Cooling fan is making irritating noise

my cooling fan has resently been making alot of noise
i tried cleaning dust of it but then it wouldnt stop
i then found the fan was kinda loose and when pushed on the outside and moved, it would make the same noise rubbing against the bottom of the heatsink
is there a way to fix this

Well, since you didn't really give the actual model, I can only speculate that it's the wire interfering with the fan. The Ti XXXX 8x retail series have a TopTech Cooler and the housing that holds the fan has a metal clip that's supposed to keep the wire from touching the blades. It doesn't work that well and sometimes you have to fiddle with the wire to get it to clear the blades. It will often happen after handling or cleaning the assemby.

My fan is making a noise - any ideas?

Does it sound as though it is just running faster than usual? You may be able to resolve that easily enough by restarting your MacBook Air.
If it persists then an SMC reset is indicated:
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Sounds of mechanical interference or impending failure should only be fixed by Apple or an authorized service shop.

  • MacPro making irritating noise!!

I got my used Mac Pro through the mail and when it arrived, there was a fracture in the lower body of the computer. It doesn't necessarily impede on the performance on the computer, however, during certain tasks it sounds like the disk drive is making an irritating noise. Unfortunately, a short term remedy is to give the top of the computer a simple whack! But clearly, I would love to fix the issue so I don't have to abuse the computer.
Is there a procedure I can perform to fix this issue rather than sending it in for repair?? Could it potentially be just a connection inside that needs to be checked out??
    Thanks!

  • My Mac Pro Lion 10.7.4 is getting hot, and the fan is making some noise.

Since I've got this Macbook Pro Lion 10.7.4 (October, 2011) the temperature of the backside is very hot, and today (July, 2012) the fan is making some weird noise. Does anyone know what is going on?

  • X300 - fan/hdd making weird noise

FYI notebook is <= 6 months old.
Couple of days ago, I had my x300 on for few days without any downtime, did system upgrade (kernel changes included [debian lenny]) in the meantime. Then out of nowhere, this very loud weird breaks out, few years ago I heard pretty much the same noise, I didn't shut down my notebook, and result was ... my hdd died.
So I shut down my x300, let it "relax" for few hours. Few hours later, noise is much softer and quiter, since I thought it could even be made to changes to kernel, I tried with few other distros, but nothing really changed it. Now I first thought it was my fan that was making this weird noise, but now I'm almost 100% positive it's my hdd. Since x300 would remain completely silent until I saw it booted my root partition and hdd started working, then I would hear the noise as well.
I keep shutting it down now, if it's not shut down it's on suspend or hibernate, I'm really scared to leave it up all night. I tried going through this forum, Google of course and etc ... but nothing really solved my problem. Right now noise is completely ... you can barely hear it, but let's say I have bat ears so I can hear it all the time.
It goes away, but then few minutes after computer has been on it comes back, since I gave it its time to "rest" it's been quite quiet, the reason I don't send it to Lenovo support is because of my recent incident: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=X_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=6612
and I pretty much just got it from them, so if I really don't want to go through whole thing agian.
Any thoughts, ideas, please do let me know.

I recommend you try to remove the battery and boot it if the noise is still there or not.
SDD might not have any noise from my experiences.
You're so hard to vertiy where the noise comes from , because the material of x300 is so easily passing the sound everywhere.
Most common problems are came from the fan, the cpu (can not be solven), the battery(common issue)
BTW, the x300 is supposed to be loud....i own one, I have the same problem, just use tpfancontrol and kick the noise out

  • Fan is making grinding noises, had it checked out, but it's still as noisy as ever?

So my Macbook Pro (from late 2011) has been making very loud grinding noises coming from the left fan for about a month now. Sometimes it's more subtle, but usually it's very loud even when applications aren't even open. As soon as I start up my laptop, without fail, the grinding begins. It's at its worst when I'm watching Netflix, but it's always loud regardless to the point where it's hard to hear the audio from videos.
I finally took my laptop to the Genius Bar today and had a guy look at it. He said that the left fan was blocked and he cleaned it out for me. He handed me back my laptop and said the test he ran said it was good. So I thought, great! I didn't have to pay for a new fan!
Well I just got home, turned on my laptop, and the grinding is as noisy as ever. It's like nothing had been done at all. I really wish I had tested turning on my laptop in the store before I left, but I was so happy that it was just dust buildup that I left thinking everything would be fine
Do you guys think this is a sign that the fan has to be replaced? I'll probably end up going back to the store this week, but I'm hoping maybe there's something I can do (if at all possible--i'm not that good with hardware though) because replacing the fan will probably be expensive for me.

  • Cooling fan makes noise n laptop freezes

    hi,
     i got a satellite -215 S4747
after i start my cooling fan starts making some noise as if its struggling to rotate, n within few minutes laptop freezez,,
i got it checked der was no dust or anything found on the fan..
    pls help.

Is your model A215-S4747?  Support site here
If there is no dirt clogging the heat sink fins, and none in the fan blades, then it may be the fan itself is/has failed.  replace fan or attempt to relube existing fan.  search the internet on how to restore a fan by relubing.  I think replace would be better, and what you may ultimately have to do anyway.

  • Vaio E series - Cooling Fan noise

Hello, 2 weeks ago I bought Vaio E series.  I was very excited that I will have Vaio laptop. It was like my dream wish. According to our standard, we are poor country and the Vaio laptops are extremely expensive. But, Vaio laptops are know for high quallity laptops and great support from Sony. So, I bought it. I am very satisfied with the quality. But I have one problem. The cooling fan is making a lot of noise even the CPU usage its 10 %. I have the latest BIOS version. So, Sony I am expecting from you to release a new BIOS update fixing this issue.. I dont want to start thinking that I pay a lot of money only for the name. With that money I could buy a more powerful machine but I put my trust in Sony. The model number is Model # SVE17122CXB. PS. Don't say that I should go to service center because they can do nothing. I am an IT student and I know how this stuff works. And I dont  want the fact that the new laptop will be repaired. So the only solution is BIOS update. Sony, do not make me regret that I have chosen you before other brands.
I am expecting a positive feedback.

    t0n1,
Engineering came back saying that fan speed control is not supported on the SVE17 hardware so there is no way on this model to control the fan speed manually.  I apologize for suggesting this initially, at the time I did not have your exact model at my desk but instead I had a very similar one (SVE14A)
I also received two SVE17 notebooks and both have extremely quiet fan (especially if CPU usage is very low).  Loud fan noise is not a characteristic of this model.
If you feel that the fan on your SVE17 is abnormally loud, then you have two options at this point:
    1) You can make a audio/video recording of this fan noise and post it for me to review; after that i can try to give you more suggestions or let you know if this is in fact normal or not.  At this time you do not mention that your computer is shutting off, so the unit is not overheating.
    2) Or you can consider service.  (I realize you initially refused service in your original post, but sometimes some new thermal sheets or re-seating of the heat-sink can address these issues.

  • Cooling Fan Noise Through USB And Recording Software

Anyone know how to keep the cooling fan from making a pop in recording software and through the USB port while hooked to an interface and pa system. The pop comes when the fan turns on or off.
    Thanks for any help

Fixed my own problem... if anyone else has this issue and sees this all I had to do was update to ML 10.8.3 and it took care of what ever bug was in the system.

  • Ibook keeps making weird noises on the left side near the fan vent

Recently my ibook has been making motor noises as it heats up. Sometimes I can make it go away by lifting the front or back up a lottle bit. Last time I got the noise it wouold not stop at all! I tried shutting down and letting it cool way off.....after 2 hours I started again and the noise was there immediately and would not stop. Please help!!

    Hi 744mom,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
There are 2 things in that area with motors; the fan and the hard drive. With the noise present at a cold start I would think the hard drive might be going bad.
Launch Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and highlight the drive on the left (upper most in the list). At the bottom of the window you'll see SMART status. Does it say Verified or Failing?

  • Macbook Pro 15" right fan making strange noise

I have a mid 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, 2.3 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM running 10.9.4.  About 3 days ago it fell on to tile floor from about 10 inches off the ground and hit the floor at a 45 degree angle.  There was no damage except for a small scratch near and under the charging port.  Everything was working perfectly until a day ago when I noticed the right fan was making a strange high pitched humming noise.  It's very quiet, I can only hear it when there's no other noise but it is extremely irritating when I can hear it.  Other than the noise the fan works fine, it speeds up when when the computer gets hot, and in Temperature Monitor nothing gets hotter than it should be.  The computer works completely fine, but I'm wondering what could be making the noise.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Equium P200-1ED - Fan making considerable noise

I have had laptop approx 17 months with no issues but last week noticed what I think was the fan making considerable noise - as if the bearings have gone or the fan has been damaged and is now clipping something? A bit like a car - I know the noise was not therebefore and this worries me.
This noise is intermittent, more often at start-up and far less frequent when laptop is in power saving mode (which makes me confident it is the fan??).
Is this a common fault? Should I be too concerned -i .e. can ignoring it lead to something more serious? And how do I resolve?
The fan appears completely unobstructed and the vents are clear as far as I can tell but I have not taken the laptop apart. If it is the bearings, one would suspect this is a known problem??
    Thanks,
    Mathew

    Hello
I think its not easy so say what the reason is for this but in my opinion something is blocking the fan.
In your case I would try to clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. You can buy it from a local computer store and its easy to use because therefore you must not disassemble the notebook.
    Its worth a try! ;)
I doubt that this is a common fault. In the forum I cant find may threads about this.

  • Fan issue making noise and heating issue

    Hi,
My laptop fan is making noise like a car engine.Earliar i did nott realize it but since winters are here i can hear it clearly coz ciealing fan is not under use now. Also my laptop is quite heated below.I have read that dust can accumulate in vents but i cant see any. Also my previous laptop got killed becoz of this same issue.Hp should do something about it.Can a layman like me open the dv-4 version and clean the fan? It is out of warranty now and i dont want to spend on shop. But i saw a video HP laptops are complicated to open....and close.Watevr other advice u r most welcome to give regarding yhis issue.
    thanks

HP notebooks tend to run hot & thermal control is minimal effort in design & materials.
You can try clening with compressed air or a hoover perhaps but if looks clean & air sems to be flowing I expect it not the main issue.
You may also want to check running processes & CPU use as issues here & viruses can causes CPU load thus heat.
Also review notebook placed so vents are not blocked/restricted.
Use software such as HWinfo to review the actual temps of CPU GPU etc as helps see how much of an issue you really have.
HP laptops can be improved with thermal shims, ceramique paste, housing vent modifications & in extreme cases secondary case venting 25>30mm fan.
Not easy to do without some experience.
