COOL new Mac OS X Easter egg/Secret/Developer goody

Hey all,
Just wanted to let you know of a new music secret I found in iPhoto. Here is how:
1) Navigate to the Applications folder on your hard drive
2) Control-click on the iPhoto icon to open the action menu
3) Click on "Show Package Contents"
4) In the new Finder window that appears, go into the "Contents" folder
5) In the "Contents" folder, got into the "Resources" folder
6) On your keyboard, type in "mu" fast to highlight the "Music" folder in the "Resources" folder
7) Go into the Music folder
8) Surprise!! In there, you will find 2 MP3 songs, Minuet in G, and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
9) Highlight these two songs
10) Drag them to the Desktop while holding the Option key on the keyboard to copy them (Don't move them, copy them. Don't forget that you are working in iPhoto's roots)
11) Move the songs you just copied onto the desktop into your iTunes libary and enjoy!
Sure, they aren't the best songs you'd expect but it's nice to find things in Mac OS X and they're FREE. This was tested on Mac OS X 10.3.9 and iPhoto version 2.0. I don't know if it will work on other versions os OS X or iPhoto, but you can try. If you do discover that it works on other versions of X, email me at [email protected] (I wnat to feature it on my site, "Happymac Macintosh Support Services, http://happymac.50webs.com)
iMac CRT Summer 2001, 384MB RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, Mac OS 9.2.2 (Classic)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sorry, didn't know. I don't use iPhoto much... But still, it's cool that you can listen to the songs when you're out of iPhoto (not that the songs are good...they stink, just that the guitar solos are good)

Thanks Chris   The phone has been great until this morning.  When using the camera it seemed to shut down, then it was just looping the restart, and finally into recovery   It never rains but pours   Thanks anyway
BTW, the phone has never been jailbroken or anything.  Stock standard

  • I'm a PC user but I want to get a new Mac

Well here is a little of my story.First of all I was one of the early microcomputer users having a HP-67 programmable calculator in 1975.Steve Wozniak had a HP-65(previous model)
and he too was a member of the HP-65 users group before he made the Apple 1.Wozniak also worked at HP in the progammable calculator division.I programmed in Fortran 4 on a I.B.M. 360 mainframe in High School with those ridiculous 80 column Punch Cards.I also designed and built lots of electronic devices like a Class 4 Rhodamine 6G chemical Laser with a 3.6 megawatt Pulsed Powers supply and other fun things like a ultrasonic transmitter and reciever scanner in addition to digital circuits when I was a teenager.I really love ultra high voltage, ultra high amperage nanosecond circuitry and its secret implentations.
Now I missed the Apple 2 era because they came out after I graduated High School.I've had several microcomputers in the 1980's like the HP-75,Timex Sinclair 2068 and the Commodore Amiga.A friend of mine got me back into computers when he taught me MS-DOS on a hand me down used 486 class I.B.M. PS/1(it had Windows 3.1 installed on it)in 1998.Later in 1999 I purchased a Pentium 2 class machine and had an up to date PC for the first time.I had also got into configuring, repairing and selling PC's for some extra pocket change cash.
I built and own several newer PC's like a Athlon 1 Ghz system in Jan 2001 and a 3.2 Ghz Pentium 4 Class machine that I built in 2004.I also have built and own a 1.7 Ghz Celeron system.
Well my friend always cracked jokes about the Macintosh and how useless and impractical it was in addition to the platform not having much software that can run on it.
I saw a old Macintosh Classic in a thrift store and purchased it.I recognized that it was a old machine but was impressed with the Mac OS GUI and how it compared to Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.1 at that time.I also saw how the Macintosh GUI OS came out in 1984 and Windows 1.0 was a complete joke in 1985.Microsoft Windows took until 1995 to nearly copy how the Mac OS worked.I found a lot more Compact Macs in thrift stores and repaired 2 pre 6000 series 1983 logic board original Macintosh's.I found great books about the history of the Macintosh like Insanely Great by Steven Levy and just loved the fantastic history and technology of the Macintosh. Both me and my PC friend watched the Pirates of Silicon Valley(TNT original movie) but I too noticed a lot of the simplification and errors of this short drama.I had a Sept 1977 Scientific American magazine that had a article about the Xerox Alto and PARC written by Alan Kay.So I just love the history about the development of the GUI,the Mouse,Hypertext,Networking,Bitmapping the Mouse and especially the greatest inventor of some of these technologies Douglas Englebart who in December 1969 demonstrated 2 GUI OS based machines with mouse and chorded keyes networked machines 40 miles apart and use Video teleconfrencing at the Augmentation Research Center at the Stanford Research Intstitute under funding by DARPA.
I also purchased some more used Macs like a a Performa 636 a 638 and a Power PC 6500.I also found a shrink wrapped Mac OS 9 in a thrift store for $10.Now I've never owned a new Mac or Apple computer but my Uncle had several Apple 2 machines. When my PC friend critisized the Mac I was intrigued and became a Mac and Apple computer defender and lover.I saw a video of Steve Jobs demonstrating a NeXT Machine and noticed how similar it was to the Mac OSX operating system that I've seen on newer Macs in my local CompUSA.Wow NeXT was truly amazing at that time(Yes I know the WWW was invented on a NeXT Machine.
One thing I've noticed that is a constant hassle with security issues on a PC is the extreme extent to which a Microsoft Operating System PC user has to protect his system from attacks on the Internet. As a PC user I've seriously had to install 5 or 6 VALID(and there are 100's of fake) Anti Spyware programs on a PC to HOPEFULLY

    Nice to hear your story.

  • I am having trouble with my new Mac....Help please

I just got a new Mac G4 from my neighbor, who happens to be older, so the computer is still in great condition. The only problem is, he doesn't remember the login password! So I can start the computer, but I can't actually login. And I've tried to put the Panther reboot disc in and the restart it, but it doesn't do anything. None of the discs will even try to load when I put them in to restart the computer. Its not like the HP computer I have, whereas if I put the reboot disc in it actually works.
This is my first Mac computer and I'm not really familiar with them that much, so if some one could point me in the right direction, other than taking it to an actual retailer and having to pay them a bundle of money to fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Old Logic + a new Mac = can't open old projects anymore. De/re-install?

    Hi everybody,
maybe someone can advise me with this problem:
I bought a new Mac recently, did install a fresh OSX 10.5 and then used migration assistant to transfer my old user account from my old Mac (10.4), incl. all files. It did take a night, but it worked - or so I thought. Actually all applications work as they should, except for Logic. I had to re-authorize a few plug-ins, but then all seemed to be cool. I can open a new project, record audio, midi, add plug-ins, all cool. But I ended up with 3 problems, which are really annoying:
    1) EXS24 couldn't find most of the samples anymore. Most, not all. I have 4 internal HDs, one for the system, one for audio recordings, one for samples, one for "other stuff". 2 of these disks came from the old Mac, 2 new ones, content copied from old Mac. In the EXS prefs I set "search for samples" to "all volumes", but it still didn't work perfectly. Finally I bought EXSManager Pro and now it seems to work again. I didn't try ALL samples yet, but the +/- 20 EXS instruments I tried, did load all samples.
    2) Space Designer doesn't load impulse responses for the presets anymore. They're there and at the right place. I can load SD and import an existing impulse file, no problem. But the presets don't find the required files anymore.
    3) Now - and this is the worst one - I can't open old projects anymore. I just can't. It starts loading, I see the rainbow thing (don't know the right word), it turns black & white and that's it. You can watch this forever and nothing happens.
    Regarding all 3 issues:
I don't get any error messages. Logic doesn't crash, I can't click 'apple-.' to stop loading/searching. It just doesn't open the file. I had a coffee, a pizza, I let it try for 2 hrs+, but neither did it load a SD preset or an old song file. All I can do is manually quit Logic.
But when I open Logic with the CTRL-button down and click "no" to core audio I can open all songs. Of course I can not hear a tone then, but it's all there. Opening a song takes 3 secs then. I tried to safe a song then with a different name, re-started Logic with core audio but same result. It get's "stuck".
Of course I checked user permissions and all the usual trouble shooting clicks, but still Logic has a mind of it's own. I installed a 2nd user with admin rights, though still the same, plus all the 3rd party plug-ins refusing to work.
Now I was thinking, should I de-install Logic and re-install from the original CDs maybe. And if so, is there anything special I have to take care of? Like manually removing any prefs or cache files?
Or completely re-install the whole Mac? (pleeease no....)...
If anybody has any idea, it'd be highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance and for the energy to read my little novel here,
    cheers,
    Joern

Ok, either my question was too long or nobody seems to have an answer. Sad, either way
Here's something I found out in the meantime, maybe this is interesting for somebody or maybe - problem's not totally solved - enough info for any of you to give me further advice.
When I start Logic Core Audio driver de-activated, I can open old songs. Then I save them in a new folder with all audio files and a new name. And I remove all EXS24 instruments as well as the Space Designer. I quit Logic, re-open with Core Audio activated and I can open the song.
Problem no.1: EXS24 instruments don't find the appropriate samples, but EXSMananger Pro did help me with this. Same problem with Space Designer, which doesn't find the impulse responses, connected to a certain preset.
Two questions, every idea would be great!
    - Is there any way to teach Space Designer Presets where to look for impulse respones. I can load IR samples directly and create a new preset, but I can't use my old ones.
    - Is it possible to install Logic from scratch over an existing version? Or how should I de-install everything connected with Logic and then install a fresh version from CD?
    Thank you again,
    Joern

  • I just bought a new mac and need to clear the memory of my old one but i don't have a startup disk.  how do i do this?

I just bought a new mac book pro and need to clear my old mac of it's contents to give it away---  I do not have my startup disk anymore.  How can i completely delete my old mac's memory?

    Erasing your drive:
Dragging the files to the Trash removes the references to them from the Directory. As has always been the tradition, the data blocks that held the actual data are not over-written, they are merely added to the free list for later re-use. Their original contents are still present.
Disk Utility "Erase" or "Partition" of a drive (which finishes in under a minute) also does not over-write the data blocks, but merely creates a new, empty directory.
To clear the data that may still be present (admittedly in a disorganized mess of unlinked blocks) you need to overwrite the data. Use the erase tab, then choose "Security Erase" Options, and overwrite once with Zeroes. This process can take several hours as it is -- if you insist on multiple passes, it can take days to complete, with little additional protection. Multiple passes is unnecessary unless your drive held Military Secrets.
When you have erased, be sure to install some version of Mac OS X -- a Mac with no obvious Operating software may be dead, and  is much more likely to quickly become landfill.

  • Transfer iMovie '09 Files to a New Mac Running iMovie '11

    I need transfer/upgrade advice.
I have an old Mac running iMovie '09 (v8.0.6) with iMovie Events stored on an external (Firewire) drive.  I have not created any real iMovie Projects yet ("one of these days, I'm gonna I'm gonna make those vaction videos really shine...").
I also have a new Mac, and the App store upgraded it to iMovie '11 (v9.0.4).  Have not launched iMovie '11 on the new Mac yet.
From reading some posts in these forums, I realize the transfer of iMovie "content?" from one Mac to another is not necessarily straightforward.  Can someone give me step-by-step directions (or point me to a thread/KB article) that does.
    Any help greatly appreceated.

    AppleMan1958-
Thanks, that did it.  Must say I was skeptical with some of the other iMovie file transfer issues I've read about in these forums, but mine was pain-free.
    For others/to reinforce:
Connect external drive containing iMovie events (ensure it mounts normally).
    Start iMovie '11 (v9.0.4).
iMovie '11 (v9.0.4) immediately recognized that the external drive connected to my Mac contained iMovie Events and displayed them in its "Event Library" (lower left).
Minor delay as iMovie '11 added my events and possibly "upgraded" them to work with the new version of iMovie.
I did not have to "point" iMovie at the external drive, or tell it anything.  It just recognized the external drive had iMovie events.  Kinda cool how smooth this went!
Wondering what the transfer process would be if I had existing projects to transfer as well (I did not have any; just wondering aloud).

  • FCP Not Working after Migration to New Mac

OK this is really making me mad. i bought a new mac, and used the cool now migration assistant to bring all my stuff over. apps, docs, all that stuff. and when i try everything works great except Final Cut Express. I open it and it asks for the the serial number, i put in the one i have, and it won't let me click OK. any one know what to do? cause that really makes no sense to me, why can't i use my own apps. all i did was transfer it.

Just did a migration myself. I got a new MacBookPro and did a migration from my MacPro. FCE worked fine without a hitch. I had trouble with DVD Pro in FCP. I reinstalled FCP which fixed DVD Pro but broke Compressor. Looked on the archives on this forum and did the fix:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1060925&tstart=0
When I copied over compressor.app and the associated library files it worked.
The other strange thing was iMovie 08 on the new Mac was then hosed. I did the same trick, copied the .app and Library directory from my working MacPro and all worked fine.

  • Can video cards for the new Mac Pro be installed in the field?

Current Configuration of the new Mac Pro is as follows:
          ACES MacPro Workstation Seat
    Processor
    6-Core/3.5GHz/Xeon E5
    Memory
    32 GB
    Graphics
    2X AMD FirePro D500
    Hard Disk
    1 TB
    Display
    24" LED / HP
    Media Player
    2GB FIPS USB Drive
    Mouse
    Apple Magic Mouse
    Keyboard
    USB
    Ports
    4-USB 3.0;
    6-Thunderbolt
    1- HDMI
    Netwk Interface
    Ethernet/802.11n
    Card Reader
    NIST SP 800 Compliant
My question is can the Graphic Display cards be removed and replaced in the field by an experience Mac Technician?
    Any special tools required?

Now here is the back, showing the heatsink paste still in place, and the thermal pads used to cool the RAM chips to the central cooler:
note that the two cards are not interchangeable -- they have their power lugs on opposite sides. One card has chips to support actual display output to the thunderbolt Busses, the other card has none, but has the custom micro-PCIE slot for the PCIe SSD "stick".
One reason for this design is that to make a leap forward, you would have to water-cool the slots for a traditional form-factor PCIe slot Mac pro. Then do it again to include a second GPU. In my opinion, this model Mac Pro is about conquering the cooling problem of this much CPU and GPU compute-power in one box.
NVIDIA graphics card replacements? maybe eventually, but not at this writing.

  • Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?
        https://discussions.apple.com/message/12586041?tstart=0#12586041
Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?
    Apple?

Resetting User Password in Lion and Mountain Lion
Boot into your Recovery Partition by holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting.
When the Recovery screen appears, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal.
    In Terminal, type:
    resetpassword
...a small app will open and allow you to choose the user for whom you want to change the password. If you are the admin, be certain that you choose your admin user. Type in your new password twice and give yourself a good hint. Click OK (or Done or whatever) and reboot, enjoying the use of your new, hopefully memorable, password.

  • What are your opinion on the new mac pro

I feel while radical its too limiting thereby loosing fuctionality. But I also knw how the iSheeps would follow their iSheperd blindly. There making this kind of thunderbolt for everything the norm. I also know that the PC companies brought this on themselves they failed to innovate followed intel and nvidia to blindly with there xeons and quadro. The 3 major pc makers market professional workstations that you would probaly sell ur kidney to get one we have the z820 while very powerful its just 2 xpensive. Let's take for example the imac is the best bang for d buck most beautiful all in one if hp had used say a normal 3770k and a gtx 680m 4gb dat would have brought the price of the z1 down drastically. Let's say d average joe wants to be an editor, compositor, colorist. if u goole pc workstations hp z820 and dell T7600 would pop up but they are dam so xpensive hp consumer PCs are garbage. If there is onething apple knows the average pro does not want to be bothered with specs. I think the pc industry brought this on themselves. Wat of the smaller custom builder they focused so much on gaming big megatron design like cases with all the talk of FPS is every thing. My only prayer is that asus, msi gigabyte should stand up aganist apple and start releasing sexier designs, unless I fear even adobe is not safe cos most editors would gradually drfit back to FCPX sad wen inferior products triumphs a superior one. Pls drop ur thoughts also ur opnions as editors in your location the general trend. I hate to be locked in a garden where I am told this is what I need. I love choices.

The 2 biggest problems with the new Mac Pro are the complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion and the Proprietary GPU modules. What happens when those Fire Pro cards are EOL and new GPU's are available. Will Apple go to any of the GPU manufacturers and get newer modules manufactured. Considering the applications that are moving to GPU processing, that was really a very bad idea simply because of the Minimum order quantity Apple will have to make to run another module. Apple will not be able to pull from the general video card supply which means they will be solely responsible for any production numbers required to manufacture to begin with. I personally expect this to be a major limitation as time goes on.
The complete reliance on Thunderbolt for expansion really was bad idea and not ready for prime time. TB2 has the total bandwidth of a PCI-E Gen 2 5x. That is the entire pipe available to pump any video output data, high performance storage, I/O devices, and any number of devices available as time goes on especially video cards. Those trying to GPU process through that pipe are going to find that latency is way to much a problem to get that done. If Lightpeak was out and had the bandwidth of PCi-E Gen 2 or Gen 3 16X then I would say great. There is just to small a pipe and to much device moderation at the TB controller to do this now. The major problem that will develop from this later is when Lightpeak is out for the PC and devices start moving there. Where will Apple be with the Mac Pro when it's entire expansion is legacy in 1 to 2 years. As a final note Thunderbolt 2 is just Thunderbolt 1 with 1 bidirectional channel in stead of 2 unidirectional. This is not a major improvement over the original.
The final consideration though not a major problem yet is the limit to 6 Core Xeons. This is likely due to the heat the 8 Core Xeons generate combined with a centralized cooling design. One of the major reasons to get a Dual Xeon is the 8 Core CPU options. Without that then there really is far less reason to get a Dual Xeon over a single 6 core and eventually 8 core workstation. This is a sacrifice that will reveal more later than now.
Considering the Mac Pro is meant to be the flagship platform for Apple's Pro market, there are really way to many limitations on this one to compete with the PC equivalents. There is only so much OSX will add to any system.

  • IMac vs the new Mac Pro for video editing in FCPX?

    Hi.
I am currently using a macbook air for all my editing and rendering of videos in FCPX. The editing process is reasonably smooth when dealing with shorter clips, but when I tried to edit multicam clips, things started to slow down. Also,  the rendering and compression processes are tedious. I am planning to edit and process a much larger number of videos in the next years to come, so I have decided to do a serious upgrade of my system.
For the moment, I am torn between a maxed out iMac 27", which would be the cheapest alternative, and the 6 core Mac Pro or 4 core Mac Pro.
When I look at benchmarks of the new Mac Pro's in Geekbench, the iMac is never very far away in terms of performance.  Does tests like this tell anything about how well the Mac Pro will perform in FCP?   Does the hardware in the Mac Pro have features which makes it superior to the iMac, in other ways than for example the "pure power" of the CPU and GPU?
    Christopher.

FCP X 10.1, Motion 5.1 Updates w/Dual GPU Support (new Mac Pros) (from Thursday)
Apple released Final Cut Pro X 10.1 Thursday with support for Dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro and more.
Long list in the Final Cut Pro X 10.1 Release Notes that also links to info on How to back up important FCP X 10.0.x files before updating. (Today's Apple docs listing also has more related to Final Cut Pro X 10.1.)
Also out today are Compressor 4.1 and Motion 5.1. Full release notes below but here's a clip from the App store Motion 5.1 changes:
Optimized playback and rendering using dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro
FxPlug 3 with custom plug-in interfaces and dual-GPU support
Faster project loading, especially for complex projects
Share directly to YouTube at 4K resolution

Intel Xeon processors are designed to run 24/7 and stay cool and under load.
Mac Pro so far hold up strongly for years, easy to add and upgrade RAM and processor, and maybe, hopefully, even the twin GPUs. Thunderbolt2 for all your projects and storage as well.
6 or 8-cores is going to walk away from iMac which is breathing hard and not designed for constant heat. Haswell was designed to conserve and reduce.
