Cool way to make a grab & drag scrolling image...

Just thought I'd share this.
I was trying to figure out a way to make an image that's wider than the page scrollable with grab and drag functionality to it, rather than using a scrollbar.
It's pretty simple actually. I just created a box the size of the page and then imported my jpeg (The jpeg is about 5x as wide as the page, but at 72 dpi the file size is very manageble). Then it was just a matter of selecting the box I created and the jpeg together and creating a Horizontal Slider out of it. It works great! Just assign the box as the track component and your image as the thumb.
You just need to make sure that the Snap Interval and Step Size in the properties panel are both set to "0" for it to scroll smoothly.
I was hoping there's be a way to add momentum to the scroll, simalar to kinetic scrolling on an iphone or something, but I haven't figured that out...yet.
If anyone knows how, that would be killer.
Either way, it's kind of a cool way to set up a gallery or a visual  timeline.
This may be old news to some of you, but I thought I'd share anyways.
Cheers,
Ryan

THIS DOES NOT WORK IN PANINI. JUST CS5.

  • Is there any way to make copies of the maser image in LR3?

Is there any way to make copies of the maser image in LR3?
I do a lot of sports and dance photography and I need a way to make multiple copies of an image to drag into different folders in LR3.
Example:  One dancer may be on several teams and I need to make copies of the team photos to put in each dancers folder before I upload them to my E Commerce site so each dancer see's their team photo with their individual photos in the same folder online.
I know I can make virtual copies, but you cannot drag them to different folders as copies, it will move the virtual with the master.
If they would just let us hold ALT or any key while dragging to "copy" instead of  "move", my problem would be solved.
For now I have to go into Windows, make copies ,then synch the folders again. Pain in the rear to do that.
    Anyone have any experience here?
    Thanks

    Ron,
I too need to make "Real Copies" of images and hate doing anything directly from the OS because of the chance that my LR catalog gets out of Sync with the actual images on the computer.  So I make the copies inside LR with an export routine and then move the copies inside of LR with the normal drag and drop.  Once the export preset is created it can be executed from the Library Grid by right-clicking on the image (or selected images) to make the copies.  My settings are as follows in case you are interested:
This is the first time I have posted an image before and I am not sure if you will be able to read it or not.  The contents from the export preset in the image above are as follows if that helps:

  • Is there a way to make the arrow keys scroll through a page (webpage or other)? Lately, it seems to go right from the top of the page to the bottom, skipping everything in between.

Is there a way to make sure the arrow keys scroll through a page rather than jumping from the top to the bottom?

It is kind of strange that the files are not being overwritten. If you publish to a local folder and upload with an FTP app you should be able to set this to over write the old files.

  • Whats the simplest way to make a wrapper for 90 image graphic novel?

Hi. I have a graphic novel I want to convert into an app. There is some debate on what is the best route to go. It will have appx 90 images, so the images need to be unloaded as you go so memory is not an issue. The only controls are forward, back, and a button link to the app store, and a button link to the website. It needs additional memory management to make the last page viewed resume if the reader comes back after being interrupted. I have been told i need to work with uiscrollview and paging enabled, I was just looking to see if anyone had a simpler idea, or knew of code that was similar. Ths scrolling app is almost there, I am just unsure of how to adjust the code for images that fit the screen, as well as adding in the memory management features.
    Thanks for the help!

An intuos II to whoever solves this program!
The pagecontrol.app sample app has most of what is needed.
    Things that remain are:
    1) intelligent unloading of images to reduce memory
    2) a simple way to handle any number of prenamed images (possibly 100)
    3) data persistence so that resuming the app brings you back to the last page viewed
    4) a button on the first page to call a url in safari

  • Is there a way to make system.out.println() scroll down as it goes?

I am writing a program where I want to be able to read what's printed out in the console of my IDE through System.out.println() as the program runs/after the program runs. However, right now I run the program, the message prints out, and then when I go to read it the scroll bar is all the way up so I can see only the top of the print-out (the first thing printed out). Is there any way I can get the console to scroll along with the text, kind of like floating boxes you see on various websites for various reasons? In other words, can I get it so that when I look in the console at any given moment of the program running, I am looking at the newest text printed out (the text at the bottom of the "page")? Thank you!

That would be an IDE problem and not a Java one. You could redirect output into a text file so you can read at your leisure and scroll up and down as much as you like.

  • Stock market short selling ( what a cool way to make money )

    Hi
This was on BBC internet today...
There are also proposals for new guidelines on short selling, including requiring managers to regularly disclose information on important short positions to national authorities.
Short selling is a technique that sees investors borrow an asset, such as shares, currencies or oil contracts, from another investor and then sell that asset in the relevant market hoping the price will fall.
The aim is to buy back the asset at a lower price and return it to its owner, pocketing the difference.
On Monday, a key committee of Euro MPs backed a directive that may lead to greater supervision of the hedge fund industry.
Finance ministers must now negotiate with the European parliament over the legislation. Talks will begin on 31 May before a final vote in July.
If I remember right...in 1971 at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Smith...this is what happened:  Keep in mind there was only one "baby bond" or baby stock house...where you could have an account for less than about $10,000...in other words, all accounts were institutional, corporate etc...not individuals unless they were fairly wealthy....certainly not joe blow from next door.  Right off the bat I gotta say I can't cover "who owns the exchanges - the deregulation of banks and the effect on trading and underwriting...hedge funds and so on....it's very different today than it used to be...
But anyway, this is a day in the life of Bob The Buy-In-Clerk at Merrill in 1971...
Bob looks at a computer printout of fanned pages with a list of failed trades...
    What's a failed trade ?
You make a trade on the exchange...buying 10 shares of ATT at $10---   Being the seller.  You are a broker ( Kidder and Peabody ).  You have a customer that wanted to sell the ATT.  You do that for him.  You get a commission.  You have the shares in your vault because your customer didn't want them in his house. You sold to Merrill because THEY have a customer that wanted ATT.  Merrill will keep the shares in their vault so the customer doesn't have to keep them in his house.
Simple....BUT NOW WHAT ?  You have 5 days ( 5 business days ) to complete the trade.  5 Days for Kidder and Peabody to get a guy on a bicycle to run the 10 shares over to Merrill and hand them over through a window that looks like a bank teller's window....  ( THIS IS CALLED OVER THE COUNTER ...the window...which is where that term comes from re: trading between brokers that doesn't go through the exchanges )
If somebody goes to get the ATT from the vault at Kidder Peabody and discovers they are not there then what ?  Perhaps there was a death in the family of the customer and the shares are being broken up according to the estate settlement / last will ......like a piece of paper that says 30 shares on it needs to get broken into 3 pieces of paper that says 10 on them...This is called legal transfer...
Point being....whoops, the shares are at the bank being reprinted and the old one destroyed...( bank being the underwriter with the plates to make prints ) so you can't deliver the stuff.... After 5 days of not getting the ATT from Peabody it becomes a FAILED Trade...and Merrill is now within it's legal right to buy the shares it needs from someone else....another broker.....
If the price has gone down Merrill can buy the 10 shares and still collect ( from Peabody ) the money (difference) paid originally. Merrill keeps the difference, not their customer .......If the price has gone up Merrill still collects the difference but since you had to pay more you don't have any left over to keep for yourself....you just get the shares to your customer.....So buying and selling on failed trades ( a very common practice since it's unavoidable for legitimate reasons ) was the genesis of "selling short"......
Everyone knows you have 5 days to make a trade good.  Everyone knows that with credit from the broker and some nice deregulation..(naked short sell....you don't need to actually own the stock at all !!!  Like a miracle !!! Sell stuff you don't even have ....How cool is THAT ! ).you can make a trade (SELL ) betting the price will go down within 5 days...then buy it for less than you bought if for !   Like finding money growing on trees !!!!!
5 days was in 1971...  I have no idea how much time people have now in that market, and if it's over the counter it's not even going through the SEC dictated 5 day thing....so I'm out of luck about knowing much about what goes on nowadays....and I don't miss it a bit...
What used to be a function of making good on trades has turned into a betting system all it's own....not to make good on trades, but just to make the money tree shake....and so there's the down tick rule and up tick rule...haha....
Now the result to someone like Mr. Long Term investor like me...of short selling...and result to the Doggy Biscuit Company Inc....
I have stock in Doggy Biscuit...it's a nice company...with some cash on hand but some debt as well...it has a line of credit from a nice big bank. It's line of credit is based on it's assets ( worth )...It has a few shares of this and that on it's books ( other doggy products it has invested in )....
There is some bad news about some distribution system ( UPS goes on strike and now many companies like Doggy Biscuit can't get certain stuff to make the biscuits and has trouble delivering said biscuits...)...and some people who hear about it figure they will sell Doggy Biscuit short...yipee...almost guaranteed money off the money tree !!!!  Share prices go down....Doggy Biscuit can't understand why it's going down so fast and so far !!!  This isn't a deal breaker...the strike will end, the dogs will get the biscuits....it's just a little burp in the quarter....but Doggy Biscuit, thanks to all the many short sellers ( yippeeee  ....free money !!!! ) Doggy Biscuit tanks out losing 50% of it's worth in a couple days.  It's line of credit shrinks.  It gets called ( margin call ) on some debt and has to sell it's stock in the other doggy products at a loss....and Doggy Biscuit is on the ropes.  Mr. Long Term investor like me now has Doggy Biscuit stock worth about one half what I bought it for....I have lost tons of money on the share price....
That is the wonderful world of short selling.... lets do more of it !!!!!!!!!!

More cool info about the marketplace:
    http://www.investopedia.com/university/futures/default.asp
Found the above link tutorial on futures market...very good tutorial...
below is a segment of one section that applies more or less to my amazement over the proposed idea of a futures market in motion pictures...
After you read it , think of the possibilities of "influencing" the marketing and success / failure of a particular movie ( with movie stars...a rich source of material for publication ---news items etc )....  and or the overall health of a studio ( distributer - independent productions etc )  It boggles the mind...The effect of piracy in certain countries etc...
How far does the futures market for the price of grain, for example ( leading to the spot market and actual delivery of commodity ) skew off into the realm  of whacky speculation when considering world wide distribution of a movie making a certain profit or not....   and who in the world could possibly oversee that kind of derrivative or settle disputes ?

    portion of tutorial below
    Speculators
Other market participants, however, do not aim to minimize risk but rather to benefit from the inherently risky nature of the futures market. These are the speculators, and they aim to profit from the very price change that hedgers are protecting themselves against. Hedgers want to minimize their risk no matter what they're investing in, while speculators want to increase their risk and therefore maximize their profits.
In the futures market, a speculator buying a contract low in order to sell high in the future would most likely be buying that contract from a hedger selling a contract low in anticipation of declining prices in the future.
Unlike the hedger, the speculator does not actually seek to own the commodity in question. Rather, he or she will enter the market seeking profits by offsetting rising and declining prices through the buying and selling of contracts.
    Trader
    Short
    Long
    The Hedger
Secure a price now to protect against future declining prices
Secure a price now to protect against future rising prices
    The Speculator
Secure a price now in anticipation of declining prices
Secure a price now in anticipation of rising prices
In a fast-paced market into which information is continuously being fed, speculators and hedgers bounce off of - and benefit from - each other. The closer it gets to the time of the contract's expiration, the more solid the information entering the market will be regarding the commodity in question. Thus, all can expect a more accurate reflection of supply and demand and the corresponding price.

  • Is there a way to make high res screen grabs

i often use the shift apple 4 key board shortcut to make selected screen grabs, although I was wondering is there a way to make screen grabs a higher resolution than the standard 72dpi?

You can't increase the resolution of an image except in printing. If you print at a smaller size the you'll be squeezing more pixels in a smaller area thus increasing the dpi resolution of the print. But you can increase the resolution of the image file generated by the screenshot. Well, you can with Photoshop by resampling but it's never as good as the original. Screenshots are 72 dpi (or whatever the screen is - some at 92 or so) with the pixel dimensions as displayed on the screen.

  • Is there a way to make the scroll wheel move up and down instantly like you could with previous versions, instead of moving slowly up and down?

I've only recently updated my firefox to v 15.0.1 after using v 10 for so long, and I was wondering if there is a way to make the scroll wheel move up and down instantly without having it slowly crawl to it's spot?

    you can disable smooth scrolling.

  • Is there a way to make your g4 powermac cooler

is there a way to make your g4 powermac run cooler the processors run very hot

    The Vantec is thermally controlled.
    So is the OEM.
Both are variable speed, with the OEM maxing at 23.5 CFM.
The Vantec maxes at 24.2 CFM.
Stepping of the Vantec fan is much better than the OEM.
Smoother, and I think faster, sooner.
Trouble with the OEM is the noise at full speed.
Though "advertised" dB ratings are the essentially the same at full speed, I find the Vantec to be far quieter than the OEM.
Before I changed my PSU fan in my DP 1.0 GHz QS, I could hear the din of the OEM CPU fan (full speed) even with the PSU fan roaring away.
Changed both and the machine is civilized.
The Vantec is quieter than OEM.
The Verax fan that I replaced the PSU fan with also helped immensly.
Connecting the Vantec to a molex to a 3 or 4 pin adapter works fine.
So does using a 2 pin approach using the 12v and common to the logic board connector where the OEM connects.
The RPM detector wire is not needed and can be cut off or ignored.
The voltage ratings of the two fans are so close that no adverse effects will occur connected to the logic board.
I try fans with adapter cabling. If I like them, wherever possible, I scavenge and solder OEM connectors to the new fans and use the G4 OEM connections.

  • Easiest Way to make scrolling text with color

What is the easiest way to make scrollable text that I can
set to whatever font I want (embeded of course)
have it look very well anti-aliased; like most Flash text, not like it's being read out of a regular system or browser window. (the text will be big so no probs)
have different portions of the text be different colors so I can highlight certain words and leave others alone
use actionscript to load text content into it
maybe make (all) the text semi transparent for design purposes
I'm going to use some action script to load some XML content into the text areas or whatever. Any of you know of any easy ways of accomplishing this? or have a link to any type of tutorial? (at least for Flash CS3 and above of course, along with ActionScript 3)

Go to Lee Brimlow's website. It has some great tutorials, including one on loading an XML file.

  • Is there a way to make the multitrack behave as the edit window?

I have been using the 30 day trial and am on my last day. I find Audition great except for 2 things(both of which I probably just don't know how to use).
1.Is there a way to make a track shrink or enlarge with the mouse scroll as in edit. I find it really annoying when all it does in the multitrack is scroll up and down between the tracks.
2.I can't seem to click on a track in the multi track and get it to play from there. I have to drag the play marker to that point.
I'm sure these problems can be rectified and it's just because I haven't read the full spec.
    Many Thanks

    >I find Audition great
    Yes it is!
    >1.Is there a way to make a track shrink or enlarge with the mouse scroll as in edit. I find it really annoying when all it does in the multitrack is scroll up and down between the tracks.
You are scrolling in the window you need to place your mouse over the vertical bar on the far right of the screen and then scroll
    >2.I can't seem to click on a track in the multi track and get it to play from there. I have to drag the play marker to that point
Right mouse click on transport control (play button) and select play from cursor to end of file.

  • Is Grabbing/Dragging possible in FC??

Some applications have the possibility to 'grab' something (a picture for instance) with the left-mouse-key held down. In this way you can 'drag' the picture around, keeping the left-mouse-key down. Grabbing/Dragging stops when the left-mouse-key is released. Somewhat like you can drag maps around in GoogleMaps.
Can I make this functionality in Flash Catalyst???
    (Please say: YES!!)

You can add that functionality by using Flash Builder, but Flash Catalyst does not support that functionality. Depending on if you are building a simulation or prototype, the swf solution would also work.
Here some information on drag and drop in Flash Builder if you want to see how drag and drop is coded:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/adding_drag_and_drop/
To simply drag objects around, you can use DragManager.doDrag():
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/langref/mx/managers/DragManager.html# doDrag()
Also, there's an interesting tutorial written by Krystal Higgins, showing how she simulated a drag and drop in Catalyst, which you might find useful:
Simulated Drag and Drop in Flash Catalyst.
    Hope this helps,

  • Is there any way to make Mail open next message?

Is there any way to make Mail open the next message on the inbox automatically after deleting, forwarding o saving a message?
I mean, is there any way to, after reading a message, going to the next or previous message without double clicking the main inbox window?
I used (on windows) to read mail on outlook, or even on entourage for mac, and after I read a message, even if I deleted it, forward it, replied it, or even saving it on a folder, automatically the program (outlook, entourage, hotmail, etc) opened the next message on the inbox, but I am not able to find any way to make Mail do that.
Is there a way to it? Or should I provide suggestions to Apple?
By the way, no meant to prefer microsoft for this, I just think this is a cool feature for reading several messages one after another without going back to the main inbox page and double clicking the message to read...
    Thanks for any help

Down-arrow, Return. Return opens the selected message. I read through hundreds of messages without ever touching the mouse. Once you get used to the keystrokes, Mail is extremely efficient.

  • Is there a way to make Illustrator save in the background, like Photoshop?

Out of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, Illustrator is definitely the one I have most problems working with, due to small UI differences and ways of handling things
Like the fact that you can't drag next to a number to change it, like in Photoshop. Or the fact that I can't sync my settings (it only says "Signed in as:", and when I press Manage Account, I'm taken to my CC files in Safari).
But most annoying is the fact that whenever I'll save a document in Illustrator, a dialogue box opens letting me know the progress of the saving. Not only does this make me unable to continue working on the document (if the file is large, it takes some time), the app icon starts jumping in the dock if I switch to another program before the box appears.
So, is there any way to make it save in the background, like in Photoshop? I'm running OS X, with Illustrator version 17.1.0.

This really frustrates me, small differences between the apps that shouldn't be there.
I understand you can't change the keyboard shortcuts to be the same/similar, but this is totally different. Let's hope it changes soon.
