Cookies and Other Internet Junk Management
Hi,
I had been using Cocoa Cookies to delete cookies on Safari 6.02 but it doesn't work very well. Not sure if cookies are the only issue. I use Flush for flash downloads but not usre if that is workign either...
Here's the deal. I was shopping for a tent on-line. After a couple days of intense research all of a sudden I am plagued with ads for tents everywhere! I deleted cookies, except those I wanted (school passwords etc) and still ads. I only had ~25 cookies left when viewing in Cocoa Cookies. I then open the Safari>Preferences>Privacy and found ~400 "objects" (couldn't say if all or cookies or flash junk etc..) I then deleted all but ~25 of these. Ads were gone.
That was yesterday. I had problems with a school site I did not log out of and decided to eliminate its cookie to solve the issue. I was shocked to find 393 "cookies"!!!!! This was in limited Safari use in less than 24 hours!!! The vast majority are from "agencies" I have never heard of, exalator, gigbook, glam, ad nauseum.
I noticed that while I had ALWAYS had the preference set to "block cookies from 3rd parties" the selection was now "never"! So I have been accepting this crap for who know how long! Something changed my settings....
What in the heck is going on?!
I noticed Safari is running much better without this nonsense but since in short order I was loaded up again....
Is these some sort of simple add-on or button to click that will reduce this nonsense? Any apps that work? Do companies actually pay Apple to allow this and hide the way to regulate this from us?
Thanks,
W

Unfortunately there no way to get rid of this situation at present.
We cannot create neither a black list nor a white list for cookies.
Web sites (with embedded ads) we visit install all sorts of things cookies, caches, etc in our computer,
supposedly to make browsing and interaction easier, while filling up the "cookie jar".
Best.

Good Morning,
I have 646 websites that have stored "cookies and other data" on my comupter. How necessary is it to keep these?? My thought is to delete them. Any advice?I have never encountered a site to which I couldn't log in again after trashing its cookie(s). If you use Firefox (Preferences), you can list exceptions of cookies you don't want removed (e.g., for startpage and duckduck searching, I keep startpage and duckduck cookies in order to keep those search settings) and those you never want to accept (I have all Google cookies blocked. Doesn't keep me from using Google search, images or maps, but if you belong to a Google group or run some kind of Google program, that may be a problem.) Safari probably has some cookie manager extension available for that also.
If you use Firefox, NoScript will effectively block all google tracking that occurs on mousedown.
In your browser>Preferences, make sure you don't allow third party sites to store cookies.
What's even more worrisome than ordinary cookies, are Flash cookies ("Local Shared Objects"), which are persistent cookies, including the "evercookie." They aren't stored in the browser.
With Firefox, you can deal with this by using the Better Privacy Add-on, or see this post of mine, as modified by Kurt Lang.

though I have sufficent memory space, and other internet based functions are running...
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
However, since it works with other networks that really suggests a problem with your network. -
How do I get rid of 97] in Cookies and other website data
When I open Preferences/Privacy and select "Details" under "Cookies and other website data" the first entry which pops up is
97] plug-ins
If I highlight this entry and click remove, It is removed for perhaps 10 seconds, and then re-appears in the list.
1- What is this?
2- How do I get rid of it?
This is clearly a prvacy issue, or Apple would not be listing it in this listing with the associated warning.Linc Davis wrote:
Log out, then log back in while holding down the shift key after you enter your login password. Keep holding until the desktop appears. That will prevent third-party add-ons from loading. Try again to delete that item.
If you still can't delete it, and you still want to, proceed as follows.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now. If you skip this step, no one but you will be responsible for the consequences.
Quit Safari if it’s running.
Step 1
Select /Applications/Safari in the Finder and open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in that window labeled “Open in 32-bit mode.” If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the window.
Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar (Lion) or open the Library subfolder of your home folder (pre-Lion). Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Finder window open. Try Safari again.
Step 2
If it still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder, and move the following file to the Desktop:
Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then delete the following items (some may not exist):
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Cookies/Cookies.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. You don’t need to restore the files you deleted in step 1.
Ok... completed step1 with no change.
went on to "part of "step 2...
I kept the Bookmarks.plist, but then deleted the assortment of safari related Caches and Cookies
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Cookies/Cookies.plist
(I found several entries in Cache, but forgot to write down which ones I deleted ... sorry.)
did not delete any of the preferences or the last two entries in your list above.
Tried again and "the perp" was still there. "Remove all" on the Details tab did not change things...
However, there were now only 2 entries -- the 97] AND my bank's entry (Chase)!
Going back to the main privacy tab and clicking "Remove all Website Data" this time DID remove the last two entries.
=====
Now when I open the details tab, (I run my own webserver as my home page) Safari showed ONLY the cache entry for my server, no cookies.
However, I then noticed something quite intersting.
I left the details tab open and pulled to the side (the joy of having a 27 inch iMac) and naviaged to Apple.com
and then to support and then logged in to here.
As I was doing this. the Details window first showed, "Apple.com" .. Cache, Cookies, Local Storage
but then virtually immediately poped up entries:
doubleclick.net ... Cache
edgekey.net ... Cache
google.com ... Cookies
Very interesting, both from the point of view that "details" was showing me what was happening in "real time."
And the fact that, even with zero external ads, the web site, Apple.com, was inserting entries in the cache for doubleclick.net and edgekey.net. I can "almost" understand the "google.com" cookie, ecept for the fact that the search engine selected in the tool bar is "bing."... as I said "interesting."
With this new "insight" on the Details screen, It may be possible to determine WHERE this 97] actually came from. However, I would still like an explanation of what it actually is.... since the "]" (right square bracket) character is evidently a "special character" for search engines -- google, Yaho and Bing all treat it the same way -- they ignor it.... even when the entire 3 character string is quoted -- "97]" -- the pages returned all are for entries with only 97 in them. -

Do I need antivirus and other Internet protection for my new iPad?
Do I need antivirus and other Internet protection for my new iPad?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You don't need any antivirus. You just have to be careful with the websites you visit -
I need to inventory software on my corporate Macs. What software can I use? If it includes Antivirus, and other corporate resource management tools, that woudl be a plus.
I have 50-60 Mac OSX devices on my corporate network. I woudl like to install an "agent" on them that would allow me to report on how many have X copies of this or that software.
I also need a corporate Antivirus solution.
For PC, we have used things like MAAS360, Kaseya, Dell eSmart, etc....

Pandora and other internet radio
I was just wondering how i can get pandora and other internet radio sites like last.fm to work on my mb air. thanks
You need to either download and install the flash plug-in from http://adobe.com, or use the Google Chrome Browser for running Pandora/radio apps.
As an alternative, if you purchase Pandora One, you get access to a non-flash (it uses Adobe Air) stand-alone app for playing your Pandora stations on your computer. -
Why doesn't the "block cookies and other website data" setting on Safari 7.0.2 work? Everytime I try this setting, I still get cookies and other data that needs to be deleted from my computer.
This has been the case for sometime.
There is no effective way to block these cookies.
Try this, may help.
Safari > Preferences > Security > Cookies and other website data:
Press "Remove All Other Website Data:'
Do this twice.
Select "Reset Safari" from Safari drop down menu.
Select only "Reset all website data".
Click "Reset". -
Preferences Privacy Cookies and other website data
I'm having a problem. The number of "websites stored cookies or other data" keeps jumping around! First it shows 116, then jumps to 24, then jumps to 116, 117, then 15, then back to 24 again. Other numbers have been shown in a cycle, too. When I click on "details" the lists jumps around too. First listing many sites, then a few, then many again and so on. This is continuous. I tried "Remove All Website Data", but no luck. Any ideas? I've never had this problem before.
This seems to be caused by having pages making frequent updates to their cookies or local storage. You can tell the domain of the pages that are doing so by opening the Library/Safari/Local Storage folder in your home folder in Finder and sorting by date modified. In my case, both Facebook and Twitter pages were updating quite often. Once I closed them, the number settled down -- it continued to move up and down fairly frequently (presumably because some open pages were still adding/deleting cookies or local storage), but never reset or showed a much lower number.

Safari (and other internet browsers) keep freezing and crash - maybe flash?

I think there is a security error with my computer/browser, help?
It is possible that your firewall is blocking cookies if it happens in other browsers as well.

Hi all,
I'm having problems with chronic crashes of several internet applications: Safari, Mail.app, Firefox, Camino, etc. No non-internet apps have crashed.
Any ideas? I'm totally stumped. I've got a 1.5 G4 PB 12 running the latest OS.
Someone mentioned Java issues in passing but I haven't been able to diagnose the problem.
Here is a recent crash report from Mail.app:

AcidSearch That's just the tip of the iceberg!
Seraphim - most any of the various plugins/input managers etc have been known to cause problems of one sort or another. QT 7.0.4 causes problems with certain 3rd party apps & add-ons.
I would take a leap first & try rolling back QT to 7.0.1
If (by chance!) things work fine afterwards - you can probably update to 7.0.3
Otherwise....my approach would be
1: create a new user account for testing & confirm that the problem does not show up there.
2: Remove all input managers ( to a safe place!) ,restart & test. If it's ok, start adding them back, one at a time....until the crashes recur.
3: Same with contents of /library/internet plug-ins/ and /home/library/internet plug-ins/
4: remove/disable anything else non-apple
If you still get crashes after 2,3 & 4 , then capture some more logs ( safari good for me) before you re-enable all the things mentioned. -
I don't want all those cookies being stored either in cache or storage, as reported in Safari menu under Preferences, under Privacy. I tell the system to delete them and they come right back. I want to know how to keep those things from peeking in on my traffic. Thank you.
Sorry if this comes to late, I just now came across this thread. I have rtorrent and rutorrent sunning successfully on my x64 Arch Linux install.
Try putting the "SCGIMount /RPC2 127.0.0.1:5000" line in your httpd.conf file right after the LoadModule lines (it's line 124 for me).
I seem to recall it not working when I put it at the end of the file.
Best of Luck!

on the website it clearly stated "It’s highly secure and reliable" and that "You don’t need to buy software to speed it up, keep it safe, or get it to work better." and it also says that "The built-in defenses on a Mac help keep you safe from viruses and malware without the hassle of constant alerts and sweeps." If this is the case, then howcome in download .com, i have seen internet security programs for the imac?
So if one day i accidentelly stumble across a website that has malware in it, will the imac protect me?
Theres this website that i feel to afraid to go to because some people reported a malware threat on that website. But will i be able to safely go to that website with the imacs security?
Im just confused that there are these internet security programs for the imac despite of the imacs built in security. In addition to Kappy's excellent advice, you need to remember that only you can protect yourself (and your Mac) - for instance, I never go near any torrent site. Not only are most torrent downloads illegal, but quite a few softwares on those sites contain some not-so-nice additions (malware, etc). So, no, your Mac would not protect you there - you need to protect yourself; it is called "responsible websurfing".
I only download software from reputable sites (i.e. the developer); I don't go to questionable sites at all (there is a great plugin for Firefox called "WOT" - it grades the sites from excellent to "poor reputation") - if you use Safari, check to see if it is available there. And I don't download "free" software or music or whatever that costs elsewhere - I pay for it.
And, here is another article you might want to look at:
