Cool'n'Quiet affecting performance?

Hello,
I noted something in my K9A2 Platinum and AMD Phenom 9950.
First of all I had it oced to 2.7 (x13.5) and Cool'n'Quiet enabled.
Well, due to a bug in Everest 5.02 sensor driver, I can't read correctly the CPU clock because this program show even speed like 700 MHz when I'm doing heavy task. As I thought it was impossible, I ran CPU-Z and this showed the correct values (1300 MHz when idle and 2700 when doing heavy tasks).
The issue is the following: Today I was converting an .avi video to DVD using a program that is optimized to use only two cores. The strange thing I noted is that processor was at 1300 MHz and only few times it changed to 2700 MHz. However voltage was at 1.3 all the time until conversion finished. Of course that if I disable CnQ or I choose another energy plan, speed is 2700 even when idle.
This program (ConvertxtoDVD) used about 50% of my processor.
Does CnQ affect performance? I thought that a conversion like that is a heavy task and it can benefit from 2700 MHz instead 1300 MHz, or CnQ is smart enough to know when an app. benefit or not from a higher speed?
Thanks!
I want to say than one of the better thing of MSI is its forum

Thanks for the suggestion.
Based on the results I can confirm that CnQ affect performance, quite disappointing. I don't know the difference between the CnQ of Athlon 64 X2 vs. Phenom, but in Athlon the processor change speed to its maximum  immediately when I started doing heavy tasks instead of Phenom changing its speed to max only when 4 cores are being used and only some times when using less than 4 cores.
Here're results:
With CnQ ENABLED:
CPU Score   3347
CPU1 - Red Valley   1,160 FPS      CPU Tests
CPU2 - Red Valley   1,545 FPS      CPU Tests
With CnQ DISABLED:
CPU Score   3622
CPU1 - Red Valley   1,209 FPS      CPU Tests
CPU2 - Red Valley   1,737 FPS      CPU Tests
What do you think? Is a mobo, CPU problem or a performance hit like this is normal?

On some programs you will get a performance hit with Cool & Quiet enabled.  Run 3DMark06 with it on and then with it off and you will see the performance hit.  Most programs you will never notice.

  • Does frequent garbage collection affect performance

    Hi,
I have written code in a filter for all the servlets in the application.
Depending on the servlet requested I set the objects to null after
    it has finished its work.
My question is that since the filter will be executed each time a
servlet is requested, could it result in affecting performance ?

The battery is known to 'degrade' when reaching excessive temperatures. Apple recommends keeping the temperature between to 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
I used to game heavily on my phone which would get hot. After a year, I noticed that I had to fully charge my phone 3 times a day in order to make it through a day with light usage. Also, I noticed that the phone would die when the battery percentage display would be at all sorts of numbers, 37%, 43%, 7%, and sometimes stay on 1% for 5 minutes while running a processor-intensive game.
After taking my phone to the Apple store for a diagnostic, Apple confirmed issues with the battery. There's no way to know if having my phone stay hot for long periods of time damaged the battery or if I just had a defective battery.
My recommendation is if you know you will be gaming heavily to take the case (if you have one) off your phone and to be in a cool environment to try to keep the phone from getting too hot.
Your battery failed not because of temperature, but you used it up. The battery is spec'd for 400 full charge/discharge cycles. If you fully drain the battery every day that's about 14 months. If you drain it more than once a day that's less time. The phone has a thermal protection circuit that will shut it down if it gets hot enough to damage anything. And actually Lithium batteries do not degrade at higher temperatures. Electric cars and plugin hybrids use the same battery technology (like the Tesla, Chevy Volt, Prius Plugin, Nissan Leaf) and they run much hotter than iPhones. And last 10 years.

  • Cool and Quiet problem on K8N Neo2 Platinum v1.3 bios

    Hello
I have a problem with the Cool and Quiet feature on the K8N Neo2 Platinum (v1.3 bios).
As soon and I boot the Core Center v1.7.0.0 will instantly overclock my A64 3500+ CPU to 3000+ Mhz.  Of course this reboots my PC.
I have Cool and Quiet enabled in the bios, Automatic overclocking disabled in the bios and the Core Center softwares overclocking is (well it was) disabled?  How can I install it or get it to stop overclocking the system.
I want to run the Core Center to enable the Cool and Quiet fan controlling stuff.
    Thanks

Strange that Corecenter would overclock your cpu to 3ghz. It's known to be unreliable software, but not that unreliable.
Are you running a stock 3500+, or are you overclocking the HTT/FSB beyond 200?
Previous posted was right about cool and quiet software. You don't need corecenter to run it. Just stay away from corecenter and even uninstall it
Cool and quiet software (a device driver that you download from AMD, or that comes pre-installed with XP SP2) simply works as follows. It introduces the notion of several p-states (processor states) that it switches between based on its reading of cpu load. A p-state is a pairing of cpu voltage and cpu multiplier.  On my 3200+ newcastle, the p-states are:
    1.5V, 11x
    1.4V, 10x
    1.3V, 9x
    1.1V, 5x
Your 3500+ might be similar. Anyway, just run cpu-z instead of corecenter to watch your cpu speed changing on the fly.
As far as fan speeds go: the cool and quiet driver doesn't affect fan speeds.  That means to get the "quiet" part of "cool and quiet" you need either
    (a) a fan that has a temperature sensor and which automatically changes its speed based on that, or
    (b) just use the motherboard BIOS setting to do the same via bios software.
    (c) use speedfan to do the same via windows software.
I myself prefer (b) but it depends on the bios accurately reporting temperature, which can vary wildly between bios releases (e.g. newcastles didn't start getting accurate temp reports until bios 1.4).

  • AMD Athlon 64 Cool and Quiet - not working

    Hello,
everything is now working on my Arch workstation, except c'n'q.
First, I searched the forum for information and tried quite a lot of things, yet it is not working.
    The following modules are loaded:
    * powernow-k8
    * cpufreq_ondemand
    As for the daemons:
    * acpid
    * cpufreqd
The CPU is always up running at full speed. In other distros I was used to daemons like powernowd who did the frequency scaling, and so I went on and pacman'ed powernowd (pkgbuild), yet it does not work. Of course c'n'q is enabled in BIOS. Btw, I also tried athcool.
I'd be glad for any help.

  • Phenom II x3 720 BE doesn`t run Cool`n Quiet

Hello. Almost a week running my new x3 720 and seems to be OK. Temps are 19ºC on boot, 31-32ªC idle and 37-39º running Photoshop CS3 with some heavy image files, 80-120Mb. Just for try, I did overclocked it up to 3.2 Ghz (200x16 and 1.47V) and temperature went up to 46-47ºC. ¿Is this normally? I did it slowly, mounting x0.5, 14.5/15/15.5/16 and rebooting every step. First I changed voltage to 1.5V, when I reached the3.2 Ghz I went down a little, at 1.47. Stable and running great. However, I don`t think 46ºC are better than 32ºC, so I get back to its original x14 and 32ºC.
Also, just for try, I boot and enabled the Cool`n Quiet. Never did it before with the others Athlon x64 Dual Core, I never saw what`s the difference. Now, my K9N2 sli platinum can`t activate this function. I tyred several times, enableling and rebooting and nothing. Seems the same mobo is deactivating this function on the reboot.
    What`s this?

Hello. I`m running Win7 x86. Really, that`s only curiosity, isn`t my intention to use that feature. I only try to see if everything is running normally. May be that: on Control Panel/Energy options I activated High Efficiency. Could be.

    Windows XP + SP1
I've upgraded the BIOS to 1.1 and activated the cool n quiet mode. I've also downloaded the AMD driver (1.1.0.0) and installed that.
The CPU still runs at full speed. Have I missed something, or is it just pot luck whether this works or not?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Neil Urwin.

I just flashed to 1.2 and stilll no CnQ.
From other  posts I'm wondering if the problem is related to one or both of:
Win2K + Athlon 64 3000+.  That's what I have and others with trouble seem to
have the same. I tried reloading the AMD drivers, removing CoreCenter
and  the only thing that works ever is the fan speed control. I never get the
extra folder in power options under control panel.  Maybe since the Win2K
AMD driver is so old it doesnt detect the cPU properly and therfore doesnt start up?
I may still switch the CPU fan over to the Zalman CuAl since the retail AMD fan has a loud hum at 2500-3000RPM. But the reduced wattage and heat is worth trying to get if possible.
I already ordered more RAM and WinXP Pro from newegg so I guess I can see
if its the OS level/AMD drivers also fix the problem.
Overall I'm happy with the board. Its stable under Linux (RH 9.0) and Win2K under prime95 tests for hours. Haven't had time to try day long tests. Certainly stable under hours of BF1942.
For those of you hyper about RAM settings checkout the Ace' s hardware test.
I'm a bit suprised that it matters so little for the Athlon 64 but it's nice to hear.
Though I'm always amazed at people paying huge sums for better RAM for meager performance improvements- especially on real world programs and games.
    http://www.aceshardware.com/read.jsp?id=60000306
AMD64 versions of RH Fedora Yarrow test failed to detect I had a graphics card.
Wierd since /proc seems fine.  Anyone have a favorite AMD64 linux distro that works well installed from CDROM or ftp?  I may just wait- little to gain at the moment suffering through beta quality software/OS.

  • Is Cool 'n Quiet stable?

    I run a K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025) with 1.4 bios, 3800+ NewCastle CPU and Kingston HyperX 400MHz memory.
The setup works like a charm, but when I enable "Cool 'n Quiet" it seems to cause lock-ups and reboots.
The system is NOT overclocked, everything is set to AUTO in BIOS, except for memory which has been set to a bit slower settings than SPD reports.
When I have Core Center open on screen to watch what Cool 'n Quiet does, it seems like most of the time it reports 200MHz x 5.0 at idle, but when I start up an application, it can peak to 380MHz x 12 ?
Neither memory nor CPU should be able to handle that kind of FSB clock, so is it a system bug that the clock peaks at way above 200MHz?  I really don't DARE to use "Cool 'n Quiet" for that reason, I need a stable system that doesn't hang or reboot in the middle of working.
    Later,
    Anders.

    Andres,
I'm not getting the BSODs but the fluctuations do have me concerned. This thread is interesting. Blue screen caused by Vcore flucuations?
Raising the Vcore from 1.50 to 1.525 or 1.55 does seem to help stabilize my system but the CPU temp goes up. I've got a Thermalright XP-90 on the way so heat shouldn't be a problem.
    ===============================================
    What I've found so far...
Cool & Quiet disabled in the BIOS.
    Start CoreCenter running.
    Start Speedfan running.
    Start WCPUCLK
Put a full load on the CPU. (seti@home)
Just moving the mouse around causes a few alarming fluctuations seen in CoreCenter.
WCPUCLK doesn't register the fluctuations but I'm not getting BSODs.
    1) Open CC. Click on CoreCenter , the program title button.
    2) Click User
    3) Set the fans on high
    4) Click Apply.
Now the Vcore and FSB stabilize.
It appears that C & Q is turned off.
    ===============================================
It looks like what the other guys have been saying...Don't use CoreCenter except as a reference to help set up other programs like MBM and SpeedFan. Hmmm...RightMarks RM clock also sounds interesting.
Having a quieter system with Cool & Quiet turned on in the BIOS is nice. I'll have to do more testing to see if its stable. If C & Q is still causing instability after raising the CPU VID to 1.525 in the BIOS...I'll leave it off...Cie La Vie.

  • Cool'n'Quiet not working like it should!

Well, I decided to try Cool'n'Quiet to see how much cooler and quieter my system would get. So I enabled it in BIOS and set Windows power management to Minimal, and watched the clock speed and voltage go down as the CPU load went down.
It stopped at about 1.3v and 1800 Mhz. It won't go any further! My friend practically has the same setup except he uses a 3000+ ClawHammer, and his clock speed and voltage decreases much more than mine. I've read that the clock speed should hit 1000 Mhz.
To answer some possible questions, yes, I have installed the latest AMD processor driver and yes, the CPU load is under 10% when I'm checking.
    Thanks in advance!

If you install the latest beta BIOS 1.2B12, you will see that CnQ can drop the multiplier down to 5.   But some people have seen instability with that BIOS.  I have not.

  • How to disable Cool N Quiet driver when it isnt in the bios or registry for Roxio game capture?

    1. HP G60-120 US Notebook PC
    2. Windows 7 32-bit
    3. No error messages
    4. No changes before issue occured.
I was told by Roxio (company of the capture card I bought to record gameplay on my Xbox) to call HP and get my Cool N Quiet driver disabled after I updated my other drivers and still had problems with my capture card. Can somebody tell me where to find it other than in the registry and bios because it is NOT in there and I have looked already more than 5 times or if you know where I can get it remotely disabled. HP cannot remotely disable it because I just talked to them and they don't have the power to do that.

No, Corecenter is almost useless and is NOT needed to "activate" Cool n Quiet.  The best it can do is tell you fan speed and temps, and even that is questionable.  It will also tell you clock speed but you can get that from right clicking "My Computer" choose Properties, go to General tab, note mhz displayed there.  If it is about half of full clock speed for your CPU, then CnQ is working right.  If it shows full clock speed, then CoolnQuiet is NOT working and you need to re-read Mr. Woo's original post which gives details about how to enable it.
Next, about fan speed.  You have to understand that CnQ does not have anything to do with fan speed directly. Unless you have fan speed control disabled in BIOS, then your fan is going to control as you described whether you have CnQ enabled or not. In BIOS, in the H/W Monitor section, there is a place to enable or disable fan speed control - it's called CPU Smart Temperature Monitor or something like that.
As long as it is enabled and your fan is compatible and hooked up right, the fan will ramp up and down to control temperature. This is independent of CnQ.  And it is independent of Corecenter.  Disable CnQ and shutdown CoreCenter, the mobo still controls fan speed.

  • AMD cool n quiet

Can I get some BIOS with AMD Cool n Quiet option enabled?
I get irritate when my A8 5550m cant get higher than 2.1GHz when the CPU can handle even 3.1GHz. I can fix this with restarting only, and it get back to 2.1GHz when I power on my laptop
    G405s-7577 users. Thanks.
nb. Sorry for my bad english

64 bit I hope. Go into the device manager and look for the processor. Right click on the processor and choose properties then driver, then driver details. It should say amd processor rather than generic processor. The driver name should have amd in it (amdk8.sys) and not just processor.sys or something generic. For mobile processors the correct name is PowerNow! not Cool 'n Quiet although I cannot recall if the zv5000z actually uses a mobile processor or a desktop processor. I believe it is mobile.

  • Does daisy-chaining a Belkin Mac-compatible hub affect performance?

I've had a 7-port Belkin hub plugged into my 13" Macbook and before that a 15" Powerbook for several years and have been pretty satisfied with it. I'd like to get a new one and connect it to the original (or vice-versa). Does anyone know if doing that would affect performance of any kind? (Upload times, wireless mouse interference, etc.?) Belkin doesn't seem to have anyone who knows much--the rep I talked to didn't even know Belkin made a hub that works with Mac.
Thanks for any information anyone has.

That makes sense. My old hub is 2.0, so it should work with the new one I want, which is also 2.0.
I don't know how much power I might ever be using at one time. have a wired keyboard and wireless or USB mice, and at times I probably download something into my printer buffer while at the same time backing up to an external hard drive or flash stick. But I don't think I'd ever be doing more than that, and the present 7-port hub seems to have no problem handling jobs requiring 4 ports at once.
I really just wanted the second hub because the present one is at the back of the desk behind the dictionary (cord is too short to reach the front!), and I'm tired of trying to insert devices into the USB ports without knocking the dictionary off its stand. I figured that plugging a second 7-port hub into the first one would allow me to have a hub at the front of the desk and give me a few extra ports as a bonus. If you have a better idea, I'd be happy to hear it! Meanwhile, thanks so much for the information, and the fast response.

  • Lockups caused by Cool and Quiet?

Since a few months, I have a MSI K8T Neo2 FIR motherboard with an Athlon64 3200+ (Venice) CPU, equipped with 2x512 Mb dual channel memory. No overclocking or any non-standard BIOS-settings; BIOS version 9.1. The system works great, but for one thing: I had frequent lockups...
After some time, I started noticing that my lockups occurred only when the system (running Gentoo Linux) was not doing very much (idle, or only doing some browsing with Firefox). Because of that, I started suspecting that my Cool and Quiet-setup had something to do with it: the lockups occurred when my system was running at 1000 MHz, never when running at 2000 MHz. Since I turned off Cool and Quiet (in the Linux kernel, I didn't touch the BIOS-settings) a week ago, I haven't had a single lockup, even though I've kept my computer running 24 hours a day mostly. So I guess my guess was right.
Can anyone explain what exactly is happening? Why is my system less stable when in 1000 MHz than in 2000 MHz? Can I do something to make the 1000 MHz-mode stable and return to running Cool and Quiet?

    hi,
i have the same problem with the same chipset. (even if its another mb)
your post has been a big hint because after my lockups occured i tried to reproduce them with system/cpu torture tests but have not been succsessful. after that i declared that my system has been miraculously cured and went back to normal (i.e. mostly idle) usage and. bang, lockups again. so i disabled cool'n quiet for now and will see if that helps.

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS and AMD's Cool'n'Quiet = Incompatib

Hello! Is anyone using these two combines on their machines? If so, then do you have any problems like crashes, blue screens, etc. especially after your computer speeds up overnight of idleness/long slow downs? I seem to have them in Windows XP Pro. SP2 with all updates, latest non-beta Audigy 2 ZS driver, etc. No problems if I disable AMD's Cool'n'Quiet in CMOS. Thank you in advance.

Just for kicks, I decided to install this card on a Dell that I happen to have around.. the specs are above and beyond the configuration of my regular computer (whose specs are above and beyond the specs listed for the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum).. and I am unhappy to report that the same freezing problems occur. I am still unable to use any web update features for ANY of my software, and I am still unable to record in 24 bit audio.
