Cookies and stuff in normal application...

I have a stand alone application that is not a servlet nor reside on a server. I need to authenticate the users, can I use cookie servlet code in my regular applicaiton? I am trying to imagine if it is possibe for me to interact with a cgi script (we arleady have in place) that takes the username/pass and returns a cookie. Other suggestions are welcome...

No. This application has nothing to do with browsers, I just connect to servers (usually web on port 80) using sockets. This all works fine, but now I want to make it more secure and have some authentication at the startup... I know of a cgi application we have that takes a username/password and returns a cookie and if I can just do that all will be well. The problem is I don't know of how to go about doing that.
The problem with using the code from Servlets is that they have some request response objects that don't normally reside in a application (or would be hard to create) plus I don't know much about how they are instantiated and stuff... I assume there is a way but if I could just use a normal piece of code to connect to a web server to do this and retrieve the cookie I would be fine. The cookie is just a by product of the process, my code will get it and store it and then only use it for later authentication (it doesn't have to read the contents or write contents to it), merely stores it until it has to pass it back to the server for auth.

  • Question about setting cookies and custom authentication

I have a question about setting cookies.
I have two different 'projects' in HTMLDB - we will call them App1 and App2.
I also have two different connection configurations setup in the DADs.conf file. - we will call them Connect1 and Connect2.
App1 is setup to use database authentication (no user is specified in the DAD) and uses Connect1. Once the user successfully logs in, we set a username cookie (this is a persistent connection).
We created a custom authenticatoin scheme for App2 - this scheme checks for the username cookie (set by App1). We would like for App2 to use Connect2 (HTMLDB_PUBLIC_USER is the default user specified and it uses connection pooling).
Is it possible to set a cookie from App1, Connect1 for App2, Connect2 - then redirect to App2 and pick up that cookie?
Here is an example of what we are trying to accomplish:
A user loggs into App1, we set a cookie, and the user is redirected to App2. If the cookie exists, we allow them access to the home page in App2, if no cookie, we redirect back to a 'Login Failed' page in App1. We don't want App2 to use the same database connection as App1 though, we need App2 to use connection pooling.
Is this possible? OR...Is there a better way to accomplish what we want to do?
This is an enhancement to an existing app. Our requirements are to use Database Authentication (setup where pass expires after 60 days or so, cannot reuse last 3 passwords, etc.) - which is already setup and being used by other applications in our organization. All of our users have accounts in the database. We don't want users to have a new username/pass - and we don't want to manage a separate group for HTMLDB apps.
The existing application uses HTMLDB's built in authentication - which uses database username/pass, and it uses connection pooling, but we cannot handle the pass expire stuff in it, unless there's something we're not seeing or understanding - at least that's how our DBA explained it to us.
Any help with this will be appreciated so much. I can send you the code we have if needed.
    Thanks!

Same problem here.  I have so many problems with this remote app.  Is there an iTunes API? I would like to write my own remote app that actually works.

  • Installing iCab and Stuffit to iMac OS 8.6 from CD burned on Windows XP

    Hi there
I used to have an iMac as you can see from my details but swapped over to the dreaded Windows about 4 years ago now.
My brother was given an old iMac recently, which is running OS 8.6 He couldn't get IE to work as the version was too old, so he couldn't get on the net to download iCab, which I suggested (used to have it on the iMac I had). So, I downloaded iCab and Stuffit for OS 8.6 from the net onto my Windows XP laptop and then burned a cd for him. Trouble is, my brother says the cd won't work on his iMac. He said it makes a whirring sound like it's trying to read it but then stops and nothing happens.
I said I didn't think it was a compatibility problem between Windows and Mac, as the files dowloaded were Mac files.
Any help would be appreciated. It's amazing how quickly I've forgotten how to do things on the Mac but I still feel loyal to Macs rather than Windows!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Esther,
The original browser was an old version of IE and my brother couldn't get onto the net at all with it.
Was it possibly Internet Explorer 4.01 (in an Internet folder)? Usually, nearly all browsers will work to a certain extent, but an old version may prevent you from opening many web pages and from using some functions. An Internet service provider may require proxy data (under the web browser preferences).
an error message coming up that Microsoft no longer supports that version and to download the latest version
That almost sounds like a message appearing once you actually are on the Internet.
so, that puts paid to the e-mail idea as well, as he can't get a connection at all.
A browser would, of course, be needed for web mail. However, a separate email application (e.g., Eudora or Outlook Express) should be fine, as long as the Internet connection as such is working.
The connection is a dial-up one.
For the Internet connection, the things to check would be that the TCP/IP control panel has been set to connect via PPP and that everything in the Modem and Remote Access control panels is OK (the ISP should be able to help with details).
I did check the cd after I'd burned it to make sure the programs were on it
As indicated earlier, that CD should (normally) be readable in an iMac.
Thanks for the info about the extensions.
The extensions are important. Otherwise, the iMac may not properly show discs and/or contained files.

  • How do I get rid of 97] in Cookies and other website data

When I open Preferences/Privacy and select "Details" under "Cookies and other website data" the first entry which pops up is
                 97] plug-ins
If I highlight this entry and click remove, It is removed for perhaps 10 seconds, and then re-appears in the list.
    1- What is this?
2- How do I get rid of it?
This is clearly a prvacy issue, or Apple would not be listing it in this listing with the associated warning.

Log out, then log back in while holding down the shift key after you enter your login password. Keep holding until the desktop appears. That will prevent third-party add-ons from loading. Try again to delete that item.
If you still can't delete it, and you still want to, proceed as follows.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now. If you skip this step, no one but you will be responsible for the consequences.
    Quit Safari if it’s running.
    Step 1
Select /Applications/Safari in the Finder and open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in that window labeled “Open in 32-bit mode.” If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the window.
Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar (Lion) or open the Library subfolder of your home folder (pre-Lion). Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Caches/Metadata/Safari
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Finder window open. Try Safari again.
    Step 2
If it still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder, and move the following file to the Desktop:
    Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then delete the following items (some may not exist):
    Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
    Cookies/Cookies.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    PubSub/Database
    Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. You don’t need to restore the files you deleted in step 1.
Ok... completed step1 with no change.
went on to "part of "step 2...
I kept the Bookmarks.plist, but then deleted the assortment of safari related Caches and Cookies
    Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
    Cookies/Cookies.plist
(I found several entries in Cache, but forgot to write down which ones I deleted ... sorry.)
did not delete any of the preferences or the last two entries in your list above.
Tried again and "the perp" was still there. "Remove all" on the Details tab did not change things...
However, there were now only 2 entries -- the 97] AND my bank's entry (Chase)!
Going back to the main privacy tab and clicking "Remove all Website Data" this time DID remove the last two entries.
    =====
Now when I open the details tab, (I run my own webserver as my home page) Safari showed ONLY the cache entry for my server, no cookies.
However, I then noticed something quite intersting.
I left the details tab open and pulled to the side (the joy of having a 27 inch iMac) and naviaged to Apple.com
and then to support and then logged in to here.
As I was doing this. the Details window first showed, "Apple.com" .. Cache, Cookies, Local Storage
but then virtually immediately poped up entries:
    doubleclick.net ... Cache
    edgekey.net ... Cache
    google.com ... Cookies
Very interesting, both from the point of view that "details" was showing me what was happening in "real time."
And the fact that, even with zero external ads, the web site, Apple.com, was inserting entries in the cache for doubleclick.net and edgekey.net. I can "almost" understand the "google.com" cookie, ecept for the fact that the search engine selected in the tool bar is "bing."... as I said "interesting."
With this new "insight" on the Details screen, It may be possible to determine WHERE this 97] actually came from. However, I would still like an explanation of what it actually is.... since the "]" (right square bracket) character is evidently a "special character" for search engines -- google, Yaho and Bing all treat it the same way -- they ignor it.... even when the entire 3 character string is quoted -- "97]" -- the pages returned all are for entries with only 97 in them.

  • How can I keep all of my apps and stuff from one ID and move them to another ID without having to buy them all over again?

Me and my mom share an account and I bought all my apps and stuff on their. so I made my own account so that it would just have my stuff and it would charge to my credit card. So I was wondering how you can sink all the apps and stuff from one ID to another or link the accounts so that I don't have to repurchase everything.

You can render the ebook on an instructional application called Zankura. Not only can you control the screen scrolling, but all the students can freely annotate with their stylus. www.zankura.com.

    Hey menaelraghy,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines what is backed up, you may be interested in this section:
    iTunes: About iOS backups

    - Keychain (includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications)
If you encrypt the backup, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you're restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you need to enter these passwords again.

  • I want to empty the Safari cache in OS 10.8.5, but cannot find the cache in the drop down menus. Where is it? Or do I go to preferences-privacy and select remove all cookies and website data?

I received a 'bogus' email saying I had a virus and to click to scan my entire OS. I did not click - I trashed the email.
I wanted to empty my cache but couldn't find it (OS 8.10.8.5) -- In the main menu, under Safari, the only thing I found was to select preferences, then privacy -- where a window showed an option of removing some or all cookies and other website data.
Is that what I should do or is there a cache somewhere on the laptop?
    Thanks

You were scammed. There's nothing wrong with your computer. You don't need to empty the cache.

Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.

Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • There is an inconsistency between the authentication mode of target web application and the source web application after migrating to claims

I've had my farm upgraded from SP2010 to SP2013 for over 6 months now and all is well, however, I was refreshing my staging environment from production and I noticed that one of the databases still shows these errors when I run test-spcontentdatabase:
    Category             : Configuration
    Error             : False
    UpgradeBlocking : False
Message           : The [SharePoint Web App] web application is configured with claims authentication mode however the content database you are trying to attach is intended to be used against
    a windows classic authentication mode.
Remedy              : There is an inconsistency between the authentication mode of target web application and the source web application. Ensure that the authentication mode setting in upgraded web application is the
same as what you had in previous SharePoint 2010 web application. Refer to the link "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=236865" for more information.
This doesn't make sense considering I converted the production web application to claims during the upgrade and then verified all sites were working with claims logins. I also verified that existing AD user identities were converted to claims by checking out
the database tables. Yet test-spcontentdatabase still thinks there is a mismatch here.
My farm is SP1 and no further CUs. The point of this particular refresh is so I can update to the November CUs in my test farm. Anyone else see this? Seems like it's a bug/safe to ignore because my stuff is working.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Safari allows 3rd party cookies and all cookies even when prefernces are set to "never allow" with Mac os 10.6.8

safari ALWAYS allows 3rd party cookies and all cookies even when set to "block cookies: always" and "from 3rd party and advertisers."  I have removed the website data, emptied the cache, reset safari, erased the history and it STILL dumps cookies.  (For example, if I go to the usgov weather website only I end up with 11 cookies, the top one being "addthis.com" listed as cashed in local storage.  But didn't I just empty the cache... multiple times??? Is my Safari application "broken" or "corrupt."  Can the application be renewed so that it actually does what it is commanded to do?

    Not using any extensions, Andy.
Allowed a guest account and tested that.  Lots of cache/cookies showed up for my "guest" that on face value, appeared 3rd party:  the familiar "addthis.com" cache and others including a facebook cache and I did not, nor have ever, participated in facebook. But it could be that the "trusted" site my virtual guest visited had a relationship with facebook such that my COMPUTER "friended" facebook even though my guest and I most certainly would have declined the invitation :-)  But what I really don't get is why washington post cookies keep showing up every single time.  Isn't that the absolute definition of 3rd party cookies?!
    forgive my rant.
On the other hand, when I logged out as guest, all data was automatically deleted, and when I relogged in as guest, it appeared that all the data, including cached data, had indeed been deleted.  But when I relogged in as myself, the same old garbage reappeared in the cache and cookie bin. The fact is, there appears to be no such thing as truly and completely emptying ones cache, resetting ones browser, or deleting ones cookies. They are here to stay.
(And, oh yes, I have tried logging out, turning off and on the computer right after performing emptying tasks, etc.)

  • Are iPad Safari's Cookies And Website Data The Same Thing?

Are they the same, and do they collect indefinitely until you manually clear them?

    Sheden-
It is not clear if they are the same thing, but I do not believe so.  There are two places to manually delete Data:
    1.  Settings - Safari - Clear Cookies and Data
    2.  Settings - Safari - Advanced - Website Data - Remove All Website Data
I tried clearing Cookies and Data, and the data previously listed under "Website Data" went away.  When I tried just "Remove All Website Data", it went away again.  I can not tell if Cookies also went away since I do not know how to examine them.
After clearing the website data, images on a facebook page had to reload when I revisited it.  Normally they come up immediately.  I know the images are definitely not "Cookies"!
As far as I kinow, website data collects indefinitely.  I suggest you search the web for information about Cookies, to see if they have a limited lifetime.
