Cool and quiet can't be disable?

Hi, Is it me or cool N quiet can't be disable?
on CPUZ and coretemp i keep seeing my mhz drop, i want to disable it to run overclock test. But it still doing it after i adjust FSB and landed on 3640 mhz. I have read it should be disable.

  • Lockups caused by Cool and Quiet?

Since a few months, I have a MSI K8T Neo2 FIR motherboard with an Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) CPU, equipped with 2x512 Mb dual channel memory. No overclocking or any non-standard BIOS-settings; BIOS version 9.1. The system works great, but for one thing: I had frequent lockups...
After some time, I started noticing that my lockups occurred only when the system (running Gentoo Linux) was not doing very much (idle, or only doing some browsing with Firefox). Because of that, I started suspecting that my Cool and Quiet-setup had something to do with it: the lockups occurred when my system was running at 1000 MHz, never when running at 2000 MHz. Since I turned off Cool and Quiet (in the Linux kernel, I didn't touch the BIOS-settings) a week ago, I haven't had a single lockup, even though I've kept my computer running 24 hours a day mostly. So I guess my guess was right.
Can anyone explain what exactly is happening? Why is my system less stable when in 1000 MHz than in 2000 MHz? Can I do something to make the 1000 MHz-mode stable and return to running Cool and Quiet?

    hi,
i have the same problem with the same chipset. (even if its another mb)
your post has been a big hint because after my lockups occured i tried to reproduce them with system/cpu torture tests but have not been succsessful. after that i declared that my system has been miraculously cured and went back to normal (i.e. mostly idle) usage and. bang, lockups again. so i disabled cool'n quiet for now and will see if that helps.

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • Cool and Quiet ok to use on NF980-G65 / 965 CPU?

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's safe to use the cool and quiet option in the bios on the NF980-G65 motherboard with the AMD 965 Black Edition CPU.
I had the MSI overclocking center open (I'm not overclocking just monitoring the temperatures) and heard this faint siren sound, thought it was one of my neighbors car alarms.  Once I discovered that it was coming from my computer I opened HWMonitor and noted that the CPU fan was only running at 3%, and I guess that's lower than what ever is configured in the MSI Overclocking center since the alarm noise was coming from the overclocking center.
The CPU was still in the safe zone at about 54°c at the time that the CPU fan was down running at 3%, my guess was due to cool and quiet taking over maybe.
I've read that this CPU can go pretty high in temps but of course we should try to keep it as cool as possible so this leaves me baffled about the cool and quiet (if that's what causes it) to drop the CPU fan down to about 1680RPM since the temps seem like they would have kept rising if the fan doesn't speed up.
Anyway, is it safe to use Cool and Quiet on this mainboard with this CPU?

Unfortunately, I live in a 40+ year old house, in the desert, where our now summer month temps are into the 3 digit marks (100-121°f) and this house doesn't have insulation in the walls so the temps inside are only maintained at 76°f and the computer room is a bit hotter than that even with the central air going and an additional window a/c unit in the computer room.
I am using the Thermaltake Element G box which has a huge fan on the side door, a very large fan on the front, an equally large fan to exhaust on the back, an large fan again on the top of the case and finally, 2 60mm fans on the back to exhaust near the video cards and so my CPU runs probably warmer than the average person that is able to keep their rooms down to 65°f unfortunately.
Anyway, the cool and quiet used to be turned off and I had the other options on so that it would try to maintain the CPU at 45°c which it's perfectly capable of doing when I'm not playing games, and of course it's still capable fo keeping it under 60°c when playing games, and most of the time the temps dont' get above 57°c when playing demanding games but it concerns me that the CPU fan would drop to only 3% using cool and quiet and I'll likely turn it off again but I'm still curious if there is any known issues with running cool and quiet on this mainboard and CPU.
    Thanks for the reply

  • Cool and Quiet Not Working

Just re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed everything. Cool and Quiet is enabled in BIOS and AMD drivers are installed. However, according to CoreCenter, the CPU and fan speeds never change. The CPU constantly reads 2.2Ghz. On my previous installation everything worked without a problem and the CPU used to drop to about 800Mhz. Cool and Quiet is enabled in Corecenter.
Does anyone please have any idea what the problem could be.
    Thankyou.

I don't know about fan speeds, Core Center isn't supported on the RS480, so I use PC Alerts 4 utility from MSI. But to check if the CPU is in the low power state, I just go to Control Panel and System then it tells you what your CPU speed is. Alternatively, you can right-click on My Computer and go to Properties, that pulls up the same window.

  • Cool and Quiet question

Does cool and quiet reduce the fan speeds of all the fans plugged into the mobo or just the CPU fan?

CoreCenter's Cool'n'Quiet only adjusts CPU fan speed while AMD's Cool'n'Quiet  adjusts CPU speed. Here's a link to AMD's guide

  • Question vis Cool and Quiet

    OK.
    Software installed
Cool and quiet enabled in Bios before download and installation
Minimal Power Management selected in the Power options
With all that done, surely the System reading should show a slightly lower Clock Speed.
    Currently it's on 2.2 GHZ.
Have I missed soemthing in Bios??
Stop Press, Edit: Ignore my ramblings Richard
After a while the gizmo senses the lesser demand for power and adjusts accordingly
Sit back, and drink those beers

you might need a new bios update.  I did for my venice and my k8neo4 sli plat

  • Cool and Quiet on K8T Neo2-F V2.0

    I have been playing a bit with a K8T Neo2-F V2.0 (s939) and a Winchester 3200+.
There seem to be a problem with the CPU fan control while using Cool and Quiet.
BIOS is v3.6, os WINXP SP3, latest AMD proc driver installed.
CnQ enabled in BIOS, Minimal power management in power options.
The C'nQ itself works fine, but the fan blowing full blast 3300rpm all times.
Is this a known problem? CnQ work fine in kubuntu 64-bit as well but no fan slowdown.
Corecenter does not support this board.
Tried speedfan, but on a brief test could not get it control the fan, unless I did something wrong.

This board has no option for Smartfan in BIOS.
From the manual, whatever it means for this board(seem like its just copied from a more feature rich board manual):
"If the mainboard has a System Hardware
Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take
advantage of the CPU fan control."
Currently using the stock HS& fan. Need to find a working solution for fan control.

  • K8N NEO2 cool and quiet problem

I noticed that when I enable cool and quiet, my CPU clock gets stuck at 1 GHz (5x multi), it will not go full speed even at max load. Does anyone have any ideas?

Default xp installation use processr.sys Microsoft signed as cpu driver .
With AMD installed cpu driver it updates to amdk8.sys Advanced Micro Devices signed .
As for why the driver states version 1.1.0.0 i wonder myself .
Think that the changes are in the inf/cat/installshield file ,thats what i think when looking at the revision history.
    Edit:
It is the file cpudriver.EXE which is 1.1.0.14 revision
    (http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/cpudriver.EXE)
The amdk8.sys file is still at version 1.1.0.0 .

  • AMD Athlon 64 Cool and Quiet - not working

    Hello,
everything is now working on my Arch workstation, except c'n'q.
First, I searched the forum for information and tried quite a lot of things, yet it is not working.
    The following modules are loaded:
    * powernow-k8
    * cpufreq_ondemand
    As for the daemons:
    * acpid
    * cpufreqd
The CPU is always up running at full speed. In other distros I was used to daemons like powernowd who did the frequency scaling, and so I went on and pacman'ed powernowd (pkgbuild), yet it does not work. Of course c'n'q is enabled in BIOS. Btw, I also tried athcool.
I'd be glad for any help.

Cool n' Quiet works perfectly for me.

  • A cool and quiet comment.

I gave up on C&Q after bios v1.2 did not fix the C&Q problems I had. It would never go above 1800mhz and it showed in my benchmarking results. However, all of the current discussions about C&Q and Corecenter made me feel Id give it another try, since im 2 bios newer at v1.4.
I gotta say that I absolutly love it. My temps have decreased dramatically and best of all, the cpu now goes the whole way back up to its full potential when needed. I ran several benchmarks that proved it to me and also can see it go up with corecenter open. I even restarted several times to make sure I did not have that problem with it as in a recent thread.  I love this board and MSI more and more everyday.
Here are the temps now, and they where read after I ran all the following benchmarks...Im sure glad I didnt waste money on a more expensive heatsink.
    pcmark2004=4507
    3Dmark2003=6751
Every benchmark the same as before, gotta love that at such lower temperatures, about 10'C. Im glad I gave MSI a second chance to redeem themselves on this issue.
I wanted to add that corecenter read my 12v @ 11.91 even before i enabled C&Q. So C&Q is not the cause of that reading. Its being read wrong because in the bios its 12.16, and was being read wrong before C&Q. Dont know why.

    hi tim,
lucky you. for me things went vice versa. when I built this system about 2 month ago, everything went cool and quit. cpu went down to 800mhz as it should and fanspeed was reduced to about 1300 rpm. to get rid of other problems I went from bios to bios and from beta to beta, now running at 1.5.2. I sorted out all the other problems except for occasional bluescreens (bad poop header). somewhere on the way I lost full function of c&q. now all it does is regulate the fan. for it to do that I have to go into corecenter after startup an enable c&q each and every time. than the fan reduces to 1300 in a second and everything for the fan is okay. but not for cpu. nothing happens. everything is installed and configured right. I cant go back to former bios cause of other probs they sorted out. might go to 1.5.5 today to see what happens. for temps I went from high 60s in first 2 bios to mid 40s now for cpu.

  • Help reading info in Cool and Quiet

My vcore shows a color red while everything else is yellow and it reads 1.550 V.  What does this mean, is it bad, how do i fix it?

The newest version of core center does that.
All that is, it is showing that if you switch to Manual mode, you have vcore set to the highest it will allow you to go (1.55).
The older version on the msi cd doesnt make it red.  So you can use the one on the CD if that bothers you.
What the vcore is actually at is shown in the area that doesnt have to be flipped out.

  • CALM, COOL, and QUIET

just do a PMU resset and your MBP will we cool as a cucumber. worked perfectly on two MBPs. cool bliss does exist with a MBP.
    heres how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

Yes I think this PMU fix doesn't do anything about heat.
FYI, two MBPs, 2.16GHz, 2GB ram, one with 5400rpm 120GB drive, one with 100GB 7200rpm drive.
No heat difference at all. The 7200rpm has a little more vibration and hum but no heat difference.
I wonder if this really is fixing anything or the MBP
is just not being run under a load after people reset
    the PMU.
My 2.16 MBP runs within acceptable temps just surfing
the web or running non-intensive apps but with a
CDROM in or running games, etc. it is literally
scalding hot above the function keys and very hot on
the bottom panel nearer to the LCD hinge.
This happens on mine with the display set to
auto-adjust or not, and with energy settings on
Normal and Better Perfromance. Also have it elevated
on a Podium Pad but still far too hot.
Wonder if people with the 5400 RPM drives are also
having heat issues or is this more the 2.16 GHz, 7200
    RPM machines?

  • MOVED: K9A no Cool and Quiet in Windows Vista

This topic has been moved to Vista problems.

    Hi there,
are you sure that the powersaver was properly installed? I would suggest to set all BIOS settings to default and reinstall the "common modules" and the "Toshiba powersaver" because these are the programs which are relevant foe such things like powersaving modes and standby/hibernation
Would be also interesting if you can answer the question if it worked with XP (I mean hibernation). You could also check if the "hibernation file" is set properly.
You can check this by taking a look into powersaver and looking which settings were made..
Please give some feedback because something is missing, some little detail which I need to help you.
    Thx

It appears that this was added to MSI today.  I had already installed the AMD 64 driver 1.2.2.0 (even though it appears as 1.2.2.1 at AMD) over a week ago, but C'n'Q never worked with it with my 3200+ Venice chip.
I did get C'n'Q to work with both 1.9b5 and 1.9b6 beta BIOS's but went back to 1.8 (official) for my peace of mind.  Is this driver different to the one at AMD?  Modified in anyway?
I would really like to get C'n'Q to work with approved drivers and not betas.
