Cool n Quiet and core centre question

just a quick question
if i dont have cool and quiet enabled in the bios and i start core centre it reports my Mhz as 2400 ( i have the XP 64 3700 chip )
but if i enable cool n quiet in the bios and then start core center it reporst the MHz as 1000
and i was just curious why ........ faintly paranoid that my chip isnt running to spec
thanks if you can help and no probs if you cant

so with cool and quiet enabled my chip is running at half its rated spec 1000mhz instead of 2400mhz
would this be why DOOM detected my pc and set all detail to low even though i have an x800 xp 64 3700 and a gig of ram .... DOOM basically underspecced my processor
thats a bit mad as father dougal would say
ok last question ... with cool and quiet off the processor is reporting at 45 degrees so i would imagine under load ( saY a game of doom 3 ) it would hit 50+ .... whats the max safe temp for these chips 65 degrees ???

  • K8T Neo, Cool'N'Quiet and Core Center

    Hello,
I have the impression that the "Quiet" part of the CnQ feature (CPU fan rpm control) only works if activated through Core Center.
I have to open this SW, click on Core Center bmp and push apply to lower the rmp of the CPU fan (from 3300 to 2600 rpm).
I have installed K8 driver and set the appropriate power saving mode via Windows XP control panel.
    Mobo BIOS is 1.8.
Do you know other means to make it work without having to go through Core Center ?
Anyone got it working without installing Core Center ?
Thanks in advance for your help !!

I think you need Core Center.

  • Core Centre Question

I have just updated both of my PC's to the latest 3.9 BIOS and also the latest edition of core centre (2.0.1.2), now in the PC that my other half uses, which is the same spec as mine (only way to build mine without getting major grief  ) except that she has Crucial XMS PC3200 memory, 2GB 4x512MB in matched pairs, I've now noticed that it runs at DDR400, as before I could only get it to run at DDR333. Thats running at stock settings in the BIOS, so a nice Improvment there.
On my own PC, I've noticed that I'm able to get my own memory to run higher than before, and also the CPU runs a lot higher, (changing FSB only) another nice improvment!
At the moment, mine is running at 2,53 GHz rock stable for the last few days 24/7 with the temp never exceeding 36c. The only thing that I've noticed is with core centre, which now says that it does not support my M/Board! (wind the CPU back down to say 222 Bus speed then it works fine, which is the 11% overclock in core centre - and no before you ask, my settings were done in BIOS, not via core centre utility)
I'm not really complaining, dont get me wrong I think the improvment to the BIOS is a positive move. I just wonder if anyone else has noticed the problem with Core Centre and CPU overclock speeds.

I agree, i've done mine the manual way also, I just used Core Centre as an easy way to monitor my temps and to adjust my cpu fan speed. my question was why overclocking the CPU caused Core Centre to report that it did not support my motherboard, and fail to load, but would load at moderate overclocks supported by Core Centre itself. Its not the end of the world type of thing, just me being curious thats all

  • Crackling Issues with AMD Cool'n'Quiet and Intel SpeedS

After enabling AMD Cool'n'Quiet on my Vista 64 computer ([url="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=2093">see this thread[/url]), I noticed that I had crackling in my audio from my Creative X-Fi. I put my Minimum Processor State back to 00%, and the crackling is gone. With both Minimum and Maximum Processor State on 00%, I have no crackling issues. I haven't tested Intel SpeedStep, but I would imagine that will also cause this problem. Can anyone verify this?Message Edited by dypsis on 03-25-200706:32 PM

I am running MSI K8N Neo Platinum/SLI 64FX? with 4gbram?I have never really used the cool n quiet utility becasue it always seemed to make the motherboard fans whine somewhat, for this purpose I enabled and disabled cool n quiet several times, and I honestly didnt hear any difference in sound, albeit the fan whinning was there. I dont know if this is conected or not, its possible cool N quiet creates other noise as well. I never did like the util. But, it might stand to reason that if the utility was creating voltage or signal variations it could cause the rice krispies syndrome so many people have been talking about. Have to get some more feedback on this issue.

  • Bios 1.6 and Core Centre Problems!

    Hi MSI Buddies!
I have an 875p Neo mobo,
I had problems before where my mobo wouldn't cold boot.  I got a replacement board (with bios 1.20) which works perfectly.
I sucessfully upgraded to bios 1.60 last night and the version of corecentre kept stopping my CPU fan !!!!  Arrrrggggghhhhh!  Can't MSI get anything right (even 6th time round !!!)
I upgraded to 1.0.5.3 version of CoreCentre which fixed the CPU Fan stopping but, the FSB defaults to 203 instead of 200. Everytime i tried to put it back to 200 the PC completely froze !!!!  I then ran live update and got the very latest Core Centre which still sets FSB to 203 but i can adjust it without it freezing.  But it resets to 203 after a reboot! ANY IDEAS????
The CPU temp stays between 41c and 59c.  Is this going to affect my CPU or cause any problems????
Also in the bios, Performance is set to FAST (this was by default).
Is there anyway i can re-flash back to 1.20 bios????
    PLEASE PLEASE HELP
    T Hatley.

Use Corecenter solely for checking speeds/temps.
There were lots of problems with this program so it might still behave weird sometimes. Also take into account you're directly over/under/clocking the system while it's running, you can never predict it's stability.
The 203 FSB is directly caused by the setting FAST in the bios. Those settings regulate different levels of overclocking. Try setting it to slow and tell me what corecenter says the FSB is then?

  • [Athlon64] Cool n Quiet and AMD driver problem...

I hate to be the one to start another cool and quiet thread, but this is a problem I can't figure out. I have been running cool and quiet on my NEO Athlon 64 motherboard for over a year now, and it has worked perfectly, until today. I re-installed windows, because it was giving me problems, thanks to one too many virus and spyware attacks over the past year. Anyway, I installed windows, installed service pack 1, and all the assorted drivers for my hardware. I downloaded the latest AMD cpu driver and installed it. I have my power option set to minimal. I have everything just as it was, but the cool and quiet never kicks in. I am monitoring it with the Cool and Quiet panel, and it just sets at 2000 mhz. Cool and Quiet is turned on in the bios, and so is acpi. Windows xp reports having ACPI installed. I'm stumped. Is the fact I am using SP1 and have not upgraded to SP2 have anything to do with this? I notice the latest AMD cpu driver mentions it is for winxp SP2. I am avoiding SP2 because it has an issue with software that I use on my network. If it's because of SP2, is there a site I could download the older AMD cpu drivers from, to get this thing working? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Hello dude!
Well I remember to be in the same case, but when I reinstalled the WinXP, it comes with the SP2 integrated and I just active the Cool n Quiet installing the AMD Power Monitor lasted version and set se PM to Minimal, and it works perfectly, And about your problem with the WinXPSP2 Firewall you just have to unmark the LAN protection from the Firewall settings and thats all...
    Enjoy the Life, Enjoy AMD...

  • CoreCenter, Cool 'n' Quiet and Idle Speed...

I just got my machine up and running yesterday and have been playing with CoreCenter and Cool N' Quiet.
When I run idle, I run idle at 1000Mhz and roughly 1.07V.  Is that normal?  I seem to remember seeing that most of them are running idle at 800Mhz.  At first with the 1.3 BIOS I was only getting down to 1600Mhz, but with the upgrade to the 1.4 BIOS upon reboot it was clocked at 1000Mhz (200 X 5).

Some even go down to 800MHz....
And yes it's normal everything should drop, at a point even the CPU-fan could stop spinning....

  • Again: Cool`n Quiet and K8m Neo-V

Working on a new computer for my wife. She wants her new computer to be quiet and powerful (no gaming), so i bought MSI K8M Neo-V and athlon 64 2800+. I have two problems now:
1 I had the same problem as described in an earlier post, it would not post after enabeling cool`n quiet. A bios upgrade fixed that. But: The fan speed does not go down ! Win Xp tells me the cpu is running at 990mhz, but the fan is still going at over 3000rpm. This must be wrong?
2 I bought 256 Mb ram (TwinMos PC3200). But the motherboard tells me its only 196 Mb   Win Xp says its 192 Mb of ram... Is this a motherboard problem or faulty ram? Didn`t help putting the ram in the DIMM2-socket. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, great forum

Thanks bosskiller, great link to the cool`n quiet FAQ. I understand now, that its up to the mobo-producer to give us a way to adjust fan speed. As far as I have found out, MSI have not given us this important possibility yet. The newest bios (ver. 3.2) does not adjust fan speed automatically, and there is no way to do it manually.
The newest version of CoreCenter from MSI does not support this mobo yet (I think)(it does not controll the fan, but it gives you the rpm). New versions of the bios and/or CoreCenter can fix this, I hope. Otherwise we must buy technical regulators like Zalman Fan Mate 1.
About Ram: I think bosskiller is right about the shared memory, the VGA part occupies 64 mb ram. CPU-Z reports the ram-module as 256 mb. The os only gets 192 mb.
I bought only 256 mb ram, TwinMos PC 3200, single banks I think. I was planning on using my old windows millennium, and save some money on both os and ram.
The ram is running 400 mhz, no problem there.
I use Zalman ST-300BLP power supply. 300w, 15A for the 12V. I dont think the power supply gives me any problems. I have used it with my P4-system before, no problems there either.
(I use thermaltake fanless power supply with the P4 now, and its great  )
The athlon64 system looks very quick, if MSI solves the fan speed issue, this system is going to be great!

  • Cool 'n Quiet and Gaming?

I installed the required AMD Processor driver and set the XP power setting to minimal power usage and Cool 'n Quiet immediately kicked in after a reboot.  My CPU now runs at a steady 1000MHz and about 5-7C cooler
Is there any way to configure this such that it doesn't kick in until after a certain period of low CPU activity?  While playing FarCry I noticed quite a bit of sluggishness and lag with this enabled.  It seems that Cool 'n Quiet works TOO well because the CPU actually bogs down while it should be mostly pinned at 2GHz
It's easy to fix by putting the power setting back to Desktop where the CPU always runs at 2GHz but I like the idea of giving the CPU a breather and cool-down when I walk away from the machine and am only doing P2P sharing or whatever.
    Thanks!
    John

I play battlefield vietnam.  After I installed the driver and started using cool and quiet I noticed a big drop in temps.  MHZ drop to 800 at idle. Really quite cool like 38`.  Very impressive.
I havn't noticed any degradation in my game play.  One thing I have done....just to "check" to see what my cpu was doing while running my game:
During gameplay I can hit ALT-TAB.  Then I goto start, control panel, system and see how many mhz my system is cranking.  It always shows 2000 for me, as it should while running and intense game.  Then i can just click on the bfvietnam bar on the taskbar to jump back into my game where I left off.

  • Problems with Cool N Quiet and MSI Live Update

    Hi
I have had my K8T NEO FISR2 motherboard for a year and  generally I have been very happy with it. However, I have just installed Full Spectrum Warrior (about 3 weeks ago ) and Nortons Internet Suite 2005 and both installations resulted in the same error message when I boot up.
The error message is that MSI Live Update isn't started up, and also that Cool N quite is not supported on my motherboard which is obviously rubbish.
I have done a complete re-install of the Live Update and Cool N quite and that fixes it, and then it seems to come back a day later.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thankyou for your help

I stopped using the MSI software completely.  Also got lots of troubles with it.  MSi Live Update for example stops the audio drivers working while checking their revision and so on, so my advice is to use it only if needed once in a while and not loading it together with Windows.

  • Cool´n´Quiet and unstable Windows XP

K8T Neo with latest 2.0 bios, 3000+, Antec TruePower 380, R9600Pro, 2*Twinmos (PSC) 512M DDR400. Works like a charm, until installing AMD CnQ driver (from AMD site) and enabling CnQ. Causes applicaton crashes every 5 minutes and eventually BSOD in 10-15 minutes. So lowering the voltage and clock makes the MB unstable, but without CnQ the system is perfectly stable.
I have read of many similar problems with many different Mobos, but have not found anyone who would have found a solution for this. Any ideas?

Well, my system is kinda similar to yours and I have no problems with c'n'q. I am using Bios 1.90, and an earlier CPU driver.
Are you using XP SP1 or SP2? Unfortunately I can't suggest any solutions, just provide a data point of a working config...

  • Core Center & Cool n Quiet etc...

    Hi
I have a MSI K8N SLI-F & a AMD 4200 X2 Dual Core Toledo.  I was wondering if anyone knows exactly how Cool n Quiet and Core Centre work.  I have both installed, the AMD Driver, enabled in BIOS, set to Minimal Power setting and it seems to work fine.  The voltages and multipliers become lower when I aint doing much and the go up when I am & my CPU stays between 20-50c.
Although I've noticed the CPU fan speed cranks up to a high speed on boot right through until Windows has loaded and Core Centre pops up in the Tray then I close Core Centre & have noticed it never really changes from 1350-1400 rpm (Yes it's set to the Auto: Cool n Quiet mode in Core Centre).  I have a CNPS7700-AlCu Zalman cooler.  Anyone know if / when Core Centre / Cool n Quiet will increase the fan speed?  Does it need to be running in the Tray? is the threshold more than 50c before an increase?   As it seems to stay at 1350-1400rpm regardless of my CPU being at 25c through to 50c.  It's plugged into the motherboard directly.
    Thanks
    Matt

There are 3 "switches" that need to be "on" for cnq to work
    1) bios must turn it on
    2) processor driver must be installed
    3) [windows xp] "minimal power management" must be selected in control panel.
Turn any of these off (3 being the easiest to do at runtime of course) and it should turn off cnq. Use cpu-z to verify; corecenter has been known to dance around in its ghz readings (especially in its FSB/HTT, which seems to jump for no particular reason from time to time, then goes back down to 200 a moment later)
Anyway, use cpu-z as a more reliable measurement...

  • MSI Core Centre ANNOYING!!!!!

Ok i recently upgraded the cooling on my amd 64 3700 sandiego be cause i found that the stock heatsink and fan sucked. so i purchased a Gigabyte G-Power pro. This is a great cooler and cools the cpu much better however i have found that since i have imstalled it MSI Core Centre keeps popping up from the system tray and making teh alarm noise, now i don't know why it does this because all the temps voltages and speeds are fine, and no overclocking has been done, it isn't even highlighting the bit thats supposed to be causing the problem, and the alarm will stop after a few seconds. but it's really annoying when playing a game and your whole game mnimizes and core centre pops up      i have installed the latest version too. pls help

I don't use corecenter while gaming, but maybe you can edit the HW.ini file in "C:\Program Files\MSI\Core Center"
It lists all the settings for fan speed limits etc. , maybe your new fan drops below the minimum setting which is at 1000 by default.
Or some other setting that influences this.
Have you btw speedfan running at the same time?Because when in that program the wrong fan divider is set corecenter also sounds alarm.
I found this when setting a different value for my northbridge fan,my cpu fan dropped to 150 rpm in corecenter, still it maintained the same temperature and ofcourse the fan ran at full speed (3300rpm).

  • Core Centre Alerts - No Fans Installed

Ok, i've had a look around the forums and could see anything regarding this subject. It's doing my head in!
I run an over clocked system, spec is un-important however I am running a full water cooling system through the CPU and GPU. Consequently I don't need a lot in the way of fans, so I have a small fan controlled from the front panel to brush some cold air over the northbridge.
My problem is that when I boot my PC and Core Centre starts up, it immediately maximizes and starts beeping. Eveything is fine as far as settings I promise you, so the only thing it can be doing is warning about fan speeds - because there isn't any!
Has any one worked out how to stop it from doing this?

Just checked BIOS - couldn't see any option to stop monitoring any fans. Any thoughts, 865G Neo2 ?
Thanks for the suggestion on moving the fan. I didn't go into much detail regarding my system, but it was designed for power, but just as important; noise. I only really need the fan over the northbridge when i'm gaming, so I want to leave it on my external control so I can knock it right back when I don't need it.
Something else that i've just noticed is that on my normal partition which I use for most things, I've got a little app running at startup called startup guru. It allows you to alter the timing of the start up group of apps. I have core centre set to start up 5 minutes after bootup and it doesn't give any alerts.
However, in my games partition which has nothing running at all in the way of background apps other than core centre it starts immediately and starts to alert immediately. But even if I kill it off and restart it, it still starts to alert immediately.
I'm going to try startup guru on my games partition and see if it sorts it.
