Cooler XP and KT7 Turbo 2 w/Athlon XP 1600

Hello. I recently purchased a new MSI KT7 Turbo 2 Motherboard off Newegg for a terrific price ($33) because it uses the KT133A chipset and I had SDRAM waiting to be used. I put in an AGOIA stepping Athlon XP 1600. I'm new to the whole voltage regulation business and never tried overclocking, so I could use some advice.
I noticed that under normal use the CPU temp sits at 115°F. Running Madonion's PCMark2002 I get a CPU score of 4052. I get the following voltage indications: Vcore=1.76 3.3v=3.33 +5v=5.15 +12v=11.82
Using MSI's "Cooler XP" program that I downloaded from MSI's website, I get the system to idle at an amazing 83°F (28°C). It adjusts my voltages to the following: Vcore=1.80 3.3v=3.33 +5v=5.13 +12v=11.94
The decrease in temperature is phenomenal, but is it good for the system? Using PCMark2002 my CPU score drops slightly to 4020. Should I use this program, or is there a better way? Should I set the values within the bios at the "Cooler XP" values? Will it have the same cooling effect.  How does "Cooler XP" work?
Also, if it matters, I am using a Raidmax 320 watt power supply with both the standard power connector and the 12v connector attached to the motherboard.
Any comments on the program, recommendations and hints are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

After letting my system run last night, the CPU temp this morning was an amazing 78°F (26°C).  Wow!  My Athlon XP 1700 on an Epox 8KHA+ runs at a constant 115°F even when it sits nearly idle overnight.
Thanks again for your help!
Hi,
In short, Cooler XP set the CPU to low power mode when it's idle, ie shut off certain parts of CPU where they are not performing anything to consume less power, and result lower heat dissipation.
There are other similar tools like VCool, CPU Idle, etc also achieve the same result via similar approach.
No, you can't emulate them by changing the voltage in the BIOS. It has nothing to do with this CPU cooling tools.

  • KT7 Turbo 2 / 2600+ Athlon - Please help

I have KT2 Turbo 2 board (MS 6330), current BIOS 3.6 which i've just upgraded.  This should now run a 2600+ Athlon with 266 fsb. Put some RAM in too so now 920MB and bought Athlon XP 2600+ 266fsb chip.
Everything installed ok, jumper pulled to run at 133 fsb also.
Startup and CPU detected at 2000+ and speed of 1.66 Ghz. Is thi right? However it will not boot past Windows (XP Home) loading screen. Thought it was video card to start (loose connection) as its not a great fit and has caused probs before but doesn't seem to be this. Will boot in fine however in safe mode.
Back to 800 Duron now and everything is fine. Can anybody please help.
    Many thanks.

So you mean my fsb needs to stay at 100 (jumper on) and I cant run full speed?
All memory is 133 just for info. Like I said now back to Duron 800 with jumper ON.
What would happen with Athlon 2600+ but leave jumper on and run at 100 fsb.
Read a few posts and not sure if this makes any difference but PSU says:-
    Max Load 250W
    +5v 25A
    +12v 10A
    -5v 0.5A
    -12v 0.5A
Right, just checked bas's troublshooting guide and from the letters designating CPU fsb it seems mine IS a 166 fsb (AXD2600DKV3D) when it should be a 133 fsb.
Will swap and hope it fixes it. Anybody any ideas on PSU as from looking at other posts it doesn't look too good.

  • KT7 Turbo V3 and USB mouse problem

Hello!  I'm hoping someone here can help me out with this problem.  I've looked thru numerous other threads here regarding USB problems, and I'm not certain if any of them apply to me.
KT7 Turbo V3 with lastest Live BIOS downloaded and flashed.
    Athlon 1GHz
    512MB RAM (2x256 Crucial)
    Windows 98SE
    300W PSU
    Nvidia Geforce2 MX
Logitech Cordless Optical USB mouse (2 button)
Anyway, in pursuing a problem discussed in another thread, I upgraded my BIOS and re-installed my operating system.  Actually, I've done both multiple times, including re-Fdisking and formatting.
Since then, whenever I make a BIOS change of any type, or change any drivers, etc., the mouse stops responding, and Windows gives a "No mouse detected error" upon booting. I fix this by going into Control Panel>System>Devices and deleting the Human Interface device, and then either Refresh or re-boot.
I'm afraid to even install the Logitech drivers anymore, because the last time I tried it, and had this problem, Windows wouldn't even boot after I deleted the mouse in Devices.
I never had a single problem with this mouse until I updated my BIOS.  Has anyone heard of this problem before?  I'm thinking about going back a few BIOS versions, but I also want to pop an Athlon 1600+ in my machine, so I was afraid I might need a newer version to support it.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!
    - Rick

FYI for anyone else having this problem, going back to an old BIOS version seems to have fixed this.  Both v2.4 and 2.9 seem to work fine.

  • Overclocking Athlon XP 2400+ on Msi KT7 Turbo 2

i have a kt7 turbo 2 mobo with athlon xp 2400+, would like to overclock this. My mate has the Combo-L and all you have to do is change the clock speed. I cannot find a way of overclocking my CPU on my turbo2 board can any1 plz help?
    Cheers Guys

your mobo has a kt133a chipset and as far as i know, the highest fsb it reached with a pc133 ram is only 147. and the maximum multiplier with that mobo is only x15. you could try x9 multiplier. 9x=17x it boots without an unlocked processor..

  • KT7 Turbo 2 and AMD XP 2400+ ???

    Hi guys,
I would appreciate any help any one will give me.  And, I apologize if I missed an area that would explain a solution to my problem.
I have a KT7 Turbo 2 and 512 MB of pc133.  I just recently upgraded from a duron 700 to the XP 2400+... which according to CPU Support page, should be okay.
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/cpu_support/cpu/spt_cpu_detail.php?UID=24
I have flashed the BIOS to the most current version,  3.6 ...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=24
But, on POST registers it as an 1800 and doing a dxdiag in Windows shows it ~1.5GB?
What am I missing here???  I have never overclocked before, and know only basics in BIOS settings... so if someone could spoon-feed me here, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Very Much

I am not so sure - remember that Bartons have lower clocks and lower voltage - they make less heat...
I just get computer with burned 1700+ Palomino - cooler was CoolerMaster HCC-L61 (rated up to XP3000) to do something with it (cooler is working ok, but Palomino is 1.75v and is making really big heat :D )

  • Weird problems with kt7 turbo (6330), PLEASE HELP!!

I just this last week purchased an older kt7 turbo (6330) to upgrade my brother's computer. I am pairing this with an Athlon XP 1700 processor. After installing all the hardware and booting up the computer, I started getting various errors. Sometimes the screen would just flash all kinds of colors, sometimes it would say something about a bios check not detecting the a: drive followed by insistent beeping, sometimes it just wouldn't start at all. After much hassle, I finally got the newest bios installed from MSI that claimed to fix some stuff between this motherboard and an Athlon XP 1700. (I didn't at the time suspect this to be the true culprit) Finally on Sunday afternoon, after a cold start, it magically started up and I finally got Windows XP installed. I found some drivers on the reference CD that seemed to help some. But now, after about 5-10 minutes, depending on the software being used, the computer will just shut itself down after a 60 second warning message. When I try reseting it, I start getting all of those weird errors again. The only way to get the computer to start up normally again is to let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to cool down, and then cold start it. At which point it will work again for another 10-15 minutes and shut down again. I am getting SOOOOO tired of these MSI motherboards not working for me!! I think MSI has a personal problem with me. PLEASE help me!! By the way, I don't think it's power related, cause I just put in a brand new P4 certified 400Watt powersupply.

Sounds like your heatsink on your CPU may not be seated correctly. Try pulling it, cleaning, reapplying compound, and reseating it.

  • KT7 Turbo Limited memory???

    Greetings All!
I have a KT7 Turbo Limited Edition mobo and I'm presently using PC133 RAM. I have heard that I can use newer/faster RAM but I'm not sure what to get. Any suggestions? Also, I've heard you can install a fater CPU than the 1.4 Athlon I have now. Again, I'm not sure what to get.
    Regards,
    orasyb

K7T! That's it! I'm not quite await yet
Hmmmm....I thought I read somewhere on another thread that DDR ram (maybe 2700) was being used successfully on this mobo. Any thoughts?

  • KT7 Turbo - DMA not working for HDD

Hello all!  I'm hoping someone can help me out with a little problem.
    I have a KT7 Turbo v3 with:
    1GHz Athlon
    512 MB RAM (2 x 256MB, from Crucial)
    300W power supply
    Maxtor DiamondMax 20GB HDD
I've never been able to get the Maxtor to run reliably in DMA mode.  If I try to do a large file copy or run a game, the computer will lock up.
I do have an 80 pin IDE cable.  The drive has run reliably in PIO mode. There are no other IDE devices on this controller (IDE 0).
I've tried applying the current BIOS available from Live Update, without success.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    - Rick

Okay, still need  help here please!  :(
The first thing I did (since the last post) was move the jumper to clear the BIOS, and re-flash it with the current Live Bios version (sorry, can't remember the number.)
Then I used Fdisk on my drive (including Fdisk /mbr), formatted it, and re-installed Windows 98SE (with FAT32).  I then installed the VIA 4-in1 drivers that came with my mother board (v4.28), the audio drivers, DirectX 8.1, and v4.29 of the Nvidia drivers (for my Geforce2 MX).
I then installed a game I play, Dark Age of Camelot, bith the original version, and the new version, called Shrouded Isles.  If you're unfamiliar with these titles they're online 3D, DirectX, massively multiplayer games.
Anyway, with the BIOS set in whatever the default configuration is, as soon as I go into the game I get dumped out within about 10 seconds to the desktop.
When I try and copy one of the game directories, which are quite large, to a temp directory the computer will lock up, or give an error such as:
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C004EA3A in VXD VCACHE(01) +0000019A. The current application will be terminated."
I then tried upgrading the 4-in-1 driver, the audio driver, and the video driver, with the same result.
I tired disabling DMA on the hard drive in BIOS and in Control Panel>System>Devices, and still had problems.
Then I went into the BIOS and selected "Load Fail-Safe Defaults".  After this, I was able to run around in the game for several minutes.  Then I tried copying files.  The first time, the copy was successful. The second time, the system locked up. So not cured, but substantially better.
One thing I noticed when trying to figure out what loading the Fail-Safe BIOS settings did besides turn off DMA, was it turned off IDE Prefetch Mode and IDE HDD Block Mode.  Not sure if that means anything.  I tried using DMA with Prefetch and Block Mode off, but that had the same lock-up problem.
Anyone have any ideas?  I'd be happy if I could just pin point which component is causing these problems so I could replace it!
    Thanks!

  • KT7 Turbo, 6330(I think) Ram problems

I just bought a MSI KT7 Turbo mobo, AthlonXP 1600+ palomino cpu and Corsair 512 MB PC133 RAM for 100 bucks....good deal? well if it worked. I set everything up and it boots fine, but as soon as I reset the computer it just gives me a blank screen and no POST, I have to reset the BIOS to get it to boot again. The diagnostic LEDs says its the Memory, but I can boot once and everything works fine? So I changed the FSB to PC100 and it works, but my proc is now 1050MHz, Im confused, if it was the memory how would I be able to boot once and get into windows no probs...and yes Im sure the RAM is PC133. Argh, any suggestions would be GREAT right now, I hope Im just missing soemthing, maybe cause this is my first AMD system I'm overlooking something? TIA
    300 Antec PSU
    AMD 1600+ palomino core
    KT7 Turbo board
    Corsair 512MB PC133 Value Select
    Viper V770 Ultra AGP card

I put another PSU in, dont know if its better really, but its a 300w model. This is so wierd, cause as I am writting this its running at 133FSB, full specs, ran sandra and its exactly on the dot compared to another 1600+. But as soon as I reset it, it wont boot, the Diagnoxtic LEDs will say its my RAM and Ill have to change the FSB to 100, then back to 133 to get it to boot. argh, I think the mobo is fux0red :(

  • KT7 Turbo MS-6330

Someone Please HELP!!!  I just bought a motherboard from an online vendor labeled KT7-Turbo MS-6330.  The vendor stated that the board would support AthlonXP CPU's up to 1.4GHz @ 266MHz FSB.  The problem is that upon receiving the board I noticed that the southbridge chipset is VT82C686A, not VT82C686B which is listed for KT7 Turbo's on the MSI website.  Did the vendor accidentally send me a KT7-Pro instead?  Can someone please tell me how I can find out what type motherboard this is without booting to BIOS?  (I can't boot to bios cause I don't want to use the Athlon XP 1.4GHz @ 266FSB if the board only supports 200FSB)...

  • KT7 Turbo-R Packaging or RAID Confusion

I just purchased a motherboard which was identified on the seller's site as MICROSTAR K7T TURBO-R W/RAID SOCKET A -4X AGP ATA 100 @266 FSB ATX
On arrival, I found that the box said "w/RAID Optional".  The board has the Promise controller chip and the IDE3 and IDE4 connectors.  Also, there was an IDE RAID manual in the box, along with a users guide entitled "KT7 Turbo (MS-6330)".
The only mention of RAID in the users guide is on page 2.16 where it says "...please refer to the Promise RAID manual...".
I DO have my 2 hard drives connected properly to IDE3 and IDE4.  I did not see any options anywhere in the Bios setup that would indicate activating the Promise features.
The Promise RAID manual indicates that during the boot sequence, the FastTrak message will appear and allow me to enter Ctrl-F to get into the functions.  THIS IS NOT HAPPENING.
Do I have everything that MSI provides to implement IDE-RAID (as my boot drive)?  If so, how do I enable IDE-RAID on this board?

OK, I called tech support once again, and got a different technician this time.  He confirmed that this model of board should have RAID, and that an array should be configured with one drive each in IDE3 and IDE4.  He then took me through a few tests, and confirmed Tamas' suggestion that I should try flashing the BIOS before I assumed that the chip was defective.
I now have flashed, and when I booted up, it did display the FastTrak info, and enabled me to get into the the configuration utility.  My system is now duplicating to the mirror drive.
    So my lessons learned are......
    1) If the answer doesn't sound right, even if it is from tech support, it probably isn't right.
    2) It is possible to have a "lazy" BIOS, which doesn't provide access to all the features which SHOULD be there.
    3) That when other options have been exhausted, flashing the BIOS becomes an appropriate diagnostic and corrective strategy.
Thanks to all who helped out!!

  • Cant change J17 on KT7 Turbo 2, WHY?

Hello Everyone, hope you can help me.
I just installed a KT7 Turbo 2, with a Duron 1200, it went ok, the problem is that if the J17 is closes (with jumper) the computer is fine, it boots, works and stable... BUT if i take the jumper off so that it will boot at 133 fsb, it wont boot, it continuosly beeps and i have to shut down and put the jumper back so that it may work.
I have tried resetting will beeping - doesnt do the job.
    What could it be?

Thank you very much, thats what i did.
The CPU was already unlocked, so i just backed down the multiplier to 7,5 and it booted.
    Perfect.
Im going to keep the multiplier low so that i can see if i can overclock it to FSB 150, my goal is fsb 150 with a multiplier of 9.5 or 10.
Always with mem at CAS 2

  • KT7 TURBO-2 No AC97 Sound in XP Pro

I have MSI KT7 TURBO-2 (MS-6330 v 5.x), supposedly there is on Board AC97 Audio according to the manual, all the internal and external audio connectors are on the m/b however Windows XP does not see any sound devices being installed. I made sure on-chip is enabled in the BIOS, still no sound card is seen. None of the audio drivers supplied on the driver CD work, they all give message "There is no xxxxx audio device on your system". First of all, it would be nice to know which sound chip is actually shipped with the board, and second is there any secret setting to get the on-chip audio working in XP ? There are no missing devices in the devices manager, it's like the device does not exists.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    3. a third possibility (found in practice and also here in the forum - don't ask me why exactly  ;-) is that the board will work but will show problems with the sound - it could be that the sound circuitry is more sensitive to the effects of grounding.
I would think that if the onboard sound is not working due to grounding, that same grounding could lead to other problems in the long run. In that way, this effect could be a blessing in disguise and I would definitely try hard to solve the problem - even if I would be planning on using a PCI soundcard. AFAIK, if the on board sound is not working for such a reason, it is very well prossible that a sound card will not work either ... (edit: but as you can see above, sometimes it will  ) )

PS: Nocturnal, keep us posted on the freezing ...
    Hans,
Thanks for the reply. I decided for the sake of being sure to take out my SB PCI 128 card and see if I could get the onboard sound to work. Thankfully I had no problems. Now I have another question. What advantages or disadvantages are there to using the onboard sound? What are the best drivers? Would I be better to reinstall my SB PCI 128? Thanks for the help.
    Dave

Being the inquisitive mind that I am   , I removed the mobo and used plastic pegs in the place of 3 center screws, voila the on board sound magically came back on ! It was just for my curiosity since I don't want to use the crappy AC97 audio anyway. SB Live is much better   . Anyhow, as to the video freezing, I loaded "Fail Safe Defaults" in the latest BIOS and downloaded latest ATI Direct X 9 drivers and the problem has disapppeared. When I try to load "Optimized Defaults" I still get video freezing problems, so I just left it on the fail safe since friday and it seems to be rocks solid stable. Thanks for your input.
