Cooling fan for iMac G5 - at top speed

Even when only one program is open (like now with Firefox) the cooling fan is running at top speed.
Is there any way to check on why and solve the problem?

Hi jaygreenman,
Just wanted to suggest, since you are not receiving much help here, that you may want to post your topic over in the iMac G5 usage forum:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=881
Do a search there for "fan running full speed" or something similar and you'll find a lot of topics dealing with fan problems.
Sorry that's all I can suggest but hope that helps some,

  • Need cooling fan for Satellite A50-542

    Hi,
I have a SA50-542 and the cooling fan has packed in.
Any guidance as to where I might be able to get another one?
    many thanks dan

    Hello Dan
What to say? Either you can contact authorized service provider in your country and try to order one there or you can google around and search if any online shop offer notebook parts.
I do not see any other way to find this hardware component.
Oh yes. You can also check eBay. There you can find many hardware components for different Toshiba notebooks especially for older notebook models.

  • Cooling Fan in iMac G3

    Hi,
Yesterday my 600mhz iMac G3 Snow overheated twice. And yes, it is properly ventilated and in an air conditioned room. I went on ebay and bought a fan, some wire, a toggle switch and two nine volt battery clips. I am going to power the fan using the batteries because I want to keep the whole fan setup seprate from the internal components. I plan to hang the fan from the top handle vent holes, with wire suspending it from the vent holes. The wires going to the toggle switch will run through the vent holes, outside the unit, and the toggle switch will be on top of the unit. I need to know if I should use the fan in an exaust or an intake setup.
    Any answers are appreciated.

No one's done this, so you won't find any expert opionion. (But I don't see how you can keep running the fan on a 9V battery, alone. Especially, as the battery drains and the fan slows down.) Just go with what you think will work best. Heat rises. I just use a small AC clip-on fan mounted to a bracket about 2 1/2 feet away, to avoid magnetic field interference to the CRT. It blows enough air across the upper vent to move away the hot exhaust enough to keep things reasonably cool. When it's insufferably hot, I just don't use the G3 or sleep it more often.
It's maybe not a very good proxy for the PAV area, since it's located much lower, but it's all that's available; there are no sensors on the G3: I have Bresink's Temperature Monitor (lite), which finds the temp from the SMART of the drive. With the fan, I don't often see the drive getting much beyond the low to mid 40s C and in the winter it doesn't often get above 40C. Maybe it will work with your drive.

  • Cooling Mods for iMac G5?

I have an 17" iMac G5 (original) and use it all day. I suffer from the constant fan noise as many users here do.
I've noticeed that later revs of the iMac have additional vent holes on the back casing to allow for additional airflow to cool the system better than my original model iMac G5 which only has inlet vents along the bottom of the case.
I'm wondering if anyone has modified their iMacs to allow for additional cooling and if it made the unit quieter. Hopefully, the mod doesn't involve physical modifications like cutting as my iMac falls into the range of serial numbers that are covered by the extended recall warranty for the bad capacitors.
    Thanks!

I totally agree with the "getting on the phone and complaining until the issue is fixed!" I did what alot of Mac-friends said couldnt be done. I had my iMac G5 replaced 2 months after the expiration of the waranty.
I had a rev A iMac G5 20 incher. Over the course of its first 11 months it had to be fixed 5 times. The issues, in order were-->failed inverter, failing optical drive, failing motherboard, failing power supply and finally the last issue i was having was a bad inverter AGAIN!
Now I know that they ( Apple) has issued an extension of the waranties on many of the first generation iMac G5s' but this one wasnt on that list. ( Supposedly!) But I was dilegent and wouldnt take "NO!" for an answer. They kept telling me that they would send me one more inverter and if that didnt fix it once and for all, they would then replace it the next time it broke down. I just couldnt or wouldnt do it that way. I mean, like I told the Apple Rep. I had had so many issues with this computer that I had begun to think that the machine had been abused before I got it somehow.
The Rep, had to call me back 3 times and kept trying to just send me one more part to fix it. But I just wanted out from under the darn thing after having had so many problems, and MAJOR ones at that! I remained calm the entire time, was respectful of what the rep. was trying to do but politely declined his offer saying that " I really just want my machine replaced, or maybe just give me my money back and I'll go elsewhere. " I explained " I am becoming concerned about the longevity of Apple products at this point! Maybe I'd be better off with a different manufacturer." It was at this point the rep. once more asked if he could call me back in 30 minutes. When he did, he said the new machine would be on the way. And not only did they replace the machine but they also replaced the 2gb of memory since my first gen and the newly availble rev c or iSIght iMac G5 used different memory. ( My 2gb of ram from the rev a. would be useless with the rev c. iMac G5.)
A long story i know. But its proof that sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself and let the evidence speak for itself. Sometimes you have to be patient and I really think that if you start cursing or insulting reps you wont get far at all. Just be calm, treat people as youd like to be treated and dont take no for an answer.
Anyway, this is a bit off topic but I wanted to relate it to anyone interested.

  • Serial number for iMac and Lap top

I have just upgraded to LR5. I have it set up on my IMac no problem. I am wanting to be able to use it on my laptop also. In previous versions of LR i have been able to use the same Serial Number for laptop and the iMac (as long as they are both not running at the same time), however I am not able to do this with LR5? Do I need to buy another serial number? If so, how do i do this?
    Thanking you greatly in advance,

Hi! I have the same problem. Lightroom 5 installed correctly in my MBP but when I try to install it on my iMac (with the same serial number and Adobe ID) it does not work because "not valid", as it says.
I've read that the same user could use the program at least in 2 different computers, so this was a big - sad - surprise. I'm quite disappointed with it and soon I will get in touch with the Adobe assistance

  • A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery

    Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
    1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
    2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
    AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
    CPU A 44C 111F
    CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
    CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
    3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
    a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
    b) reboot
    c) remove smcfancontrol
    d) use smcfancontrol
    e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
    f) no runaway processes - not even hot
    4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy mac

    Hi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC faulty cooling fan needs replacement.

My cooling fan recently started becoming very loud on it's lowest speeds and I suspect I will need to replace it soon before it goes out completely. • Quiet Cooling Fan

Does anybody know if apple make a quieter cooling fan for the eMac cos mine is pretty loud and keeps everone awake at night!!!
    Mike

    Hi Creds,
Sorry to hear that your fan has become louder over time. Unfortunately that's been my experience with every single fan I've ever installed (mainly in desktops). I guess bearings wear out. I've only been using my T500 for a few weeks now. I've been debating whether to let the fan run as it likes or to take software control over it and run it less often. The fan is so quiet that until now I've been content to let it run, but if I can prolong its quiet life by running it less often I might do the software control thing.
A couple of thoughts about your T500: Are you sure it's the fan that has become louder and not the hard drive? Those tend to get louder with age too, unfortunately. And I saw in another thread that you're asking where the fan exhaust is: it's at the back left. I think the idea of blowing compressed air in there is to clean the cpu heatsink you can see right inside the vent.
Which CPU do you have in your T500? You could try undervolting it to bring down power use / temperature / fan speed.

  • Compaq C700 cooling fan's part number?

    Hi
I wonder if the cooling fan 438528-001 can be used on Compaq C700?
It does not show Compaq C700 is compatible with it on hp.com
But when I searched on ebay, many compaq c7800 cooling fans for sale have part number 438528-001:
    http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=compaq+c700+fan&_sacat=See-All-Categor...
FYI on C700's service manual, the part number is 454944-001.
    Could anyone pls clarify?
    Thanks.

I had one of these units. It was a great machine but it was LOUD. The reason behind this was that the fans basically had one speed... FAST AND LOUD.
The latter units had variable speed fans and were a little more quieter.
It bothered me so much that I rigged the unit so the fans would only run at half the speed. It was useless though as the machine got pretty hot. Maybe if it was in an a/c data center it would be different.

  • RADEON 9800 cooling fan

I have a RADEON 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256MB in my QuickSilver 2002 mounted in the AGP slot. The 9800 cooling fan is very loud (grinding sound) after a cold startup then gets quiet after it warms up. I have looked at third party cooling fans for this RADEON and I have found the Zalman v700cu and the Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2 that seem to be compatible. From the images of these two coolers it looks like the two mounting screws that project out the back of the garphic card are very close to the lower memory slot in my QuickSilver. I don't use the PCI slot next to the AGP slot so I know the coolers will be OK there.
My question is, has anyone actually tried one of these coolers in a QuickSilver 2002 and is there enough clearance between the mounting posts on the cooler and the memory card to prevent them from touching?

ATI fans are notoriously bad (read that as cheap). You will know the fan is going bad when you hear a loud whine or grinding noise after a cold startup or during heavy use. The fan went bad on my 9800 Pro 256 after just 5 months. I had to send the card to ATI for repair - nearly 3 weeks to get the card back. The replacement ATI fan started making noise after another 90 days. I can't see doing this on a regular schedule for the three year warranty term so I replaced the stock fan with an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2. It's easy to install. So quiet that I can't hear it run and my computer case and power supply fans run slower and with less noise than ever before due to the Arctic fan venting warm air out of the computer.
The Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, Rev. 2 installed perfectly with no modifications and minimal effort. It has a 6 year warranty. I consider this modification the best thing you can do to protect the $250 (or whatever you pay) investment you make with the RADEON card. It's better than waiting for the stock fan to fail and cause your 9800 to melt down. Technically installing the Arctic fan voids the ATI warranty but I believe I could reinstall the old stock fan if the card needs other warranty repairs without anyone noticing the switch was ever made.
So your answers are yes and yes although I never had the monitor problem you describe. The ATI card is a good choice - keep it then download and install the latest drivers from the ATI/AMD web site and do yourself a favor and buy an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer model for your card. Install it when you start to hear the stock fan going bad. You will be glad you did.
PS - many thanks to FangSuede for his excellent advice given to me.
