Cool new shuffle is out!

See http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopipod/family/ipodshuffle?mco=MTE2NTU
4GB, multiple playlists, voiceover. Looks tiny but awesome.

This hurts to write but here are some quick and honest observations:
You can tell that Apple is starting to get sloppy.
If you look carefully at the last minute of the instruction film, you can see that the white balance is noticeably off, creating a pink color-cast when compared to the rest of the film.
The old shuffle was brilliant in the gym because it allowed you to easily operate the unit via the logically placed and easily accessible buttons that you always knew where to find, without even looking! because it was clipped onto the location you last put it. (Great when running!)
The new shuffle forces you to fumble after and "search" for the controls that you know dangle somewhere on the headphone-cable (hmm...was it the left side or the right? jog, jog, jog...) The control buttons are tiny and more densely placed in relation to each other, making the unit trickier operate than the old intuitive shuffle.
Because the controls are fixed onto the default Apple stock headphones (brain-dead move by the way...) you can no longer use those nice in-ear headphones that you'ld normally want to use in the gym, on the plane or other noisy environments. The only headphones you can use are Apples in-ear headphones that cost as much as the new shuffle itself i.e $ 79 which means you'll have to pay a total of $158!
Tip:
Go out and grab a couple of the old shuffles while they last because this new shuffle will probably be known as the "Windows Vista of iPod shuffles" and share the same fate as the now extinct fat nano.
Do it now!

  • Ipod (1st gen) to new shuffle, how do I transfer music?

My old Ipod recently died, so I purchased a new ipod shuffle.  I also recently purchased a new laptop, as my old one was very slow.  I have not used the old ipod on the new computer.  I wish to transfer the music frm my old ipod to my new shuffle, via itunes.  I can't seem to figure out how to do this, as my old ipod is registered under my email address/user name etc.  I am not sure if that matters. I have downloaded itunes to the new computer, but when I sign it, it shows nothing.  Please help!

You'll need to copy the content on your old iPod to your iTunes library first before you can sync it to your new Shuffle. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to copy music from your iPod back to your PC.

  • New shuffle works with Windows but not with Mac

Just got a new 2nd gen shuffle. Initially it was formatted as Fat32 per Disk Utility on Mac. I reformatted to Mac OS (journaled). iTunes was recognizing the new shuffle on the mac and I created a playlist that showed it took up disk space in the "summary" tab. However nothing played on the shuffle when I disconnected it. I was trying to update the software but that function is greyed out. I tried to click "enable disc use" and when I applied it, it says it can't find the ipod. It wont let me update anything. The only thing I can do is create a playlist that the summary says is on the ipod but it doesnt play.
I then connected it to my Windows XP machine and it asked me to reformat the drive, which I did, then everything worked flawlessly. I would really prefer to download things to the shuffle from my Mac than Windows XP but it just won't let me. I tried using "iPod Updater" and the most recent one from the list was 03/2006 and that didn't help anyhting. "iPod Reset Utility" would not recognize the ipod to reset it even after I sucessfully set it to Mac OS journaled in Disk Utility.
I am very frustrated. This also happened to my Nano I purchased a few months ago and I have to organize it on the PC as well.
    I am running iTunes 7.2

I have exactly the same problem with my two
computers, both of which are Macs. The shuffle is
recognised on one, but not the other.
    Here's a screenshot of iTunes ->

    t-recognised.png
BTW, I also have an older white iPod in use on the
    Mac that doesn't work.
I've tried a few things (including running iTunes
under a different user account, reinstalling iTunes)
but nothing seems to help. The only thing left to do
is reinstall the OS, but that sounds a little extreme!
That's way too extreme... Use the shuffle Reset Utility.

  • Cool new features in Apple Discussion.

Even the bit for the most answer post!
has been extended, even with a different Color, or is it just me,
    my Eyes need checking out!
    Fr.BlayZay.

The quote function is gone. That's a cool new feature.
When replying, the focus of the cursor starts in the subject line, not the message field. That's a cool new feature.
The OS field is blank and doesn't match the OS that I've already entered into my profile. That's a cool new feature.
The overall width of the window is still too narrow. That's another cool new ******* feature.
I see that Safari gets a plug ever time a forum member posts from that browser. That's a really ******* super ******* cool feature.
And I had to delete my cookies to be able to log in. That was a ******* chore. I mean, it's a cool feature.
Yup, I'd have to agree. All very cool features.
There are some actual good features tho. It doesn't all suck...
It's now much easier to specify bold, italic, or underlined text using Wiki-like markup instead of the time-consuming bracketed markup tags.
And they haven't expunged my "Now wipe that smirk off your bill, duckboy!" field for being out of gamut with the TOS.
So when I average it all out, I guess it more than half *****. That's better than if it were to totally suck.
Sorry, but I hate change for the sake of it.

  • New shuffle - Itunes does not recognize

Apple recently replaced my shuffle, which was under warrenty when it stopped working. However, the itunes software won't recognize my new shuffle. What do I need to do?

I'm also trying out a replacement...THe orange light is blinking continuously and I'm not sure what's going on. The computer recognizes the ipod, but itunes doesn't refill. Any luck?

I'm hearing there is a new model out of my Singer sewing machine. Should I replace it?
(I really do own and use this one. Amazing example of 20th Century mechanical engineering. Sews through leather and almost anything; does what I need, but it's missing the Thunderbolt option. Too bad, no computer will serve its function this long.)

  • 0 for 2.. New Shuffle will not work

After buying a new shuffle yesterday, I got home, launched iTunes and used the check for updates and updated to the new 7.0.2 version. I then connected the new shuffle and nothing happened. I shutdown McAfee, rebooted the machine, restored the shuffle, numerous time and nothing happened. I am running Windows XP and none of my USB ports are the issue. I have a 3G 40GB that works on all of the ports. I have also made sure that neither the docking station, nor my other iPod were connected.
The shuffle appeared to be charging (blinking orange light), however neither iTunes, nor Windows recognized the device. I did notice that every few minutes, my computer would make that initial noise that is typically made when I plug my other iPod in, but nothing ever happened. I returned the unit to Best Buy and exchanged it for another one and I am having the same problems.
I have seen too many problems with other Windows users to think it is something with my machine. I have already spent nearly 5 hours between the two iPods trying to get it to work and if I cannot get help here, I am going to return the unit for a refund.

I reset the iPod, not restore. Sorry. I followed the Reset, Retry, Restart and Reinstall steps a few times but I cannot do restore because iTunes is not recognizing the iPod.
I also followed the steps for altering MSCONFIG and my machine still does not recognize the iPod. If I disconnect the new shuffle and plug my 3G iPod in, iTunes has no problems recognizing it.
I am using the USB ports on the motherboard (back of the machine). I also have two more USB ports (2.0) on the front and a 6 in 1 media reader that has two USB ports, secure digital and flash reader. My old iPod works in all of those ports, however I typically use it on one of the ports on the back. I am attempting to use my Shuffle on the same port that my old iPod uses (I simply disconnected my old iPod).

  • Got a new shuffle, now iTunes can't detect my old Mini

I am running iTunes 5.0.1 (Max OS X) with my iPod Mini. Yesterday I bought a Shuffle to use while running/biking. I had read it was possible to run two iPods off the same machine. I put my new Shuffle in the USB slot, after it was detected - I named it and filled it up with some songs from my existing iTunes library and it works fine. The only problem now is iTunes no longer detects my iPod Mini anymore when i connect it via Firwire. Same deal even when i eject & unplug the shuffle and re-attach the Mini. I've tried updating software, re-starting etc. still no success. Any advice or is this a hopeless cause?

Try calling AppleCare at 1-800-APL-CARE and try to reset your password to you old AppleID through them, Give them your MacBook Pro's serial number to avoid having to pay for phone support. You may have run out of options to reset your password youself, but they may be able to override you hacker's attempt to keep you out by having you verify billing info stored on the old Apple ID. Any content purchased with that old Apple ID will have to be authorized for playback on your new MacBook Pro with the original Apple ID and password that was used to purchase said content. To my knowledge there is currently no way of transfering ownership of content from one AppleID to another, however after you get your old Apple ID sorted out, you may be able to change the main email to one of your own and change your password to one thats tough to crack to avoid going through this terrible experience again.
    Hope that helps :-)

  • Use earlier iTunes with new Shuffle

I have just ordered a new Shuffle on Amazon. Presumably it will include a version of iTunes 5 or 6 on the CD with it.
I have got a pretty stable version 4.7 on the PC at the moment. What I am wondering is whether to stick with that in using the Shuffle. Assuming it worked.
I don't buy music so would not actually need a more contemporary iTunes.I am wary about all the uninstalling and reinstalling shenanigans I read about here.
    Thanks in advance.

I 100% agree. Owning nearly every product Apple makes, I am a HUGE fan of their engineering and thought process with products. However, did NO ONE ever actually go and exercise with the standard earbuds with mic or now with this control set??? The weight of the mic or the new shuffle control bar makes the cord bounce up and down as you run and jerk right out of your ear. Even with the foam earbud covers (not included) from the old school earbuds, the weight of the controls is still annoying. This to me does not seem like a 50/50 product design type thing where half people would like it and half wouldn't. They could have easily put the controls at the adaptor end, since it is designed for you not to have to look at it when you are using anyway. I hope the Klipsch or other third party earbuds think through this more.
As an aside, it also really ***** that you cannot buy earbuds without a mic now AT ALL! You almost just need to be lucky and still have your old set before they started including a mic on everything. Very annoying.
Anyone have any other earbuds they really like for jogging/working out that are supposed to be compatible with new shuffle in the future too?? I've tried the new apple earbuds also and these are kind of annoying from the fact that they try to block out all other sound.. which makes for a jarring sound while running. This is the same with the Shure's as well.

  • Other headphones w/ new shuffle?

Other than a fair number of older iPods handed out to my kids, given away to neighbors, etc., I have an iPhone I use for music. I'd like to get a new shuffle to use cycling in poorer weather, and just around the house so as not to have my phone stuck to me at all times just to listen to music. (I know I can switch off the phone part; just the size of the thing in comparison to the shuffle).
Cycling, I'll use the supplied earbuds w/ controls. Around the house I'll want to use some better over-ear headphones. I know that limits control, but will the switch on the shuffle -- shuffle, sequential, off -- actually start playing music? Or can I plug in the shuffle headphones, make my selections, then switch to the my other headphones? My iPhone cuts music playback if I unplug my headphones. With the shuffle that would prevent me from switching headphones.

The iPhone is germane because I'm referring to its iPod function -- that is, cutting playback of music when the headphones are disconnected.
What I reasoned out is, if the new shuffle headphones are the only thing that can initiate something as simple as playback, and I want to use a set of 3rd party headphones w/o any of Apple's remote controls, I would have to start the shuffle playing w/ the included headphones, then unplug them and switch to my preferred headphones. If the shuffle stops playback when the headphones are unplugged, this wouldn't work because once I plugged in the 3rd party headphones I would be unable to restart playback.
As an aside, your scolding, authoritarian tone in reply isn't helpful. When it's obvious you have no idea what you're talking and did not comprehend a pretty clear explanation it makes you look like a fool.
So I restate my question: Can I use 3rd party headphones w/ the new shuffle if all I need is to continue or restart playback?

  • New shuffle - loose hinge

Sorry if this is a bit of a double post - I wrote this under my thread about Shuffle replacement but it's not really the same issue. If anyone has any experience or opinion please advise. Thank you!
I took my problematic battery-challenged Shuffle to my local Apple store and they gave me a new one without a problem. But, because I seem to live under a black cloud when it comes to gadgets, this out-of-the-box Shuffle has a different problem, obvious from the first touch - the hinge/clip is loose. Looser than the one on the Shuffle I just returned, which you could hardly pry open; this opens like a yawning bird. It doesn't seem to have the same grip either. It does clip to things but not with as much tenacity as the other Shuffle.
As I imagine this will only get worse with time/use I am once again in the quandary of what to do. Try it for a few days - I bought this mainly to run with so I cannot have anything that's going to fall off - or go back to the store tomorrow and have them give me another new Shuffle? Really, nothing is easy in my life.
I'm beginning to feel a bit unhinged myself.

I went back to the Apple store since I had only bought it a few days before and the manager said it felt within the range of acceptable tension or whatever the term was, and, in fact, I even tried out another (new) one there and it was the same. So I could have just returned it but they weren't going to open up another box. So, I'm living with it. It hasn't fallen off yet. I can always send it in for a replacement but then it's the old story of is it reconditioned or new and does that matter, etc. Too bad the first one I bought was tight as a rat's a**. It wouldn't hold the battery charge so I returned it. Oh well. I seem to be surviving this one so far. Thank you for the advice and I hope you resolve your hinge problem as well.

  • New Shuffle?

am i dreaming here or is there a new shuffle out. i was on apples front page and it says the shuffle holds 240 songs. im pretty sure mine only holds 120 songs. is this true? i want a refund

The 240 song figure applies to the 1GB iPod shuffle using 128Kbps AAC songs which are 4 minutes in length. If you are using a 512MB shuffle, or have songs which are longer or encoded at a higher bitrate, or have allocated some of the shuffle for data, fewer songs will fit on the iPod.

  • New Shuffle skips/aborts VBR MP3s

My entire mp3 collection is encoded as variable bit rate (VBR). I bought my wife the new Shuffle and whenever it plays one of these songs, it skips and cuts out for a bit and then aborts completely and moves on to the next song. If I encode the same song as constant bit rate, it plays fine. Has anyone else had this issue??

Thanks both for your responses. Resetting the ID3 tags solved the problem for a couple of the files, but not all. Delving into exactly why some files play differently than others, I eventually stumbled across a Windows program called the GSpot Codec Information Appliance that informed me that some of my mp3s are actually coded MPEG 1 Layer 1! This is especially interesting because the offending files came from ripping some of my CD collection, meaning that RealPlayer is likely the culprit. I'm going to do some more experimenting to see if I can determine the culprit (and the extent of the problem in my 3400-song collection). Resaving with CoolEdit 2000 corrects the problem, but I'll have to set up a batch process if it turns out to be a lot of songs.
    cheers,
    Mike
