Cookies and Safari Preferences

Hi,
I'm trying to verify Cookies are turned on because i'm having trouble with a particular site. The Safari 'Help' says go to Preferences and click on Security, Where the Bleep is that? Where is the Security tab.
please help, thank you!
Tom

Hello,
In Safari, from the Menu Bar, select Safari/About Safari. The Safari version number is displayed there.
3.2.1 ??
So, in your Safari/Preferences pane, you only see the General tab?
No Appearance/Bookmarks/Tabs/RSS/Autofill/Security/ or Advanced tabs?

  • "Remove all website data," cookies, and extension preferences

    Safari 5.1 Lion
Can someone please confirm the following (very unfortunate) behavior?
    1) Check the option "Block cookies from 3rd parties and advertisers"
    2) Visit any major site (CNN, CNET, etc.)
    3) 3rd party cookies and tracking data is still acquired from doubleclick, etc. despite step #1
In other words, Safari 5.1 does not seem to be blocking third party cookies. I have seen other threads documenting this. What's worse is that "removing all website data" (Preferences | Privacy tab) *also* deletes your extension preferences. ***?
Chrome and Firefox separate "local data" (extension prefs and site offline storage) from cookie/tracking data. Safari is no longer an option to me until this is fixed.

I, too, am perplexed by this change. Then again, I've been perplexed by most of the changes Apple has made to products/os in the last few years. I'm thinking that I may not only change browsers, but hardware/software also. It's issues like this that make me wonder if anyone on the Apple design team actually uses any of their products, or maybe they think we are all just too ignorant to be able to use a computer.
Making things simple to use shouldn't equate to removing advanced functionality, but it seems that's what Apple believes it to be.
    Really disgusted now.
    Thanks Apple.

  • Has anyone ever encountered a "shockwave player error" window when deleting cookies in Safari preferences under privacy?

This window appears multiple times whenever I try to delete cookies. This afternoon, on the amazon.com site, the window kept opening and would not allow me to do anything else. I had to shut down my iMac and restart several times before I could get it working again. I have had this problem for a couple of years now(even when I was running previous operating systems). What is the deal here, and can it be fixed?

I was having the same problem after updating to the Safari 5.1.2 and noticed, also, that the cookies wren't really clearing... after opening preferences again (after clearing them), there would be a few that would be added back.
I think it's all related to a cookie issue that started with the safari update.
I went back to Safari 5.05 using Pacifier as it wouldn't install under Leopard 10.6.8 which I am running.

  • Third Party Cookies and Safari's handling thereof...

So now that I'm having to use Safari, I'm getting all my regular sites set up, and when I attempt to access my credit union's "bill pay" feature, it won't work because I have the setting set to block cookies "From third parties and advertisers".  The only other options are "Always" and "Never".
Is there no "Exceptions LIst" where you can tell it to accept cookies from specific "thirdy parties" (such as the "Bill Pay" service my credit union uses)?
Isn't there a way to get Safari to "ask" if you want it to accept cookies?  That's what I was used to with Firefox.  It would ask for each website and if I wanted it, I'd click yes.
    Doesn't Safari have anything similar?

Downloaded and installed it, but it doesn't seem to have any affect on the "third party cookies" problem.  I go to the "bill pay" section of the credit union website and it just shows a blank page.
So do I have to set Safari to "ALWAYS" accept third party cookies no matter what, and then use this other program to delete the hundreds that will be accepted that I don't want?  That seems very cumbersome.  As a long-time Mac user, I am sort of shocked at how little thought seems to have gone into cookie-handling.  I would also figure someone might have written an "extension" to give more user control over how cookies are dealt with.
Safari has frustrated me greatly so far.  There have been other issues as well, such as some "embedded" videos on some webpages just don't even show up,..there is nothing clickable to "make it load" or anything...just a blank spot on the page.  Other webpages formats are completely screwed up by Safari...it puts text and headers in wrong places, and won't display some pages at all.

  • Mavericks and Safari -- preferences

When I opened preferences to change so that Safari won't open with "top sites," I couldn't close the preference box after making the change.  I have to completely close Safari, using the "close all windows" to get it to close.  Also, when I open a link from a page (like in Facebook), it opens a blank page.  I did want to open blank pages when I open a new tab, but I don't want it to do it ALL the time.  Thanks for your help!

I spoke too soon.  It is not working.  I have no idea why it did for a few minutes and then stopped.  In the preferences, the extensions tab says that there is "localize extension string not found."  When it was working for that little time, it did not have this message, so I'm guessing it has something to do with this.

  • Is it possible to lock out a specific cookie in Safari

Is it possible to permanantly "lock out" a specific cookie in Safari? I understand using preferences to provide details and to remove specific cookies but I would like to prevent some cookies from ever being allowed. Is there an advanced blocking method I haven't found yet?

No, you are not the only one having issue with management of cookies in Safari.
Many have expressed a wish for blacklisting cookies.
Safari > Preferences > Privacy  > Block cookies > Always
Click the question mark at the bottom. This is the explanation  I got.
"Select to always block cookies. This may prevent you from using some websites."
I am not aware any command using terminal to accomplish the objective.
    Best.

  • Clean Install and iChat and Safari

My computer has reached a point where it takes 45 minutes - 3 hours to restart. Everything takes 10x longer than it should. I have tried everything i can think of (regular reinstall, limiting the number of applications running, removing peripherals etc) so unless there are other recommendations I have decided to run a clean install. I have copied all important data to an external hard drive but I am concerned about losing iChat and Safari preferences and settings. I was hoping someone could let me know the best way to carry these over.
    Thanks

Hi G^B, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
IChat prefs are stored online, for Safari just copy the Safari folder.
Here is a list of where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your data in ~/Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
~ /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/Safari (copy the whole folder)
~/Library/Application Support/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Pictures/iPhoto library
    ~/Music/iTunes
    ~/Movies/iMovie
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/Webfoundation/HTTPcookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in Documents/Microsoft user data
    Also in ~ /Library/Preferences/Microsoft
internet explorer favorites are in ~/Library/Preferences/Explorer/favorites.html

  • Can't seem to Remove Cookies and Website Data

Every time I try removing all cookies and website data from my macbook pro... it keeps coming back, as if I didn't remove anything!... What's happening? ... I'm going to Safari/Preferences/Privacy/Remove All Website Data... then clicking the "Remove All" button, and All the cookies dissapear ... then I restart my computer, and when I go back and check, all the cookies and website data are still there!.... any clues?

This has been the case for  years.
Google alone once launched after removing cookies, installs many of the same cookies.
Safari > Preference > Privacy > Remove "All Website Data"
    Do it twice.
Next do a "Reset Safari" from the Safari menu.

  • How do i find "do not track" utility for cookies on safari?

How do i find "do not track " utility for safari to safeguard my macbook from website cookies?

    Safari > Preferences > Privacy
    Website tracking:
Put a checkmark in the box next to   "Ask websites not to track me".
    Best.

  • Unable to set cookie preferences in safari 5.1.5 by going to safari/preferences/privacy.  It used to be there and now there is nothing showing under that tab.

I had looked at the cookies a couple of weeks ago.  I deleted all cookies.
A few days ago my email was hacked into which sent a spam email to all my contacts.  I changed my password to that account, warned everyone in my contacts, and haven't had a problem with email since.
However, I tried to do the 'delete all cookies' again and when I go to safari/preferences/privacy...there is nothing on that screen under that tab.  Not even a question mark. I changed my history items to be removed every day from every week but don't think that would be the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Uninstall SIMBL as follows.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar, then enter the following text in the box that opens:
    /Library
A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Application Support/SIMBL
    InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
    LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • My safari preferences/ security screen has changed and no longer addresses cookies.  There is now a Preferences/Privacy screen that allows one to delete cookies, although it is harder to do than the older security screen.  Was this an update?

My Safari Preferences/Security screen has changed and no longer addresses cookies. Rather, there is a new Preferences/Privacy screen that allows you to manipulate cookies, but it is not as easy to use as when cookies were on the security screen. Was this an update?  Has this change affected anyone else? This is strange, because  Safari Help still states cookies are manipulated on the Security screen, even though the screen has changed and no longer addresses cookies.

Presuming you're referring to Safari 5.1, yes, it's moved, but I don't see it as being harder. Now you can clear all privacy-related items - cookies, cache and history - with one button, the "Remove All Website Data" button. If you want to work with individual cookies, it's still just one button, the "Details" button. So no, I don't see it as being more difficult.
    Regards.

  • I want to empty the Safari cache in OS 10.8.5, but cannot find the cache in the drop down menus. Where is it? Or do I go to preferences-privacy and select remove all cookies and website data?

I received a 'bogus' email saying I had a virus and to click to scan my entire OS. I did not click - I trashed the email.
I wanted to empty my cache but couldn't find it (OS 8.10.8.5) -- In the main menu, under Safari, the only thing I found was to select preferences, then privacy -- where a window showed an option of removing some or all cookies and other website data.
Is that what I should do or is there a cache somewhere on the laptop?
    Thanks

You were scammed. There's nothing wrong with your computer. You don't need to empty the cache.

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

Even after setting system preferences to Never accept cookies and having deleted all cookies, Safari continues to add cookies.  I've tried to Reseting Safari several time but the problem persists.  This is occurring under two different user logins one of whom is an administrator the other a standard user.  How can I get safari to Never accept cookies?  This is a recent problem because in the past it used to work properly. Any idea what might be going on here?

    Hi David:
I did read (yesterday in another thread) about a similar problem.  I cannot test it myself as I accept cookies (from sites I visit) and do not want to delete all of mine for a test.
I do not know whether it meets your requirements, but you could turn on private browsing.  I use that (or Microsoft's variant on IE) when I use public computers.
