Cookies cleared constantly in Safari

I'm having an odd problem where my cookies seem to keep on being cleared in Safari. Sometimes this will happen when I quit and relaunch Safari, sometimes it will happen while I'm running Safari, and I've been able to find no pattern for when it happens. I'm on a laptop and frequently connect to various wireless networks, but that doesn't seem to be related to the problem. I do not have Private Browsing turned on, though I've tried turning it on and off again just to make sure it wasn't on. This did not happen in the Safari 3 beta that I was running on Tiger, as far as I know.
Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? If not, do you have any ideas about good ways to figure out what's going on? So far, I haven't been able to find a pattern; my cookies just disappear sometimes. I don't usually notice right away, but I notice when I go to a site that I was previously logged in to, and suddenly I'm logged out.

Well, it's not the solution, but it looks like one of the causes has been found:
http://www.unsanity.org/archives/apple/applehates_bugfilers.php
It turns out that the bug in Safari is triggered by... filing a bug report with Apple! There may be other sites that trigger the bug as well, but Apple's bug report website does it reliably any time you view a bug report that you have submitted.
Oh, and Time Machine makes a lovely way of working around the issue. Just do a "Back Up Now" before you use the bug reporter (under the Time Machine dock menu), and then restore your cookies file after Safari eats it (the file is in ~/Library/Cookies).

  • On my mini ipad, I cleared the cookies/histories in the safari setting.  But what does the advance-setting of the clearing the website data does?  What's that used for? Thank you!

On my mini ipad, when I'm on the internet -- a few times I will see a blue small pop-up boxes telling me to allow down/load or add something like the bubble-splash game or something similar.  I jusr click ignore and it goes away.. I'm not sure why it's showing up lately.. I'm not sure if it's a virus or hacked in or a web brower matter..
Should I go to the cookies/histories in the safari setting and have it cleared out?  Will that help resolve that??
And what does the advance-setting of the clearing the website data does?  Sorry, I'm not familiar.. what's is that used for? Should I use that feature as well?? Thank you!

    This indicates corrupt files.
    A restore should resolve.

  • HT201413 I get error 20 when I try to download updates to installed Apple software  I have two users on the IMac. I resolve the problem by clearing all cookies on both users Safari. Why do I need to do this? What is going on?

I get Error 20 when I try to download updates for installed Apple apps on my IMac.  I have two users on the IMac, and I resolve the problem by clearing all cookies on both users Safari, opening and closing the App Store for each user, shutting down and restarting the IMac for each user, until finally the download works. There must be an easier way.  I also have an Air, where I have no problems whatsoever. Both machines have Doorstop and MacKeeper with the same settings, so I have ruled those programs out as the cause. I believe iot is because I have two users - any ideas?

Please read this whole message and be sure you understand all of it before doing anything. Back up all data before making changes to your settings.
    Write down the server addresses.
Click Cancel to close the Advanced sheet. Unlock the preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Open the DNS tab again and change the server addresses to the following:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself.
    2. I’m not advocating Google or anything else as a DNS provider; the server addresses are offerred merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

If you had backed up your iPad prior to deleting the Safari history, that history should be in the last backup.

  • HT1677 Clear History in Safari

Does clearing the history in Safari have any effect on the speed with which web pages are loaded?

Not so much the history, but clearing cookies and data can help. If you Safari is loading pages slowly try clearing the cookies and data, close Safari and then reboot the iPad. That might help.
To close Safari, tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the Safari icon. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    * "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

    Quit Safari.
Click out on your desktop somewhere to get Finder menu on the top menu bar.  Then look over to the right, and select the "Go" menu while holding down the "Option"button.  You will then see an option for "Library" right under your home folder on that list.
That is your hidden Users Library.  Open that Library, go down to Caches.  Open that, and then look for apple.com.Safari.  Take that file to the trash.
    Restart Safari.
I tried it, I do not know what the consequences are yet

It''s a bit drastic, but that clears Safari cache. There's another way of clearing the cache:
    1. Open Safari, go to Safari menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Advanced, and tick "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
    2. Close Preferences, and go to Develop menu > Delete cache

    Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db (or ApplicationCache.db) file from the com.apple. Safari folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. Launch Safari. Try the back button.

  • My history does not totally clear out of Safari

I have gone to settings and hit cleared history and cache buttons.  However, some sites did not clear and auto populate as I start typing.  Any other suggestions to totall clear history from Safari.  I also cleared what was there on the Safari page itself.  These few sites do not show up to clear.

I have the latest version. I have History only selected. When I manually select Clear Recent History, it deletes some items but not everything. I just performed Clear Recent History and 8 sites are still showing up. None of them are in my Bookmarks and most of them I haven't visited in weeks. It is a real pain finding the sites that I would like to select when all this garbage fills up the list.

  • Build in clear type in Safari -how to cut off?

Somebody know how to cut off CLear TyPe in Safari 3.1?

You can manually disable Apple's version of text antialiasing by following the instructions found here:
    http://webkit.org/blog/168/gdi-text-on-windows/
Note that this will also disable some of Safari's advanced text handling (and probably hasn't been extensively tested); it might be best if you wait for Apple to roll in the code that allows you to switch between ClearType and Apple's, which seems to be on the horizon. fwiw.

Note that such issues can be caused by security software that blocks Firefox and possibly isn't initialized when you get (got) this issue.
So if it happens again then try to remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
