths/fills/strokes for the Pathfinder "solution."
There's always the suggestions revolving around Expansion of live Effects (Flattening transparency, making and expanding LivePaint groups, etc.). These all present similar caveats, plus all the complications of nested clipping paths, groupings, etc.
Almost never is mentioned the closest thing to a straightforward cutting feature that Illustrator offers: The Eraser tool that was trotted out in CS3. This tool would be the correct answer to such situations, were it not so poorly implemented. For the first time ever, it finally gave Illustrator the literally decades-overdue ability to cut across multiple open unfilled paths. But it unpredictably alters the shapes of the paths (!), so I consider it unreliable and unacceptable; a reflection of the increasingly poor quality of this program.
This is something simple, though--in any decent drawing program other than Illustrator. Examples:
Corel Draw, Xara Xtreme (others): Draw a path of any shape. Use it to cut (that's cut, not merely mask) any other path or any other group of paths.
Adobe FreeHand: Use the Knife tool to cut across any number of paths in one stroke. So using guides or grid snaps, you can trim artwork down to a rectangular area with four moves.
Typically, in the basic art cutting features of other programs, all selected paths are cut. The resulting portions of each cut path retain their existing fill/stroke attributes (unlike the absurd Pathfinder workarounds in Illustrator). Strokes remain strokes (don't get "outlined" to closed paths, as they do in Illustrator's awkward workarounds).
Note that FreeHand's treatment is basic compared to that of the others mentioned. Illustrator's brand-new Eraser should at least match it's basic utility. But as explained above, it fails to do so, because of its poor quality.
Illustrator now has no less than four cutting tools (Knife, Scissor, Eraser, Slice) in its over-stuffed but under-powered main toolbox. NONE of them satisfy this most basic functional need. This is just one of several similar examples of how Illustrator's convoluted interface fakes "sophistication" and "power" by presenting a silly array of multiple tools--none of which actually measure up to the job of much more elegant single tools in other drawing programs.

  • Where is cookie cutter in pse 12?

It seems  Adobe has removed cookie cutter fro pse 12.
I can't find any instructions for using custom shapes as a work around.
    Any ideas?

No, it's just grouped with the crop tool. Click the crop tool and look in the Tool Options.

  • Cookie cutter image in new layer disappears

I have a background graphic. To that I added a couple rectangles in separate laters, then text in more layers that went onto the rectangles. Afterward, I wanted an arrow shape. Easy enough.
    Click NEW LAYER
    Cookie Cutter
    Select the arrow type
Drag it into the right shape
Click the green checkmark to ok.
Whamo, it disappears, both from the page and the layer palette.

Here are the tools showing up on my screen:
    Move tool
    Zoom
    Hand
    Eyedropper
    Rectangular Marquee
    Lasso
    Magic Wand
    Quick Selection
    Horizontal Type
    Recompose
    Cookie Cutter
    Straighten
    Red Eye Removal
    Spot Healing Brush
    Clone Stamp
    Eraser
    Brush
    Smart Brush
    Paint Bucket
I don't see either a Line Tool or Custom Shape Tool in that location. It must be elsewhere, or perhaps inside one of those listed?

  • Cookie Cutter Issue

I am having trouble using cookie cutter in Elements 11.  I have used it before and have never had this issue. Basically when I select cookie cutter and draw my shape on the canvas as soon as I click the green check mark it disappears.  I have noticed that when I click on the rectangle tool it immediately creates a shape layer.  However, when I select cookie cutter it adds a mask to the layer that immediately disappears.  It will not create a shape layer for cookie cutter.  When I use the rectangle tool it is fine, no problems. Even when I hide all the other layers there is still no shape there.  I have tried resetting the tool, resetting all tools, closing out of Elements and restarting the computer.  Nothing works.  Any suggestions??

It does not appear that I have a custom shape tool. . . rectangle tool & cookie cutter.  Am I missing something?

  • Adding cookie cutter shapes to Photoshop Elements 7.0

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0, and I was wondering if there was a way to add cookie cutter shapes to the images the program already comes with. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In addition to suggesting that David post the Photoshop Elements part of his upgrade question on this forum, I had posted some comments in his original thread over on the Premiere Elements forum. I will repeat those comments here so that others on this forum can make comments against my recommendations.
In general I think that your PSE 3 tags and collections will be carried forward when your catalog is upgraded from PSE 3 to PSE 7. What were "Collections" in PSE 3 will become "Albums" in PSE 7.
Now it is very important that in the PSE 3 Organizer BEFORE your catalog is upgraded, you do
    -- Reconnect All Missing Files
    -- Catalog Recover
These commands are available from the File menu of the PSE 3 Organizer. They "clean up" your existing PSE 3 catalog and a clean catalog can avoid many potential problems during the upgrade process.
You did not ask about any "Creations" in PSE 3 and I do not think the Creations (Slide Show or Photo Book is an example of a creation) will carry forward from PSE 3 to PSE 7. So it is good if the info that you do need is the PSE 3 Collection rather than a PSE 3 Creation.
Here are some Adobe techdoc references about upgrade to PSE 7 Organizer
    http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404990
    http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404991
and in general I would scan the list of top issues techdocs at
    http://www.adobe.com/support/photoshopelements/
The 2 I suggested above are on that list.
Be aware that the format and folder locations of the PSE catalog changed significantly between PSE 5 and PSE 6 (the 1st techdoc discuses this), so as you are migrating from PSE 3 to PSE 7 there will be some difference and how much you notice differences may depend on how deep you went in to PSE 3. The second techdoc, which discusses placing the PSE catalog in a non-standard folder location is one example of such a case. I say this not to scare you, but instead to make you aware of the potential for differences if there is initially a glitch in the upgrade process on your system.

  • Custom cookie cutter shape install in PSE 11?

I need some help. I've spent 2 hours online and I can't find an answer. I need a cookie cutter of a full bow tie. Not the outline one like the one tha's pre-installed in PSE shapes/cookie cutter.
    1. How/where do I look for more cookie cutter shapes? What are they called in search?
    2. How do I install them?
    3. How do I find them once installed so that I can cookie cutter out bow ties out of patterened papers?

You can download the set from here:
    https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=ewmHSvnhLbOkFs64X2BHpg
Just unzip the Bowties.zip and copy the Bowties.csh to
    windows operating system:
    C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\11.0\Presets\Custom Shapes
    mac operating system:
    /Users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Presets/Custom Shapes
Start or restart pse 11 and they should be listed in the Cookie Cutter and Custom Shapes lists

  • Cookie Cutter Question - PE 8 on PC Windows 7

Thank you for the help, this is my first week with elements. What I need is a way to use the cookie cutter feature but make jigsaw pieces. Is there a way to do this? I do not want to make a single picture a jigsaw. I am going to make a large photo coloage type that uses jigsaw cut outs from several different photos. So to complicate things, one jigsaw cutout may not be enough, I have to reassemble them later. I hope there is a way to do this.... Thanks again.

You can do this through actions.
    1 - Go to the site PanosFX.com
2 - Download the action "Jigsaw"
3 - Place the action in Photoshop Elements
    4. Place the action (atn file) in C:\Users\<userID>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\7.0\Presets\Actions.
    5. Run PSE
    6. Open your image and Launch Guided Edit
    7. Select the action under action Player
    Hope that helps!
